Mistaken Identity

Rate this book
On a scale of awkward to totally catastrophic, Kelly Bennett has managed to hit every level of “Oh. My. God.” in just one night.

Kelly decides her older, uptight girlfriend Paula needs a bit of loosening up during her birthday party. When she finds her curled up in bed, Kelly leaps her bones, adds a few restraints, and one satisfied lover later, sneaks out… only to run into her girlfriend, Paula, in the hallway.

After the shock wears off, leaving a puddle of guilt, recriminations, and a now ex-girlfriend, Kelly’s left with one burning question: who was that woman in the bedroom? Was it Paula’s best friend? Her deplorable assistant? One of her flatmates?

And why did she go along with it?

There’s nothing left for it: Kelly’s on a mission to find out and apologise.

The course of lesbian true love is about as smooth as a porcupine in this quirky dramedy of errors.

This is my favorite story I have read by Jay. I believe I have read five of her works including shorts, novellas and books. And it seems to me with every new piece or writing she puts out, the better they get. This is a steamy feel good romance.

What I really enjoyed about this book is it started out with a pretty big, mouth dropping, OMG moment. It’s just sucked me in and I was hooked for the rest of the book. I’m not going to write a summary as I don’t want to ruin this for anyone. The surprise of it and the little mini mystery that followed needs to be experienced fresh by a new reader.

I do want to mention this book does have BDSM elements but it is on the lighter side. I personally would put this book in the steamy romance category not erotica. I know some people see those four letters and get a little wary about them. I would actually say this is a good book for people who haven’t read much BDSM, or wanted to try reading about it but don’t want to be overwhelmed.

I’ve mentioned this before in other reviews for Jay’s work, but it bears repeating, Jay writes good realistic characters. She writes about everyday women that are not these contortionist sex acrobats. After a character was kneeling for a long while, she had to get the blood pumping back through her legs. Little realism like that just appeals to me. It makes the whole scene in your head all that more realistic and I just appreciate it. It’s something not a lot of other authors tend to do especially when it’s around a love scene.

Overall I just enjoyed this story. It was definitely the feel good kind. While there is some conflict, there is none of the usually angst we seem to see in half the lesfic romances out there. None of my little pet peeve things I love to complain about in romances was in this book, which I appreciate for a change. If you are looking for a feel good steamy romance, grab this book and enjoy.

An ARC was given to me for a honest review.

4 stars. This was rather a unique spin on the genre and I liked it a lot. All characters were enjoyable and the sex scenes were HOT. I love me some loving BDSM action. My only issue with the book is that it's basically a series of very unlikely coincidences. Almost all major plot turns were those unlikely coincidences so that's where that one star went.

But other than that it's a really good read. I enjoyed it.

Okay, back in the country and finally somewhere with decent WiFi and internet connection. My god, it was like being back in the 90s.

Anywho, wanted to give this interesting book a proper review and not end up screaming at my phone after losing yet another review to the ether.

Let me say front and centre that I came to really like this book (having read it twice now). The main two characters were in interesting and likeable, the dialogue was at points laugh out loud funny and even the secondary characters had flesh on their bones.

Overall, this book get a high recommendation from me and is super hot (phew, definitely not to be read in public or while nominally in charge of children). The pacing was great, dialogue well scripted and plot (while slight) was very enjoyable.

If I have one slight criticism, the first part seemed a bit wandering and it was a brave decision to not really reveal the second main character until about a quarter of the way through the book. However, when the initial issues are put to rest, OMG thing really start rocking.

All I want to say to the author is keep writing, each book gets better and better.

Brilliant!

One incredible late night action threatens to tear her world apart. I couldn't solve the puzzle, it kept me guessing for a long time. WOW, what a story! I was glued to the pages and I immediately clicked with the characters. A very well written story with a lot of steamy hot scenes and naughty foreplay. Also the humor was not forgotten. The author did a great job of keeping all the excitement flowing and there was never a dull moment with Kelly. I was absolutely enthralled by the storyline and this book is high on my list of favorites.

I was hooked right from the beginning and immersed to the end. Not much can be said without ruining it suffice to say that Kelly is a wonderful main character -likeable, self-aware and with a touch of kink - surrounded by an interesting array of other characters. Mistaken Identity is funny, witty and sexy with great dialogue, expressive relationships and a great story line.

I want to say this is the first book I have read from Donna Jay and certainly will not be my last. I really enjoyed it and the beginning, like many other reviewers have stated, really did grab my attention. I will admit that I was hoping for a little more drama and angst but I liked the book just the same. Plus it's available on Scribd!

Although my wife would likely never forgive me for such a misunderstanding, the case of Mistaken Identity at the core of Donna Jay's kinky little romance is a lot of fun. It is an honest mistake, even if it was helped along a little by alcohol, and the moment Kelly realizes the confusion is beautifully handled.

Just imagine if you had orally pleasured the wrong woman, a woman who knows who you were, but who remains a complete mystery to you. It is a delightful way to kick off a comic, sometimes kinky, romance.

As is often the case with Donna's work, it is the characters who make it so enjoyable, and the honesty of their encounters that keep the story grounded. I loved the age difference between Kelly and Paula, and thought that was a great way to bring us into the story, but the other romance was even more intriguing. The BDSM elements are subtle and playful, entirely suitable to novice readers to dabble in, and the emotions are even more exciting than the physical sensations.

I was afraid this was going to get dark, sad, or confrontational, given the fact that it opens with an accidental act of infidelity, which leads to distracted longing, with at least one partner who is kind of a witch-with-a-b, but Donna keeps it tight and positive. I was equally afraid the 'big reveal' of Kelly's lover might not live up to the anticipation, but it does . . . and then some. Mistaken Identity is a fun read, a delightful romance with as much heart as humor, and far more chemistry than kink. Another fab read!

This book starts with a big bang after a few pages, which throws Kelly’s world into a tumbler. And I was hooked on the story.

I don’t want to tell more about the storyline, it would reveal too much of the story. But I can tell you, it is a very exciting and hot romance. There are some light BDSM moments, but not the tough ones. Personally, I’m not much in BDSM, but these scenes were pretty hot.

I loved the storyline very much, till about 25% you don’t know which one is the second main character beside Kelly. This is unusual but interesting and exciting.

I liked the two main characters very much, they are real women in a real world. With doubts and hopes like everyone. The dialogues are great, also the humor isn’t missing, and it is a wonderful romance

This was a entertaining love story set in New Zealand. Donna Jay gave us a sweet love story about two women who meet under very weird circumstances (yowzah!) and it takes a bit before they realize who they are to each other (not spoiling because it's more fun not to know). Add an unpleasant soon-to-be ex-girlfriend, a couple of great friends and some hot bdsm sexy times and you have the bare bones of Mistaken Identity.

f/f explicit

Themes: bdsm, New Zealand, loveable main characters, not too much dramarama, some saucy slap-and-tickle, just a fun read.

I’m writing this review and I’m still giggling, I can’t take the smirk out of my face. It kept me awake since the very night I started reading it.

Kelly is attending the party of her girlfriend, Paula, when she suggests to her to take the party in the bedroom and leave the guests to themselves. But just when Kelly thought her fantasy was about to become reality, it turned into a surreal nightmare that would change her life forever. And what an epic nightmare! I won’t say any more words about it.

This book is funny and so unbelievable sexy, if you are into letting your fantasy be awaken and exploring the boundaries of what makes or breaks couples, do yourself a favor and read it.
It made me think that sometimes Fate plays some good tricks on you, that even from something that apparently can be bad, the outcome can be just something so beautiful to take your breath away.

I loved the main character Kelly, as she’s proud of who she is and what she does, not everybody needs to be a CEO of a company to feel you are accomplished or even superior than others. A bartender, a milk tanker driver aren’t different than any other person. It makes my blood boil when people are judged by what they do as a job. What I loved also about her is the duplicity of her character, the insecurities and tenderness of some moments and the confidence between the sheets, as a dominant personality. And her sense of family, or friendship! Nicole and Steve are just such a cute and odd couple, I enjoyed all the dialogues between them and Kelly, so supportive, just like how real friends should be.

I’m not going to mention the name of the other main character, as I don’t want to spoil it for the others. I literally devoured the first chapters as if I was reading a detective story.
But in the end, what I liked the most about Mistaken Identity it's that it's so arousing when you find someone that trusts you so deeply, that they abandon any sense of control to let you be in charge, to worship them, to bring them to ecstasy. Wow, just wow!

The atmosphere in the book is so hot that you’ll end up fanning yourself together with the main characters.

And the settings, so beautifully written and they brought back so many memories to me.
Me and my wife were in New Zealand exactly in 2016, on a trip from Auckland to Kaikoura by train first and then from Wellington back up to Auckland with a Jucy van. We had just left the Southern Island and were in Rotorua when we heard the news about the earthquake. Fate…

Loved the Te Papa museum!

This is the first book by Donna Jay I read so far, but I already feel like I want more!

Another great book from Donna Jay. This book is so much fun and the main character Kelly is feisty and forthright which gives her unfortunate scenario a great twist. It’s also set in New Zealand and for me that is a pretty big tick straight away being one of my favourite countries to have ever spent time in.

Kelly likes kink however her girlfriend, Paula just isn’t that into it. One night at one of Paula's infamous social gatherings they decide to have a little quick fun during the party but one false move turns Kelly’s world upside down and it will never be quite the same again.

This is going to be a short review because truthfully I don’t want to spoil the plot or ending in this book. I really enjoyed the concept of the book, the storyline intrigued me from the very beginning and to be honest, left me a little stunned. Donna Jay is one of my favourite authors when it comes to writing a book with kink and she continued to blow me away with with every scene she comes up with.

I did find that the protagonist fell in love rather quickly and that there were quite a few secondary characters to keep in my mind when trying to work out the puzzle that's embedded into the storyline.

This book was just fun from the beginning to the end and it makes me excited for what will come next from Donna Jay.

Rounding up.

I was so curious about how this story would be handled based on the synopsis. It was okay with the first concerns being about ensuring everything was actually consenual. While the "meet cute" was a bit of a stretch, it was still somewhat plausible.

One thing I did enjoy was that for the first 30ish percent, you have the main character trying to figure out who they had their tryst with. It was like a mini mystery since I did not reread the synopsis before diving in.

There is quite a bit of BDSM in this book. While it is a little tamer than a few of the other Donna Jay books I have read, it is good to keep a note in case that's not your thing.

Again a very good book by Jay. Enjoyed the read very much and am sad that I have (for now) read al her books.
I enjoyed the tension the “mistake” brought with itself and again am happy that the book’s about normal people.

It’s rare that I pick up a work of erotic fiction, and generally my expectation for the quality of writing and storytelling tend to be low, and admittedly biased. But Donna Jay’s Mistaken Identity isn’t like most of the other erotic works I’ve reluctantly read because of recommendations, or mistakenly picked up in the past. While there are a few heavily detailed erotic scenes that did include BDSM, they aren’t the primary focus of the novel and the plot kept me intrigued throughout, leading to a couple late nights when I was too eager to find out what would happen next to tear myself away and put it down for the night.

Jay’s characters have depth, flaws, making them come across as very real and human, always a big plus. She does a fantastic job with character development and working it in throughout the novel rather than just dumping it all on readers at the very start.

Jay also manages the difficult feat of bringing the story and the characters to life enough that at times I felt like I was someone lingering in the background of the story rather than curled up in bed reading a book.

3.25 stars - This was pretty good, but I didn't enjoy it as much as I did the author's previous book, Finding Love Down Under. I didn't find anything wrong with it.

The writing is strong, and I liked the dialogues between the characters, but the story and the characters didn't interest me as much, and that's okay. I would still recommend this. It has some sweet moments and some good hot sex scenes if you like a bit of spanking.

Donna has once again written a love story with a little steam, but this one comes with some mystery too! Set in her home country of New Zealand, she takes us on an adventure in love! Does an evening at her girlfriend's house party end on a high point or with too many questions? Well written with great characters. You should definitely pick this one up!

I had this book on my tbr list for a long time and actually don’t know why I waited so long until finally starting to read it. After I did I’m so happy about it. So far I loved all of Donna’s book and for this one it isn’t any different.

The book starts rather different than other books by Kelly thinking that she is hooking up with her girlfriend and realizing right after it wasn’t her. Kelly is devastated then even if her girlfriend Paula isn’t the most kind and loving person, Kelly isn’t a cheater. Kelly tries with her friends to find out who it was which leads to some very funny scenes. While she is doing this she also realises that her girlfriend definitely isn’t the one for her.

I definitely was tapping in the dark like Kelly. Those I thought that could be the mystery woman weren’t it in the end. But circumstances and maybe some coincidence brings light in the darkness and a great love story. One that is maybe a bit different than in other wlw stories. But that’s exactly how the whole book is and what I loved so very much about it. You also get some bdsm like you get in most of Donna‘s books. And let me tell you some scenes were incredibly hot. They will make you wanna get a cold shower.

I highly recommend this book to everyone that loves Donna’s books and likes to read something that’s a bit different to the usual romance stories.

This is the delightful sapphic romantic adventure of dominant Kelly and her search for the submissive chick that she made out with. Who was it? A humorous series of events will add to your enjoyment. Rather mild BDSM. The story takes place in New Zealand. Read this book now! XOXOXOs to the author, Donna Jay, for creating this fun tale:)

To be honest, this is a book in a genre I usually don't read. But I am glad I did because it surprised me in a positive way. Personally I am not appealed by role playing and BDSM in the bedroom. I am not particular a fan of erotica either. But Donna Jay took me as a reader into the journey of Kelly and Lucy. A journey that contains BDSM. The subject is handled with so much care that it is easy to go with the flow and forget my own prejudice. It is a well written story with little angst. The start is like the first downhill of a roller coaster. So fasten your seatbelts (no pun intended) and let yourself be taken away.

This is the first book I’ve read from Donna Jay. I’ve read this two years ago but haven’t rated it (‘cause I don’t have GR before 😁) so I read it again.
Not even a quarter of the book, you will surely have the biggest surprise. My reaction was “OMG!! WTH?! 😱”
This was supposed to be a steamy romance (which still is ) but because of what happened during the party, it became somewhat a thrilling mystery. I was on the edge, my mind was whirring and guessing while reading page after page.
Be aware that it contains a little light BDSM, so of it’s not your cup of tea, better put it down. But if you feel adventurous, this will be a very good start for you.
Donna Jay’s writing were very realistic - the situations, the conflicts, and the characters. The MCs were relatable, charming and witty. I really like both Lucy and Kelly and their chemistry was so hot!!! Not to mention the sex scenes (yes, scenes!), it will surely leave you hot and bothered.
A light BDSM, steamy hot romance with a heart...

The catalyst for this book of one of the lights off and mistaken identity, which kicks the story into gear. It's an interesting place to launch your main character's journey.

Kelly is 25 and going out with a controlling woman 10 years her senior. Her girlfriend Paula is a bit of an a** and it takes a while for Kelly to realise it. In the meantime, she realised that she had an adventure in the dark with someone not Paula, and she has no idea who it was. Going through the list of women at the party and trying to work it out isn't narrowing the field, and is leading to all sorts of tricky situations.

This was quite a fun book. Kelly is definitely 25, but her best friend Nicole is a hoot and it's fun to see them interact with a slightly older group of women, and the culture clash that exists from 25 to 35.

The other thing to mention is that there is some light BDSM in the book, referred to in the book as kink. it's interesting to see the characters trying to come to terms with their particular flavour of desire, and dealing with their internal judgements as well as those of others.

There was a lot to like in this book. It was a fairly light take on an adventure by accident.

This book was provided for free by the author and Love Bytes in exchange for an honest review.

This review was first posted to Love Bytes: LGBTQ Book reviews. It has been slightly edited here for content.

I think this is the first book I’ve read that could be described as a “kinky whodunnit,” and that definitely isn’t a bad thing! The blurb keeps this book pretty vague, and so will I, because it will pay off as you read and figure things out with the characters. The general gist is that Kelly sneaks into a dark bedroom and rocks a woman’s world thinking she is Paula, her girlfriend, but she turns out to be a different woman attending the same party. And the sex is hot enough for Kelly to want to seek out this mystery woman and see what else she’s got up her sleeve. This is the whole first half of the book, and I totally loved it. It brought the steam, laughs, and intrigue in equal measure, and it was unlike any romantic set-up I’ve read before.

I won’t give any spoilers to the identity of the mystery woman, but when she and Kelly do finally get together and uncross all the wires, it’s totally scorching. Kelly allows her to explore long-repressed BDSM fantasies in a sensual, supportive environment, and Kelly herself gets to become the bossy, stern domme she’s wanted to be with her partner for years. It’s really excellent lesbian BDSM erotica on all fronts. I especially enjoy the verbal aspects and how Kelly eases her partner into some delightful dirty talk.

I do think the plot of this book needed a little bit more tightening. It could’ve easily been extended into two or three books (and I’d definitely read them all). There’s the mystery plot, then the beginning of the romance, then the snuggly domestic stuff—all awesome, but it almost seemed too formulaic, especially paired with such kinky sexual material and a unique story set-up. I got a bit of tonal whiplash as we moved quickly past the mystery and into a more conventional erotic romance. It’s a good romance, just a little clunky at times. The great chemistry between the main characters paired with an original set-up made this a great contemporary lesbian romance despite the few small flaws.

I am a huge fan of Donnas books, and this one makes it to the top of my list.

Like in all of her books I read so far, the two girls are absolutely adorable and are really sticking together and completing each other.

There is some BDSM-Light in the book. I normally avoid more intense stuff, but in this case I found it very erotic and enjoyable.

Donna included a lot of information about New Zealand in her book. Thanks to street view it is possible to follow the girls around for a bit.

Kelly is completely mortified and mystified at the same time, as she is trying to figure out with whom she spent an hour of passion in the dark bedroom at her girlfriends party…. and there are a lot of possibilities. It is just clear, that it was not her girlfriend. (For those who are offended by that kind of stuff - there is no intentionally cheating in this book).

With this setup it felt like Donna is playing a little kinky game with the reader. She kept teasing nearly half the book with possibilities. I had to literally restrain myself to not look ahead.
After lifting the blindfolds the first time, I thought "oh yes - I knew it" just to be teased a little longer, because I knew nothing.
Finally - the release - and I was happy to see that I could have known all along.
And no, I don't tell.

Donna Jay continues to impress me with her ability to incorporate bdsm into romance in a way that makes it feel like an ordinary aspect of a relationship. By that I mean that there aren't a lot of broody dark scenes, with broken people seeking painful punishment to expiate their perceived sins. Instead, we get a look at well-adjusted people who have found that a bit of kink spices up their sex lives in a way that makes them feel... more. They're able to get closer to each other, to become more intimate, because the things they're into make them communicate clearly and honestly with each other.
Kelli starts this book in a relationship with the wrong person. It isn't just that Paula ridicules Kelli's desire for kinky sex, it's the fact that Paula doesn't see Kelli as someone to stand up for, or treat with respect. The incident that leads to their breakup is difficult to wrangle, with all of the conflicting emotions that surround it. There's definitely a part that says the unknown partner in the liaison had ample opportunity to put a stop to things, but there's also a part that says perhaps she was too confused about actual events to object. And there's definitely a different reaction altogether at the thought of how the event would be perceived if Kelli were male. A large portion of these feelings are resolved when we learn the identity of our mistaken lover, and hear about the incident from her perspective, but the whole thing did make me really think about my own preconceived notions.
I loved the tension in the beginning of this story, where I'm right beside Kelli trying to figure out who it could possibly be. I definitely was not disappointed upon learning who it actually was, and I enjoyed the story of the two of them exploring their fantasies together and finding someone who truly fit with what they were looking for. This is definitely another favorite of mine in terms of bdsm stories, and I'll keep coming back for more as long as Jay writes this kind of kink.

4.5 stars! I really enjoyed this book.

The characters have relatable personalities, there’s good humour between friends, a few one liners that cracked me up.

I wasn’t expecting the BDSM, so I was pleasantly surprised. However, I felt that Kelly didn’t have the dominant personality, which for me made the sex awkward. But that’s just my opinion.

So yeah, good book all round.
