Nocturnal Meetings of the Misplaced
Mystery surrounds the town of Summertime, Indiana, where fifteen-year-old Tommy Walker and his little sister are sent to live with relatives they’ve never met. Tommy soon makes friends with Finn Wilds, a rebellious local who lives with his volatile and abusive stepfather, who also happens to be the town’s sheriff.
Finn invites Tommy to late night meetings in the woods, where Tommy gets to know two girls. He forms a special and unique connection with both girls. I was first drawn to this book by the awesome cover! Skulls are just so alluring! When I started this book, I wasn't sure what to expect, but I got a whole lot of awesome.
My favorite kinds of books are character driven, and this book had it! It's also told in first person and dual POV from two boys, which was very cool because I never see that! Tommy and Finn felt incredibly real. They acted like teen boys, made mistakes like teen boys, and grew their characters grew throughout the story.
What also had me turning the pages was the mystery of it—the dialogue and writing were on point! And yes, there are some twists and turns that were utterly great! Overall, a unique story that I wish there were more of out in the world!

T/W- Domestic Violence

I was part of the promotional blog tour for this book!
This was definitely a storyline that I found to be full of suspense. Scary, creepy with those scenes in particular a good read for around Halloween time. Told from two teen male POVs (which I found really refreshing), Tommy and his sister are sent to live with an Aunt and Grandparents who are completely new to them. This is after social services take them away from living with their Mum. In this new location, Tommy meets one of the local troublemakers called Finn, sadly for him, Finn lives with a Stepfather who doesn't give him any form of acceptance and also works as the sheriff. Joining with more local teens, Tommy feels he has found new friends for the first time in a while. But, the struggles of adolescence as well as a case of kidnapping and an unsolved murder, turn their lives (and friendships) completely upside down.
This standalone novel was full of twists and turns, with interesting perspectives from the teens featured throughout the story. I liked the setting of a small town in Indiana and the chilly plotline of the unsolved murder. Personally, the two teen male POVs of Tommy and Finn were written really well, each chapter represents one of their perspectives. Dialogue kept the pacing fast and flowing well throughout. This is a story that I can definitely see readers over 15+ enjoying. I did read this in one sitting which I felt added to the intrigue and excitement.
EXTRA- Some of the scenes of violence, I found to be a little graphic and uncomfortable to read. Wasn't the biggest fan of the romance either, much preferred the mystery! :)

I must admit that I went into this book a little blind and based solely off the title. I didn't read the synopsis and I was pleasantly surprised with how this turned out in the end. Tommy and his sister are "orphaned" to their Aunt's house as their mother goes through rehab. As they adjust to a new school and a new group of friends the reader gets a taste of the odd happenings and history of Summertime. Missing girls, mysterious deaths, sinister cops and kidnappings are just a few checks on the list of intrigue for this novel.
The beginning of the novel was slow for me and ebbs into the sibling's acclimation into Summertime. We meet Finn, who is the second POV in the novel and has his own dark family situation. The reader also gets to know Annie and Silence and their individual parts to the plot that they play. It took me a moment to adjust to the narration. The inflection of words and cadence of the reading was choppy at times. By the middle I grew accustomed to Irvine's narration style and was able to connect more with the story and characters.
There is a lot of middlegrade and highschool vibes to this read. The social structures, fitting in, and crushes between protagonists are very prevalent and the beginning of the book is mostly surrounding these aspects. However, these themes are also tied into dealing with hard situations like family alcoholism, death, sexual abuse, physical abuse, verbal abuse, being a kidnap victim and racism. I can see why the author chose to include the chapters dedicated to this plot growth. Once the pieces fall into place the intrigue picks up and I found myself captivated and shocked at the spin. Truly did not see that ending coming the way that it did.
Overall, this was enjoyable and I finished this in less than a day. If you like young sleuths who unravel shocking mysteries than I recommend this one. Take note of the mentioned situations above for trigger warnings.

Edgy read with lots of twists and turn and characters you can't stop thinking about. You're instantly drawn in to heart wrenching tragedy, dark secrets and hope surrounding rural Indiana and the darkness hiding within the small town of Summertime.

Fun exciting mystery story! First thing i have to say i LOVE all the pop culture references in this book! Tommy and his little sister are sent to live with their uncle in the small town of Summetime. Tommy finds out pretty quick that something weird is going on in Summertime. He just didnt know how weird. Now i havent watched Stranger Things (yea i know im probably one of the few people you havent) but from what little i know about the series i got that kind of vibe for Nocturnal Meetings of the Misplaced. The characters are very well written and complex. I gotta say that i just love Tommy's chararcter. He is very loyal to his friends and a great bigger brother.

If V.C. Andrews and Stephen King had a baby…it would be this book! And I mean that only in the very best way! This YA novel is a thrill ride of suspense and mystery from the get-go. Twists and turns abound within layers of intrigue and trepidation. I found myself unable, unwilling, to put this book down. It set my heart to racing with the urgency of the story and the characters. The remarkably well written and developed characters drew me in quickly and made me care. There was such a sense of realism from beginning to end. I fell in love with these characters and want so badly to hang out with them again! Don’t miss out on this first book by R.J. Garcia. I have a feeling we’ll be seeing much greatness from her!

NOCTURNAL MEETINGS OF THE MISPLACED is one of those novels I won't forget--memorable story with memorable characters. I don't see much YA mystery out there, and I think the world needs more of these kind of novels. This book is a standout in the YA contemporary genre in general. I read it very slowly, savoring every word--speed reading isn't allowed here because you may miss important information. The writing reminded me of "Anatomy of a Misfit" by Andrea Porters, another excellent novel.
One thing I really-really liked about NOCTURNAL MEETINGS OF THE MISPLACED is how engaging it is--fast paced, but not confusing. Also, the characters felt very real, to the point I was shouting at them, "Don't do that!" or "Move faster!"
In summary, I loved NOCTURNAL MEETINGS OF THE MISPLACED. Read it! You won't be disappointed!

“I began to wait for Saturday’s and our nocturnal meetings. It was an after-school activity for kids who didn’t join after-school activities. It was a social gathering for kids like me who didn’t play a sport or have any real interest or talents I guess. It could become a kind of regular thing with no rules or expectations.”
Speaking of expectations this quote above is what I thought/believed/hoped Nocturnal Meetings of the Misplaced was going to be about. But quickly and sadly learned that it was not.
What I was expecting was something sort of like The Kings of Summer with those Lord of the Flies vibes. You know, young teenaged boys running rampant in the woods at dark that becomes the start of a type of cultish wild and primal mischievous gang of kids..........?......Something along those lines.
Nocturnal Meetings of the Misplaced was instead more of a contemporary or thriller I’d say?
Let me touch on what I did appreciate:
-Thorough character and world building.
-True to age teenagers whose thoughts, actions and reactions were much more realistic in their adolescence than most YA book teens are. I liked that. It felt real.
-Male pov. I greatly enjoy a male pov in the YA book world that is predominantly a female narrative.
-Character driven plot. The author really takes you into the lives of the characters here, even in 1st person, well done!
And now, what rubbed me the wrong way:
First of all trigger warning: There is domestic violence/child abuse. And while that is ugly enough in itself; it really put me off that the abuser is a sheriff. Now I understand that authorities aren’t perfect and aren’t all heroes and often abuse their power but it put me off, here are some quotes from this step-father/sheriff/child abuser aka “Polar Bear”:
“You are both dead!” Polar Bear Raged. “I’m going to kill you both and drop you in an abandoned well. No one will ever find either of you or give a shit!”
This adult character while still in uniform often yells these kinds of threats to children. It wasn’t believable to me.
Also thinking of young adolescent minds: I didn’t appreciate the cough syrup abuse by the 15 year old MC. Cough syrup abuse is already a problem and danger among teenagers and I understand this may (sadly) be relatable for readers but I felt this sort of glamorized it. Here is a quote:
“I guzzled some generic night-time cold medicine, knowing I wouldn’t be able to sleep without it.”
and again,
“I drank a little cold medicine and crashed on Isabella’s floor.”
(Disclaimer: Thought I should point out that no, I wasn’t bothered by the marijuana use mostly because I am from California and it’s legal here. But also because marijuana doesn’t have side effects such as liver damage like with ibuprofen or acetaminophen in cold medicine nor can you overdose and die from it—And no that doesn’t mean I believe children should be smoking marijuana. I’m saying there are healthier and more natural sleep aids and I didn’t like how this kid guzzles cough syrup when he can’t sleep! Don’t fight me on this, it’ll be pointless.)
I digress.
I also didn’t appreciate the racism and homophobia Although I understand it was specific to a character and that character’s development but I was surprised to see it in these fragile times where I don’t like to touch topics of racism with a ten foot pole. Here’s a quote:
“Hey faggot, get the hell out. Tell your little coloured sister that I said hi.”
and
“Sean interrupted her, asking if I was Mexican because I had black hair and brown eyes. Jess reached over the table and smacked him saying, “He looks white.” She pointed out, “He just has brown hair and brown eyes.” as if being Mexican would have been a bad thing.”
This conversation was uncomfortable to read. I just felt it was unnecessary and triggering. And as a “white person” I’d like to say we aren’t all this goddamn stupid and we aren’t all blonde and think if you’re not blonde you must be “something else” and actually wonder about it. Like should I walk around introducing myself saying “Hi, I have dark, dark, almost black hair and brown eyes, and olive coloured skin but I’m Caucasian—just in case you were wondering.” *eyeroll* No, we are all human. I see people.
And yes I understand this was about character development but let’s not get into Southerners and hillbilly stereotypes either....
I don’t know, I read a looooooooot of books and perhaps this was the first one I’ve come across with these topics and it just surprised me?
Overall a decent book, just not for me. I’d recommend it to the first teen boy in my life (I’m thinking of my nephews here) who actually showed an interest in reading. And also, of course, for anyone who enjoys this genre.

R. J Garcia`s Nocturnal Meetings of the Misplaced is a story about four friends bonded together by a neighborhood reeking of the creeps and twisted family relationships. Garcia`s writing is fluent and flexes mastery over small-town life, which is incredibly refreshing to read. As a teenager who`s lived in both the city and tiny towns in the middle of nowhere, I couldn`t help but nod in acknowledgment to the author`s authenticity when telling her story – It`s a difficult thing to find a book that portrays teenage characters as accurately as Garcia does, and even harder to find one that scores on setting and plot overall. Nocturnal Meetings of the Misplaced surprised me in all the rightNocturnal Meetings of the Misplaced ways, taking me on plot twists that I didn`t see coming, yet realistic enough to be believable. I`ll definitely be looking for Garcia`s work in the future and anticipate what she`ll bring readers next!

Fast paced mystery that will leave you breathless!
Tommy and his sister are sent away to live with their uncle. As they try to settle into their new home, Tommy learns of an old mystery that connects him. In a small town that holds a lot of secrets, Tommy and his friends search for more clues. Nothing is as it seems and as the story barrels forward like a runaway train there is no way you can put this story aside. If Tommy doesn’t figure out the mystery, he may be its next victim.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story and will watch for Ms Garcia’s next title.

If you think it is enough when you fall for the cover of a book. That is wrong in more ways than one.
It is absolutely true when I say that I fell in love with the cover of this book. It is not as grand as some, but it is gorgeous enough to catch a readers eye.
But what can be better than an eye candy of a cover? A ridiculously well laid out story.
Yes. You read that right.
This book is an amazing story of family, friendship, hope, loss, and acceptance. Plenty of things going on there, I know.
The characters in the story are so full and vibrant. It is as if they are truly alive as the story is not a fictional one written to entice the imagination of its reader but a reality written on paper to entertain.
Each of the characters has a distinct personality that is in no way similar to the other. But this distinction gave way to a great chemistry with them. They are aware of their differences, made up for that, and learn how to co-exist with one another.
One thing that I really want to say as well is that I didn’t expect this book to be a straight-up contemporary mystery. I was expecting it to be an urban fantasy kind of story. Although I didn’t get what I expected, I am shocked by how this went on.
The plot is not the best, but the execution of the story is what made this book stunning. I cannot even tell you how amazing it is without actually letting out a spoilery gush. So I suggest you just go and pick it up.
Overall, this book is a gem hidden inside a treasure trove waiting to be dug up. R.J. Garcia is a writer that captivates her audience with an amazing writing and very well founded characters.

If you think it is enough when you fall for the cover of a book. That is wrong in more ways than one.
It is absolutely true when I say that I fell in love with the cover of this book. It is not as grand as some, but it is gorgeous enough to catch a readers eye.
But what can be better than an eye candy of a cover? A ridiculously well laid out story.
Yes. You read that right.
This book is an amazing story of family, friendship, hope, loss, and acceptance. Plenty of things going on there, I know.
The characters in the story are so full and vibrant. It is as if they are truly alive as the story is not a fictional one written to entice the imagination of its reader but a reality written on paper to entertain.
Each of the characters has a distinct personality that is in no way similar to the other. But this distinction gave way to a great chemistry with them. They are aware of their differences, made up for that, and learn how to co-exist with one another.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I received an ARC from Expresso Tours. All opinions are my own. This book was well written and easy to read. I was hooked by chapter one. Tommy, Annie, Silence, and all the main characters in the story were very good and had a lot of character development. I enjoyed the mystery and suspense aspect of the story. This story was right up there with a good murder mystery show like castle, guilt, or any mystery/ suspense show really. I like the characters and how the story got intense at the ending. I was at the edge of my seat wanting to know what would happen. I liked all the realness in this story too. It didn't sugar coat things that are pretty sad or messed up. It felt like these were real people and not just a character made up. The ending was a pretty bittersweet moment and I was happy to read it. I will definitely read more from the author.

Nocturnal Meetings is beautifully written tale. It is told from dual prescriptive. Tommy is the main character who is removed from a drug-addicted mom, who he loves. Finn is the other narrator and Tommy's new neighbor and friend. He's living with an abusive stepfather who he hates. The boys also become close with two girls during late-night meetings in the woods. This story has it all. It is humorous and (warning) very sad at times with suspenseful moments laced throughout! All the pieces come together at the end like a puzzle! The characters stay with you after the book ends.

I was lucky to read an ARC of R.J. Garcia's deeply moving story about new friends meeting in a town with some very old secrets. R.J. Garcia spun an engaging tale that mixed coming of age moments with a thrilling and mysterious spin. I was so engaged during the climax that I completely missed my train stop! Well done!

Nocturnal Meetings of the Misplaced by R.J. Garcia is a slow burner, until it isn’t.
In a nutshell this extremely relatable and easy-to-read novel is about regret, dangerous secrets, love and hope. It effectively rips the lid off the idea that any small town is the sleepy, bucolic village that it initially appears to be.
A realistic situation where an adult falls through the cracks and her children experience the fallout becomes Tommy’s coming of age story, as he and his adorable, sister Izzy are sent from Chicago to Indiana to live with foster parents who also happened to be their estranged aunt and uncle on the maternal side.
The reader is unsure exactly where his mother is, why she’s gone or if she’s deceased? “No girl had the power to break your heart, the way your mom can.”
There was purpose to this, as we slowly find out who his mother is and we are given Tommy’s innermost thoughts. “Being polite was kind of a sickness with me. I don’t know why. It seemed easier, I guess.” Tommy hooked me at this statement. Somehow the author managed to be wry, earnest and achingly genuine all in a few sentences.
Rather than Tommy or Finn’s (his next door neighbor and cool, new friend) POV’s dragging the text down, they released it, as Tommy is going through what most of would relate to as a teen. Fitting in at a new school is tough, making new friends is a minefield, feeling shame or embarrassment for things we cannot control and having a genuine love for our younger siblings, empowered by the desire to protect them from the things that we already know.
Silence, Annie and Hailee are well-written female characters that brought back my conflicted, high school memories. They are teen girls pushing the envelope, exploring life, and their places in society as; the tough and beautiful loner, the unassuming and shy nerd, and the beauty queen with all the right stuff. They seem a bit older and wiser than their male counterparts.
Finn is going through something horrible too, but he doesn’t cry about it, look for validation from Tommy or ask anyone for sympathy. As much as I loved Tommy, I think I admired the character Finn as much or more? He’s a realist who doesn’t expect anyone to come save him and somehow still knows how to love. His stepfather is full of rage and jealousy for Finn’s loving and simplistic relationship with his mother. The need for Polar Bear to control everything comes out through his fists.
Mudget, Polar Bear’s son, a troubled teen from a former marriage is a chip off the old block. He’s the high school bully who seems about two clicks from also being the town murderer. The scene with Mudget and the teens in the woods was realistic and terrifying.
There is something creepy and dark about this town that’s different. It makes urban Chicago seem ten times safer than a tiny town in Indiana. The irony wasn’t lost on me.
More warning signs emerge after Polar Bear is introduced. He’s a classic antagonist and a character/person that unfortunately I have known in real life. There is more though. Not only is there a darkness that emerges, it’s clear that no one we meet in the story from now on is who we think they are.
By using sleight of hand and effortless profluence, the author takes us down the rabbit hole into the minds of truly disturbed people who have crossed the line of decency. They are monsters and somehow still roam free.
To say that this town has secrets is like exclaimining that water is wet.
The plot could have become a melodrama, but it didn’t, because the mystery is dropped in tasty, little bites. Tommy makes a decision after something horrible happens to Finn and a complex girl named Silence seems to be a target for an abuser. Tommy becomes self-appointed hero and protector of more than his little sister.
As in real life, Tommy is seeking a way out and trying to add reason to difficult things that sometimes don’t have one. He takes on the burden of finding the truth about something horrible that happened to someone many years ago. Perhaps in a youthful attempt to avoid having to deal with the fact that the only person who loves him back, with no strings is his sweet and kind, little sister Isabella.
One of the best things about this book is Tommy’s enviable ability to find the new and with everything that happens there is always a thread of hope that life will somehow get better. The author deftly explores complex relationships, love, abuse, the agony of drug addiction and the reader sees very clearly how tough it is for kids to not have a traditional childhood, as in two adults who are actively parenting and offering their offspring a safe haven.
When the truth is revealed, it puts everyone in danger and loss is inevitable. You might see some of it coming, but when what and who comes to light… it’s heartbreaking, and sad, but it also gives the possibility that truth offers all of us freedom and a release from human-fueled evil that is present and always around us.
A few of my favorite lines:

I chose to read this book after receiving a free e-copy. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.
Nocturnal Meetings of the Misplaced is about some kids in a small town in Indiana who find each other to get through some rough times and to figure out a mystery while they’re at it. In fact, the mystery makes a lot of things make more sense.
Tommy Walker has been through a lot in his short life. Now, he and his little sister have been taken away from their mom because she can’t stay off drugs. Luckily, their uncle is willing to take them in. Tommy’s mom has always told him that her parents are evil but when he meets them for the first time he thinks they seem like a couple of harmless old people. Could they really be so bad? He thinks she believed that but she was just a teen when she left.
Tommy’s new neighbor is Finn and they become friends quickly. Tommy realizes that Finn has had a rough life as well and still has to deal with his abusive stepfather who happens to be the sheriff.
These boys and their friend Silence didn’t really get to be kids. They’re all responsible for taking care of someone. So it’s an escape when they meet on Saturday nights in the woods. For that short time, they get to be kids and have a good time. And they’re at that age when puberty kicks in so now they’re also having to deal with new feelings. Poor Tommy doesn’t know how he feels about any of the girls who show interest in him.
R.J. Garcia does a great job of relating the thoughts and feelings of Tommy and Finn. The boys have been through so much and are so responsible for their age, yet immature when it comes to relationships. And, of course, they are teens so they do get into a little trouble.
Between the normal teenage turmoil, the dysfunctional families, and the town secrets, Nocturnal Meetings of the Misplaced was difficult to put down. When a book makes you laugh, makes you cry, and has a good ending, what more could you ask for? I definitely recommend Nocturnal Meetings of the Misplaced.

Tommy and his little sister have had a hard life with their mother who is in rehab. She finally loses custody of the children, and they are sent by the state to go live with an uncle, whom the children do not know, and the uncle’s wife, in a small town.
Although this new chapter in Tommy and Izzy’s life brings forth, a new town, a new home, and new guardians, Tommy and Izzy become comfortable, and Tommy meets some new friends whom he connects with instantly. This exclusive group of friends sneak out every Saturday night, at midnight, to meetup in the woods, and these meetings soon lead to clues about a cold kidnapping and murder case. As clues are discovered, Tommy takes it upon himself to get to the bottom of these unsolved mysteries. Along with the help of the gang, the group discovers suspicions that are unbelievable by most people.
I loved this book a lot! I read this in 2 days, I just could not put this down.
This book contains everything I love in a story: Drama, anticipation, love, mystery, suspense, and even a little romance. First and foremost, this is a Mystery and Suspense novel and the book sure delivered in this category!
I loved the way the book was written in general. The character perspectives change constantly from Tommy to Finn as well. I love a book that is told through different perspectives. It adds flare, individuality, and a level of insight that you just do not get when a book is limited through only one perspective.
The characters were delightfully written. I loved them right away, all of them. They were believable, and relatable.
This book is most definitely a Five Star Read! The plot, time-frame, story line were all on point!
This is a great book club read as it presents many opportunities for discussion questions!

I read this one so quickly, the strongly developed characters really had me ensnared with the first few chapters. I loved the small town with secrets where kids are trying to fix the problems the adults seem to ignore. The thing I enjoyed the most about the book was how it captured the horror of being a teenager. You are at the mercy of the adults around you and even if those adults mean well, they can end up causing harm. I recommend reading this book to anyone who is a fan of mysteries, it is fun and dark and full of suspense as well as a lot of heart.

Being a teenager in Summertime, Indiana, the fear of growing up is all too real. As a small group of friends in the book begin to discover old secrets and mysteries of the town—they also become aware that this knowledge could even prevent them from growing up.
Garcia has not only succeeded in writing a haunting coming of age novel, but a chilling mystery that will keep you on the edge of your seat and guessing up to the very end. I literally could not put it down!
If you’re looking for a fast paced read, with not only heart-pounding thrills, but characters who are as relatable as they are memorable, then I can’t recommend this book highly enough. I loved it!
I was captured by the author’s unique writing style from the moment I started reading until I was finished, finding her grasp of teenage emotions simply uncanny, as her characters are thrust into situations both dangerous and heartbreaking.
My heart went out to the two main characters, Tommy and Finn with the flipping of each new page. While seeming to have totally unconnected plights, as the story progresses, you learn their enemies have been the same all along ...and right when you think things can’t get worse for either of them—they do!
I can’t say enough about this book. If I could give it more than five stars I certainly would. Flag this one in your memory as a MUST READ and get your copy today!

"Some of the stars are long gone by the time their light reaches the earth."
When I first started to read this book I could not stop. I finished this book in one day because it fascinated me so much. The author put so many details into each sentence and it made you feel as if you were in the story yourself. This book has so much mystery and suspension, these are the types of books that teenagers today would love to read. I've read so many books and I know that this has to be the best one yet. I would give this book rating more than 5 stars if I could but for now, I guess I have to stick with the 5 star rating. I hope that you will continue to make more books like these and that you will be inspired by people in your everyday life.

Give me a sinister tale full of twisty turns and I'm hooked. This book really did pull me into the lives of Tommy, Finn, Silence, and Annie. I kept visualizing this creepy teen movie that has music playing in the background telegraphing danger is near. I couldn't stop reading! I knew something sinister was brewing underneath the surface and boy oh boy was there. This is definitely a cautionary tale. One that just might have you questioning that crazy relative that is always telling wild stories that everyone dismisses. After reading this book, you might just start to pay attention.
I can't recommend this story enough. But once you start reading, you better buckle up buttercup because you are in for the long haul. And you can forget about sleep! Even after the story concludes. I know I'm sleeping with the lights on tonight.
And if you have ever seen that movie, "The Visit" by M. Night, use that as a reference point. One reviewer had it right, this is definitely some "Flowers in the Attic" (insert word).
On a sweet note, I did enjoy the romance element too. I loved that it wasn't the insta love but rather a slow sweet realistic build from friendship to love. It really pulled at my heart. :)

I was given ARC of this book for an honest review. It may be my new favorite book! Tommy and his little sister are sent to live at a relative placement in the country by social services. The plot is suspenseful and riveting, keeping you wondering what is going to happen next. It is more than that. It is really about the four main characters getting to know one another during their late-night meetings. I almost got to know them better than I know some of my friends.
Tommy is the main character and plagued with bad luck and drama. He has you invested from the first chapter. Finn Wilds is his neighbor who lives with his abusive stepfather, a larger than life character. Finn and Tommy quickly bond over their misery. What can I say about Finn? This YA contemporary story opens with intrigue(like its cover!) and adds suspenseful layers all the way to the tumultuous end.

Once they arrive, Tommy ends up making new friends and getting himself involved in the investigation of a cold murder case from years before. The answers are closer to home than he ever assumed, putting him and his family in danger. But the group of friends won’t just sit back and do nothing.
The rag-tag cast of characters, budding friendships, mystery and wonderful writing pulled me along to the end.

I loved this book so much! A group of four friends – misfit kids from broken homes and out of place at school - have late night meetings in the woods where they can just hang out and be themselves. As their meetings progress, they start investigating a cold case where a woman was kidnapped and murdered. Slowly they begin to uncover dark secrets that lead them to dangerous places. This atmospheric book was filled with mystery and suspense. A story of undying friendship amid a small town where only ugliness is found. I highly recommend for fans of Stranger Things.

Nocturnal Meetings of the Misplaced was a fun, heartfelt, heart-tugging, twisty ride from beginning to end. I loved the characters and the mysteries that surrounded them.

Nocturnal Meetings of the Misplaced by R.J. Garcia is a book about a group of friends who meet up late at night in the woods.
Tommy, with his little sister Izzy is sent to live with his uncle and uncle’s wife due to his mom having failed drug testing. There, he meets Finn, his neighbor who’ll later become his bestfriend.
The author successfully developed strong characters, each of them having their own uniqueness. Tommy and Finn are really friendship goals! Have you ever meet someone and you just knew that you just met your bestfriend for life? Well, that’s Tommy and Finn for you. I loved how Tommy cared for his little sis. It made me want a big brother! He’s like this knight and protector in the eyes of Izzy and its sooo adorable!
Finn is as strong as he can be. Although, not physically. I really admire him for standing up to what is right and for always being there for his friends. He’s my fave character in the book! Silence is a tough girl. She takes care of her mother in an old house and she isn’t afraid to do something. She literally is not scared to do anything + not scared to express her feelings! Annie is the same age as Finn and Tommy and I wish she got more spotlight. Among the 4 friends, she’s the least known and I wish I could’ve known her better. She seems interesting.
The book was easy to read. I’ve got nothing against the writing. Although, the first part is a little slow which I understood since that’s the time for introductions and adjustments. There was a time that I had no idea what was happening and what to expect but there’s something in the book that made me continue reading it until the end. It turned out to be so great, once I reached the second half, I couldn’t put it down!
They’re like this group of young detectives in search for the truth behind a cold-case murder and kidnapping. It actually reminded me of Detective Conan, lol. (Hello to the fans of the anime!)
The plot twists literally got my mouth hanging open because I didn’t expect it at all and all the pieces kind of finally fit together. The latter part kept me at the edge of my seat and I just couldn’t stop reading! It was so great I just lied down and stared at the ceiling when I finished it.
I recommend this to fans of mystery and contemporary! Overall, I rate Nocturnal Meetings of the Misplaced by R.J. Garcia, 4 out of 5 stars.

This is my second time reading R.J. Garcia's debut novel. I enjoyed it all over again, because her storytelling is so good (I also enjoyed and recommend her second novel, The Call of Death, out now!).
If you've not read Nocturnal Meetings of the Misplaced, I advise you do. This is middle-school, young adult suspense worthy. Young siblings Tommy and Izzy have it rough. They've been in foster care due to their mother's drug addiction. Originally from Chicago, the two are sent to a couple in Summertime, Indiana, a small, blink and you'll miss it, place totally opposite to what Tommy is used to.
In Summertime, he meets Finn and two girls, Annie, and Silence ( I thought that was an odd first name for a girl, but as you read on, you learn why her name is like a living metaphor). There's not a lot going on in Summertime - unless you count the mysteries of haunting cries, a death and missing girls and women. When Tommy's curiosity about what goes on and what happened in Summertime years ago, he discovers he and his new friends have more in common than they imagine.
R.J. and I go back to college days, and I did not know then how gifted she is as a writer. Her character development and plots are so detailed. Not one time did I get lost in the plot. I highly suggest you read this debut. It flows beautifully in words and descriptions of characters, locations and story.

This is my first review so I hope I do this book justice. Nocturnal Meetings left me happy and sad and wanting more of these incredible characters. The story opens when Tommy Walker and his little sister, Izzy move in with their Uncle and his wife that they never even met, after their mom's arrest. Tommy soon meets his neighbor, Finn. They are going through a lot and have this beautiful, cool connection and friendship. I even shipped them at first. The boys meet up with two girls in late night meetings in the woods. One of the girls is Annie. She is a sweet, shy, wallflower type of girl. Silence Harper, the youngest and most advanced in the group. A lot of angst and suspense, yes romance had me holding my breath at times. Some crazy things suddenly happen in the story during the most ordinary moments. So expect the unexpected! An exciting and thought-provoking read.

Opinions: Deep breath, deep breath... I LOVE THIS BOOK SO MUCH and I couldn't have read it any faster. Five stars are awarded for its key features - voice, writing style, atmosphere, character struggles, pop culture references, and themes - even though everything in this book is engaging and resonating. Something I noticed immediately and appreciate is Garcia's writing style, which is exactly the same in all of her books even though the plots are drastically different! This consistency shows competence and passion for writing, two traits I admire. I also can't get over the atmosphere! Even in the most casual times, readers are one the edge of their seats because of the eerie undertones and rather sadistic characters. Said characters are the most intriguing part of the books because they all have different struggles. Ethnic differences within families, sexuality, bullying, the list goes on. I truly appreciate this part of the book because of how powerful it is yet "meaningless" to the main plot; if you took removed the inner struggles, you would have the same plot, same resolution. Yet Garcia took the extra step to spice up the plot and teach the readers an extra lesson or two about self respect and pride. All in all, I was incredibly impressed with all of the elements of Nocturnal Meetings of the Misplaced by Garcia and would reread it in a heartbeat. Also, take a look at that cover!
My Favourite Thing: My absolute favourite thing about Nocturnal Meetings of the Misplaced was the variety of character flaws and voices. These small-town Indianans are sarcastic, casual, and vocal with their beliefs and thoughts, thus drawing readers in and shocking them with every word said. It was the perfect addition to the spooky atmosphere and "hillbilly" farmers scaring kids. And, as I said above, each character has their own inner struggles that readers can relate to and empathise with. These features made Nocturnal Meetings of the Misplaced an absolute dream!
My Least Favourite Thing: After a long thing and serious consideration, I cannot find a single thing I dislike about Nocturnal Meetings of the Misplaced! It is heartfelt, creative, and resonating with readers; everything you'd expect in a YA book! I highly recommend this book to teens looking for a familiar twist on crime and an interesting twist on fantasy. Enjoy!
