Noriaki Kubo, known professionally as Tite Kubo ( 久保帯人), is a Japanese manga artist and character designer. His manga series Bleach (2001–2016) had over 130 million copies in circulation as of 2022.
Such an amazing volume! Grimmjow is definitely my favorite Espada right now. Ichigo and Grimmjow had an amazing fight and we also got to see Grimmjow’s past and how he came to be. Now a new enemy has shown up to fight Ichigo. Hopefully Ichigo finds a way to beat him.
"Kurosaki. You said you came here to save that witch? Well, I've got news for you, boy. You're wrong. You came here to fight. You know I'm right! Your fighting instincts brought you here! You're a Soul Reaper and I'm a Hollow. We have to fight to the death. It's been that way for a thousand of years!"
I've expected that Volume 32 will include the Ichigo vs Grimmjow fight. What I did not expect was that it will focus on that only. Most of Ichigo's friends were beaten already, that's true, but Renji's and Ishida's fight against Szayelaporro hadn't finished yet. I thought that I will see at least some scenes of that fight, but nah. It's not that I'm complaining. The Ichigo vs Grimmjow fights were always one of my favorites, while the Szayelaporro one never was, so Volume 32 was a very positive surprise for me.
I really love the way the Ichigo vs Grimmjow fight is portrayed in the anime, but in the manga it looks even more impressive. I always knew that Tite Kubo is a genius when it comes to art, and he proves it more and more with every volume. It's a raw fight, not shying away from all the bloody details and incredibly impressive images, but it's also a fight full of emotions. Both sides are strong and both have their reasons to fight. Grimmjow was obsessed with Ichigo from the moment he encountered him for the first time and had the need to fight him again had pulled him forward all this time. Besides, he's a Hollow - like a wild animal - and the need to fight and prove his strength seem to be carved into his DNA. And Ichigo, who came to Hueco Mundo with a specific purpose, is doing his best to, well, please Grimmjow. He knows how important this fight is for his opponent, but at the same time, he doesn't want to fight, not really. He does it, because he needs to, knowing how dangerous Grimmjow can be and trying to keep him away from Nel and Orihime.
While Grimmjow is giving his all to the fight, it's obvious that Ichigo isn't into it like he should be. Grimmjow knows how powerful Ichigo truly is and realizes pretty quickly what's the reason that holds him back. So he does the only logical thing.
He attacks Orihime and Nel to trigger Ichigo into wearing the Hollow's mask. He succeeds, but Ichigo's still not serious in the battle. One way or another, the girl still holds him back.
And this is how we came to the reason why I'm not giving Volume 32 the five stars it truly deserves. Because of Orihime Inoue.
"Ichigo... Ichigo..." "Don't worry. Ichigo's going to win." "H... How do you know that?" "Because he said he would." "That's easy to say! But Ichigo's scared! Scared people always talk big!" "Not Ichigo. He wouldn't do that. If he says he'll win, he means it. Ichigo is a good guy. When he says something like that, it's a promise. And I think... he made this promise to himself. By saying it out loud, he's solidifying his resolve. So don't worry. If Ichigo says he'll win, he'll win."
Remember how I praised Orihime in the previous volume, despite my obvious dislike for her? Remember how I said that she will definitely piss me off again? Well, she pissed me off again as I said she will.
First she comforts a tearful Nel by saying how of a good guy Ichigo is and that there is no reason to worry for him. That's a good thing, it's exactly who Ichigo is and that's exactly what she, as his longtime friend, should say. But then she does something totally opposite.
"Ichigo? Is that... really Ichigo?" "I can't be afraid. But when I think of those eyes... I feel like Ichigo is turning into someone I don't know."
Huh? I mean, WHAT?? The moment Ichigo puts his Hollow mask on, she's suddenly frozen with a terrified face expression. I would've understand it if she had never seen Ichigo with that mask on (she had so see him when she came to the Vizards' lair when Ichigo trained there, c'mon) and if she didn't know Ichigo for long. But she does know him, pretty well (or so, she says), and despite that she acts all fearful and frozen? Really? REALLY?? I would understand her behaviour if Ichigo, while being in his Hollow mode, tried to attack her, at least once. BUT HE NEVER DID. All he did was protecting her, over and over again, and looking at her with such sad eyes, because he knew, HE KNEW that she fears him and there is nothing he can do about it. He does not deserve a treatment like this! All he did was for her. He even died while fighting for her, c'mon! And this is how she reacts?? It pissed me off in the anime and it keeps on pissing me of in the manga. I had a very small hope that this scene is not here, but, I was (sadly) wrong. The only thing that is different between the anime and the manga is the fact that in the anime Orihime gets a flashback of her brother's Hollow form while in the manga it never happens.
"Ichigo is just a human being! He didn't become a Soul Reaper and put on that mask 'cause he wanted to! Now he's obviously in pain! He's fighting for you! He's using that power and fighting and bleeding for you!
SAY IT LOUDER, NEL!! It's truly amazing how Nel, an Arrancar child who knows Ichigo only for a couple of hours, seems to know him better than Orihime, who's his longtime friend. Nel's the one who truly worried for Ichigo's wellbeing and safety. She's the one who cried when he was beaten up, while Orihime's just... stood there. Nel's right in every thing she had said. I know that Orihime did snap out of her funk and (finally) cheered for Ichigo, but for me, it was too late. She should've stood by his side no matter what. And he's the love of her life. *laugh through tears*
Honestly, if Orihime wasn't there or if she behaved like she should've, Ichigo would have been on his full power from the very start of the fight. She held him back, because he worried about her reaction to his Hollow mode (and she proved him right, sadly). I wish I could see this fight without Orihime being present. That would've been something truly amazing to witness.
Anyways, I'm jumping into the next volume right away. We finished volume 32 with the appearance of another Espada member - the one that will definitely not hold back in his efforts to kill Ichigo. His appearance also means that certain flashbacks scenes are coming and I'm so excited!! (or maybe they will show the Szayelaporro fight instead... well)
Some of my thoughts while reading:
~ I did NOT expect to see the images of half-naked Ichigo and Grimmjow, O MY GOSH 🫣 ~ The fact that Ichigo apologized for scaring Orihime... My boy, please, you did nothing wrong 😔 ~ Ichigo had to tell Orihime to put on a shield in front of her and Nel like the girl didn't realize that she's standing close to a battlefield. This is what I mean when I say that most of the time the girl does nothing except waiting for orders 😩 ~ I HAD NO IDEA HOW BEAUTIFUL MILA ROSE IS! I was always in awe of Halibel, but Mila Rose totally beats her in looks! ~ I had only now realized that the Hollows that Grimmjow had met in his flashback scenes are his Fracciones! ~ Ichigo's sorrowful face expression after he saw Grimmjow standing up to fight again... And that he threw away his sword (!). He never wanted to fight him 😔 ~ I was incredibly surprised to see the Bleach: Untold Stories chapter with Hitsugaya! It was portrayed in the anime, sure, but as a freaking filler episode, so I was convinced that it never happened! Part of me is happy that I was wrong (because we get to see a little of Hitsugaya's past), but other part of me is sad that Hitsugaya had to get through so much as a kid 😢
I reached my favorite fight in the whole Arrancar arc. Grimmjow is literally one of the best Bleach villains ever. He really pushes Ichigo. He helps cause Ichigo to grow in this series I feel. Every fight that Ichigo has shapes him. He becomes stronger also because of the people that love him.
Orihime was actually afraid of seeing Ichigo with his hollow mask. I don't blame her. Her brother also did attack her as a hollow as well. When she saw Ichigo's eyes, they were like her brother's. They were cold and unfeeling. Hollows don't feel anything. They don't know what emotions are. They only know how to consume. Orihime really doesn't want Ichigo to become something like that.
Nel also had to reason with Orihime. She told her that she needs to cheer Ichigo on instead of being afraid of him. Nel is right though. Ichigo is still Ichigo even with the mask. Nel is one of my favorite characters in this series as well.
"I'll defeat you, Grimmjow, and Ulquiorra, and Aizen!! Rukia! Chad! Uryu, Renji, and Orihime. I'm taking them all back with me!! I can't...lose to you...Grimmjow!"
I love that line. I love it even more so in the anime. This volume is literally such a rush. I'm also excited for the next volume. I know what's coming and I can't wait to see it.

Great volume and its mostly the fight between Ichigo and Grimmjow and its epic and brutal and bloody and high stakes emotions, we find about the backstory of Grimmjow and why he is that way and then their battle has so much twist ad turns, Ichigo switching with his hollow mode and even G is able to have 2-3 forms and then when he rescues Orihime its something and then comes their next threat: NNOITARA! Its a great volume and like upends this battle!
I loved this volume, we're back to the main fights (because yes, when everyone but Ichigo or the captains fight, I'm not always a fan ^^;) and this one spanned the entire volume. When the fight is finished, there is a super sweet moment. Nel is proving to be even more adorable. And I can't hate Grimmjow really.
The side story at the end, about how Hitsugaya ended up a shinigami (or at least, the start of that story) was also wonderful. I only remembered that partly and I hope it will continue at the end of the next volume.
Grimjow is perhaps my favourite villain in the entirety of Bleach. His backstory was covered in this issue and i really like it, I feel like it's so easy to relate ( at least for me) to how he feels and why he wants to fight Ichigo so much. That aside he looks undeniably awesome and his powers ( panther king) are incredibly cool. His fight with Ichigo took up the entirety of this issue and I think it's a great fight, ichigo definitely has his moments too but this volume definitely felt like Grimjows. Shame their fight is done and we're now moving past him.
Bleach, Vol. 32 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next eight chapters (279–286) of the on-going manga series with a bonus chapter: "Dying in the Ice Fields".
Orihime Inoue finishes healing Ichigo Kurosaki and he begins to fight Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez. Even after using his Bankai, Ichigo finds himself outmatched against Grimmjow. However, Ichigo dons his hollow mask, which he can now use for longer stints as Grimmjow responds by releases his zanpakutō, their fight observed by the Espada Tier Halibel and her three Fracciones.
Though Ichigo is slowly worn down by Grimmjow, Orihime musters the courage to cheer for him and he manages to deal a blow across Grimmjow's chest. Grimmjow, despite being wounded, refuses to give up as he uses his strongest attack on Ichigo. However, Ichigo overcomes it and deals a final blow, leaving Grimmjow on the ground while preparing to take Orihime away from Las Noches. However, Grimmjow refuses to end the fight there before he is suddenly attacked by Nnoitra Gilga.
This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Tite Kubo. The entire tankōbon covers the fight between Ichigo Kurosaki and Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez, who has a personal beef with each other. It was a well drawn and paced fight with addition twist with power-ups for each fighter. Additionally, the bonus chapter is focused on Tōshirō Hitsugaya's backstory, showing how he discovered his Soul Reaper powers and met Rangiku Matsumoto, his future lieutenant.
All in all, Bleach, Vol. 32 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems intriguing and I cannot wait to read more.
An entire story arc focused on a long-awaited battle between Grimmjow and Ichigo Kurosaki. Naturally epic, perfectly stretched out, with some flashback sequences to give the rival an origin story.
The volume ends on a cliffhanger as another foe makes his entrance.
It should be noted that there really never seems to be any limit to Ichigo Kurosaki's willpower and how much pain he can endure. It's like everyone's stamina refills at abnormal speeds, but hey, it makes for some exciting battles!
The artwork really shines in this volume as we focus on a singular fight between Grimmjow and Ichigo. I loved the framing and the fight choreography, and this fights was perfectly paced while it explored the two central focus characters. I normally am not a huge fan of anime storylines between two male rivals fighting each other to prove who is the strongest, but something about Ichigo and Grimmjow’s rivalry intrigues me more than most characters in similar positions. I think it’s because of Ichigo’s almost simple motivation of protecting his loved ones after knowing the loss of his own mother, and how that contrasts with Grimmjow’s “fight to survive/survival of the fittest” lifestyle being called into question by Ichigo’s mere existence. I loved the flashback to Grimmjow’s past and the explanation of the hierarchy of power among Hollows. The cannibalistic nature of Hollows and their fear of regression into more primitive beings is an interesting look into their dark world and brutal ecosystem. I loved the ending of the fight and how it gets cut off by another Espada. This volume segues nicely into the next fight and storyline and I liked how it even featured a small prequel story featuring Tōshirō before he became a Soul Reaper and Captain.
Ichigo and Grimmjow go face to face with all their powers. It's pretty much just an entire fighting volume. It's not bad, some cool moves, and watching Ichigo do a finishing move was great. Getting a bit of background on Grimmjow was also interesting. But it ends how you'd expect, some new baddie comes along, and now we must face them. It gets a little exhausting hitting the same exact beats.
I believe this could be one of my favorite volumes so far. Can I just say how much I love Grimmjow?? This guy is just such an awesome villain, I can't get enough. Basically, this volume is completely filled with the battle between Grimmjow and Ichigo. At the very end of the volume, we have a new villain for Ichigo to battle, but that is it. Such a good volume because it explains some of Grimmjow's past and gives us some insight to his insanity! I need more!
There is a bonus chapter on my favorite Soul Reaper: Tôshirô. It just goes into more of his history and how he became a Soul Reaper. I love his grumpiness! Man, this volume was good- full of my favorite characters!

GREAT battle!!! Grimmjow Vs. Ichigo is was a long waited one... Ichigo get to extened his Hollow state for more than 11 seconds maybe Orihimi had a hand in that not in her healing power but just by being their watching all of that from a far kinnda fearing and rooting him :p The ending was awesome both for the battle and for the back story of Toshiro :)
Seems like this is the conclusion of the Ichigo vs Grimmjow fight (for now). Has some great back story for Grimmjow, a lot of awesome action scenes, and I love Grimm's panther king state. The extra story at the end (meant as a teaser for the DiamondDust Rebellion film) is pretty good too.
Bleach is a decent one for practicing the 日本語 because it's a bit more sparse, dialogue wise, in this part of the story, which becomes much more action oriented. Probably a bit of a trivial read in English but quite a decent challenge for my low Japanese level!
Summary: Ichego starts fighting Grimmjow. They both transform, Ichego hollowfies, and Grimmjow bonds with his sword. Ichego defeats Grimmjow but he wont stay down unless he is killed. He goes to attach Ichego and another arrancar knocks him down
Given that Manga, and especially Shonen is split up into bigger arcs as composed to volumes I will be analyzing and reviewing this by Arc. I also reread this manga over the span of 2 months, some days reading as much as 100 chapters a day. It would be quite tedious for me to review each 7-8 chapter volume. So this will be copy and pasted throughout all of the 72 manga volumes. That being said, if you're looking at this without having viewed the series...spoiler warning. I don't recap anything, but I also mention things that happen. If you want me to answer the question "Should I pick this up?" Yes. Even if you stop at the end of the Soul Society Arc. It's worth it.
Karakura Town Arc - Chapters 1-56- Rating: 7/10 (The official page lumps this in with the Soul Society Arc however I feel as if they are two very separate arcs with two very separate themes) - A fun introduction. -An interesting premise on the idea of ghosts and demons (Hollows) -Does a good job of introducing the characters and I especially enjoyed the love for characters like Chad, Orihime and Uryu as these characters would later lose more and more spotlight as the series went on. -It is a bit of a monster of the week. When it works, like with Chad's introduction story. It works. But Characters like Don Kanonji felt superficial and very gimmicky. Which, fair. I didn't enjoy them as much.
Soul Society Arc - Chapters 57-182 - Rating: 10/10 -The height of Bleach -Establishes an afterlife seemingly perfectly. Later on revealed to be full of plot holes and never fleshed out but hey! That's not an issue in THIS arc. The fights are top tier, the themes of Ichigo owing a life debt to Rukia and his passion and determination to rise above literally God's army is inspiring and to this day is why I love Ichigo so much. He doesn't have some grandiose plan. He doesn't have a major goal to accomplish. He is a protector by heart, losing his mother has made him sour to failing to protect those he cares about and he'll do anything in his power never to feel that helpless again. Very powerful stuff. -The twist near the end of this arc is revolutionary and would make waves for the next 200 chapters onward. A perfect ending and set up for the forthcoming arc. -The only issues I have for this arc would be Ichigo's lightning speed progression. The guy goes from being able to barely defeat a third seat to besting multiple captains in roughly 100 or less chapters. I get that that is the point and him defeating captains was more of a struck of luck, but progression and pacing wise it feels very unearned and a factor of "for the plot he needed to be this strong" It only seems as fast as it is because Ichigo's progression slows drastically down for the rest of the story moving foreword so it's only now that I make that criticism. -Also, and this will be an issue in most Shonen. There are 13 Captains with 13 Vice Captains and seats that branch all the way to 10 I believe? Regardless, there's a fudge ton of characters that are introduced here and it can get a little jarring at times. Luckily, Kubo does a great job at making their designs and characters unique despite such a large cast.
Hueco Mundo Arc - Chapters 183-423 - Rating 7/10 -This is another arc where personally I would split it up into two separate arcs. But for the sake of this review I will simply refer to the first half of the arc and the later half of the arc. First Half 9/10. Second Half. 5/10. -The first half of this arc is a great continuation of the last. Ichigo now struggles with his inner demons and it affects his ability to protect the ones he loves. We are also introduced to a deadly unknown new villains. The Arrancars/Espada to this day remain one of my favorite villain factions in all of manga enemies. -Just so you're aware I would say the first half of this arc ends right around the point of Ichigo vs Grimmjow. Grimmjow is one of the first Arrancar that Ichigo faces. And he's also one of two Espada that he faces three times. The conclusion of that fight shows Ichigo conquering his inner demons. Where Grimmjow is very much fighting to establish himself. Grimmjow has to fight Ichigo to prove to his fallen comrades that he is as good as he says he is. He doesn't care about Aizen, he doesn't care about the rest of the Espada. It is very personal for him. For Ichigo, Orohime is within his grasp of saving and he views this as his "final" battle. It's my favorite fight in all of Bleach. -However, this is where things start to take a bit of dip in quality in my opinion. We had a goal and we were striving towards that goal. Each character of the original cast coming to repay the debt they made to their friend who had risked her life to save them in the Soul society arc. But somewhere along the way it seems we just had a fighter fest. Captains would face enemies with no themes or character revelations. The Espadas got a little light but nothing that made their fights compelling. You almost just feel bad for the Espada as they were monsters turned into a military force by an unstoppable tyrant. But even that wasn't enough to make half of the fights interesting. Now, that's with knowing the outcome. These fights played little importance in the larger scheme of things. Where at least in the Hueco Mundo fights each match up had the protagonists striving for a goal. Rukia to defeat Aaroneiro to free her former superiors soul. Byakuya to defend Rukia. Renji and Uryu teamwork. Nel to protect Ichigo and get revenge on Nnoitra. Whereas Stark fought Kyoraku.....cause.....and Hitsugaya fought Halibel because Water vs Ice would be cool. -This leaves me to the end. I won't say it wasn't satisfying that Ichigo was able to defeat Aizen. And yes, I do feel like his new power was earned. 3 months of training. But this was clearly a last minute decision to save Aizen for a later date and the show must go on. I do feel like it wasn't as satisfying as 200+ chapter buildup needed to be.
The Fullbring Arc - Chapters 424-479 - Rating: 8/10 -A very underrated arc. And yes, I acknowledge that rating wise I think the Fullbring arc is superior to the Hueco Mundo arc. That is mostly true. Though I like the first half of the Hueco Mundo Arc more than the Fullbring arc. The end of the HM arc really brought it down for me. The Fullbring Arc is much more concise and is actually the shortest arc in the series and works as a glorified Ichigo getting his powers back arc. But that doesn't mean its bad. -When I read it originally back when it was coming out in 2010. (Cause I'm Old) It wasn't phenomenal. In fact, I hated it. But wouldn't you? It took just short of a year to get to the point that we were at. But upon rereading it, it gave much deserved love to the characters who hadn't been shown love in quite some time. The original cast. It was a very character focused arc. Ichigo never seemed more human. And despite me hating it before for taking so long, reading weekly can sometimes hurt these mystery based arcs. The twist is heavily foreshadowed and I really appreciated it. -That being said, the end was super rushed. This was a big bummer for me. The villains this time around were humans. And the ones who had the most exposure and relations with these characters were the original cast who again....were humans. So to have the soul reapers, who have no connection to the fullbringers show up and basically no diff most of the fullbringers felt very forced and fanservicey to me. This very well could have not been Kubo's call. As the community was very vocal about their dislike for this arc as it was going on. But I appreciate it now much more as I appreciate character and story over big sword fights. Lol.
The Thousand Year Blood War Arc - Chapters 424-689 - Rating: 5/10 -And we're finally here. The final and largest arc within the Bleach story. And man...does it not stick the landing. -That being said, this arc has phenomenal moments. Kenpachi's Shikai and Bankai. Ichigo's double swords. Renji's true Bankai. Rukia's Bankai. And many more. However, they are put together against the most break neck speed arc that I have ever read. Kubo was very ambitious when he introduced 26 new villains. However, most of them got barely any screen time and a lot of them even got off screened by higher level captains. This was unlike the Espada who each got a full double page spread for their Resurrections. -Yhwach himself was a phenomenal villain but was dealt with swiftly and imo dirty. They did him dirty. -There was just something off. The mood changed and it was very apparent. The villains had random powers instead of the powers reflecting their personalities or needs. The finale felt so underwhelming. -Ichigo gets to be the strongest he's ever been....but he doesn't defeat a single person besides the main villain despite being in several fights. -It isn't a good arc. In fact, I would say it's the worst. Hopefully the anime does a better job with this already mammoth of a story. 260 chapters is no joke.
This gives the story of Bleach an Overall rating of 7.4/10. Which to me is above average. It has it's ups and downs. It's not perfect. But when it's high, it's peak shonen. But when it's low, it's very forgettable.
4/5 (Review is for the series as a whole and does not contain spoilers)
Ichigo Kurosaki is a high school student who can see ghosts. When an evil spirit, called a hollow, attacks his family, he meets Rukia, a soul reaper tasked with fighting against hollows. But when Rukia is injured, Ichigo must make the decision to take over the role of soul reaper to help fight against hollows to save his hometown.
Bleach is a classic manga and one of the more popular options for those starting out in the genre/format. It features themes of friendship, growing up and changing, and never giving up. One of the most enjoyable elements of this series is watching the progression as the characters learn and evolve. Ichigo has a tendency to be really cocky, especially at the start of the series, but as time goes on and he learns more about the world he’s in, he changes and becomes more willing to listen to the advice given to him by other characters. His friends also continue to grow and progress along with him. Additionally, there is a change in the art style of the characters as the story progresses, which makes it easy to see how they have changed as they all get older. There were two elements about this series that I disliked. The first was that I felt the ending was a bit rushed, and there were some things that I was a bit confused about. However, I recognize that the author was sick and so that attributed to the way things ended. The other element that I disliked was the sheer number of characters in the series by the end. Many of the characters that I thought were dead or gone ended up coming back, and I had to try and remember who they all were. I definitely think I needed to make myself a character sheet with information about each character to help me remember everyone in the end. In terms of assessing age appropriateness for this series, I would say that it’s an okay series for middle school and up. A couple of considerations to keep in mind when deciding if it’s right for you: 1. There is some violence (which is common for shonen mangas), including some elements of body horror, but it’s not too bad. 2. There is no sexual content, although many of the women are drawn disproportionately (which is common in manga written by men). 3. The main character is fifteen years old at the start of the series and only gets older as it progresses. And 4. The themes are a bit mature in that they require some deeper level thinking in order to fully understand them all. Overall, I enjoyed this series for its interesting premise, and would definitely recommend it to those who enjoy the traditional shonen manga.
