So after reviewing each volume individually I just wanted to place this all in one review here for the series.

This is a darker X-Men series than you might expect. These kids go through hell and almost die, some do, in very screwed up ways. It shows hate crime in all it's bloody ways, and it shows how hopeless the world can feel sometimes. With a large cast of kids Craig is able to give a good showcase for almost everyone. Some get some deep backstory that was needed to flush out the characters and by the end it feels like a complete team. Sadly cut short by being canned it feels rushed at the end and also there's some edgy/dark moments that feel a little too much. Still, if you haven't read this, I do highly suggest atleast giving it a whirl. It's a easy 3.5 out of 5 but I'll push it to a 4 because it's something different than most X-Men series.

Hopefully one day we get a similar series like this!

Maaaan this is awesome.

Ok... so, you remember all those nice, cute teen mutants you met in Nunzio DeFilippes and Christina Weir’s New Mutants and New X-Men?

Well... Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost are about to fuck them up. Some are going to die. Some are going to get their asses kicked. Some will become murderers. Oh, and they all get to meet X-23.

Going from Defilippes/Weir to Kyle/Yost is like watching some Freddie Prinze Jr movie from the late 90s, and having it swiftly morph into the first scene of Saving Private Ryan. It’s badass.

Real quick: Ok, so the first 4 issues of this volume are tie-ins that take place in the House of M alt universe. I skipped them. I don’t give a shit about the M-verse.

The rest of this story is epic. You really get to see these kids get a cold rush of reality. By the end, they have truly become X-Men, and the book really sells it.

Awesome art, high stakes, pulse pounding action... this is a big winner.

Don’t let the art fool you, this is damn near a horror series with everything that happens. Mr. Kyle, are you ok? Everything you write is so brutal and tragic (and so damn good), I honestly hope it’s not a reflection of your daily mental state.

These kids go through absolute hell, and experience pains no one should have to, things that will scar them forever. The story is so compelling that you can’t help but want to see what happens and pray that everything will be ok in the end, or that they’ll at least find some reprieve. And when Kyle writes, it’s not a very safe bet. But he makes you feel for them and feel their pain, and their wins feel that much bigger because of it.

The only time that comes at a detriment is a couple of moments where the situation feels unfair to an unbelievable point. Like when a tragedy takes place at the school, and yet the O*N*E sentinels are nowhere to be found, but have been there the whole time. Or a linchpin in Stryker’s plan behaving surprisingly stupidly. A relatively minor gripe that happens a few times. Also, with Kyle’s brutal style, the people he makes you hate you really hate. One such person is Emma Frost, who I can often find reluctantly respectable, but here I hated. But also can almost understand where she’s coming from. It’s complicated. That’s part of what makes Kyle good.

Overall, a well crafted tale that takes your heart on a rollercoaster where you cry the whole time but for some reason you paid for???
Kidding (kinda); this was great, and I would recommend.

I knew the whole killing spree was coming, Kyle and Yost's run here is pretty famous for the death of most of the cast. But, that foreknowledge doesn't stop the disappointment I have with the direction this book takes. It's fine as an action team book for the most part, but I was much more invested when it was teen soap opera at the X-Mansion than it as an exercise in mortality.

Brutal

House of M messed up the X-Men badly but nowhere was it felt the most horrific than in New X-Men. Stryker coming back with his Purifiers killing a ton of students in brutal fashion. That leading into Monroe is just a rough series of events that sets up the horrific status quo that is post House of M.

This is what comic books about mutants/superheroes should be instead of the dull, dumbed down shallow comics we get nowadays. Very good story, very good plots and twists and somehow emotional and dark. Awesome book !!

I enjoyed the start of this title, but it quickly goes from teens being teens to murderporn and skimpy outfits on minors. I like the idea better than the execution. ExecutionS, I guess.

Thought I'd revisit this classic New X-Men story which has just been re-released in a complete collection of the issues.
I really like the New X-Men as characters and was saddened when characters such as Mercury, Rockslide and Dust became bit part players in the X-Men world.
This issue tells their story after the events of M-Day and contains some shocking events, this is where the New X-Men were whittled down through not only power loss but through murder and in some cases both. It's not what you would have imagine happening to a bunch of teenagers in the X-Men world but that makes it even more powerful.
So be prepared to say goodbye to some much loved characters and also to see some characters grow into adults.
Still a great read after all these years. Though it does make me miss the days when the X-Men books had stories about hundreds of characters and not just the normal select few.
