"I know all too well...the beginning of that diary I never wrote-" Ellen, who has been plagued by sickness her whole life, heavily relies on her mother's care and love. When the bond between them decays in a horrific turn of events, Ellen despairs that she'll never get the love she so desperately craves and thinks she's done for-that is, until she crosses paths with a mysterious black cat. The cat offers her powers and a house to live in, which seems to change Ellen's life for the better. But the new witch soon discovers the gruesome secrets within this ever-changing house...
I wasn't sure what to expect of this one, but wow, it was just amazing.
Another one of my: It is Halloween I need horror-manga. I came across this one thanks to a blog I am following. It looked interesting and so I, naturally, had to try it out.
Holy crap, this was creepy as hell. Meet Ellen, a girl who has a disease that causes her skin to shrivel up and it looks like she is burned. It hurts her a lot and she cannot walk too much or too far. She is pretty much reliant on help, however we see that her mom is getting tired of it. She acts all sweet and caring, but underneath I could see that she wanted to escape.
And so things go from OK (or well, as OK as it can be when one has a disease like the one Ellen has) to terrible. As one day her mom abandons her, her dad goes mad, and then crap hits the fan as Ellen snaps. And I mean she really snaps. Holy wow.
As things seem to go badly, she meets a cat.. and gets turned into a witch. Now you may think this sounds like a pretty nice deal, especially given the nice options that come with it. However... as the days and months pass by (and maybe even years given how distorted time was in that house) she finds out things about the house, and eventually... she finds out more about her purpose. What a witch really means. What will happen if she try to go away. I knew it. These things never go well. It is not the first time that someone is offered something that turns very dark and evil. So kids, don't accept strange offers or contracts by things, monsters, or people. Unless you know 150% sure it is absolutely OK and safe.
She did try to convince herself that what she was doing was OK, that it wasn't wrong, that she had to do it but took no pleasure in it. Well, dear Ellen, I don't believe you. Especially not when you have that face that people in Higurashi have when they are mad and about to murder the hell out of you. Plus, the ways she did those things.. I am sorry I don't believe in your excuse of that this is what the house/those beings want(s). But I can somehow understand why she does what she does. Yes, it is wrong, yes it is bad, yes it is horrible, but can anyone blame her given her body? Given her family? Given how she doesn't have choice any more? Still, I don't approve, but I can understand it a bit.
There is tons of gore and the facial expressions are just the best. Really remind me of Higurashi.
I loved how it went from NOPE to OK to OH SNAP to OHHHHH NOOOEEEEESS to OH HELL this girl is mental. :P It was really nicely done.
All in all, oh boy I need the next book. And I definitely want to see if I can get the game.
I discovered it when I was in the throes of the breakup with my baby daddy and needed something to take my mind off of it. That is when I discovered Let’s Plays ladies and gentlemen and happened upon Markiplier. I will freely admit I used to have a crush on him and watched his videos NONSTOP. They were fun, scary, and I love watching horror games I will never play. Plus he’s cute. It’s a winning combo okay.
The Witch’s House is a about a witch and her house.
In the game you are Viola. A lovely young girl who out for a walk in the woods happens upon a talking black cat (uh okay) who leads her to this house that is full of my most favorite thing in the world
Murder
Yup, this is a house laced with all kinds of traps and full of monsters. One false move and it’s game over. And just when you think you reach the end…
Well, you should really play and find out 🙂 or you can read the manga like I am! Which is what this review is about.
While the game follows the narrative of Viola the manga’s main character is Ellen.
Ellen is our resident witch.
Born with a disease that is breaking down her body, she is a lonely girl abandoned by her mother and neglected by her father. You can see how this desolation and painful existence can lead to madness.
And to murder.
I’ll return him to the earth.
Mini spoilers but not really because this is merely the beginning but Ellen kills her mother and her father and a demon cat stumbles upon her dying body in the street and turns her into a witch.
They take off into the woods into The Witch’s House where Ellen’s broken body becomes whole and she has all that she needs in the world.
Happy story, right?
Lmao, did you forget whose blog you were reading? The girl who LIVES OFF OF MURDER.
Quid pro quo, Doctor Lecter…That demon kitty lives off of souls and Ellen might have anything she desires in the house but she is oh so lonely and thus she lures playmates through the woods and into the house to toy with until she grows bored.
And the house eats them.
It’s like a goddamn ouroboros.
So, I was huffy about this. Not about the manga because I thought it was fantastic but it’s the fact that EYE put this on my Christmas list and my FATHER DID NOT BUY IT FOR ME. Yes, I got a gift card but the fact that I had to be responsible to buy my gift had me irritable. Lmao, I asked for BOOKS AND GOT NO BOOKS FOR CHRISTMAS. AS FELLOW BOOK LOVERS YOU CAN SEE HOW PEEVED I WAS.
This manga was amazing however and that surprises me because I am often very letdown by adaptions and the fact that to me I thought they would have very little to go on I was very very shocked.
I didn’t think I would sympathize with Ellen as much as I did but seeing her backstory I truly did. Do I think she should have murdered helpless people brutally? No, of course not. But the girl is clearly deranged and her parents didn’t help in the slightest.
The art is gorgeous and the story is well told. I already read the second volume I’m just a little bit behind on my reviews. I have NO idea how many volumes there are going to be honestly. I initially thought there would only be two but after finishing the second I was like there’s no way it ends here and after doing some extensive research aka googling for 5 minutes found that there will be more. YAY.
This is a must read if you’re a fan of some dark murderous horror manga which I definitely am.
I’ve been in a big manga mood lately especially since I bought my new kindle fire. The comics and manga just look fantastic. And there are so many great mangas available for Kindle Unlimited that I have read that I can’t wait to review on here and share with you all 🙂 Like Fairy Tail.
As I said this is only volume 1…the next edition is even darker as we see how much farther Ellen sinks into her witchcraft and we meet Viola, the innocent village girl who Ellen “befriends”. Stick around for more of my witchy manga reviews and reviews in general!

So this manga was on sale at my LCS the last time I was there, and seeing as I have a thing for witches, I thought I might enjoy it. I will be honest and say I got a jolt when I started reading it. The sickness and the state of Ellen really resonated with the things I've been through myself, how my body still is - something I have to warn the hubby about, as he also wanted to read this manga, but react almost worse to mentions of sickness and being a prisoner to your own body than I do. So for me, the story turned out to be surprisingly deep.
There hasn't really been a plot to the story so far, but we have gotten a good introduction of the important characters, I think, and I guess there might be some more drama coming up.
The art was simple but nice, and just like the general writing, it was kinda trippy. I got kinda a ''mad alice in wonderland'' feeling from both the writing and the art, which I find interesting, so I think I'll give the series a chance to grow a little and see where it goes from here.
I know all too well... the beginning of that diary I never wrote—"
The Witch's House originates from an RPGmaker Horror game of the same name. The game is famous for its variety of sudden and at times shocking game overs, as well as its ending. It's cute and creepy in its artstyle and a favourite of mine to watch playthroughs of around Halloween.
The Witch's House: The Diary of Ellen is a prequel manga detailing the events leading up to the game, giving us more insight into Ellen's life before meeting the Black Cat, then becoming the "Witch," and the mysterious House the Black Cat gives her.
Kagesaki's artstyle captures the cute/creepy (and terrifying) atmosphere of The Witch's House. There were times however that I wished for a bit more detail, rather than just ominous black splotches obscuring something scary.
★★★★☆ 4/5. A fantastic expansion on the source material's lore: if you're a fan of the videogame you'll enjoy it greatly. Maybe not as enjoyable to someone unfamiliar to the source material.
Thank you skychu0 for gifting this manga via my Throne wishlist!
“Odd, isn't it? No one had any reason to love you... even though you deserved to be loved. Right?”
Years ago, I watched a playthrough of "The Witch's House" and fell in love with the clash of the simple, cute visuals and the story that game told. "The Diary of Ellen" matches up brilliantly, both from the sweet girl beckoning you on the cover and the both very true and slightly misleading description on the back. I knew what I was in for going in, but I wish I could have experienced this as a newcomer because holy cow.
This story acts as a prequel to The Witch's House, and to say more than that would ruin the surprise. Just like the house it takes place in, The Diary of Ellen is creepy and messes with your head. Highly recommend if you're in the mood for scary.
(also, art by the creator of Chibi Vampire? Yes please!)
i have loved the witches house for a long time, and i was beyond excited to see a manga adaption. this story is originally an rpg maker style of game that i initially had watched in a markiplier play through! (lol) i still watch this play through regularly even over 10 year later, and i kept wishing there was a manga or more to the story available! i don’t know how this manga evaded me for so long.
not only am i excited to see one of my favorite stories adapted into manga, but it was done incredibly well. the art style and paneling in this story is amazing, and it’s really great to see the other side of the story from the witches perspective. i truly feel like this is not just a great adaption of the game, but a great addition to it as well. i got so much information to the world building here that isn’t directly disclosed in the game, and it’s really awesome to see.
all in all , despite how big of a fan i am, what i think is really great about this manga is this work would stand on its own quite well. a reader who picks up this book without prior knowledge from the game would still be receiving a great story with great artwork and would be able to get what the needed from the story (plus more!). of corse i encourage anyone who has read this but never seen the game to experience or play it. however i can easily say the manga not just pleased me but exceeded my expectations, and you dont really miss out on much (besides the atmosphere!). i’m so excited to read the second one :)
The Diary of Ellen comprende dos tomos.
Based on a videogame I will admit I did not play yet I was able to see things from Ellen the Witch's perspective as we see what life was like before being granted her house or how she fell from an innocent girl into a monster for a simple wish. After all who doesn't want to be loved in the end.
This book shares a certain style of horror I have seen in Higurashi and Umineko by Ryukishi07 where there are elements of cuteness that are cut by a darker edgy style where eyes seem to bend unnaturally as the darkness twists the seemingly normal into something eerie that chills us as it suddenly appears. It has worked in the past and I am glad to say the art style still works as Ellen shows us a range of emotions that are joyous and creepy depending on when and how you look at it.
My favorite moment would probably be Ellen rationalizing why she does what she does in the house before we get to the end of the volume. We see her while she enjoys some strawberry shortcake and we see more foreshadowing just like at the beginning of the volume.
“Those who never know warmth simply freeze and die. But when those who have tasted something better realize the warmth they’ve lost… and feel death’s touch—that is true misery.”
INCREDIBLY haunting and atmospheric, just like the game before it. And, again, like the game, there is softness and levity to break up the grim, gory horror. I feel a little sick with just how good this was. It’s the sort of thing that inspires me to work on my own writing.
The new insight/characterization of Ellen and the cat is fascinating. It makes the latter’s encouragement in the game come off as a lot more foreboding in hindsight.
I’m somewhat relieved it came out so long after the initial release of the RPG because I would have been way too young for a manga that’s this level of violent at the age that I was at the time. I’m not actually sure why it took me so long to realize it was out but I snatched it up immediately at my local library when I spotted it.
Now, if an Ib manga ever comes out, I can die happy between it and this.
I'd like to say the disturbing parts of this book made me want to put it down, but being honest I really love these kind of stories. Ellen just wanted to be loved. Her Dad neglected her and it seems as though her mother grew tired of having to care for her sickly child. So when offered power by a black cat she doesn't hesitate nor ask questions. The story gets dark! but even when Ellen began to do questionable things I cant help but feel bad for her. All she wanted was to be loved! I also hear this is based on a game... it's captivating, dark bloody and just an engaging story of a little girl willing to do anything to be granted the love she's always craved.
One of the few RPG horror games (or actually any game) that I finished everything and all endings. This manga follows the story from Ellen's perspective, filling in the blanks left in her diary in the game.
A creepy start, but nothing unbelievably amazing, especially if you know the game.
3☆ Warnings for murder, neglect, body horror, animal cruelty/death, kidnapping, mutilation, implied rape(? still not sure), and probably more that I am forgetting
I need to read a happy story after back to back stories like this.....
this is based off an older indie horror game and probably shouldve stayed that way. art is relatively nice overall, the story itself isn't a terrible concept, but the execution is lackluster at best. too much tell don't show/exposition and cringey dialog. neither of which is great in a manga format.
probably just play the game or watch some playthroughs on YouTube instead 🤷🏻♀️ it's the same name (without the diary of Ellen subtitle) & made in rpg maker. I'd recommend manlybadasshero's channel or markiplier.
Ellen, a girl who has a hideous sickness, makes a deal with a cat that eats souls.
I'm disappointed to see that this story is complete in two volumes as I tend to enjoy stories that can reach and stretch over multiple volumes. This one is creepy, which I like, with some good dark art. Ellen is almost (but not quite) a character you can sympathize with, at least until she realizes exactly what her deal required and she decides to go all in.
I'm so very excited and happy with this. Taking older, loved games and making them into manga or novels is genius. I love, absolutely love to read the whole series! It makes me hope that they'll do the same for Misao, Mad Father, Ib, and others! This story is the dark, but if you know the games, than this is a perfect addition, and a perfect revival of the beloved game.
A nice introduction to a different horror concept. Even though it had some cool artwork it lacked the creepy vibes I was expecting, being a little bit more sad than actual horror. However, will for sure read volume two and find out more about Ellen. Nice character but hopefully it will show more character development in the second volume.
This felt longer than it should’ve been. They could’ve delivered the story with just as much impact, it being more short and concise.
I should note that I’ve already played the game before and was recommended to read this prologue. Finally done beating around the bush and getting into it.
>> I think I would’ve liked this better when I read it during its prime. <<<
grew up around the game same as Mad Father, IB, and Yumi Niki. So when i found out that this was turnd in to a manga I couldn't wait to get my hands on it and was lucky enough to get it as a gift from a great friend.
Definitely creepy. Great Halloween read so far. A sick little girl being bamboozled to be a witch by a little black cat after killing her parents. Definitely dark. I'm confused about why there was xxxxed instead of killed a few times and then unedited half way through. 🤷

Gory and psychologically...well, let's say it shows a view how twisted someone's version of right and wrong can be and what lengths a person will go through for what they desire. Didn't realize it was a continuing series. Will read the next volume to see how this series develop.
1.5 stars. I didn't know this was a video game tie in when I requested it from the library. Maybe if I had I'd have liked it more, but as is it's a trite, boring, darkness for darkness's sake attempt at a horror story.
This book was amazing. I am a little biased as a fan of the game too, but I love how we get to see more of where Ellen comes from. I feel bad for her, but at the same time it is hard to knowing what she eventually becomes at the end! The pacing was also amazing. I was not bored for one second.

Weirdly dark and twisted and I want to keep reading so I can find out what the cat's deal is. He just gives off a vibe similar to cheshire cat, but morr sinister...
