She can't have the man she loves...if it means losing her child!
Docker's a widow trying to adopt the child she and her husband had taken in. Except her new rental home turns out to be a disaster reno...and she, now single, has to prove she can give the boy everything he needs. That includes a roof over his head, four walls and running water! If not for the absentee landlady's cranky recluse of a brother, she wouldn't have been able to cope. But now Alexi has to choose between a man she's growing to love and the boy she needs to adopt...because Seth Greene has a past that could ruin the adoption process.

I received an early copy from the author. This book will be released this coming Thursday and I totally recommend it. It is a heartwarming, sweet romance about family and healing set in a locale dear to my heart.
At one point in the novel… I won't release any spoilers… I thought I was going to have to call up the author and have a little chat about what she did to the hero. But she knew what she was doing, and she created a happily ever after out of an impossible situation that kept me up reading late into the night.
Full of laughter and tears this romance won't disappoint readers of the genre. Great characters and a great pace that fits the story.
*As a special bonus arranged between me and the author, I will be giving away my personal paperback copy which is full of my reader notes--it will go to one lucky sweet romance fan in my Facebook group. :)
I'd give this one nine stars if I could. I read it in one sitting! Stelmack tore at my heart with this touching story of a young widow with a handful of adopted kids and her difficult journey to adopt one more; even if it meant walking away from the man she loved, the man who made her heart and her family, complete. I laughed, I cried, I sympathized and I got angry. A Roof Over Their Heads travelled from tattered disaster to a beautiful place of love, happiness and family, taking me along for the ride. Well written. Believable characters and a story that will move you.
Seth has been cleaning up after his sister for a long time now, so when she rents out a broken down house to a widow, Alexi, and her kids, Seth grudgingly takes on the role of carpenter to help get the place in shape to earn a social worker’s approval for Alexi to officially adopt her oldest son.
This is set in Canada, which you do see from time to time in romances, but so often the Canadian settings aren’t all that distinguished from small-town American settings, so I really liked that this one actually felt Canadian with references to Tim Horton’s, Canadian tire, etc., and the social worker sports a hockey jersey (Merline’s one of many unique secondary characters here).
I thought Alexi and Seth had solid chemistry right from the start, and the high stakes of whether or not this boy will have a forever home makes for a good, plausible reason for this couple to fight their feelings, as did Alexi’s attachment to the husband she lost, this isn’t one of those situations where a simple conversation will solve the conflict and I appreciate that.
So I did like the romance, but for me, the family aspect of this story was the real highlight. I know some people aren’t fans of kids in romance, but I rarely have a problem with it especially when they’re well-written with their own distinct personalities as they are here and when they aren’t pushed into the background, they’re very much a part of the story both in heartwarming and difficult ways as they realistically would be if a single parent re-entered the dating world.
I also really liked the family dynamic between Seth, his older brother, Mel, and his younger sister, Connie, and the weight their father’s death leveled on each of them. I enjoyed Mel’s devotion to snack foods and how he’s constantly nudging Seth forward in life. Connie will probably rub you the wrong way to begin with, but the author gives you subtle hints that maybe she isn't as tough or mean as she wants everyone to believe, the moment with the bracelets in particular had me liking her and interested in her story even if she is kind of a villain at times, I think she’s going to make a great unconventional heroine for her own book.
If you like a story that’s well-populated, where the couple aren’t the only characters with dimension and heart, then definitely give this a try.
With her debut Harlequin Heartwarming novel, M.K. Stelmack serves up an emotional punch that settles her into this line-up of lovely authors right off the bat! The heroine grabs our attention quickly with the hard life she's having to juggle and despite the sadness she feels, she proves she's rich at heart with the warmth of her family. The plot is rife with turmoil, yet extremely kind-hearted and easy to sink your teeth into. I found myself pulling for the family, and in particular hoping she and Seth would be able to work out that happily-ever-after they all deserved. Looking forward to more from this fresh voice!
Alexi Docker is trying to hold her life together after losing the husband that meant the world to her. She's got four kids to be strong for, and she'd do anything for every single one of them ... but especially the one that she and her husband were still in the process of adopting. She has to have a stable home and prove she's the best fit for him ... but the new house they moved all this way to live in is not what she was promised!
Seth Greene didn't think he could be shocked by anything his sister would do at this point, but this one takes the cake. She's gutted her house and then rented it out to a family and walked away. He's been picking up the slack for her for years now, and he's just simply done. No more Mr. Nice Guy! It all sounds good when he says it, but when faced with a struggling single mom who's going to lose her kid if he doesn't remodel the house, Seth caves and does everything he can to help her even if it means his sister is benefitting.
Alexi and her husband, Richard, are happily raising four children, three adopted, one in the process of being adopted . . . all with special needs, some physical, some emotional . . . when Richard is suddenly taken from them. Alexi struggles to keep the family together. She moves the family into a disaster of a house that has been gutted for renovation, but never renovated. No running water is just the beginning of the problems with the house. This house is not what she saw in the pictures that were sent to her. Connie, her manipulative, self-serving landlady is no help. Connie’s brother, Seth, is her grumpy knight in shining armor. He steps in to help, though not cheerfully. He can’t believe his sister has rented this wreck to a widow with four children.
This story captured my heart from the first chapter. I laughed. I cried. I was totally invested in this story.
M. K. Stelmack has hit a home run with her debut novel. I just ordered her next book in this series and can’t wait to read it. I highly recommend A Roof Over Their Heads to anyone who loves a good, clean novel. I would give this book more than 5 Stars if I could.
This Heartwarming book " A Roof Over Their Heads" by M.K. Stelmack was a very good good. Alexi Docker, a widow has three adopted special needs children. She is trying to adopt a older boy. She moves to a new town because the boy keeps running away. They move to the home town where this boy grew up but he doesn't have any family left there. Alexi didn't know he grew up there all of five of his 12 years. The house is run down they move into. The caseworker was not happy about that. The boy likes Seth Greene who is helping to fix up the play. The other kids end up liking him also. Romance happens but it's rocky to say the least. I really liked this book.
Matt just knows moving from Calgary to Spirit Lake would be the best thing for his family. Matt is only eleven but he just knows when he meets Seth Greene that he will make a great Dad, now just to convince his mom! Alexi has 3 adopted children and hopes to make Matt number 4 just like her late husband and her planned. Moving, getting her kids settled in a decent house is all she asks so of course everything goes wrong. This is was such a great book I did not want it to end. I loved meeting everyone (even Connie) and getting to know them. This book is a must read!
This is the first book that I have read by M.K. Stelmack but it won’t be my last. The heroine of the book was a very strong person who keeps on going regardless of the situations she had to deal with. I hope the author plans to write a few more books on a few of the other characters in this book. It would be interesting to hear everyone’s full story.
