Can I please have the old illustrator back?! These drawings are just so sharp and unlike what the characters are usually like! Also, this is one of the slower episodes of Giant Days I've read. Hoping it gets a bit more exciting in #39. But I do still adore Susan and McGraw's relationship.
If you are following me on Goodreads it looks like I am reading like 8 bijillion books right now but the truth of the matter is I just have not gotten around to reviewing everything I have read lately or finished reading. My goal this week is to try to catch up on that a little bit and to try to finish reading some books that I am close to the end on. I actually finished this volume of Giant Days like more than a week ago and wanted to read the next one right away but with graphic novels I make myself review one before I read the next so I have been waiting!
SPOILERS AHEAD
I really do not like giving too much away but these since I am so far into the series but I do highly suggest that you go ahead and read these because they are downright awesome. As for this volume, we see our three friends on their own paths dealing with their separate issues in their new living spaces. Susan is now living with McGraw which is a huge change compared to living alone or with her friends and Daisy is now working as an RA type person in the dorms. Esther is moving into the large house with the group of people and the friend she is closest with will not be back at the house for a bit due to something that happened in the previous volume (read it to find out)! My biggest issue with this volume is the illustration. As I was reading I noticed pretty much right away the characters looked pointy or had sharper edges in comparison to what I am used to with this series. I usually love the illustration and find that they only add to the graphic novel series however, upon doing a little research I found that I was not imagining these illustration changes. A lot of other people were talking about these changes online and hoping that the original illustrator would be back. I do still think this is an excellent series, I am still going to read it, and I am still excited by it. I am giving this issue four out of five stars.
A transitional issue to be sure. Our trio has their own paths to follow and trials to face, but I’m not sure I find it as entertaining, compared to them as a trio. I’m sure this is all to plan and that we’ll have everything get off to a roaring, dramatic start in the next issue.
Daisy does make for a wonderful advisor, but I keep hunting the panels for Ingrid follow-through....
New drawing style (again) is a bit jarring and I don’t know if I care for the lineart. But the characters are definitely recognizable and their expressions are in line with what we’re used to. I do want McGraw to have a shave now though.....
This felt like the issue that would have been released if the entire creative team were on annual leave. The story was a little bleak and the art wasn't what I was used to. I didn't enjoy this issue as much as I have previous ones but I'm almost out so I'm still trying to savor what I do have.. An easily forgettable read..
A rare occurrence in this series, but this issue felt like a misstep. The characters felt off in both dialogue and action, plus the illustrator is not nearly as good as the previous one! The artwork feels more amateur and angular than is has in the past.
It’s moving day! Okay, it’s not like this is the first time we’ve seen the cast move in to their new places for the year. But it is the first time they’ll all be living separately, at least since they’ve met. It’s a bitter sweet moment, to be sure. Naturally everyone has their own set of issues with the new living arrangements. Daisy had to scramble last minute to find a place, and while she got a great deal it requires a lot of work on her hand. She’s handling like a champ though, but let’s be honest here, who’s surprised by that? Esther is having her drama field used against her, but surely that isn’t the first time this has happened to her? I mean back in the first volume Suzie did the same thing. Granted it wasn’t for the same reasons and didn’t have the same level of maliciousness about it. Meanwhile Suzie is having issues with her big move with McGraw. While I’m sure we all saw that coming it was a little bit disappointing. I felt for her, sure, but I also felt like she was being a little bit harsh. Thankfully she’s got some wonderful friends to help her come around on even the toughest of issues.
I really like this series, but I feel like the recent issues have gotten sloppier in terms of writing. I'm also not a fan of the change in character design. Everyone looks more like a cartoon and there was a point where I wondered if I was reading a dream sequence because of how everyone looked.
I didn't really like the art in this one, but the story was super cute. I love McGraw! He is so sweet! I also love Daisy becoming an RA of sorts. She was destined to be the Momma-Boss.
