Identity: Who You Are in Christ

Rate this book
In Nazi concentration camps, the will of Jewish prisoners was broken by stripping away their personal identification and giving them just a number rather than a name. Satan operates the same way, always trying to undo the faith of believers by twisting the reality of who they are as followers of  Christ.

Identity by young pastor Eric Geiger (coauthor of the multi-awarded national bestseller Simple Church) helps Christians clearly understand who they really are as defined by various Scriptures and unpacks the practical response that goes along with each wonderfully dramatic, empowering, and liberating truth.

Readers will consider like never before the Bible’s descriptions of God followers as priests, brides, servants, friends, aliens, and ambassadors. Both challenged and encouraged, they will discover their deepest self and greatest purpose in Identity.

When I first picked up this book, I was a teacher who wanted to center his Bible class on our identity in Christ. Of course, doing the class required a book to serve as the reading material for the course. I came across this one and decided to read it over the summer to help prepare for the class the next year. Well, I found myself captivated by it.

What I love about this book is that not only does it keep the idea simple and easy to digest, it is spoken plainly with Scripture to back it up and personal experiences to supplement it. Also, I love the inclusion of humor within.

This was back in 2022-2023. The reason I am giving the review now is because I decided to revisit it recently. Unfortunately, due to circumstances involving poor administrative choices, I ended up leaving the school I had taught at. That said, I wanted to share that the Bible class, in spite of the toxic environment of the school, was a success. I got to see results before my eyes. I was able to bond with several students I used to have difficulties with. I still believe that if I had another year to teach the class, I could have seen the mindset of the student body steadily turn a full 180 with several students surrendering their hearts to Christ.

At any rate, the reason I wanted to revisit it is because I have not lost sight of my dream. One day, I will return to the teaching field, but my identity-centered Bible class will take precedent. I want to see more lives changed and on a broader scale through a ministry focused on connecting teenagers and young adults to their spiritual identity in Christ so that they will one day go out and become purpose-driven difference-makers.

Finally, I wanted to say that as I read it through once again, I could feel the same captivation that I had felt when I read it the first time. This is a powerful Spirit-inspired book. I hope that the devotional I am writing as part of my ministry would impact readers the same way this book on identity has impacted me.

Finally, someone who says what your identity IS.

So many talks on YouTube, in church, and other books take a trite and unulfilling direction: they tell you "you are not the contents of your wallet. You are not your khakis." Well, so does Fight Club. The only difference between the prevalent Christian message and Fight Club is that Fight Club says you are "the all singing, all dancing, crap of the world." But, the Christian message says "you're a child of God." But, if you have a real struggle where your identity as a businessman, or a husband, or a father, or a pilot, or a... Whatever... is taken from you, NONE of these platitudes actually help because they don't color in the details. They are like a movie preview, with no movie. Geiger's book, and the other hand, actual tells you what an identity in Christ Jesus actually looks like. He fills in the roles from which your identity in Christ is formed, gives each one texture, and helps you move from wherever you are towards what Christ meant for you to be. Highly recommended if you are trying to figure out, "ok. I'm a child of God. What does that actually mean? What does that look like?"

It’s so good I have to reread to savor it

I was going through some identity issues after my mom passed away in January. This book was a timely find and I did follow his suggestion to read one chapter a week to let it soak in. The last chapter tied in to my small group discussion that we had yesterday. Those little things make me know that God is with me and helping me grow in my faith walk. Now I am going to reread it again. It is so very good!

This is a nice book, and would be good news for people who are fairly new Christians. People who have been Christians for a while have probably heard most of it already. A good reminder never hurt anyone, and Geiger does have some good things to say, but he over-explains and restates almost everything so the book is simply too long.

I learned a few things but was a little disappointed. Was it that I was expecting something different or that this book did not hit its mark?
