About the author

Tamil language Novel Writer, Journalist, Poet & Critic late Ramaswamy Aiyer Krishnamurthy also known as ‘Kalki’. He derived his pen name from the suffixes of his wife name Kalyani and his name Krishnamurthy in Tamil form கல்யாணி and கிருஷ்ணமூர்த்தி as Kalki (கல்கி). His name also represents “Kalki avatar”, the tenth and last avatar of the Hindu God Vishnu.

His writings includes over 120 short stories, 10 novelettes, 5 novels, 3 historical romances, editorial and political writings and hundreds of film and music reviews. Krishnamurthy’s witty, incisive comments on politics, literature, music and other forms of art were looked forward to with unceasing interest by readers. He wrote under the pen names of ‘Kalki’, ‘Ra. Ki’, ‘Tamil Theni’, ‘Karnatakam’ and so on.

The success that Krishnamurthy attained in the realm of historical fiction is phenomenal. Sixty years ago, at a time when the literacy level was low and when the English-educated Tamils looked down on writings in Tamil, Kalki’s circulation touched 71,000 copies – the largest for any weekly in the county then – when it serialised his historical novels. Kalki had also the genius to classify the historical and non-historical events, historical and non-historical characters and how much the novel owes to history.

ஓவியங்கள் அருமையாக இருந்தன. கந்தமாறனின் உருவம் மட்டும் ஆண்டி போல இருந்தது.

பொன்னியின் செல்வன் முதல் பாகம் முழுவதையும் காமிக்ஸாக போட்டிருந்தால், ஆயிரம் பக்கத்துக்கு மிகாமல் இருந்திருக்கும். கதையின் உயிரோட்டத்தை மட்டுமே எடுத்து சுருங்கச் சொல்லி இருக்கிறார்கள்.

அரை நாழிகை என்பது 30 நொடிகள் என்று தவறாக விளக்கவுரை கொடுத்திருக்கின்றனர். உண்மையில் அரை நாழிகை என்பது 12 நிமிடங்களுக்கு சமம்.

A great thought to do an animation series + film on ponniyin selvan, with amount of characters and situation involved the best thing possible with ponniyin selvan to be represented in visual medium is through comics and animation. For taking up this venture big appreciation to nila comics and people involved.

Now coming to the review, the comics is short and brings in only the important conversation obviously understandable. But the authors have made sure that they bring in all the essesntials in the right mix. People who does not know about aadi 18 and could not imagine tamilian tradition would feel good to see the images. Charecters are more western like for eg. vandhiyathevan resembles more like aladdin, I dont know being that way is easy for them to do animation if not being the case things could be more indian. That is kind of let down.

But on contrary azhvarkadian nambi, people and saints with whom he fights are more indian than western influence. Hope future strong characters of book like nandhini, kundhavai, arulmozhi and adhithyakarikalan are like azhvarkadiyan and not vandhiyathevan. A very good start expectation increases.

Was a wonderful read
Do not know how much I lost in the condensation of the epic into the graphic form, bur surely did enjoy the graphics
Will now move on to book 2.

My review is not for the story but the comic book format and the simplification of the story in this format. This is probably okay for children to read, but I totally missed the characterisations & depth in this format.

Brave new attempt in the Comics space.
Artwork is very eye catching and the narration is more or less smooth.
While it may not be word for word faithful to the original story by Kalki, and certain colloquial expressions (like "bro") find their way into this version, this book is a great way to introduce a classic tale to a new generation and wider readership.

What appears to be read again in readers of the paintings that may be in this book. And this plot also keeps us reading again and again.
Most importantly I think that any plot is run from someone's point of view but this story is from the point of view of our protagonist Vandya Devan.

Too short. This covers just the introduction where Santhiya thevan gets to sort the religious schism between Alwarkadiyaan and Saiva pattar. That is just the opening of first novel.
