Hearing about the Vulture's defeat of Spider-Man, Kraven becomes furious that he was denied his right to defeat the wall crawler and vows to hunt down his new enemy.
Stan Lee (born Stanley Martin Lieber) was an American writer, editor, creator of comic book superheroes, and the former president and chairman of Marvel Comics.
With several artist co-creators, most notably Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, he co-created Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, Thor as a superhero, the X-Men, Iron Man, the Hulk, Daredevil, the Silver Surfer, Dr. Strange, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Scarlet Witch, The Inhumans, and many other characters, introducing complex, naturalistic characters and a thoroughly shared universe into superhero comic books. He subsequently led the expansion of Marvel Comics from a small division of a publishing house to a large multimedia corporation.
Spidey gets tagged teamed by Kraven (K) and the (new) Vulture (V) - even as Peter Parker is getting over a cold at his new bachelor pad! This V is much more bloodthirsty! Just an aside: Ever notice how much K looks like J. Jonah Jameson? Romita really does a great job on the 'fighting panels' - great battle ish that is a great example of Lee/Romita greatness!
A happy thought of mine is that: if Aunt May (in the Amazing run always) is an old frail woman in the 60s, then even her skeleton is dust in her grave by now. Other than that awful, toxic, bitch, I had fun with this issue and I love the illustrations!
Spider-Man is left fallen, after been stricken with a virus and finished off by The Vulture and to make things worse Kraven has caught up with the wall-crawler. Lucky for Parker Kraven equally wishes to prove his dominance over The Vulture.
Confusingly Aunt May calls for the doctor to check in on bed ridden Peter however she’s told that “he’s in surgery” – so is he a part time surgeon or part time doctor?! Anyway that nit-pick doesn’t stop this from being another Romita and Lee classic.
Spider-Man, already weakened by a mysterious virus, finds himself the target of two formidable foes: the relentless Kraven the Hunter and the vengeful Vulture. The stakes are high as these two villains not only threaten Spider-Man’s life but also vie for supremacy over each other, creating a dynamic and unpredictable conflict. The tension is palpable, and watching Spidey navigate this dual threat while barely clinging to his strength keeps you on the edge of your seat.
Romita Sr.'s illustrations are, as always, spectacular. His art captures the raw energy of the battles and the vulnerability of Peter Parker’s condition. The fluidity of Spider-Man's movements, even when he's at his weakest, and the menacing presence of both villains are brought to life with incredible detail. Romita's knack for emotional expressions adds depth, especially in scenes with Aunt May, who is as worried as ever.
Lee’s dialogue is sharp, capturing the essence of each character, from Spider-Man’s quick-witted quips to Kraven’s prideful arrogance. The pacing is well-balanced, alternating between pulse-pounding action and quieter, character-driven moments.
Peter recovers from his illness, fights the Vulture and Kraven, and…Kraven has a pet tiger solely to prove to himself he’s strong? Sounds about right to me. ANYWAYS. We’ve got some silly moments, such as Harry being a little heartthrob and Peter’s usual mid-combat quips. And hey, Harry tried getting everyone to be quiet while Peter was trying to get some rest! What a nice pal. (I’m totally normal about him)
Another 3.5 star thriller. Reading through several of Kraven’s first appearances.
In this one it’s actually Kraven vs the Vulture! Kraven thinks the Vulture killed Spidey before he got the chance so he goes after the old bird. This was a fun one.
