I’m Dave, and I write. I’m also a father, a reader, gamer, a comic fan, and a hockey fan.

Unfortunately, there is a problem with those terms; they don’t so much describe me as label me, and the map is not the territory. Calling me a father says nothing about my relationship with my daughter and how she thinks I’m silly. It ignores the essence of the relationship for convenience.

It’s the same with my love of books, comics, role-playing games, and hockey; labels only say what, not how or why. They miss all the good parts.

If you want more of a biography: I was born in the UK, grew up in Canada, and have spent time in the US. I’ve been freelancing for the last seven years. Before that, and in no particular order, I’ve managed a bookstore, worked in a pawnshop, been a telephone customer service rep, and even cleaned carpets for a living.

As a freelancer, I’ve done everything from simple web content, to ghostwritten novels. I’ve even written a course on trading forex online. I’ve also edited everything from whitepapers to a science fiction anthology.

Doc Vandal and crew were enjoying a rare few moments of quiet. They had recently returned home after having traveled half way around the world to save one of their own, and, in the process, saving the world from an alien incursion that could have seen the complete destruction of civilization as they knew. But, as the saying goes, there is no rest for the weary and the peace they had been enjoying was interrupted by a seemingly impossible direct attack on their 87th floor HQs. Soon, the team is in pursuit of the rebuffed invaders, a pursuit that will take them to the US southwest and a confrontation with a cult and its leader that worship technology above all else, and whose goal is to leave the world of the unenlightened behind...no matter what the cost.

The days of the original "pulp" adventures have faded away into the past. Bizarre technology...evil cults...criminal masterminds...and heroes bigger than legend. Those were all available for a dime simply by visiting your local news stand. Thankfully, over the last 20+ years, there has been a resurgence in the type of story telling that was part and parcel of the stories from that era. And, while the cost of admittance may have risen, the journey is just as fun and exciting as those your fathers, mothers, and grandparents, used to take while hiding under the covers of their beds late at night.

With this, the 5th book in the adventures of DOC VANDAL and crew, author Dave Robinson continues to give his readers a time machine back to the 1930s. With each new book, his world and characters become more defined...more real...as his stories grow in depth and the simple joy of reading.

For me, next to the origin story in the first book, this was arguably the best of the rest as Robinson's ability to weave multiple story lines throughout his books are beginning to give readers a hint of the full tapestry of the world that his heroes and villains live and fight in. And, just as one thread may brighten that tapestry, the author drops another seemingly meaningless aside that opens the door for the next. And, as with the best, writers, he presents them in such as way that it's only until later that the reader smacks themselves on the head and yell "Of course!!!"

With more books under construction. hopefully we will see the next adventure of DOC and crew soon.

Look, Doc Vandal is pure pulpy fun. That means that if you don't like pulpy adventures you'll think this is ridiculous, over-the-top, and just sort of absurd. But if you like pulpy adventures, you'll be reading going "This is ridiculous, over-the-top, just sort of absurdly AWESOME", and it will be exactly what you're looking for.

The American Bundist Nazi's want their ZL-38 air battleship back and are willing to kidnap Vic to get it. Meanwhile, a scientist is kidnapped by a tech-worshipping cult who are masters of a propulsive light beam and a utopian dream that may involve the destruction of the sun.

Evil villains, over-the-top pulp action, in Robinson's own words. dieselpunk dialled to eleven.

An incredible story. I have enjoyed all 5 books in the series and looking forward to the next one. The series gets better with each book. I will be reading all of Dave Robinson books I can find.
