It’s the Sheffield University Graduate job fair! It’s definitely fun and not a terrifying reminder of Daisy, Susan and Esther’s encroaching future as Real Adults.
Recently, I have read a bunch of graphic novels (I read the last volume of Saga that is currently available and started some new series I have always been interested in). I am currently working on writing up the reviews for all the different graphic novels I read recently but for now, I am going to focus this review on Giant Days issue number 39 (which I can not even believe I am that far into this amazing series).
SPOILERS AHEAD
In this issue, we find our trio in a very familiar to my real life situation. They are going to the career fair at their university (something I attended during one of my last semesters at my own school and I think many others have had this experience as well). Daisy is super hyped to be going to the fair, she shows up incredibly prepared and has even signed up for the resume writing clinic (much like my younger self) whereas some of our members of the trio are not as excited. Esther is being dragged to the fair by Daisy and Susan is dragging McGraw to the fair because she does not want him to be stuck here while she finishes her medical school education. However, as we all know things never go as planned and they definitely do not go as planned at the career fair!
I loved this storyline it felt so familiar to real life for me but I think that is because I have experienced this part of college and now looking back on it as an adult I remember those friends who came to the fair unprepared or were dragged there. Additionally, it seemed like the art style was getting a little closer to what it used to be (which for me was a beloved art style, I think something I got very attached to with the 37 issues I read in that style). There was still something a little different about the style but it was much closer to what I love in these graphic novels! I am giving this volume five stars on Goodreads.
This issue was too relatable. Daisy and Esther head to the job fair, where Daisy succeeds exponentially, and Esther bemoans the futility of capitalism and the meaninglessness of the 9-5 work force. Susan convinces McGraw to go to the fair for his own good, a moment that I deeply appreciated because it really shows how far their relationship has come. The last page or so is an update on Ed living with his parents.
This issue felt too real. I loved how anti establishment Esther was, while also panicking about her future. Same here, girl. Daisy's storyline felt a little unrealistic, but I feel like there's always one person you know from college that actually lucked out and got a job with a real salary and benefits. The art was the same style as last issue. Still not my favorite but I didn't mind it so much in this issue.
Favorite quote via Esther: "Excel is the opposite of passion."
Job fair horror! It's odd to be wanted, but wonder at the same time, could I really do this. Once again shows how real this comic can be. Though what's with the two weird lines on some character's noses?
The difference in art style from previous issues through me off, but I really enjoyed the plotline. I loved Susan rose to the occasion to help McGraw and Daisy, even though a job fair wouldn't normally be in her wheelhouse. The cliffhangers of Ester's mysterious job offer and maybe romance have me excited for the next issue!

Wish I were as successful and as smooth at interviewing as Daisy!
It’s been intriguing to see how our cast has changed and their personalities developed, especially when facing impending adulthood. But I really can’t stand that new mustache...
Daisy is CRAZY not to take the drone job. 40,000 starting, two rides on a jet a month to anywhere... Benefits! As someone who is struggling to pay for health insurance because my boyfriend makes too much money but I have cancer so I have to see a dr... I'd KILL to get this kind of job.
This was not the same to me at alllllllll. I'm hugely disappointed because it feels like I'm reading a totally different series. GIANT DAYS HAS BEEN TARNISHED :(
