Well... this was certainly different. Different than anything I've read, and certainly different that anything I've read by this author before.

It's not a romance, either. So why did I read this, you may ask.

First off, the author is one of my FB friends. He posted a teaser from this book, a short passage about two men who have the same scar on their chin, one having no idea where he got the scar, and the other saying "I don't know yet."

"I don't know yet." ????

Color me intrigued.

Then the author offered this up for review, and I snapped it right up. Because I had to find out about this scar thing, for one, and my curiosity would not be denied.

It's short, but it sure packs a punch.

Daniel comes into consciousness on a seat in what appears to be an airport. He has no idea where he is, how he got there, or where he's supposed to be going. He doesn't recognize his face in the mirror and has no recollection of anything prior to "waking up". Realizing that he needs help, he stumbles around for a bit, until serendipity brings him to a waitress standing in front of a restaurant.

Her name is Martha, and she invites him to take a seat, since he looks hungry. They talk for a bit, and I wondered where this was going.

Enter Tam. Tam shows up in the restaurant and talks to Daniel. Well, he tells him a story, while Daniel has voices in his head telling him not to trust Tam.

Each chapter brings a new person to their table. All of them carry a piece of the puzzle, and all of them have a story to be told.

And Daniel has to make a choice.

What I really liked about this was that the author basically tells a story of good and evil, a story of how souls are born and reborn, and how evil can corrupt and destroy, but how good can fight back and possibly even win.

That every light needs a heart too, and that the heart cannot live without the light.

It ends on a very hopeful note, but also with a promise of more to come. I hear the author has plans to write a sequel.

Yes, please!

This sure was different, but it sure was worth reading. I hope you'll feel the same when you've read it.

Highly recommended.

** I received a free copy of this book from its author. A positive review was not promised in return. **

“The whole situation felt wrong. A strange place he couldn’t remember with strangers he didn’t know and music he couldn’t identify amounted to a place where he shouldn’t be. There was a hint of familiarity to everything, but nothing about the place made him feel like he belonged. He shouldn’t be here. And yet he had no idea where he was actually supposed to be.”

I had absolutely zero expectations when I began reading ‘Falling Awake’. Other than the blurb, which truly gives no actual details, I couldn’t begin to imagine the somewhat existential journey I was about to read. Daniel, who wakes up in a strange in-between place that resembles an airport, and his guides regarding the soul and reincarnation, Tam, Larenz, Alex, and Amanda, had me entranced.

A real good vs evil story

I read the first book in this series ages ago and finally got around to reading this second installment. In a way, I wish I would have read it when it was released but I finally found the perfect time and head space that I knew I would need for this story. This book has some heavy elements and makes you think of things that hover around in your mind but are easy to push to the background. I felt deeply for the characters. They are all very well written and I find myself wishing for friends like the protagonists. Who wouldn't want a group of good friends to go on a quest with. A real good versus evil story and I'm on pins and needles to find out what happens in the next book.

I want to warn you now, this has some SERIOUS trigger moments for some. It deals with your good vs evil and the evil pulls out all the stops, with rape, murder, torture, attempted murder and so much more. It’s not a pretty picture in any way so if it is a problem for you, please be careful.
Having said that, I definitely want to read these next two books and see what’s going to happen. It’s not often that I get to read stories of reincarnation and the effects or aftereffects of moving to the next body. Or what happens to the souls in the in-between. And in this one, it’s one heck of a story. One man ‘wakes’ up to find himself not knowing who he is, where he is and what he’s doing there. All he knows is he has a ticket in the name of Daniel in his pocket. He assumes that’s who he is but he really doesn’t know. He finally finds a sweet lady in a diner that helps him, when others begin coming in to see him. But it starts with a man named Tam, whom he can’t seem to get past, and a story that has his mind doubting everything. But when he finds out the rest of the story from the others, he finds out it’s him the evil wants and they are all doing all they can to keep his soul intact. But he has to start over, and the nightmare may not ever end.
This really was an intriguing story for me. It almost sounds bad to say I enjoyed it so much because of some of the content, but I really did. Because it was a neat and different approach to the afterlife. And the next lives. But I love the characters that come with him as well. They have their own distinct personalities that make you wonder about them at some points, but they know what they’re doing and it’s time to move forward. The one that cracks me up the most is Alex and when you read the end of the book, you will see why. The naughty little booger. But each have a connection and a desire to make sure the good overcome every time. And all Tam knows in his new little body, is there’s a special boy his age that needs him. And it’s time to for the new life to truly begin.
I’m anxious to see if the next one picks up where this left off. I’m wondering how they’re going to overcome what’s coming to them. And after them. I’m really going to like this I believe. I think you will too.

3 CRANKY STARS

This is a story that has been rewritten with some minor changes, mainly name changes. The original was published under the pseudonym Kage Alan. It is a story about; I am not really sure what it is about. It starts out as a man suddenly awakes in a strange place he does not recognize. It looks like an airport. In fact, he does not really know who he is or anything about his past. He has the feeling that there are other people around, but no one seems to notice him. Finally, he gets to his feet and starts walking around, looking for some help. He suddenly finds himself in a diner where a waitress acts as if she knows him. Casually, others walk into the diner and sit with him. He does not know them, but he feels they know him.

The rest of the story is these people telling stories about incidents in their pasts. It gets confusing at this point. They do not tell him who he is and what they want but they want him to go to the gate on his boarding pass. They seem to think the stories are important. I was so confused at this point; I was glad it did not take long to read. Thus the 3-star rating, it was just too complicated and did not make any sense. I prefer a story with more action.

For a short book (less than 100 pages) there was a lot packed into it. I was a little confused at times. This is the first book of a series, I am thinking this book is just a setup for the rest of the books. I'm looking forward to starting book 2 and seeing where the story goes.
