This book is an absolute joy to read, a primer on and virtual tour of culinary Naples and Campania. With chapters devoted to the produce of the region, pasta and pizza, festivals and celebrations, towns of Campania and their foodways, and more, the author paints a vivid and exhilarating portrait of the foods and food culture of Naples and environs. It is packed with historical context, profiles of specific producers (and snippets of conversation with them), pizzaioli, owners of gelaterie, and culinary authorities. And, yes, recipes, too. Yet for all of this information, the book has a bright and breezy tone; Spieler's passion for the region and its people –indeed, her lust for life-- shine through in her warm and humorous tone. Be sure your passport is current before you crack the cover.
