Gerri began writing lesbian romance as a way to amuse herself while snowed in one winter in the mountains of Colorado, and hasn’t looked back. Her first published work came in 2000 with One Summer Night. Many more romances have followed, with the occasional murder mystery in the mix.
Gerri’s love of nature and of being outdoors usually makes its way into her stories as her characters often find themselves in beautiful natural settings. When she isn’t writing, Gerri and her longtime partner, Diane, can be found at their home in East Texas, where their vegetable garden, orchard, and five acres of woods keep them busy. They share their lives with an ever-changing cast of furry friends.
Her favorite pastimes include camping, hiking, birdwatching (though she insists she doesn’t wear funny hats yet!), photography, and cooking. She collects things nature offers, like an unusual pinecone, colorful rocks, or an abandoned bird feather. Dawn is her favorite time of day, the moment right before sunrise...
"I love the morning... the beginning of a brand new day. Because even things that we know are unattainable flutter within our grasp. In the early morning—at that cusp of a new day—everything is possible."

A very sad and painful story but yet so romantic at the same time. Gerri Hill has this talent of making you feel so connected to her characters and for me she’s an author that never fails me with any of her books!
My rating is 4 only because the ending felt very rushed to me, but the first 90% of the book is a solid 5..

Every time I finish one of her books I say to myself “I need to read more Gerri Hill!”. She is one of the Ur-mütter of lesfic afterall, an example of excellence many new authors strive for.

The Cottage was first published in 2007 and so it perfectly fits to cover my first contribution to fallback Friday (on a Sunday… ah well).

The novella has aged well. For a 12-year old story it read like it could have been published last year. (Bella did reissue it in 2017 but I read the original publication).

The story itself is bittersweet. Two married women with teen-age kids feel a growing attraction towards each other. Hill writes the progression from friendship to love very organically and believable. We know from the first chapter that things are going to end in drama but the love these two women have is beautiful. Keep your hanky ready because you’re going to shed some tears.

f/f explicit, but not in your face

Themes: fallback Friday, feeding the ducks, trapped in a loveless marriage, invisible, I’m straight but gay for you, a refuge at the lake, soulmates.

This is not an easy listen, but it's a beautiful one. I read this book more than a decade ago but it wasn't at all familiar to me. Many may stop listening after chapter one because the story begins in the present time and their story is told in flashback. There is no surprise ending here, but it's a journey worth taking. I've read nearly everything Gerri Hill has ever published and this story is completely unlike any of her others. This is something she would probably never write today - for many reasons - but I'm glad she did then. It's one of those that makes you think and perhaps, reflect.
I'm not giving anything away here (it's in the blurb) that these two women are married with families when they meet by happenstance, both to men. Fate brings them together, if you will. When I was younger, I had very definite ideas of how I would behave if certain relationship situations came up. I would be THIS way in a relationship. I would ALWAYS do things this way. I would NEVER do that. Would I ever "cheat" on anyone? Absolutely never. I remember watching the movie Fatal Attraction so many years ago and thought, "That's so unrealistic. Why the hell would anyone have an affair with Glenn Close when you're married to Anne Archer?!?" Then later I was in a committed relationship with an "Ann Archer" and realized things aren't always what they appear to be. Nobody knows what happens behind closed doors or what kind of pain people might be in. So your perspective changes and you realize there really are no black and whites. You don't know how you would behave in any given situation unless you experience it for yourself.
So while this is a quick listen at four hours, it gives you lots of food for thought. Abby Craden narrates it beautifully, as she does with many of Gerri's books. This won't be everyone's cup of tea. Some people are very particular about what they want or expect from love stories. But I feel it's a worthwhile addition to Gerri's catalog, and was moved by it. In fact, I'm off to think about it some more. 4.5 stars
*Should you decide to comment and are familiar with the story, I would appreciate it if you would avoid spoilers. Thanks!*

Review of The Cottage by Gerri Hill, Audiobook narrated by Abby Craden
Gerri Hill has such an extensive back catalogue that she’s often releasing new audiobooks to the glee of her readers. Bonus points for choosing narrator Abby Craden for many of them, such as in this case. Unfortunately, I cannot say that I enjoy this one as much as others of the Hill/Craden partnership.

Jill and Carrie are two married women with teenage children who meet by chance and forge a close friendship. As time goes by, they realise that they are attracted to each other and that the pull is stronger than their marriages and families…

This is a bit of an atypical work for Gerri Hill and I feel like I need to give some warning to potential readers/listeners. First of all, it’s a novella and secondly, it’s not a typical romance. Even though there is a romantic liaison, I would put this book more in the literary fiction category. To avoid disappointment don’t expect the typical traits of romance and the satisfaction that comes with it. This book will probably break your heart.

I have to also warn readers about a potential trigger in the form of infidelity. The characters are morally grey, far from perfect and virtuous. Their hesitations and doubts make them more real but, at the same time, less relatable and likeable. Also, maybe because of the short length of the story, the mains chemistry was lacking.

As usual in Ms. Hill’s work, nature and the outdoors is very present as the background to the story, though, maybe because of its short length, not extensively. The secondary characters feel a bit flat and stereotyped as well. The ending feels a bit rushed too and some parts on the unrealistic side.

Thanks to her usual talented narration, Abby Craden makes the story much better but it’s still not enough to make it more than average. As always, her voices are distinct and her performance of the emotions is fantastic but there’s so much a narrator can do with the written text. If you are new to Gerri Hill’s audiobooks, I would start elsewhere. 3.5 stars.

The end was literally written in the beginning! I knew how it was going to end ffs! So why was I hiccuping through tears close to the end??? I don’t know!

Not for the faint hearted. This is my most recommended book of all time because it is in my opinion the greatest emotional titillater I’ve encountered. It’s a very simple premise but the author knew how to conduct a reader’s heart into a symphony of racked emotions. I would even go so far as to claim even a rock would acquiesce to bleeding with this story.

This book highlights the difference in writing styles by generation of writers. The older writers, in my opinion, were bolder and basically didn’t shy away from main characters not having stellar morals. They called a spade a spade, dug their hole and slept in it. Most writers nowadays wouldn’t dream of such potential for their MCs. I miss the brashness of writers not afraid of having imperfect MCs.

This was a perfect book for me. I could relate to it so well. But man, it has a very sad ending even though you know it’s coming from the first chapter

4 Stars - Audiobook version

Gerri Hill is always good, and this book is no exception. I loved the leads and their quick and intense connection. The themes are tough in this one, and I had some mixed feelings about the infidelity. However, it was hard not to want to excuse/look past it because of the soulmate connection found. Be ready with the tissues because the end is a real tearjerker.

4 Stars for The Cottage (audiobook) by Gerri Hill read by Abby Craden.

Fate kind of brings these two women together at just the right time in their lives. One needs a change and the other can see that the end is near. Their love is short but ultimately life changing.

Oh Gosh !!!

How on earth can a novella be very painful , sad (try heartbreaking) & yet so beautiful, romantic, erotic and even funny (sometimes) at the same time ???

Of course I can't relate (at all) to the "married with kids & a pain in the rear as mother-in-law" mature woman thing but I felt deeply connected to the characters nonetheless ... Seriously, IDK how she does such a thing but, beside writting masterly in different (not always easy) genres (pure romance, cops story, etc..). Gerri Hill has, no matter the genres in which you include her stories, this very gift to always make you feel a (sometimes very deep) connection to the characters … For me it happens all the time. This author is among the few who never fail me with any of their books …

Even if the the first 90% of the book deserve a very solid 5 stars rating, my final final rating is 4 stars because :
° the ending was too rushed. At least for my own taste …
° this horrendous ornithological detail most people don’t care about : feeding ducks 🦆🦆 (or any other kind of birds BTW) with bread …For God (and the birds)’s sake : Stop doing this people !!! => Giving bread to them is the best way to poison ( = kill) them !!! Do I really need to say that it would have been great to see the MC feed their beloved ducks with the appropriate food ??

Enjoy (or not) your reading guys and gals …

This is my 26th book by Gerri Hill. I was reluctant to read this book because it is affair between two married woman with kids. But, I was wrong judging it without reading! This story is so painful from beginning to end.
Every full time working mom has the problem spending time with family, in this case Jill is working from 8-5 pm but not everyone is this lucky and its also quite common that everyone is quick to blame this is kind of mothers as an irresponsible parent. Its story about loneliness, longing, love, loosing, finding oneself..... this is a very sad book..In my whole life I never cried so much over a book that too this simple quick read book. How sad and unbearable may be it is for the readers the ending was highly appropriate giving the circumstances. The author wanted Jill to find herself and it came through one sweet dream- Carrie. Its a great love story with sad ending but still deserves 5/5 and definitely worth number of reads if you are in a mood to cry!

Now this is how you write a novella. Hill does an impressive job drawing the reader into the lives of Jill and Carrie and gives them an uber romantic spot for us to watch their relationship develop. Getting out of a marriage that is not a good fit is never easy and the author does a good job of showing the ripples that an affair can have in the lives of the immediate family as well as those around them.

The Cottage lost a star when the ending turned into a fifties lesbian pulp fiction tale, but I still enjoyed the ride.

A pleasure to read.

4.5. This was a tough book to listen to. It was emotional and raw. Maybe it was hard because of how realistic it seemed. I’m not really sure. I wanted it to be a full length novel. I feel like a lot more could have been done with the ending and it left a lot to be desired. I did enjoy the love they shared. Also, it does give you plenty warning from the beginning of how it will end.

This one delivered one hell of a sucker punch! It is told in reverse so you already know how it’s going to end, I thought with this being the case, there wouldn’t be much of an emotional impact at the end, about that I was wrong.

Meeting one day in a park Jill and Kerry strike up a friendship. An instant connection, both of them have husbands and children but they can’t deny that what they are feeling for each other is more than friendship!

Even though you discover the sucker punch of a twist early on, I don’t want to reveal to much about the story, over than to say I cried many tears towards the end!

I didn't think I would enjoy this one as much as I did, given the way it starts (minor spoiler: it does not end happily). I love to see an organic development of a friendship and subsequent relationship so while this was short, it was very enjoyable for me.

I couldn’t put this down which was a little amazing considering I reluctantly picked this read up as stories with extramarital affairs make me anxious. This was an angsty, painful read, and as I was reading this in my bed, at one point, I adjusted my position to sit up, feeling such an ache in my breast, I was certain I would weep at the ending. However, it’s so masterfully composed that I was actually a tiny bit comedically relieved though a couple of tears did gather in my eyes. My heart’s still in my throat and it’s going to take a little while to come down.

I wanted to like this book because I have enjoyed Gerri Hill’s books before, and of course it was narrated by the amazing Abby Craden, but this one just wasn’t for me. I didn’t find myself liking any of the characters and I hated most of the side characters. So few of them had any redeeming qualities. Jill’s husband, daughter, mother-in-law…they just weren’t great people and I hated all the family dynamics. Jill and Carrie did have a connection and their story was both beautiful and heartbreaking. It was well written, I just couldn’t get into it. Story aside though…Abby’s narration was fantastic as always!

Firstly this is a story about an affair. It is nice that the author trys to fancy it up by saying that a force pushed them together, but an affair is an affair.

The story focuses mostly on Jill and is told from her perspective. She is the stereotypical straight woman who married out of college to some guy she thought she could change. Then she had a kid because that was what she was meant to do. Now fast forward fourteen years and she dislikes her husband and dislikes her kid and drinks too much wine. She's not exactly a likeable character, but she's definitely the stereotypical "working unfulfilled mother."

Carrie has a happier more fulfilled life. She loves her kids and she's content in what she does. She and her husband aren't romantic because of his work and they're both indifferent with that. The author delves very little into Carrie's true feelings or motives throughout the story.

The love story itself is beautiful and I enjoyed it. It is why I gave the book such a high rating despite the large red flag of cheating and the smaller red flag of annoying stereotypical woman who never wanted to be a mom but is character. The slow roll of Jill and Carrie's relationship is beautifully written and even made me tear up towards the end.

Overall definitely worth the read though I wish authors could write queer love stories where the characters weren't such morally bad people.

Okay… soo I don’t think i’m a romance novel type of person. Just thought i’d give it a shot. Anyways, I really dislike Jill. I found her extremely unlikeable. She literally shamelessly had an affair with some random woman she met in a park while she had a husband and daughter at home. Yeah, it was sad that Carrie kicked the bucket, but I was never rooting for their relationship to be honest. I didn’t like Jill and Craig together either but her family deserved better. #JusticeforCraig. ALSO. She said she hated teenagers and that was just enough reason to stop trying to work on her relationship with her daughter?? WHAT?? This woman infuriates me. AND THEN SHE NEVER TOLD HER HUSBAND THE TRUTH. Like Craig wasn’t even that bad of a guy. He even tried to listen to Jill and did everything in his power to try and salvage their marriage. Jill was just like nah it’s not gonna work bro. Seemed like all she could think about was how terrible her life was and how much she wanted to be scissor sisters with Carrie. GET A GRIP WOMAN. she’s like boohoo I wish I was making out with Carrie right now. Okay i’m done now. But yeah that’s how I feel.

I liked it, but not as much as Sierra City. I thought the author took the easy way often. The theme of destiny was too present for my taste.
We have two women, who so far have been hetero and married, suddenly fall for one another for... well, we don't quite know why they fall in love. No unrequited feelings, nope, they're just that lucky to have had their gay epiphany at the same time, same location.
I'm not sure whether I liked the first chapter. On the one hand I didn't get too attached to the character, but on the other it's a bit heavy.

The Cottage by Gerri Hill
5/5 stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

I couldn’t write a review yesterday; I wouldn't have seen what I was typing through the tears. Books don’t usually move me to tears so easily; this one will stay with me.

I was very grateful for chapter one, indicating the sad outcome; I couldn’t have handled the ending otherwise.

The storyline brings Jill and Carrie together on a chance meeting during Jill’s lunch break in the park. Their friendship blossoms as they spend an hour a day together, but the weekends are lonely. Both women are 40+, married to men with teenage children. This familiarity brings them closer as they are both living in loveless marriages. They both have something missing in their lives, but they can fill the void with each other’s love.

I felt like I wanted the book to be longer so that Jill and Carrie had more time together, but like their relationship, it ended far too quickly. If only life could have brought them together years earlier. 💔 If you believe in soulmates, then this book is for you.

The Cottage is a ff contemporary romance between two women who both had husbands and teen-aged kids. It was was an emotional book but really good. I really felt for main character Jill. I wish she could have gotten a happily ever after and I would have liked a bit more of what happens next. This was a fairly quick listen at 4 hours and 2 minutes. The narration was good. I would listen to this again.
