It’s hard loving someone from afar, but she’s not ready. She’s not ready to know how I truly feel.

To some, Poppy is nothing but a pushover, a shy girl with a traumatic past. But not to me. I see her. I see the woman behind the mask. Her quiet strength and her fight to survive. It’s beautiful—she’s beautiful.

I’ll do anything to gain her trust and to earn her love, but I know it will come at a cost. While I serve my term in the military, our relationship will be tested. It won’t be easy, but I’m willing to take the chance—a chance on us.

I just pray she’ll be strong enough to survive it, and that I don’t end up losing the only girl I’ve ever loved.

This was.....Nice.
It’s nowhere mentioned that it’s a Christian Romance.
I have never read Christian romance before.
But this was surprisingly nice.

Poppy is the Cinderella, with evil stepsister. The evil sister has scarred her mentally. Poppy is broken, lonely, fragile with zero confidence. Her father is useless.
But this Cinderella has a prince, Reid
I love REID.
He is a dream guy. An Angel.
He is smitten and devoted to Poppy.
Since he came in her life Poppy feels protected and cared.
But the thing is that Reid is supposed to serve out his year in the Army.
So now who will protect her while he is away for one year.

Touching

This book had my curiosity from the very beginning. Poppy is 12 years old and is being dropped off at her dad's after spending the weekend with her mother. They wish they can spend more time together but Poppy's dad won't allow it. Hey plan that in six more years, they can spend all their time together. When Poppy goes inside, her father drops a bomb stating that he is getting married and the lady has a daughter her age. He expects Poppy to accept her as a sister. Poppy isn't happy and starts to go upstairs when the doorbell rings. It is a cop stating that Poppy's mom has been in an accident. The book next picks up ten years later. She is with her best friend Rachel, who is waiting for her brother Reid. Poppy has become extremely introverted and stammers when she talks. They all make plans for the movies and on the way out, Reid tells Poppy that he sees her. It freaks her out because she has never really had any interaction with Reid. She has only ever thought of him as an older brother. Reid has always known that Poppy is the girl for him. He strongly feels that God made her for him. He just has to convince Poppy that they belong together. The more time they spend together, the more that Reid is able to draw Poppy out of her shell. He's very protective of her but he just wishes that she would completely listen to him and believe what he has to say about her instead of letting her step-sister get into her head. Reid is being sent overseas for a year and worries what is going to happen to Poppy while he is gone. He prays to God to watch over her while he is gone. After Reid is deployed, Poppy is sad but knows that when he comes back, they will be building a life together. Not long after Reid leaves, the unspeakable happens to Poppy and she doesn't let anyone know what happened. Because of what happened to her, Poppy can't handle it anymore. She can't understand why God would allow something like that happen to her. When Rachel discovers Poppy, she is distraught and Skype Reid to let him know. He flies back but is upset that Poppy didn't have enough faith in him or God. Poppy finally comes to a decision on what to do with her life and seeks help. She not only seeks help mentally, but also spiritually. I liked the message that this book gives but at the same time, it gives out confusing info on how to deal with Gavin. It is nice to see a love blossom without there having to be sex involved.

Charges should have been filed.

I don't usually leave reviews but felt the need to on this story due to the storyline. The rapist got off. He needed to be turned in along with the stepsister and both charged. I'm all for forgiveness but not allowing a rapist and his accomplice possibly doing it again.

Unbelievable…. totally unbelievable. There simply is no redeeming value in this book. A rapist is free to rape again. Colluders pay no price for their participation in the crime(s). And what is going on with Poppy’s so-called dad? How could he be all so loving and supportive to the second wife and stepdaughter while turning a blind eye to his real daughter’s abuse for YEARS? Also, what was going on between Poppy’s dad and her mother? Why did the dad have all that control over Poppy and his ex-wife? We’ll never know because the storyline leaves all this out while rambling on and on about how insignificant Poppy feels? We get it, she has low self-esteem, but why keep rambling on about it. Instead we NEED storyline depth and development of characters and their behavior.

This book has all kinds of problems. It makes no sense. Poppy’s suicide note told of the rape. There would have been legal ramifications… not a mere ‘talking too’ by the fiancé warning Gavin never to talk to Poppy again. Give me a break! Also, Gavin never would have gotten off the first time he tried to force Poppy. When taken to the hospital, she would have been in shock. Witnesses, especially the boy who pulled Gavin off her, would have been interviewed. Gavin would have been interrogated. NONE of that happened.

Also, Stephanie and whoever was involved in the ‘setup’ would have been held accountable legally. If a person robs a bank and someone ends up ki11ed, the person driving the getaway car is just as liable as the ki11er. That’s how American law works.

👁OBSERVATIONS

Poppy’s Dad: Why have him walk her down the aisle? He gave her away years ago, no need to giver her away now. He kept her from her mother and ignored all the mistreatment she was getting in his own home, right under his nose. Why were Diane and Stephanie more important to him? And what was Diane’s role in all this? I don’t remember reading she was blind.

What discussion or confrontation took place in that household after they were put in their place and accosted by Reid about Poppy’s mistreatment? We’ll never know since it’s not mentioned.

Poppy: My heart went out to her. I can understand how she kept everything buried inside. She felt worthless and K NEW no one cared in her home. That was suppose to be her safe place but it was just another torture chamber. After her ongoing abuse, how could she trust anyone?

Reid: Thank goodness for Reid (also Rachel) Reid truly was Poppy’s protector. I didn’t understand his ‘talking to’ Gavin and thinking that was all that was needed. He didn’t need to go all Rambo on Gavin but just telling him to never look at Poppy again was pretty laughable.

Poppy’s Mom and Dad: What happened between her parents? Why the divorce? Why all the control and animosity with the dad? He proves he doesn’t care for Poppy throughout the book, so why keep her from her mother? Then he could have doted on the stepmom and stepsister all he wanted. Also, why didn’t the mother fight for Poppy? She knew Poppy was very unhappy.

Gavin: What is up with him? What is his background? There’s a big difference between being a bully and being evil? What he did, with Stephanie’s help, was evil …. both times. How was he allowed to do the things he did? Did he even know or care about the suicide attempt? If written properly, law enforcement would have made sure Gavin knew.

Stephanie: She confessed in the hospital visit that her abuse of Poppy was ‘just for fun’… we were just having a little bit of fun is what she said. No, she was like the getaway car driver…. she was involved up to her elbows in at least two crimes. So it’s okay to forgive her and visit her…. when she’s behind prison bars alongside Gavin.

Forgiving doesn’t remove justice. David was a man after G_d’s own heart but he paid and suffered the consequences for his actions.
