Another perfect example of “just because you can do something, doesn’t mean you should do something.” Doc Savage really deserved better. This is by Bill Mantlo and Ron Wilson. While I was thrilled when it first came out, it didn’t live up to the potential I’d filled it with. I’ve been a fan of Doc Savage for a couple years at that point, disappointed with the film that was released in 1975, but I did enjoy the black and white magazine that Marvel had been producing (see Showcase Presents: Doc Savage, Vol. 1). As for this story, it was great fun to see Ben Grimm and Johnny Storm meet Doc Savage, Monk and Renny. But it just wasn’t enough.

As Marvel doesn’t have the rights to publish Doc Savage any longer, this issue is not included in either Essential Marvel Two-in-One, Vol. 1 or Marvel Two-In-One Epic Collection, Vol. 2: Two Against Hydra where it belongs chronically (although it does appear to have been included in Marvel Masterworks: Marvel Two-in-One, Vol. 3). Thus making this particular issue especially valuable for collectors.

Most of the time I don't review a single issue. But in this case.... there isn't much choice. The issue isn't in the Marvel Two-In-One Essentials and probably can't be. There are a lot of legal issues and debate on whether or not Doc Savage's copyright was ever renewed. Most publisher's even ones own by Disney don't want to take the risk and just left it alone- at least until 2043.

Which is a shame because this issue is GREAT. It starts off as a split story-- as two very similar scenarios play out in the 70s with Ben and Johnny and in the 30s with Doc Savage and company. As things play out you realize they are working on the same case about 40 years apart. It is only by about the 2/3 point that they actually meet and things just go nuts. It is almost a shame Marvel didn't hold the Doc Savage license longer because the two orange guys made an interesting team.
