USA Today bestselling author Nicola Davidson worked for many years in media and government communications, but hasn't looked back since she decided writing erotic historical romance was infinitely more fun. When not chained to a computer, she can be found ambling along one of New Zealand’s beautiful beaches, cheering on the All Blacks rugby team, history geeking on the internet, or daydreaming. This was the smutty historical romance I have been eagerly waiting for!!!! Clayton, a gentleman turned starving artist, has set his sights on Lord and Lady Fenton, a baron and baroness. When he’s commissioned to paint an erotic portrait for them sparks fly, rekindling the passionless marriage between the Fentons and providing Clayton the polyamorous union he’s always craved. Ugh I adore this, it’s so fun and delightfully erotic. I would definitely recommend it for those on the market for some queer, short, sweet and sexy historicals.
The Surrey Sexual Freedom Society is certainly a new favorite series for me.
cw: period typical homophobia, disowning of queer character, internalized biphobia
I enjoyed this; the best thing about it were the sex scenes and moments of heat between the MCs. There was a lovely chemistry between the characters, and I enjoyed spending time with them. It's also just a pleasure to have polyamory representation in historical romance.
Otherwise, it felt a bit rushed, and I had a hard time buying into the happy ending, mostly because I didn't feel like I got to witness a lot of emotional or romantic attraction in the story. So much of the story was based around the conflict of can polyamory and bisexuality be possible that there wasn't as much room for romance as I'd prefer.
I was a bit disappointed by the anti-sex work feel of the story, and the throwaway fat antagonistic joke at the end. Mostly because I had expected this particular author not to go to those places. (These things are common in genre romance, so they don't usually catch me by surprise, but they did in this case.)
Another great entry in this series. This was the one I was most excited for because I really enjoy romances with more than two people. I loved the dynamic of these three. It was a bit confusing at first because it seems like Clayton is pining over Susanna and Joseph from the beginning but then it seems like he’s meeting them for the first time later on. However, this was a minor thing and it didn’t really bother me. Once they all started interacting, I loved it. I especially enjoyed Susanna. I really liked the way she was bolder than expected while still seeming somewhat nervous and flirtatious. I’m glad this was a true MMF where all three people interact mostly evenly. I think this is my favorite of the three I’ve read so far. I’m excited for lady Portia’s story in the next book and then it’s on to the Christmas one!
i’m always excited for a poly romance, but the dynamic in this just wasn’t working for me. I didn’t like the way Joseph treated Susanna pre-Clayton. Honestly, it really seemed like Joseph still didn’t really care about Susanna that much by the end either. I generally like my poly to be mutual between everyone, and I just didn’t buy it in this. I also didn’t like that everything just lacked tension/emotions/romance. i give this a big meh.
I really enjoyed this queer historical romance novella! Clayton lusts after a married couple whom he discovers aren't as in sync as they'd seemed from afar. In fact, Susanna and Joseph have been struggling with their sex life, and having a boudoir painter like Clayton in their midst lets them discover what they've been missing in their relationship - and Clayton turns out to be a key part. His presence lets them explore with him, and with each other, their secret desires. It's a steamy and entertaining read with a happy ending for the trio, and another delightful story in the Surrey Sexual Freedom Society series.
It was a good read! I loved meeting these three characters; each of them had something very interesting about them. I usually don't say anything about the length of novellas but maybe this one needed a little more? I somehow needed more in the emotional journey department or the romance itself between them. It was a bit too rushed at the end for me.
I think this is my first time reading polyamorous romance and I have to say, I really liked this novella. In fact, were it not for a few things that made me grit my teeth, I would've rated this higher.
What I loved/liked:
- casual LGBTQ rep (most characters in the series are either gay or bi) - two bi characters - quite an emotional exploration of blossoming poly (m/m/f) relationship, given the short length of the story - I would shelf this book as erotica so naturally sex made for a large part of the story, but still, I liked how the relationship between Clayton, Joseph and Susie progressed - queer characters supporting each other and building a safe community for themselves
"Teeth gritters":
- biphobic remarks like "why can't you just decide", which, while I can understand are thrown in the interest of so-called historical accuracy, felt completely unnecessary, especially given how Susanna protested being perceived as sheltered society lady and made a point of underlining her "worldly experience" from observing people at the docks or something of that sort...so if she's so worldly and can understand people being attracted to the same sex, what's got her head-scratching about being attracted to both men and women, WHAT, WHAT SUSIE
- not sex-work friendly (self-loathing stemming from past involving sex-work)
Anyway, overall I still enjoyed it a lot and I will definitely venture to find more books with polyamory rep in the future.
Trigger warnings: homophobia and biphobia (period typical), mentions of conversion "therapy"
First read from this author - very impressed! Appreciated the attention to each of the layers of the blossoming relationship and to the impediments as well. Engrossing and enlightening.
Mr. Clayton Irving was certainly no vicar material, notwithstanding what his father thought. Clayton had become instead London’s most celebrated painter – albeit in hushed tones – of scandalous portraits. Clayton had been admiring, and lusting, from afar the lovely Lady Susanna Fenton and her delectable husband. Susanna had heard of Clayton’s artistic talents, she wanted more than her husband Joseph’s lukewarm caresses, so maybe having a provocative portrait painted by Mr. Irving would heat up Joseph’s blood. She couldn’t hope for more, certainly. Because Mr. Irving looked just as fine as her handsome husband …
MY LORD, LADY, AND GENTLEMAN is yet another proof of Ms. Davidson’s extraordinary talent: her prose is utterly splendid, the dialogues are delightful; her use of Regency vernacular is beyond reproach. She also establishes the settings and the characters swiftly and clearly to give us a crisp picture, even in a novella. We know these people, who they are, what makes them tick, and I loved the Pentons’ backstories as well as the details on the paintings. Clayton, Susanna, and Joseph are all superb characters; they have unusual tastes in a society that severely frowns upon them, and the author handles everything as subtly as our main protagonists. The sex scenes are sizzling hot, and so lovely and loving at the same time.
The thing I dislike in historical romance is that they too often feel like contemporary romances in period costumes, and I try to stay away from “steamy historicals” and this is not so with Nicola Davidson, because of the context. I know Ms. Davidson’s books will be very sexy, but she has a magic touch at making everything convincing: it is what I expect; it’s not like getting tons of sex scenes when they are unnecessary. Nicola Davidson writes enticing, and very naughty, characters, in a lushly described environment, while never straying from the sensibilities of the era, and making the whole thing convincing and utterly irresistible. The novellas are always too short, but I think it might be what makes them so sweet: no time wasted on unimportant matters and telling a sexy tale with a solid foundation. Dare we hope for Portia’s story next?
Super hot and mostly sweet but two things soured this for me. I’m tempted to blame the length but if the author didn’t see either of these as problematic, or as problematic in the same way as they are for me, additional words & pages would likely have frustrated me more.
1. Joseph is totally and completely in his own head. Susanna suffers from this too, to be sure, but Joseph’s version is so much worse because he is making decisions that impact them both and ignoring, no - worse - OBLIVIOUS to the fact that she is so desperately unhappy. Yes, they BOTH needed to be better communicators but she at least begins along that path once Clayton catalyses the situation. I’m stoked they get their HEA and all but Joseph’s behaviour isn’t ever really dealt with. He never apologises. The only times he says sorry it’s cuz he’s been caught doing something without being honest about it - even though it’s clear that he knows he ought to be honest with her - and when he doesn’t wanna taint her with his “bad blood” so the apology is for something being wrong with his blood, not for his neglect of her. Maybe there’s no need to belabour the point and his apology can be assumed, YMMV. I have a hard time buying into the level of hurt and insecurity shown by BOTH of them being resolved instantaneously. Magical fucking isn’t enough, imo, to resolve relationship problems in cashew romance and adding a unicorn cock to make it that much more magical doesn’t do any better at addressing the underlying issues.
2. Susanna is frustrated by the empty-headed gossips of the ton and ... I get it - there’s a class thing here that the author isn’t managing all that well - but she throws all ton women away (more than once). Susanna’s frustration with the the people she now mingles with in the new life forced upon her could easily have been expressed in other ways without laying blame on only women. Men were just as prone to gossip, though they often liked to call it something else, and just as full of bullshit prejudice - so why isn’t she irked with the entire ton?
DO BETTER ROMANCE WRITERS. I mean, do better ALL writers, for sure. There’s simply better awareness and traction on this sort of thing from the romance folks.
Wonderful, quick read about a ménage à trois between Mr. Clayton Irving, a struggling artist, Lady Susanna Fenton, a favourite of the ton, and Lord Joseph Fenton, her husband who is keeping up appearances. This is an erotic tale, but includes the feelings and circumstances of the characters that bring them to life for the reader. Very enjoyable.
Excellent romance! the leads are all very compelling and fun which is impressive for the short amount of time we spend with them. Short and sweet, I only wish it was a little longer ;v;
Literally Nicola is the best author at writing poly relationships that I have ever seen. She's absolutely stunning and this book (and series) is phenomenal!
I decided to read book #2 and this one back-to-back. This book was very different from the m/f romance novels I normally read, but I enjoyed the book and the characters!
Starring Mr. Clayton Irving, Lady Susanna Fenton, and Lord Joseph Fenton.
Clayton is a disowned third son. His father wants him to become a vicar, but he choses the life of an artist instead. Beside, his love of debauching both men and women is not exactly fitting to a life of ministry. His dream is to live in a ménage relationship and his desire are a stone throw away when he meets Lord and Lady Fenton. But they are society’s new darlings and oh so very stuffy and proper... or so it would seem.
Susanna is frustrated with her husband. He treats her like a porcelain doll. She’s tired of living in a cold and distant relationship. She’s determined to shake things up, so she commissions Clayton to paint a very risqué picture of her.
Joseph has done everything he could to claw his way to top... some shocking deeds that in society’s eyes would be considered depraved and illegal. He wishes to put all that behind him and live respectably with his wife, who he loves very much. But seeing Susanna and Clayton together is fighting a battle with himself for being attracted to the both of them.
Who knew that “three thirds make a whole”? Together these 3 are dynamic. Their art/posing sessions are Hot Hot Hot!! I love that they shed their inhibitions and become who they truly are within their ménage... I mean, wowza!! Sit in front of a fan when you read this y’all, coz Clayton, Susanna, and Joseph are a wonderfully steamy trio.
Once again Nicola Davidson wrote a sensual story with a lot of heart. I loved these three characters.
This is book 3 in the Surrey Sexual Freedom Society Series.
My star system: 4 stars: Book was great... loved the characters... will definitely be re-reading this story... but didn’t make me cry.
Lady and Lord Fenton’s marriage is in trouble: she is yearning for a child, he is keeping secrets from her and neither of them is satisfied. Enter: Clayton Irving. A sensual artists commissioned to create a nude portrait is attracted to both of them and craving a family with a man and woman. The three of them learn how to build something beautiful together despite the obstacles.
Susanna and Joseph don’t know how to talk about their desires and needs because he puts her on a pedestal and holds both of them to impossible standards but once Clayton helps them open a dialogue, their passionate natures are unlocked. It works because they are good friends, willing to be patient and affectionate with each other.
The paragraphs from Clayton’s perspective in particular were a delight, Nicola did an excellent job of presenting the world from an artist’s point of view.
Make sure to have ice cubes on hand while reading this novella, as the heat level is off the charts 🔥🔥🔥 Trust me when I say that consent is very enthusiastic in this book and you will blush ;)
As much as I adored this entire series, I wish this particular volume was slightly longer. Would have loved to see more scenes of domestic bliss between our adorable ménage outside of the bedchamber and Clayton getting support from his friends to deal with his abusive family.
If I were to find one word to sum up this novella, it would be decadent. Like a bar of Belgian dark chocolate. Looking forward to Lady Portia’s story!
Content note: mentions of being subjected to homophobic violence in the past; confrontation with abusive family members

Estranged from his aristocratic family for choosing art over a third son’s proper path of the church, Mr. Clayton Irving lives in wretched circumstances. His only joys are his friends in the SSF society and an extraordinary talent for sensual portraits. Then he's commissioned to paint Lady Susanna Fenton. All his financial woes gone if he can hide his fierce craving for her and even more forbidden her husband Lord Joseph Fenton. It’s like dipping into a box of a your favourite chocolates & eating the lot - a guilty pleasure! A short story that delivers, I've been intrigued by Clayton in the earlier books & so pleased he has has his story. Whilst the book is hot it also has the story of three people finding themselves & finding love & contentment.
This was my first Nicola Davidson book and I thoroughly enjoyed it! I'm always looking for a good erotica novella and it's always so hard to find ones set in historical times. Lady Susanna and Lord Joseph are stuck in an unhappy marriage, even though they love each other. Clayton, the handsome, creative artist, sweeps into their lives, enhancing their communication with each other. Together they realize that their unconventional relationship is exactly what they need to garner their HEA. The scenes are steamy and the characters are likeable. A great read and I look forward to reading more of Ms. Davidson's books!
Estranged from his family after refusing to serve the church as his father believes is the duty of the third born son, Clayton is an artist and paints suggestive and provocative portraits. Now he has been commissioned to paint a portrait of one half of the couple he has been secretly pining after. The other members of the Surrey SFS understand, accept, and support Clayton’s sexual preferences and want him to find happiness. The couple are struggling romantically and Susanna is hoping that commissioning a portrait like the ones that Clayton paints will send a message to her husband and push their relationship in the right direction. Instead, together they discover that the thing that their marriage needed was the addition of Clayton and his love.
This one may have become my favourite in the series. I loved the dynamics between the three characters and I enjoyed the angst and drama that having a polyamorous relationship set in a historical romance created in this book.
When Clayton is commissioned by Lady and Lord Fenton to do a nude portrait of the lady, Clayton finds himself no longer a struggling artist. Now he must confront his forbidden attraction to both of them. But when he gets the impression his feelings may be reciprocated he finds himself involved with both the Lord and lady in a ménage.
As with the rest of the books in the series, this was a quick and sexy historical romance. I just adore reading about these characters and their chemistry.
This one is now probably my favourite in the series. That being said, I honestly think all of these could have been full length novels or at least been 200 pages, as I felt some of the plot lines could have been expanded upon more.
Would highly recommend this series particularly those who are tired with your standard historical romance, these ones definitely bring something new to the genre.
Well, romance feels a little strong because again very heavy on the sex and light on the emotions. There’s honestly a lot of angst in this one, and I don’t know that those feeling were really resolved due to the length of the story. The ending definitely makes me more curious and Portia and Denham, and hope they get a happy ending of their own.
Content warning: one of the main characters has a lot of internalized negative feelings about himself relating to his family, his sexuality, and using sex work as a means to get to England. References to drunk parents/family members. Main character talks about family trying to “fix” his attraction to men; semi-graphic. Explicit on page set.

My favorite of the series so far! I loved Clayton from the glimpses we get in earlier books, and to see him get his HEA with such lovely, interesting people is great.
If I have a complaint it's that the HEA comes together too quickly and too solidly for such a short story. From "hello" to "together forever" is a lot of ground to cover in 150 pages, never mind 85, making the ending not as satisfying. Otherwise I love most everything about this book - moving on to the next post haste.
This story accomplishes attractions, setbacks and a very sweet HEA in an impressively few pages. It isn't unnecessarily explicit, meaning that every scene is plot-driven, ideal in a shorter work.
I give it an average rating because there wasn't a lot that intrigued me. That's just me, though. I'm a 30+ year polyamory veteran. To anyone new to the idea, and less picky about the often minimal communication these three have on-page, particularly between the Lord and Lady, it'll certainly rate higher.
