"I mean," Kelly went on, "who the fuck are we? Did you ever think about that? Who the fuck are we?"
Exactly how Silette got off the straight and narrow road of mediocrity and began to look for the truth is not known now and maybe never was, even to him. Was the path there already? Did Silette discover it, or only define it? How did he come to find himself in uncharted territory, and end up on the long lost highway toward truth?
"There are no facts," Silette wrote, only pebbles that may or may not be part of this path toward truth."
Sometimes the solution is to rebuild your house. Sometimes, it's to set your house on fire.
I am not my results. I am my process.
"Fortunately, I don't owe anyone anything," I said in the café, trying to sound clever, hoping to sound tough.
Constance raised an eyebrow. "You owe everyone the truth," she corrected me.
Everyone dies. And everyone is always surprised when it happens. I couldn't understand it. It isn't a secret. It's not like no one ever told them.
"Yes," Ann said. "Probably. That's what it means to be a person. It means you make horrible decisions, and you fuck everything up. It means you love people and they leave. It means sometimes no one loves you at all. That's the state of like 90 percent of humanity at any given moment."
Sometimes the past comes up on us like a ghost. Sometimes life is like a haunted house. But there's no way to leave. You just have to make your peace with the ghosts.
The question is never: Who did it? There's always one question, and one question only: Who are you, and why are you here.
