Dr. Connors reacts from The Rhino antidote he was previously working on and turns into The Lizard. Realizing this, he runs away but is spotted by his son Billy. The Lizard plots his human conquest and plans to defeat Spider-Man.
Stan Lee (born Stanley Martin Lieber) was an American writer, editor, creator of comic book superheroes, and the former president and chairman of Marvel Comics.
With several artist co-creators, most notably Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, he co-created Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, Thor as a superhero, the X-Men, Iron Man, the Hulk, Daredevil, the Silver Surfer, Dr. Strange, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Scarlet Witch, The Inhumans, and many other characters, introducing complex, naturalistic characters and a thoroughly shared universe into superhero comic books. He subsequently led the expansion of Marvel Comics from a small division of a publishing house to a large multimedia corporation.
Early on in the John Romita (JR) era this issue helps set the dynamic fights that would become central to ASM issues going forward: the Lizard using his tail as a whip that shatters the wall Spidey is climbing on is a 'gauge' of how strong his opponents really are. The Lizard uses his tail to cut through the webbing Spidey is hanging from...now he must fight with one arm in a 'web' sling!
"Come off it, Flash! You're as funny as a tooth-ache!" - Gwen Stacy
The Lizard returns to the pages of ASM, this time under the pencils of John Romita Snr, not that much has changed as he still looks like his classic Ditko "short face" Lizard, maybe Romita wasn't yet comfortable in changing appearances this early in his run. The Lizard is one of the few early designs that Ditko never hit a home run for me; he always reminded me of the frog out of wind in the willows wearing a lab coat.
Curt Connors is at Penn Station waiting for his family to return to the city, but before he gets to welcome them back he transforms into The Lizard! With a stroke of luck Peter is there seeing Aunt May off for a vacation (apparently a buy now & pay later deal!) on the same train platform and can pursue as Spidey. I love how Peter covers his face in his mask when he telephones Mrs Connors later; that's on par to Clark Kent taking his glasses off and no one recognises him as Superman, comics!
Peter takes the news of Betty and Ned's engagement well as he wishes her well and promises he wouldn't miss their wedding. Meanwhile... Flash Thompson is off to his army draft physical and Mary Jane meets the gang & no one can quite believe that ol' puny Parker already knows her.
Dr. Connors tiba-tiba berubah kembali menjadi Lizard.
The return of The Lizard means that things are about to get tough for Peter Paker again, despite the fact that the start of the issue has him able to smile as he received attention from both Gwen Stacy and Mary Jane. There's a good mix of teen angst and gravity-defying action here, and it's all set up for a tense tale that will conclude in the next issue.
We get a bit more of Harry in this issue, and he gets to meet Mary Jane! (Along with Flash and Gwen Stacy.) I’m really enjoying this Lizard arc, even as Peter gets more and more stress piled on top of him. Poor guy.
