Sarah J. Maas is the #1 bestselling author of the Throne of Glass, Court of Thorns and Roses, and Crescent City series. Her books have sold millions of copies and are published in thirty-eight languages. She lives in New York City with her family.
This was so good! after reading so many kids series, finally something that isn't afraid to get its ideas out. This is dark and gritty. Even though it has magic, even the magic has rules, so it feels like less Harry Potter and more game of thrones. Warning: in these books, people are tortured on-screen, there's blood, people swear, and you see many people have......you know( sorry). You can feel how much has happened to Celena, and the hell she's been in for over 10 years. you learn the journey of how after countless adventures and stories and battle, she finally, finally find her way back home. A must-read. I love this more than I do hunger games, the hobbit, Narnia, and Harry Potter combined.
The Throne of Glass series is one I grow to love more the deeper into the series I get. Whilst the first book did pull me in, it wasn’t until I was part way through the series that I found myself unable to put the books down.
The series is far from perfect, with a number of issues consistent throughout all the books. The speed is regularly slower than you would like. Quite a lot of aspects are quite predictable. The romance is rather overbearing at points. Some of the characters are clichés. Despite all of this, there are many good points. The series is all kinds of addictive. There are so many layers to each book. The story is wonderfully connected between the books. You come to love and hate characters, your emotions being altered regularly.
Honestly, it’s a wonderful series. It’s not the best I have ever read, but it is more than worth the read.
I like this series. It’s a little raw in places and I probably would not recommend it for young readers. If you like fantasy, you’ll like this. It’s well written and keeps your interest.
First of all. The first few books up to Heir of fire just DRAGGED on and on. Yes there was information needed but oh my god I was praying for literally anything to happen. Heir of fire was good. Then the rest of the series if it could go wrong it did. No one including the readers got any break it was just hit after hit and like a super long obnoxious Michael bay action scene. Once again it just dragged on and on fighting some wins not manny then fighting again and again. I kept putting it down because I was just done and still had 500 pages.
Over all good story and plot. Some main characters super u likeable. Definitely should have combined TOD and EOS could have been done in one book.
Not something I recommend but not shocking for a first series.

I'm gonna give this entire series 4 stars because it's super fun, but there are definitely problems with it. For the pros, I think Maas does a great job at forcing you to become emotionally invested in her characters. I like all of the action and intrigue. I love how the main character is her own person and not constantly being saved by the various sexy males around her; instead, she's an incredible fighter in her own right and saves the day numerous times. There's an incredible bromance between the prince and Chaol that I know you'll love. The author is quite good at world-building, and I never really had a problem following along when they would move around from place to place. I also take shallow pleasure in the fact that everyone is super hot and capable in this series, which is a running theme in all of her books. I do NOT, however, enjoy it when the main character is never, ever wrong. There's no way that she can be that good at literally everything and so smart that she always outwits the baddies in the story. The main character will come up with a plan, the bad guy will be like "actually I knew about your plan, you're toast you idiot female" and the main character will be like "WELL actually I knew YOU knew about my plan, so I set in motion ANOTHER top secret plan months ago that totally crushes any counterattack you could possibly do" and she wins against impossible odds in a cloud of glory in which none of her friends die, etc. etc. If this happened just once, I would have been fine with it, but it happens constantly, and Maas does this in her other series as well. How about some setbacks caused by the main character for once? How about a slice of humble pie, Maas? It would make your main characters much more relatable, please think about it. Also, just fair warning, there's no way that this series is suitable for readers 12+, no fucking way.
I gave this book 3 stars...... mainly because of how much the main character annoyed me. (oh also, MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD)
When I first started reading the book, I thought I would love the main character, Celaena Sardothien. She was the best assassin in the world, smart, strong, funny, beautiful, oh and of course, humble. It seemed from even the very beginning of the book, the author chose to tell us how amazing Celaena was by having her tell us, instead of showing us. And, despite all of Celaena's so-called greatness, all she really seemed to do was flirt, sleep, and eat candy.
Despite all of this, I really enjoyed the first book. I knew what I was reading was pretty bad, but I didn't care. It was mildly enjoyable at least. Then the horror of Crown of Midnight came.......
I'm sorry, but WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED. That seemed to be the worst part of the series, there were so many ridiculous plot twists that didn't make any sense whatsoever. Like how she was suddenly a powerful fairy princess? I mean, come on. Another bad thing about the second book is how Celaena went completely batshit crazy, and tried to kill all of her friends over a tiny misunderstanding. After that, I was done, and couldn't handle anymore.
So, if you want my advice, this book is mediocre at best, and just keeps going downhill. I wouldn't really recommend, and I'm completely dumbfounded by those who think this book is amazing, to each his own I guess. I have heard Sarah J. Mass's other series is much better, so I think I'll give those books a go once I have time. xoxo, Jennifer
1. Heir of Fire was absolutely stunning this time around. It has grown to be my favorite in the series I think. I just love the transition from darkness to light and the way Rowan stands by her as a friend to bring her back, to pull her back and help her find herself. I just love the progression of their relationship and the stunning, tear-jerking moments with the Valg and Maeve. So good!
2. Assassin’s blade is a longstanding favorite of mine. I love Sam Cortland and it lures me in every single time. One of the things I love about Rowan is his reverence for Sam and how Heir of Fire remarks upon those Arlin had lost and those she loves and how that gives her strength.
3. Queen of Shadows was my favorite book, excluding the novellas, the first time around. It was so epic and so exciting. Such a triumphant book!
4. Empire of Storms has rose in my favor with my copy. It’s crazy to see everything that has been setting up and how everything is coming together, between knowing more about Elena and that’s Lock and the armies coming. The connections are crazy.
5. Throne of Glass is such and excellent start to this series. It sets up the series so easily and I love the relationship that develops between her and Dorian.
6. Crown of Midnight has never been one of my favorites, but the transition is essential for Heir of Fir and I love how it sets up some deep and important plot points of the series. So fun to read when you catch everything the second time around.
It is incredible how a book with such great intro and setup can evolve into incredibly dull and cliché book.
Characters are bland and boring, they hardly ever evolve. They are all just so perfect - everyone is beautiful, smart and strong. If you see male and female character exchanging more than 2 sentences, you can guess what will happen next. Relationships are creepy, unhealthy and borderline abusive, yet presented as something that is to be praised and good.
Plot is so-so. It starts off well, but then whenever writer seems to be stuck, the protagonist reveals his/her secret plan that was never even hinted, foreshadowed or anything. It's jut lazy writing. I read all the books in the series because I hoped something good will happen, but nothing ever did in the end. My friend couldn't even read the last book.
It's funny how the reviews are changing from "Masterpiece" to a "disaster-piece". To be fair - Mass did a great job at wrold buliding. Especially with the stories and the legends. BUT A good book needs more than just a good wrold bulding technique. I know that diffrent readers like diffrent styles of writing, but to me the writing style was too superficial and had too much role play, rather than an epic fantasy book. The characters are superficial, not authentic and they all just dance around the MC without any original thoughts or actions.
And the main character... Mass is telling us she is such an amazing assassin, the most dreadful of them all. I dont want to spoil it, but let me just say it is very hard to believe in something you never actually saw (or read). The plot was OK i guss? It IS getting bertter as the series goes on, but a lot of the themes are cliche and predictible and it is just not good enough.
So yeah, i didnt like it, i didnt like all the buzz around the series. I do think Maas has great potential, but i am still wont recommand this serie.
Read the whole series in a course of a week in a half, and although some books were flop others prevailed.
All I have to say is Rowan Whitethorn. He was and still is what lingers for this whole series. He was worth every bit to keep on reading. Aelin, had to get through almost two novels to get to him but once he came into view everything was worth it. She not only came into herself as soon as they bonded but his presence alone made it captivating and compelling. The dynamics between him and Mauve’s squad was interesting, and to have everyone mix and co-mingle in the end was interesting as well.
I was routing for Kale to find love as well as Doran, without Aelin being their love interest since they clearly weren’t right for each other; but I liked to see the progression of all these characters.
The series still stuck with me even after reading others which is why they are ranked so high, even more than the ACOTAR series.
Throne of Glass was my emotional support book series throughout my twenties. I'll be first to admit it isn't perfect - SJM has many writing quirks and crutches - but I swear all of that is part of the fun. A comfortable brain off fantasy adventure that gets better with each reread. I adore the swaggering heroine, always with a scheme up her sleeve, hopeful for a better world in spite of herself. It's got all the good stuff - assassins, magic, witches, fae, wyverns, and more. Spoiler-free tips you might want to know before starting:
-don't judge too harshly by the first book, which is by far the worst. -please read the Assassin's Blade prequels AFTER BOOK 2. -Queen of Shadows (#4) and Empire of Storms (#5) are peak. -The ending is worth the emotional investment, I promise. -The romance is good but spice is low compared with ACOTAR because YA
My favourite series so far. There were many times, where I had to take a break only to recover from what I've read. All books were perfect with a lot of gruesome scenes and intrigue. I'm afraid Sarah j. Maas hast ruined me cause every series or book I've read since have not given me the pleasure throne of glass has. This series is everything a demanding reader could wish for (character development, fascinating plot with unexpected turns, deeper meanings etc.). The author deserves a standing ovation.
Where do I start? I just finished reading the whole series (all 8 books), as well as the first 5 that are numbered 0.1, 0.2, ... . Basically, a journey, and I am at a total awe, delight, joy, and impact of the beauty of the writing style, plot, and characters. To me, this is a captivating fantasy at its best, and I keep going back and re-reading bits and pieces here and there.
The main problem for me now is - I have no idea what book(s) would work next, in a similar genre, after this gem of a series.
Wow. Its not "Hunger Games" quality, but it definitely entertains you to the very end. I admit, it had fatigued me of this drama and really Maas didn't need to write five novels to resolve the story, but there was just so much journey she wanted to take you along on. I did love the characters and even read the little prequel novellas, "The Assassin's Blade." I enjoyed listening to all the books, but I was ready for it to end by book five. If you are looking for a middling quality of historical fantasy sci-fi with a female protagonist, this will provide you hours upon hours of entertainment.
I liked book 1 and it was downhill from there. Admittedly, I was under a false impression that it was a 3 book series, and so was thrown at the end of book 3 when the threads were not wrapping up. However, once Aelin went across the ocean the story became so jumbled and distorted that I ended up basically finishing the series just to finish it. I can barely remember most of the books in the intervening years. I was so unimpressed that it took me longer than it might have to open the ACOTAR series by the same author, but I ended up liking those much better.
Favorite series! Aelin is a badass character who knows her power and isn't afraid to do what needs to be done. I love her and Rowan's relationship, there is something so beautiful about everyone else fearing Aelin and her power and him being captivated by it and accepting her as his equal. The supporting characters and side plotlines are as well developed as the main ones and just add to the incredible world-building. I loved it from start to finish.
Entertaining but was hoping for some gay. Overall enjoyed the story and it was a really quick read! I bought the second and third one today and im interested to see where the story goes. Putting 4 stars because I felt the main character was a bit of a self-insert. Everyone wanted her, she was perfect, and nothing she could do could be wrong.

I've just finished reading every single book. i've loved it, my husband is reading it, and I've given it as gifts to others. Her plots never cease to catch me by surprise and it's been a lovely bit of escapism from the everyday world.
My very first fantasy series I'd learnt to love, though it took me 10 months to finish it still I enjoyed the story of Aelin although book 7 seemed boring to me, too much character but all in all its worth the read.
I throughly enjoyed this series, if you enjoy adventure > romance you'd probably enjoy this series though there is still romance its not the main focal point of the story line. If you enjoy romance > adventure I'd recommend A Court of Thrones and Roses by Sarah J Maas.
started good. got better. started getting boring. hot blonde fairy entered. it got good. ending made me want to die and empty inside. I will never forgive Sarah for writing the most BORING final book to every exist.
