Christina Rice is a writer, librarian, and archivist who was born and bred in the greater Los Angeles region. While majoring in film at Cal State Fullerton in the 1990s, she began collecting memorabilia relating to actress Ann Dvorak which eventually lead her to document Dvorak's life, launch www.anndvorak.com, and ultimately write Ann Dvorak: Hollywood's Forgotten Rebel (University Press of Kentucky, 2013). After obtaining an MLIS from San Jose State University in 2004, she began a career as a librarian with the Los Angeles Public Library the following year. Since 2009, she has overseen the library’s historic photo collection. In addition to authoring books on Ann Dvorak and Jane Russell, she has also written numerous issues of the My Little Pony comic book series (IDW Publishing) and was a contributor to the Eisen-nominated anthologies Femme Magnifique (Black Crown, 2018) and Where We Live (Image Comics, 2018). She lives in Los Angeles with her husband, writer Joshua Hale Fialkov, their daughter, and two adorable dogs.
As much as I love MLP, this wasn't the strongest volume of the series. It's a series of one-shots, but while the art is strong as always, the stories just aren't all that interesting. Tragically, even Princess Pinkie Pie, Ruler of Chaos, couldn't infuse enough fun in this one (particularly with such a subdued Discord)! It will probably still go over well with kids, but it definitely wasn't one of my favourites.
#54 - Once again my least favorite MLP artist delivers a repetitive story I’ve read a hundred times before. Fluttershy's animals need a petsitter and it turns into a catastrophe, yadda, yadda. There's nothing new here and Fosgitt’s art is just as awful to look at as ever.
#55/56 - This story actually has some depth to it, and it's a shame that the first half is just a simple Rainbow Dash-flavored lesson in bravery, considering the issues explored in the second half. Part 2 explores Spike's identity as a dragon raised by ponies, and shows how the microaggressions perpetrated by his friends affect him. If both stories had been focused around this much more interesting story, it could have easily added another star to my overall rating, because I really liked Part 2; it just feels flat when paired with the shallowness of Part 1.
#57 - I always love a Discord story, but this one feels out-of-character for everypony. A power-mad Pinkie Pie could be fun, but it plays out in an unbelievable way (even for a Discord story) and doesn't feel genuine. There's some cool worldbuilding surrounding Discord's powers/personal dimension and how they work, but it also breaks a lot of its own rules. The art and panel layouts also aren't pushed as far as I'm used to with Discord stories.
#58 - This story really feels like we're missing something. It's a little flat but also way too busy, with too many rapidly-introduced side characters and not much of a plot. Twilight feels out-of-character, and it just overall feels like only half of a story.
Overall not the best round of stories. One and two-issue stories can work well in the MLP universe, but these just don't.
Ponys einfach 🥰
Enjoyed the second and third stories about Yakyakistan and Pinkie Pie entering Discord's realm. The first and last stories were much weaker in my opinion, but still with great artwork.
Yaks and dragons fight, pinkie becoming a chaos goddess, and angel recruits the cutie mark crusaders to help take care of animals in the hospital. What’s not to love about that.
Another fantastic read! I love how they explore more of the history of Equestria and the surrounding areas. I even learned a thing or two about Pinkie Pie and Discord. ;)
