Dr. Dominic Walliman is a YouTuber and award-winning science writer. As well as writing the Professor Astro Cat books he produces the YouTube channel Domain of Science. He worked for several years on quantum computing, receiving his PhD in quantum device physics in 2010.
The team of Walliman and Newman have done it again. This time Professor Astro Cat and his companions travel through the solar system - using a cool spaceship and jet packs. The trip begins with a 2-page spread of the entire solar system, then zooms to the sun to get a close-up look. Each of the 8 planets (sorry, Pluto) and the asteroid belt are visited in turn. Nifty details about space probes and the Hubble telescope are also in the text, as well as appearing in the illustrations. Explanations of what causes day and night, or reminders to never look directly at the sun will help budding astronomers. Readers will also learn surprising facts like "Saturn...could float on water!"
This is a title that can hold the interest of very young students with its charming characters and colorful illustrations, while also sparking interest in further study for older students. They may want to know more about the Messenger space probe, or why scientists believe there could be diamonds floating in the center of Uranus. Whatever it is that catches their fancy, Professor Astro Cat is the coolest feline scientist in the solar system.
This book has the perfect amount of information on the page for young readers. Nothing overwhelming but leaves room for lots of questions and further reading. One star off because the authors didn't even mention Pluto!
I’m always looking for science-themed children’s books, so I was excited to hear about the Astro Cat series. The premise is engaging and the illustrations are vivid and easy to follow. But, my space-obsessed 5-year-old pointed out the following misstatements on our first read-through—the Sun “is not really moving” (it doesn’t move in relation to the earth, but *is* moving in relation to the rest of the galaxy), Mercury “has no atmosphere” (it does have a thin atmosphere), the Saturn’s rings are made of ice (really both ice and rock). In fairness, Saturns rings are *mostly* ice, so I don’t really blame the author omitting the fact that they are also partially rock. But the other two misstatements bother me; he could have easily reworded them to avoid being misleading. All that being said, I think that these are all minor issues, and I’m eager to read more books from the Astro Cat series with my son.
This was great! I think any budding astronomer would enjoy this book! Loads of info presented in an entertaining fashion. Illustrations were very well done and colorful! 3rd grade up should find it useful.
I loved this book so much! I see these books have a series of science books and I want to run out and grab them all because I think they are making science accessible and simple for very young readers!
Loved this fact filled book about the solar system narrated by Professor Astro Cat! It has short, interesting pieces of text that are sure to engage readers. The art work is very cool and modern.
A very nice book for young children (in elementary school) to read about the order of planets, and simple facts surrounding these planets. A fun read with your children or smaller siblings.
