'Misery' takes you on a hellish ride meandering through the blood-red cranial cavities of a bone-white skull.

'There, in the exact centre of the cake, like an extra big candle, had been his thumb - his now-grey thumb - with the nail a little rough because he sometimes chewed it when he was thinking.'

The novel starts out with a near-fatal car accident in a rural, secluded area where the author Paul Sheldon finds himself being 'rescued' by former nurse and self-proclaimed number one fan Annie Wilkes in her  house of horror.

Axe-wielding Annie Wilkes is a fascinating character which I describe as devious, deranged, repulsive, cunning, obsessive, sinister and homicidal. Her strong desire for near-absolute power over others' basic necessities and medications strongly reminded me of Nurse Ratched. Annie's keeping Paul from acting out through codeine-based painkillers which he quickly becomes addicted to, caused by his creepy nurse. Annie's using her power over Paul while withholding his pills to threaten and manipulate his actions and upheavals. Paul's well-being is dependent on how he's treating his main character 'Misery Chastain' in his novel series, Annie subjects him to a series of physical and psychological tortures. She's the personification of villainous evil. For Annie, fiction and reality are blurred lines, like the typewriter where words are obscured or letters missing. The book's title, in my opinion, describes both the character of Misery Chastain in a successful series of romance novels and the ordeal Paul's been subjected to - a logical incompatibility.

This is one of my favorite King' novels when it comes to psychological suspense and spectacular cruelty. Misery is graphic to the point where Paul's pain, fear, paranoia, anger, sadness, desperation, determination and relief become the feelings of your own waking existence, like a local anesthetic failing to act properly. This gruesome and suspenseful tale is a fast-paced, fantastic reading experience alongside a madwoman. King's ability to demand his reader's attention is outstanding, hooked up from page one! Highly recommended! 🎃💀🖤📖

Paul Sheldon. He's a bestselling novelist who has finally met his biggest fan. Her name is Annie Wilkes and she is more than a rabid reader - she is Paul's nurse, tending his shattered body after an automobile accident. But she is also his captor, keeping him prisoner in her isolated house.

Stephen's ordinary human villains tend to be the scariest of them all in my opinion. There were no superpowers, no demons, no paranormal entities in this book at all, just a crazy lady with a very bad temper and lots of unhealed mental and emotional baggage.

What makes Annie Wilkes scary is how close to a real abuser she is. Her actions, mentality and emotional reactions are scarily human. She had moments where empathy shined through, I hated her but understood her. I understood her thinking process and what made her go into spirals of insanity. I didn't want to sympathize with her, but she made me feel like I had no choice at times. She was so despicable and helpless that I looked down on her with terrible pity. I hear that's a staple with truly crazy and evil folks. They have a strange way of making you connect with them and try to sympathize with them instead of shunning them as the massive threat that they actually are. Annie has Stockholm syndrome written all over her.

She also displayed typical behaviors and speech patterns of abusers. "I'm doing this for your own good. You made me do this. It's your fault I hurt you." Some of her words and actions hit very close to home. There were times I wanted to reach into the pages and set her straight myself, but through the eyes of Paul I felt so helpless. Congrats to this book for making me scared, angry and guilty for trying to somewhat sympathize and understand an evil person.

My only complaint about the book is that I really didn't enjoy the story segments featuring Paul's Misery stories. They felt boring and out of place with the rest of the book, but they were decent enough to be able to wade through them fairly easily. Doesn't take away from my enjoyment from the really juicy scenes from the rest of the book, but it did feel like needless padding at times.

Misery had a bit of a slow start at first, but once you hit a few chapters, the story kicks off at a fast pace. The story starts with fiction author Paul Sheldon having a bad accident near the town of Sidewinder, Colorado.
YES! It is the same town as The Shining!
He is taken in by a former nurse named Annie who is also is his #1 fan. Annie has read all of Sheldon's books. From here the story turns downward. Annie is insane. She is not helping Paul to recover but is keeping him as her own pet author. The clock is ticking for both Paul and Annie.
I found the way that Annie was painted to be very effective in showing how unpredictable mental illness is. One moment they are fine and the next they can snap.
My favorite part has to be the way Stephen King tied the world of Misery and the world of The Shining together when Annie talked about the Overlook that burned down ten years earlier. I thought their existence is in the same literary universe was super dope. It also makes me think do people from that town specifically really have a mental illness for real.
However, Misery isn't scary in the 'Monsters or Ghost' kind of way, but in a psychological way. Misery was not creepy or scary in the traditional sense but it was one of the most suspenseful books I read from Stephen King. I read many Stephen King novels and Misery is one of my favorite books. Many have seen the movie but the book is darker and Wilkes is more insane than in the movie.
In my point of view, I enjoyed Misery more than Pet Semetary, Stephen King does place you into what it would be like to be trapped by a lunatic in this book.
Overall, it was nice to see Stephen King venture outside the supernatural horror field and deal with real-world horror for a change. It is a must-read for any King's fan or even for the psychological horror genre fan, you should add this to your reading list.

4.5 ⭐️ Well, well, well, that’s 3 out of 3 for me and Stephen King books I’ve read this year that I’ve actually really enjoyed! “Misery” was a very fascinating read because it felt like book “Inception” with it’s book-with-a-book concept where you are reading Paul Sheldon’s horrifying stay with Annie Wilkes as well as his creation of the fictional “Misery’s Return.” There’s also the added element that Paul Sheldon is a famous writer which really makes you wonder how much of Paul’s characterization derives from King himself. Personally, I have a few ideas. Nevertheless, I really enjoyed this story in all of its terrifying glory. Being held captive by Annie Wilkes is a fate worse than death and for much of the book, I didn’t think Paul was going to make it in the end. Speaking of the end, I didn’t really like Annie’s ending. Paul gave it his all to slay the mighty beast and somehow she had enough strength to escape through his window and into the barn before actually dying? It seems a little far fetched, but then again, I’m hoping that people like Annie can only exist in books. Overall, this was an incredibly solid and full-bodied book by King and I think it is enough to say that my love/hate stance that I held for him prior to this novel, has turned into a well-deserved love! Excellent work.

My favourite King so far!
I loved it, what a thrill! I've only read four Stephen King but this one is really the creepiest and scariest, because it is realistic, and you can easily imagine yourself in the shoes the main character and imagine what he is going through.
The character of Annie is amazing, she scared me through the whole book because she is unpredictable and I never knew what to expect from her, some passages were very hard to read.
King makes you hold your breath until the end, I highly recommend it!

Now it’s been a while since I’ve read this book, but what else is there to say besides LOVED IT!! I’m a huge SK fan and have read just about all his books. I always recommend him to anyone who wants a possible book that’s a little out there on some level. While this wasn’t an ‘out there’s book like some of his others it was still a great read and gives thought to something that could really happen to a person, which is creepy and kinda scary.

Absolutely gut wrenching in all it’s gore and suspense. As per usual, the movie doesn’t do the book justice and doesn’t capture the explicit detail that sickens you to the core. Ive often thought about revisiting this book again seeing I read it many years ago, however I don’t think I have the guts to go through all that pain again.

Another Stephen King book I COULD NOT put down! Reader be warned though - VERY graphic descriptions of injuries/pain, so if you’re uneasy about those things I would not recommend this book. Watched the movie after I read the book, and as always, the book is better. However that was one of the best screen adaptations of a book I have seen! A very understandably popular book from King.

Stephen King is obviously a genius
This is one of those books that just creeps under your skin. It makes you question the people around you, their past stories and where their mental state will be down the road. Also makes me wary of Dan girls/boys 😂

I read this in high school and it’s a waste of time. I learned nothing but instead was scarred by the cruelty that can be in the hearts of people. Bleh. Don’t we have enough of that? Let’s be better.
