I'm in need of a happy, fun read after this. A very happy, super fun read.
The Quarry Street series isn't a cheerful one, and its third installment is the most depressing one. No surprise there. Both the main and the secondary characters in this series had emotional baggage, problems, insecurities, heartache, grief. Whatever weight the main four carried, it was in no small amount the result of the tragic death of Jennilynn Harrison when they were all only teenagers, and this is the story of Jenni's life right before it was cut short.
Some of the scenes were familiar as they were part of the previous two books, only here they were from Jennilynn's perspective. I don't know what to say about her. She was so self-destructive, I have a hard time understanding why she behaved in that manner. And where were her parents in all that? Lots of questions without satisfying answers.
This story also introduced two new characters whose paths crossed with Jenni's: Rebecca and Tristan. Of course, their lives were fraught with problems of their own, but since Jennilynn's led to her death, I preferred reading about Tristan and Rebecca. It was less depressing.
Rebecca and Tristan are supposed to get their own book All the Truths We Reveal. Hopefully, it won't be long until it comes out.
I'm not completely sure what I expected for an ending, but I know this ending made my heart hurt. Hart definitely introduced enough new characters in this one, as well as enough of their back story to allow for more books set in Quarreytown if she ever felt like writing more of them. And I'm a masochist, so I'd read them.
I read the first two books in this series and like them. This one was going to an earlier time to explain what was behind Jenni's death, and since I always like to know the 'why' of things, wanted to read this. But it was depressing and showcased a lot of people not really caring about others, which is not what I got out of the first books. If I could do it over, I'd skip this one.
It was heartbreaking to learn how Jenny felt inside. I liked this story because I always want to know why and how things happen. I love this series. Can’t wait til the next one is available.
This was a good series. I like the way this book have you the back story on everyone and then give the details of what actually happened to Jenni because I was wondering myself what happened.
This was a very sad story but picked up towards the end. Some well described characters and an interesting storyline. of how people learn to cope with tragedy in life and build a better future.
