Anne Picture Book

Goodnight, Anne

Rate this book
A beautiful bedtime picture book based on the best-selling Anne of Green Gables, introducing the irrepressible and beloved Anne to younger readers. It's time for Anne to go to bed, but not before she wishes goodnight to everyone and everything she loves!

Under the watchful eye of her adoptive mother Marilla, Anne has come to cherish life at Green Gables -- the dearest, loveliest spot in the world, and her true home. Every night before she goes to bed, she thinks of all the people and places she loves: her family, her bosom friend Diana, her splendid teacher Miss Stacy, beloved tree Snow Queen, the Lake of Shining Waters and the brilliant sky above. Anne even wishes goodnight -- or good riddance! -- to pesky classmate Gilbert and nosy neighbor Mrs. Lynde. And through it all, Anne's imagination takes flight on a whimsical journey through Avonlea.

This sweet and heartfelt picture book is a perfect read-aloud introduction to L.M. Montgomery's beloved Anne and will delight her brand-new fans and lifelong readers alike.

How is it I am suddenly into Anne of Green Gables?! This is the reason:

https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

which I loved for its energy and capturing the spirit of Anne. Montgomery experts such as Manybooks can tell you its failings, but I for one, not an expert, loved it. So now there seems to be a flurry of picture books celebrating L. M. Montgomery and her Anne.

And Kallie George tries this angle for young readers, to give you images from the books and has Genevieve Godbout illustrate them. But there is no story here; the appeal wouldn't be to young kids who hadn't already read of Anne; it might be to those who have already read and love Montgomery's work (and Manybooks, to your complaint about credit in the above book by Marsden: Montgomery's name does not appear on the book. I saw it on the dust jacket, so I guess that counts for something, but. . .).

Godbout's illustrations are perfectly lovely, and a lover of Anne of Green Gables such as she and George (and now me) are might like to have this book. It is, as George says, "inspired by" it, so that's fair, she doesn't claim it is a story, but for general readers, it oughtta be a story.

Sweet and certainly in a lively yet gentle manner depicting Anne Shirley saying her daily goodnights to Green Gables and what she loves about Green Gables, Avonlea, her adopted family, her friends and neighbours (with of course, Gilbert Blythe being considered not likeable and still rather if not even completely the opposite), Kallie George's Goodnight, Anne nevertheless does feel (art least to and for me) more than a trifle artificial and contrived in nature. And furthermore, since there is not really all that much if any of an actual storyline presented, personally, I do tend to believe that Goodnight, Anne will likely appeal more to individuals, to readers already at least somewhat familiar with Anne of Green Gables as a novel (and since most of us already familiar with Anne of Green Gables as a novel are over and above and often years and years over and above the picture book crowd age, I do have to wonder if younger children would necessarily find Goodnight, Anne all that engaging and inspiring, would find it a fun and delightful bedtime type of story).

However and that all having been said, I have definitely found Goodnight, Anne personally quite enjoyable and gently fun (with Geneviève Godbout's accompanying illustrations providing an aesthetically caressing and lively accompaniment to Kallie George's presented text). And indeed, if Kallie George had for one restricted herself to ONLY presenting those Anne of Green Gables episodes (and scenarios) which occur when Anne Shirley first arrives at Green Gables and had not also added allusions to the dress with puffed sleeves and Anne's teacher Miss Stacy (as Genevieve's Godbout's accompanying visuals clearly show Anne Shirley as avery young girl and both the puffed sleeves dress and Miss Stacy most definitely occur in Anne of Green Gables when Anne is considerably older and had been at Green Gables for a couple of years already) and if for two, the author had actually mentioned L.M. Montgomery by name and not just claimed that Goodnight, Anne is inspired by Anne of Green Gables, I would very likely have given a high four star ranking for Goodnight, Anne, but as it stands, a low three stars is all that I for one am willing to consider (and even then, I honestly think I am being rather majorly generous here, as especially the fact that Kallie George feels that it is somehow not necessary to pay homage to the original author, to L.M. Montgomery herself within the pages of Goodnight Anne, this really does rather massively bother and frustrate me to no end, and is one of the main reasons that I will NOT be recommending Goodnight, Anne to my Goodreads friends).

I wasn't sure if I was going to like this one. The cover looked adorable, but I'm a bit wary of books that attempt to retell classic novels (especially when those books aren't that old to begin with). But Goodnight, Anne is less of a retelling and more of an introduction to the character, making her accessible to children who might still be a bit young for Anne of Green Gables.

In this book, Anne says goodnight to all the people, things, and places she loves (including Gilbert, though she says she can never forgive him for calling her Carrots). It's a nice introduction to all of these things that are mentioned in the novel: her bosom friend, Diana; her teacher, Miss Stacy; the Lake of Shining Waters; the tree she's named Snow Queen; and even her potted geranium, Bonny. It's sweet and simple, and a perfect reflection of the character fans of the book have cherished for decades.

The illustrations are quite pretty. They're not exactly realistic, but the clear facial expressions on the characters provide just the right amount of life to the pictures. The gentle colour palette would make it a nice book to look at while winding down before bed.

For those who are old enough to read the novel, I would recommend doing that. But for younger children--or even older readers who simply enjoy beautiful illustrations--I would recommend Goodnight, Anne.

Quotable moment:

In a lovely bedtime story similar to the classic Goodnight Moon, this tale inspired by Anne of Green Gables follows Anne's routine with Marilla of saying goodnight to everyone she loves before bedtime. Classic characters like Matthew, Gilbert, and even nosy Mrs. Lynde are mentioned and of course the special places of Green Gables, Avonlea, and the Island. The beautiful illustrations are a lovely addition to this charming story that will capture the hearts of everyone who grew up with "Anne with an e" and introduce her to a new generation of readers!

I absolutely loved this book. It is a perfect bedtime story featuring that beloved red-head, Anne Shirley. Anne tells Marilla that she can not go to sleep until she says goodnight to all the things she loves. As she says goodnight, she gives a peak into the stories that many have read and loved over the years. She includes: Matthew and Marilla her new family members, Diana her best friend, Miss Stacy her teacher, Gilbert the boy who gives her grief at school, and the area she lives in. The text is beautiful and poetic.

This charming book is a perfect introduction to Canadian author L.M. Montgomery's famous series. The illustrations are beautiful and rich and draw you into the story. They are vintage type illustration that I have come to expect from illustrator Geneviève Godbout. This is an amazing bedtime story that I will read to my granddaughter over and over. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book to read.

Anne Shirley gets ready for bed and thinks of all her family and friends before falling asleep.

Cute.

It's not a good introduction to the characters, but fans of L. M. Montgomery's book will appreciate all the details included.

This sweet picture book captures the very spirit of Anne. Genviève Godbout's illustrations are precious, and very calming, making this a perfect bedtime choice. (An Anne-loving mom introduced me to this one.) The colors are dusky and muted, and the textures soft.

"I always say good night to the things I love, just as I would to people. I think they like it." And so Anne helps your little ones say good night.

On seeing the cover, my husband asked me, "Is Anne sleeping in a tree?" Oh, you have such a journey ahead of you...

"I had made up my mind that if you didn’t come for me to-night I'd go down the track to that big wild cherry-tree at the bend, and climb up into it to stay all night. I wouldn't be a bit afraid, and it would be lovely to sleep in a wild cherry-tree all white with bloom in the moonshine, don't you think? You could imagine you were dwelling in marble halls, couldn’t you?"

How many goodnight books does one child need? Apparently a lot more if you ask the publishers of children's picture books. I'm not convinced that is true but here is another one nonetheless.

I grew up on Anne of Green Gables. My Nana lived in PEI (born and raised) and so Anne Shirley was a key part of my life and understanding her (as she lived far away from me). She sent me all the books at an early age and I got to visit PEI a few years ago; including a trip to the Anne house and Avonlea 'town'. What I discovered from my time revisiting Anne both in PEI and with this book is that Anne lives in a more innocent time than we do today. Her carefree nature is not as easy for me to accept in our current world of danger. Goodnight Anne with it's soft pastel colours and faded edges only enhanced that for me.

Geneviève Godbout has given us gorgeous illustrations in Goodnight Anne that feel like they might be drawn while on a cloud in a sweet dream. This is a lovely precedent to give a child right before bed; and so I love the feel of Goodnight Anne. But the writing of Kallie George is nothing new or special. There are references to Anne 'moments' that small children will not know and probably just brush off. This book is really a book for adults. Those who love Anne and just want more of her innocent nature. And while I'm sure that may make for a lovely moment between a parent and a child; I'm not convinced that this goodnight book is any better than the rest.

Perhaps if your child goes on to read Anne of Green Gables when they are older and remembers this goodnight book it could become a special thing. But otherwise this is just a trip down memory lane for the adults in a child's life. I would prefer to read engaging and insightful books to children that are a little less soft and more reflective of having courage, doing anything you want and finding your special place in the world. That said, if you're just looking to read about saying goodnight in a soft and feminine way then this one might be for you.

This picture book captures the whimsical nature of the original book and of the character Anne Shirley as she says good night to all the people and places we love in Anne of Green Gables. Both the text and illustrations were excellent. I'm not sure young readers unfamiliar with the main story will understand all the references, but lovers of the series will love this one. I received an advance reading copy through NetGalley with an unbiased review expected.

An adaptation, or inspired by, Anna of Green Gables, a well know story, that I never read, so can say if the relation to it is well done. Anyway, the illustrations style of this book is so beautiful, and just that made the book worth it for me. The story in itself is a bit light, but there is a good «be grateful» vibe to it that I loved. Worth it!

In this charming picture book, our beloved Anne Shirley says goodnight to everyone and everything she loves, as only Anne can. I read about Geneviève Godbout’s illustrations in this month’s issue of Quill & Quire, and thought Allison, you must get your hands on this book! Not only are the illustrations exquisite, but Kallie George has perfectly captured Anne’s spirit. This book is the perfect way to introduce young children to Canada’s favourite redhead! Thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Random House Canada for the ARC. I loved it!

A bedtime story, inspired by the main character of Anne of Green Gables, the little orphan girl in the novel written in 1908 by L.M. Montgomery. In this story she's preparing for bed, but takes time out to tell all the other people in her life, good, bad , or indifferent goodnight. A charming way to introduce and peak the interest of literary classics to the young reader.

Continuing with the Anne of Green Gables theme along with books like Anne's Colors and Anne of Green Gables: A Graphic Novel, we now have Goodnight, Anne, a delightful bedtime book featuring Anne Shirley at Green Gables, as she carefully says goodnight to the people and places that are important to her -- from Marilla and Matthew to Diana and the Lake of Shining Waters, Anne lovingly weaves in many Avonlea favorites that she must bid goodnight to before she can sleep.

I love the subdued nature of the illustrations, and the complementary, sunset-like colors that permeate everything. I also like the whimsical Anne and the way the text captures her voice and exuberance.

Will this appeal as much to children who've never read the series as it does to adults like me who've enjoyed it for decades? Maybe not to the same degree, but while they may not experience the nostalgia, they will hopefully still be intrigued by the setting, and relate to the different personalities of the people in Anne's life -- parent figures, bosom friend, and enemy (Gilbert). (Though Anne's declaration on the page featuring Gilbert that she will never forgive him might benefit from some context from an adult.)

Hopefully in addition to being charming and enjoyable now, this book will pave the way for a child's enjoyment of the actual series when they are old enough.

This is an adorable book, and a wonderful way for lovers of Anne of Green Gables to share this red-headed darling with their own children. Anne says goodnight to all her favorite people, things, and places (including her bosom friend Diana, the potted geranium on her windowsill, and the Lake of Shining Waters, among others). The illustrations are gorgeous, and you can practically see Anne's whimsical imagination floating about and wishing a good night to her world. Really sweet and mellow, and makes an excellent bedtime story. Good night, Anne with an E.

I received a free copy from NetGalley. Thanks!

I've just got to say: The illustrations in this were GORGEOUS. I loved the whimsical, magical way the pictures accompanied the text. Sometimes I felt like the text itself might be lifted a little too much from the original books (it seemed to follow a pattern of: "Goodnight, [object/person]. [near direct quote from book]" on each page). But I think that's not really a con if you're a big fan of the books or shows. Worth the read if only for the illustrations, though. :)

This is such a lovely book celebrating an even lovelier classic story. However, I don't quite know who the audience is (though I suspect it is mostly adults who read and loved the series). The picture book doesn't really tell much of a story, it just touches on the major characters in the series. To me this seemed like a nice companion to children who are being read the classic story aloud.

[ @tundra #partner ] 🍂 “I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.” 🍂 ⁣

There are so many things I love about Anne Shirley, so many ways she shaped me into the person I now am. Her enthusiasm and love for life especially resonated with me as a young girl trying to retain my optimism through middle school and beyond. 💛⁣

This beautiful picture book with its magical colored-pencil illustrations and vibrant prose captures the joy and individuality that called to me so many years ago when I first discovered Anne with an e.⁣

GOODNIGHT, ANNE is a wonderful way to introduce children to a beloved classic, even if you have never read ANNE OF GREEN GABLES yourself. ☺️⁣

5/5 🌟 A great bedtime story for ages 3+. ⁣
