When Jonas Wagner is paired with high school bully Mitch Mueller for a class project, he only expects the worst. What he didn't expect was to get involved with a government research site, develop superpowers, and weirdest of all…fall in love with this jerk.
It’s been a hot minute since I’ve read a webcomic and enjoyed it this much, but the moment I heard about this bully x nerd high school romance, featuring two teens who get exposed to radiation during a school project and discover they now have superpowers… well, I just had to see what this was like!
Needless to say, I devoured the entire twelve chapters in an evening, which equates to almost 5 years-worth of this fun, engaging and very queer webcomic.
Not usually one for a bully romance—I have BIG ISSUES with this concept in general—I still found the premise intriguing enough to give it a whirl anyway. The early chapters/parts were dubious for me, simply because nerd Jonas is pretty damn scared of past bully Mitch, when Mitch returns to their school after years away in juvie. I didn’t like Jonas’s stress-response, and even though we never really get to see the depths of the original bullying, it still felt palpable that Jonas would be apprehensive of this guy.
This is where the talent of this artist and author comes in, because these two are quickly paired on a school project, and from that moment onwards Jonas and the reader begin to see a whole other side to brutish, uncouth Mitch—a side that seems surprisingly protective and fond of Jonas.
Their relationship transition had a really nice progression to it. The apprehensive and doubt was there, as expected from Jonas’s side of things, but when they’re exposed to something that gives them powers, they bond hard and fast, leaning on each other for support and comradery during an experience that is unexpected and wholly new to both of them.
The plot had a good arc that felt both propulsive (in terms of growing excitement) and natural (in terms of the deeper feelings Jonas and Mitch develop for each other). I especially appreciated that Mitch didn’t magically become this flawless hero and that instead he grew and learnt from his mistakes. He was still quick to anger and unpredictable, but his adoration of Jonas and his new abilities forced on him a new, improved sense of responsibility that was nice to see.
I also appreciated that the relevant chapters had trigger warnings ahead of them, so I knew what I was headed into. This is particularly helpful for readers who like to know the warnings in advance, especially if they’re triggered by specific issues or themes, to which there were a few heavy ones included here.
Overall, this was an extremely enjoyable comic to read. I loved Jonas and Mitch together and enjoyed their journey to love and self-acceptance, with the added bonus of superpowers! I’ll be bookmarking this on Tapas and I have no doubt I’ll be rereading this in the future.
Note: This review is for the entire completed works and not simply Long Exposure #1, but I’ve decided to rate the rest anyway for prosperity on my GR shelves.
I have rated each of the parts to this comic since the Long Exposure (Webcomic) book was removed from here. Previously, I rated that comic on Goodreads every time I read it. Although I've rated each part of the web comic series, I'll be putting my review on this one. Here it is:
[First Read]: 2021, July 31 to August 1 Oh my gosh! Eeeek, okay I totally 100% loved that series. It was so cute and fun and sweet!! 5/5!!!!! Note to self: READ THIS AGAIN NEXT YEAR
[Second Read]: 2022, June 24-25 EEEEEEEEEEEH I'm kicking and screaming like a literal child. I love this comic so much.
[Third read]: 2023, July 3-4 I fuckin love this comic.
[Fourth read]: 2024, June 28-29 My love for this comic will never die.
Over the years, my love for this book/comic has only grown. It is likely one of the only books I will ever tolerate with the bully/romance trope. Thank you Kam Heyward (Mars) for creating this masterpiece.
My copy of the physical volume arrived yesterday and I've never been happier. I've read the webcomic multiple times over before and after taking part in the Kickstarter, but I'm looking forward to being able to read the whole series in physical form and display them on my shelves.
The pacing can be a little fast or slow at times but that's easy to overlook due to the wonderful art and endearing characters (Yes, even Mitch). It's an easy but emotive read with a simple but solid plot and characters you can really root for.
It does focus on a BullyxNerd trope which I usually dislike heavily but the way it is expanded on and explained through both perspectives did change my feelings about this specific case, although, not about the trope as a whole.
There are a few sensitive subjects discussed within the story, so check trigger warnings if you need to.

The story itself is okay so far, but I'm not a fan of the whole 'bully-to-lover' thing that's eventually going to happen. This guy had such an effect on Jonas that he had to flee the room when he entered. A nope from me.
I almost never read graphic novels so when It comes to the rating I have nothing to compare this against. But I enjoyed it! The full pages in color were an effective and nice touch, it had a good pace, I liked how the undramatic take on the nerd/bully trope. But the story was a classic one without to many twists or new ideas, a bit forgettable and I get this is very subjective but overall the style of the artist wasn't my favorite. I liked it, but did I like it enough to read the sequals? Ehh.... don't know. Maybe if I'm bored!
Long exposure by mars 9/10 technically I read all of these and on tapas so idk how it’s different from the books but: it was good but the webcomic format meant that there were some very abrupt scene changes and I would’ve liked more transition pages but the art style was SO GOOD and I really love scratch as a character she should get more screen time. Also the romance was very much fanservice BUT THE ART IS SO PRETTY ughhhhhh. I def would’ve preferred more tender moments than just like. horny. But that’s just my taste
AMAZING OMG I love the whole vibe of this comic it’s cosy and a perfect read for autumn. I’ve read it 30+ and it really is one of my fav comics ever!! The author makes it so easy for you to fall in love with their characters. And just wow I love everything about this! Oh and I think the “fantasy/supernatural” aspect was done brilliantly and in a realistic way. I love how the time period is sort of unknown(?) like what I mean is it feels very timeless.
It’s everything I love, the vibes are almost like, “the Xfiles” meets “stranger things” meets “I am so not okay with this”.
Poderes y gobierno, apoyo apoyo.
Good characterisation and pacing, and sets you up with enough interest to want to keep going. I also really really love the art style. It's so fun and has such a physically diverse cast as well. Very excited to see how this story progresses.
Technically this is a review of the first five chapters and the extra content in the first kickstarter volume. Really annoyed I can’t add that volume on here, and the fact this entire series isn’t under the authors preferred name, Mars Heyward. It’s why I prefer storygraph 🤷🏻♀️
