Kiss Him, Not Me, Vol. 14

Rate this book
This comedy is a wacky and dramatic rallying cry for fans of yaoi and addictive shojo! Now a hit anime!

Ages 16 and up.

Kae here for one last huzzah! I went all the way to Shiga to tell Mutsumi-senpai he's the only one for me! There, we ended up spending the night together in a hotel, and ... !!! Well, let's just say things would have gone a little differently if it was one of my BL ships!

And remember how Mutsumi-senpai is graduating this year? He suggested that we spend time making as many memories as we can, but also says his dream college is all the way in Kyoto...

Aaahh, what do I do?! I don't want him to give up on his dream! Will we find our happy ending, or is that the sort of thing that only happens in doujinshi?

Such a satisfying finale! I have been a fan of Mutsumi Senpai from the very first volume and I loved to see his continued growth. Throughout this volume I had so many feels! Three different times I literally squealed "senpai!" Thats when I know I am invested in a manga and it's characters. It's sad to see it all come to an end but I loved the hopeful glimpses into the happy couple's future and the entire cast of characters and their future endeavors. I loved the emotions and it's somewhat unrealistic sappiness.

Though it was sappy at times, it was still extremely heartwarming.

Behold!!!!! The final volume of Kiss Him, Not Me!!!!!

It was... *big inhale* GOOOODDD!!!!!!!!

(This is a review of Volume 14 only. To read my Series Review please click here )

The first third of this volume was funny as always, which was great, and then the remaining two thirds were actually pretty serious. Well… Maybe not super serious, but it definitely wasn't funny anymore. I guess by “serious” I mean it became more like a shoujo manga than a comedy manga. That said, I didn't mind because it was cute and still entertaining, god damn it!!!!

This whole volume—even when it still had the Lols—was pretty progressive and “in wit’ it,” if you fellow kids catch my drift. It was low-key feminist in how sex-positive it was! This whole volume was essentially Kae and on a quest—nay, an epic journeyto fuck. I feel like I've seen this before, and the whole “oh no they keep getting interrupted right before he sticks it in” thing might not be all that original, but… Meh. It worked well enough. It's actually a pretty funny concept if you think about it, so I was down.

Nonetheless, that was probably where this volume lost its points: Its originality (or lack-there-of) factor. Nothing that happened was really all that… New. It's just lucky that this was a final volume, and that it ended up still being entertaining simply because it had these characters that I've been following for 14 volumes. Once the two lovebirds were finally able to make their way into Poundtown™, the ending was also super cheesy and unoriginal, though I can't say that it wasn't mostly satisfying. The cliches are overused for a reason, people: they work!

Honestly, this is a super silly series so you really can't expect a serious, epic, or intense ending. I know I can't think of a better way to finish off this series, so really, in the end, the route Junko went might have been just perfect. Exactly what we needed to cap off this series.

Please consider giving this review a "Like" if you've made it this far, it helps me out a lot! And follow me if you want more!

I’m getting the last volume feeels so hard right now 😭😭 Reminds me of the beautiful marriage scene in Maid Sama, which I cried whilst reading it.

Ah, is this kind of true love real? It’s definitely really heartwarming when reading about it.

Personal musings that I had been thinking of whilst reading this last volume:

I could hardly recognise Asuma when he cut his hair- he looked so cute! 😍

That ending photo of the gang made me want to cry it was so beautiful ❤️❤️

Their kid is super cute.

I ship Nana and Shino 😜

And I’m really happy about the ending, but I still feel this twinge in my heart that it has come to an end. Ah, every time I think that I feel a pinch in my chest because of how precious it was to me reading each volume.

Thank you Junko-san and I look forward to reading more of your work in the future!

Oh, man, it's finally over!!! Everything gets wrapped up super quickly in this volume. It's...sort of satisfying? I guess? Maybe?

Loved the first few volumes of this series, but it went on waaaaay too long and mostly consists of filler. It's definitely not something I'll ever go back to and reread. I'll just keep the ridiculousness of the original idea in my head and laugh at that from time to time instead.

So cute!

I loved the ending. Kae and her senpai were perfect for each other, after all he didn’t care if she was fat or skinny. I loved how she got fat for her wedding and her senpai looked so happy. Ahhh this manga brings all the feels. Kae is the perfect female lead, and she’s an incredible person no matter what her weight is. There needs to be more acceptance of girls despite their body sizes! Recommended manga for sure. Now onto the anime!

A worthy end to the series! I really liked that this volume addresses sex, and does so in a way that's actually fairly healthy. I don't have high expectations for manga with that issue, but I liked how this went down a lot. Also, we see the future as a big topic, and the story really forces Kae to do some more growing up, which was nice. And I will admit, I kind of loved the flashforward at the very end. I'm not usually a big fan of that trope, but I thought it was fun here, and it made me happy.

In terms of the series overall, I would definitely call it one of my favorite manga series of recent years. I loved Kae's madcap fangirl energy, and that she drags all of these love interests along with her for the ride. The adventures they have, while ridiculous, are often heartfelt and sweet, and it was a series that consistently made me feel good. (For the record, the anime is also quite fun, though it doesn't cover the entire series.)

I would be remiss in failing to mention that there are certainly some problematic aspects to the series. The way that Kae's weight is handled is often not good. There's a lot to be said about the way that she only really becomes of interest to most of the boys when she loses a ton of weight, and the unhealthy way that she seesaws between weights is disturbing. It's also very telling that although the manga acknowledges that Kae often gains weight when she is a happy and loses it when she's depressed, she almost entirely remains thin through the course of the series. There are some okay messages also, but I'd say it's pretty dominated by the unhealthy. If weight issues are a trigger for you, I wouldn't recommend this series.

Queerbaiting is another issue. If you're looking for queer rep, it's not really here. Yes, one of Kae's love interests is a girl, but it's never really taken seriously as an option, and definitely sees far less screen time than her relationships with the boys. There are some fan service scenes with the boys, but that's very much all that they are. There is an implication that two of the boys may eventually end up in a relationship, but that's also just an implication that's never really confirmed. So, reader beware on that.

I read this series at my sister’s recommendation while recovering at her house from a surgery. It was perfect in that I genuinely had no idea who the protagonist would end up with, which is rare for me! I was pleasantly surprised that my favorite guy from the start won her love, and the happy ending was all that I could have wanted while recovering from something painful. Perfect!

Yes, it's another shoujo with a perfect end and quick jump into the future, but I really loved this series as a whole. It was funny, sweet, and it has a possible fun twist at the end!

That angel deserves only to smile from the bottom of his heart!!".

What a journey this series has been. Wow. Uh final thoughts I guess?

Obviously this is easily the best in the series. I just loved seeing these two be so happy together! It made me happy!

I’ve been a Mutsumi Stan since the beginning (so much so I literally wasn’t going to read the rest unless she ended up with him). It was sweet in these last few volumes to watch their love story unfold. Mutsumi was always the one person that’s accepted and loved her for who she was. Not only that but what lengths he went through to show her that even when he didn’t even know his feelings were sweet. This boy literally paid his respects to a fictional character who died! Mutsumi is the reasons I have high expectations for a boyfriend.

Along with that it was so sweet seeing his feelings being reciprocated. I loved watching Kae realizing she loved him. Kae is definitely relatable as we’re both fangirls who watch the characters get together and while she had all these guys pursuing her, she still was a bit on the sidelines and shipping them together. So watching Kae turn from wanting other people together to wanting to be with someone was so fun to watch.

These two have always suited each other so well from the beginning and it was clear she was always the most comfortable and happy around Mutsumi. Also Mutsumi is like an angel. This volume especially was pure happiness with drama but like realistic and not too over the top. They genuinely love each other and it’s so evident. Actually seeing them in a relationship was a highlight of the series because I have definitely expressed why I didn’t like the others (not going to talk about that here though as I have already in other reviews.) and like I said I’ve been rooting for these two to get together since the beginning.

Are they one of my new favourite ships? Yes (if the five star didn’t tell you that already.)

Overall, this is all I really wanted for a finale. It made me happy and these two lived happily ever after. If I chose to re-read anything from this series it would probably just be these last few because they made me the happiest.

14 tomos: 4/5

Wow, what a journey this manga series was! I really loved these characters, and how funny and ridiculous each and every one of them were. I'm also really happy that this had such a happy ending.

But this volume gave me really mixed feelings. I can't help but feel like it wasn't needed? I think I would've preferred it if we didn't get a slightly overdramatic sequence of Mutsumi going off to college and Kae flipping out, and the entire epilogue wasn't my favorite. I've never been a fan of flash-forwards to X amount of years later, I just don't really care about that type of thing.

My favorite part of this whole series was seeing the six of them goof off and fight over who should get to be with Kae. They're such a well established friend group, and I think that's where the author's talents are, not so much in the actual relationship department. In fact I was a little bored with the chapters after Kae and Mutsumi got together, which is never a good thing.

Overall this series was still a really fun read, I one hundred percent recommend it to all fans of shoujo romance!

started this series back in middle school, and ended it in early high school.

i guess this was one of those romance mangas that depicts harem but not actually harem in the tags? and has an unexpected choice for the male love interest in the end.

i had lots of issues now that I think back to how I thought of this manga. The premise of the story was unsettling because it actually made me imagine stupid things like the overnight 'diet' and how to turn skinny overnight, all that stuff. Also, now, I think the heroine of the story is so flippant and didn't really have a strong development to her character at all throughout the story. it was unpleasant, to say the least.

i liked how the main couple ended though, it did give me closure because THE MALE LOVE INTEREST WAS ACTUALLY GOOD. the other guys ... kinda not it. sure they played many 'romantic' tropes and it did me when I was reading it a while back, but now that I look back, man some of them aren't it at all.

This ending felt a little bit rushed but it was enjoyable!

I feel like Kae was a little selfish at times in this one but everything seems to work out in the end. Her and Mutsumi end up staying together and eventually have sex which is something I wasn’t really expecting. Fast forward a couple year and everyone is all adults and out of university and they are attending Kae and Mutsumi’s wedding. It is a really cute ending and I am really happy Mutsumi won! They also end up having a kid together and name him Shion (how cute).

Once again I feel like this is a bit rushed at the end and I wish we could of seen more of the other love interests and what they were doing after university. The manga does tell us what their current occupations are but they don’t go that deep into them. It kinda felt like they were just thrown in there but that’s fine. Overall it’s a good ending and I am glad Kae actually ended up with someone in the end!

FINALLY. Six years since I first fell in love with the anime show, I finally devoured 80% of the manga in just under three days. Kae Serinuma is up there with Kyoko Mogami (from Skip Beat!) for being one of the funniest female shoujo protagonists of all time. The otaku/shipping nonsense is delightful, the over-the-top melodrama legitimately made me laugh out loud numerous times, and the sweet moments are simply adorable.

I've rewatched the anime so many times that after binge-watching it in one day yesterday, I decided "it is time" and returned to the manga that prior to that I only barely touched. And proceeded to fly through it so quickly, I'm astonished I didn't finish it back in 2020.

This will always be a forever favorite title, and though I "prefer" the anime, if only for the hilarious dubbing and hamming it up acting skills, the manga was genuinely a delight to visit all the way through to the end.

Unlike the other romantic comedy shoujo manga I've read in the past, this one managed not to disappoint me in the least with its ending! So many other series sort of fizzle out, especially in the comedy department, as they enter their final stages, and one or two I've read were downright disappointing because they just didn't live up to the standards they had followed until that point. So, SO happy that "Kiss Him, Not Me" stayed strong until the very end! The comedy was on point--I was laughing heartily (sometimes howling!) the whole way through--and the addition of some VERY steamy scenes was so well done, I don't think I've seen better in any manga, regardless of genre! Of course, the artwork was gorgeous as ever. Junko-sensei has created such a wonderful story here. I'm so glad I kept up with it through the years. If she ever makes another manga, you can bet I'll be buying it!

I can't believe that this is the last volume, I've enjoyed reading it so much. I have always been a fan of Mitsumi ever since the start as he's so carefree, kind, lovable and smart. I really wanted the two of them to get together and I'm happy that that wish came true. I loved the glimpse in the future where they all meet up for Mitsumi and Serinumas wedding. Just loved how Nana and Shio were still bickering like always after graduating high school, I ship them so much 😍.

Hearing that they named their first child Shion, so priceless and adorable!!!! 😁😁😂

I couldn't have wanted a more happier ending for all of the characters and it's an ending that would be with me for a long time, it's a brilliant read and I seriously recommend it. Now all I want is a second season!

I love that Mutsumi-senpai and Kae-chan had relatable problems in their relationship; even if Kae-chan overacted a bit. I’m so glad that everyone got their own version of a happy ending as well as meeting a new someone in the last few pages of the volume.
Additionally, I low key ship Shima-chan and Igarashi-kun together despite her possibly being queer. I also think it was eluded that Nanashima-kun and Shinomiya-kun got together, but that could be me overthinking things. I was a bit apprehensive to first read this series mainly due to how problematic Kae-chan weight is throughout the series, but overall this was an enjoyable series and I’m glad I finally read it.
Oh and also, I’m extremely happy that we didn’t see anymore of that psycho voice actor from Kae-chan’s childhood.
