Twenty ships have left the gravitational field of the Earth with the intention of colonizing Mars. Each is independent of the other and set to become domed cities upon landing. The mission is simple: go forth to develop the new planet, make it an extension of our home. Well, it sounded simple.
No one expected life on Mars to be easy, they are pioneers and that is a type of life that comes with dangers. What they didn’t expect was for the settings of one of the ships to be off enough to miss their landing, to miss the very planet they were meant to settle.
Even more astounding was to find another planet within a three-week travel period that lies in the shadow of the red planet. It is where they will land, where their ship will unfold to become a domed city. Where life is dangerous in a hostile land and they find unexpected help. The indigenous winged people of the planet don’t live on the surface of the planet, they live in cities in the clouds, but they are willing to extend a welcoming hand to those who have come to their land, as well as teach them what they can to survive. Their relationship begins with three words.
First Contact by M.A. Abraham is the 1st book in her new Tantalus series. This is a Sci-Fi story that has space traveling, romance, mystery, new planet, new species, and interesting world-building. The premise of this story is to introduce us to the two species that will come together by the end, leading the way to a world that will co-exist between humans and Tantalarians, who look human, but they have wings.
But to get there is what First Contact is all about. We meet the humans on a huge space ship with 50,000 people traveling to Mars, where they will live. A few ships have already landed on Mars, working hard to make it livable for humans. Immediately, we learn that the ship has gone off course, with the Captain and his team unable to fix the issue, which means they will miss their landing to Mars. Surprisingly, they see an unknown planet only weeks away, where they will be able to land. The Captain also learns that one of his lieutenants has some physic ability, and was the one whom the planet contacted to let her know they will help them reach their planet. We learn early on that there are a few others, who are also physic. Cara, and her children have tried to hide their physic ability, because they fear for their lives. It seems there are a group of hostiles that have secretly killed those that are physic, as they feel they are witches. Yes, it does have the similarity to Salem. The captain becomes involved in the mystery to find out who is the leader of the group determined to stop the ship from reaching the new planet.
While this is going on with the humans on the ship, there is also another main storyline of the people of Tantalus. Our heroes here are Karia and Mitchel, who are destined to be mates, thereby changing the rules in Tantalus that was led astray many years ago by corrupt men, who wanted to rule the women. With the help of her mother, and the other Phoenix from the past, Karia will be the strongest women, who will bring back the old glory. It is Karia who was able to warn the ship and help guide them to Tantalus. The main story here is the revolution to stop the corrupt rulers, and the hot romance between Karia and Mitchel.
There is a lot of action, romance, and steamy sex going on in both stories. Telling too much more would be spoilers, but each storyline was very well done.
M.A. Abraham has given us another wonderful imaginative new series. First Contact gives us a new race, The Tantalarians and an exciting adventure that will keep us hooked until the very end. This is a different and exciting story, with some wonderful characters. Abraham has built this world that has us looking forward to see what happens next, as they begin to work together. I can’t wait for the next book, Integration.
First Contact Tantalus, Book 1 By: M.A. Abraham Narrated by: Brian Callanan This is an audible book I requested and the review is voluntary. I really enjoyed this book! It has two stories going on at one time. One story is of the ship and occupants traveling to Mars, but they end up missing Mars and find a planet that is hidden somehow magically behind Mars. There is murders and intrigue going on during the trip on the ship. The other story is on the Planet Tantalus where the ship is heading to. There is just as much trouble is happening there. Great suspense, fantasy, science fiction, romance, mystery, well developed characters, and world building. Loved the plot development and how the two stories weave together. The narrator was wonderful at building emotions, suspense, romance, and perfect for all kinds of voices. Enjoyed it as if I was watching a movie! Loved it! Can't wait to follow up with book 2!
This is a new interesting series. The second series written by this author. Elven Chronicles maybe my favorite but this Sci/Fi fantasy series may become my second. First Contact is a very exciting and detailed book that explained this new world Tantalus. It started with six ships that left Earth to join the ships in Mars to colonize but these six ships went off course due to faults in equipment. One of the ships called Noah's Ark noticed the problem immediately after one of the members But it was too late. The captain and the crew member didn't heed the warning and thought they were suffering because of the amount of time they were in the space. In another part of the book, we get to see the planet Tantalus and it's people. Mitchell and Karia are the main hero and heroine in this book. They brought huge changes in their own world and changed their way of life by bringing the right way back. Tantalus may look like humans but they are winged and their females are special because The winged people live in cities in the cloud and not on the surface. The planet is buzz with activities, preparing for the arrival of these ships and are aware of the dangerous humans in the ships that called themselves "witch-hunters" The ending was spectacular as the Humans received a welcoming show from the winged people in the planet. This book contains many details on Tantalus and what to expect from both species. This series is a little darker than the Elven Chronicles but it still has the same light. Next book will be fun to read as we will see the interaction between the humans and the winged people.
First let me say I recieved this book as a review copy, and what a great gift it was! I may or may not post spoilers.
This a in depth book about deep space travel and the possibility that aliens do live on other planets. Now, that being said this is also a mystery about Salem witches and the hunt for them. What a GREAT concept!
This gives you a realistic look at what if you could take a space ship and turn it into a living city for those who want a brand new start on a new planet. You have murder, mystery, love, hate, and so much more wrapped up in this book.
People you do not expect to be "bad" could be. You have someone who can and will kill without notice. Over all even as this is not normally a Book I would enjoy I have to say this was VERY enjoyable for me to read so much so I could NOT put it down till I finished it!
I can not wait till the next installment of the book comes out to read it! A keeper for sure.
Tantalus is an exciting new world from one of my fave author, filled with suspense, space travel, witch hunters, landing on an unknown planet and meeting the indigenous species, add a dash or ten of romance makes for excellent reading. Loved this scifi story, Michael and Karia are so well matched and their joining is explosive. Again, I am amazed of the easy way Ms. Abraham pulled me into the story and kept me there throughout the book, the way the parallel story of the Earth spaceship's journey on the way to Mars is woven with the happenings on Tantalus! Looking forward to reading the next one.
The Queen of Elves, M.A. Abraham has started a new Sci-Fi series in which two species will hopefully co-exist together. The Humans and the Tantalarians who look like us but have wings.
50,000 people leave Earth on the Noah's Arc ship to live on Mars. Something goes wrong - the coordinates are wrong and they can't override the computer to correct it. Seems instead of going to Mars they are on their way to another planet that no one even knew existed. From different testing it seems it will be compatible for them. Capt. Tremont learns his Lt. Noble has psychic abilities and is in contact with an alien woman from the planet. They are communicating through their minds and the alien realizes they are in trouble. They will help all they can to bring the ship safely to their planet. Since leaving Earth, quite a few people are showing psychic abilities. There is the widow Cara and her daughter Adele who are psychics and Adele is a very strong one. They are also in contact with the alien and they seem to be a peaceful race. It seems that there are witch hunters aboard the ship and they are killing the psychics because they believe the psychics to be witches. Capt. Tremont has his hands full between trying to find out who the witch hunters are, who their leader is that is trying to sabotage the ship from reaching the planet and trying to figure out how they are going to land.
The planet is Tantalus and Karia and Mitchel are the main characters. Karia is the alien woman who has been in contact with the ship. She and Mitchel will be mates. Things on the planet are going to change after so long being under old corrupt Counsel, who kept the women subservient and who kept the women from choosing their true mates instead of mating for political reasons. The Tribunal has made their appearance and has told the old Counsel they and their ancestors have lost their way and have been corrupted and things will change. There will be a new and younger Counsel and Mitchel will be the Head Counsel. Things will get back to normal, woman will choose their own mates. There will be a lot of changes to the planet itself due to the rising of the Phoenix's which is in each woman and will be set free again. They will bring back the planet to it's original glory. The hot romance between Karia and Mitchel is sizzling!
What a fantastic start to this new series. Awesome storyline, charismatic characters, action, mayhem and romance. I loved this book and so highly recommend it. Can't wait to read the next one to see what adventure awaits the humans.
I have to start out this review with a confession. Well, two confessions.
Confession "numero uno": I did not finish this book. If I am honest with you, it would be more accurate to say, I _could not_ finish this book. I had to tap out about 4 hours into it. This is not something that happens to me often, especially on audiobooks. I can usually muster through, focus on the things I like and gloss over things that I do not like.
Which brings me to confession number two: I really dislike giving negative reviews. I mean I will give a low rating, but I typically do not spend the time writing out an actual review. However I commited to reviewing this book in exchange for a free copy. I was tempted to just take the easy way out and write a brief review that stated "This book just wasn't for me". Then I took a peek at the other positive reviews on Audible and thought "what am I missing?" as they are all positive. I also looked up the Author and noticed that she has a decent amount of other works, with similar followings. So I figured that I should just be honest.
So buckle up. I will be honest, but that doesn't mean I cannot try and be constructive and civil. I will first go into the issues I have with this book, and follow up with the positive things I have to say about the book. So here we go.
OK, I lied again. I feel I do need to say one positive thing first. I have to give much props to the narrator, Brian Callanan. If it were not for him I do not think I would have gotten 1/10th as far as I did. His excellent narration does so much, even for this book. I have listened to other books of his and he does a great job narrating. If I am ever able to finish a book I hope to someday have him narrate it. I highly recommend checking him out. Perhaps in a different book though. Now on with it...
To start off, this book is pitched as Sci-Fi. I guess it qualifies as it technically does have space ships, and alien races. But that's about where it ends. To call this "soft sci-fi" would even be pusing it. There is simply zero science involved in this at all. Even without explaining the technology, there are things about this book that just baffle me. The Captian of the ship uses the term "some sort of space effect" to describe a possible mental breakdown of one of the ships officers when she hears voices. I mean they have tests for "paranormal talent", but not for say... schizophrenia? This type of thing is just repeated constantly, no explanations except for "because space..." Then there are scenes where the Captain directly addresses the civilians onboard the ship, and they speak to him like they are peers and nobody seems bothered by this.
Somehow, despite the (undescribed in any way) technology to launch twenty space ships towards Mars, the Human ships are on a course to *completely* miss the planet. Nobody on the _twenty_ ships double checked this "math" and noticed this? They only discover this when one member of the crew gets a psychic message from and alien race. Then when they try and change course, they somehow cannot change it. The computer simply will not let them. No override, no taking the computers offline, no debugging, nothing. Also, despite the technology to build twenty colony ships capable of reaching Mars, somehow humanity has completely overlooked another planet "hiding behind Mars"? As a fan of science fiction these things really bothered me, but I could have overlooked it if it was the biggest issue I had with this book.
Moving on to characters. I was really bothered by how pretty much every male character was written in this book. Especially the humans. They all appear to have the mentality and personality of a sterotypical high-school football quarterback. The Captain begins oogling the breasts of a civilian upon the instant he sees her, then ends up sleeping with her. The scene in which this happens is just so poorly written, and literally describes how addicted the female is going to become to the Captiain because he is just so amazing at the sex. Seriously. Then, immediately afterwards The Cap has the same bragfest conversations with pretty much every other male member of his crew afterwards and then tells them he is going to marry this woman, after one single encounter and without even discussing any sort of relationship with the actual person who he plans on marrying. The crew then each tell the Captain how every other male on the ship wants to get with this woman but she is just such a hard catch. Another scene where a image of one female member of the alien race (we will get to them later) is shown to the entire ship, and some teenage males make crude comments like "If they all look like that I would love to score me one of those!" These scenes litterally made me cringe.
The writing style of the book was very simplistic. Every single book, article, or class on writing will tell you the same thing: Show don't tell. While I often understood what they were saying it always confused me why they always made such a deal out of it, now I know why. The biggest issue I had with this book was it constantly told me things, but never showed them to me. It left me having to take the word of the author that Lt. Noble is very brave, or that the Captain is very respected and commanding. Because it NEVER showed me any evidence of these things. It literally just said them.
Overall, I think that some of the ideas in this book have potential. The Alien bird people were entirely more interesting and I would like to know more about them and thier storyline. Unfortunately, everything about the human storyline was just too much for me to continue and eventually I knew the two would combine and just ruin it. I feel that if the Humans were made to be another race or from another planet that may have been better. Better yet, just rip them out completely and focus on Tantalus.
**I recieved a free copy of this audiobook from the author/narrator/publisher in exchange for an honest review. **
Mary Ann has created a wonderful new world . How wonderful it would be to have wings to fly. Tantalus is a world on the verge of a new era and with the arrival of humans from Earth it will be very interesting to see where this goes. Mitchell and Karia are a very hot couple and their final coming together was a steamy read. I loved the Captain of the Starship Noah's Arc and his lady Cara . Theirs was a wonderful story too. All of the secondary characters in the book were interesting and I am hoping to get their stories in future books. Mary Ann had her usual humor and surprises and kept me turning the pages Loved it.
WOW, where to begin... First off, I felt as if I was reading two stories in one (a total bonus). Both intertwined into one. Each was exciting, romantic and fun in its own way and when brought together. Total awesomeness! First Contact is a story for those readers that enjoy Sci-fi, romance and a great original story all wrapped into one amazing package! I've read quite a few of M.A. Abraham's works and find myself a happy reader in the end (and during) each and every time. I LOVE it in this woman's head! Looking forward to Integration (Book 2 of the series)!
I received a copy of this audiobook for an honest review. I apologize to the person who gave it to me because that was back near the end of January, and it somehow got mixed up in my list of audiobooks to where I only realized I was late listening to it just recently.
While I had a hard time getting through the first quarter of this story, I ended up finishing it. I can honestly state for the record that I have no clue how I finished it, to begin with. I didn’t find the story interesting, to say the least. It was different, as in a different idea/storyline from the typical books I read/listen to, but I don’t know. I found it boring, yet it somehow held my attention the majority of the time. I don’t get it. Stated in my profile paragraph, I state that I don’t like having to leave long reviews because that’s a sign the story wasn’t that good. These kinds of reviews involve lots of questions and/or comments relating to issues I found throughout said story. In this case, stuff wasn’t adding up, in my opinion. The biggest area of issue, I guess you could say, was regarding how human-like the aliens were. Yes, they can look human (with wings), but there were no fancy, new alien terms. They knew English, would say things that humans would normally say. I know there was a part of the story that mentioned how the aliens hadn’t always been on the planet. I’m imagining a backstory as them originally being humans and somehow magically ended up on a planet that the rest of mankind knew nothing about. Over the years they started growing wings or something. Yeah…anyways…
Questions/Comments: (Heads up, I don’t know how to spell any of the characters names.)
The "aliens" seemed way too friendly, was it just me? They're all eager to please the newcomers/humans and already telling their people the rules regarding having sexual relations with the humans. I thought it strange how one of the first things the humans asked the aliens was regarding the dangerous stuff on the planet. I don't know, but when I imagine a group of humans going to space, heading to another planet-Mars originally, and suddenly hearing from another life form that was previously unknown to the humans, well they didn't really seem all that shocked or surprised. There were times when they said they were surprised but never acted that way.
I probably missed this part, somehow, but why were they heading to Mars in the first place? Mitchel had been with Keria as her guardian for how long? Long time. So why when Nilor (originally betrothal) started attacking her, both verbally and then physically, did he seem to take his time before intervening. Similarly, her father didn’t even do anything. Yet, there was lots of talk throughout the story about how males never hit or are violent towards the females because they were so important. Right...
The Tantalus society was surprised(?) that their world was no longer as warm as it once was. Yet, they continued forcing their women to marry men they didn't want, knowing that the heat came from their phoenixes, which was achieved when in a life-force relationship. This goes back to my previous question regarding how important the females supposedly were. Additionally, if their society originally had the females as the "top-dogs," thousands of years prior, when and why did that ever change?
Why was Keria sad that the humans couldn't get to Mars?
One big area that I just couldn’t wrap my mind around was the fact the aliens used human terms/English? They seemed to know what specific things were. For example, they referred to intimate relations as having sex, they knew what trees were and what the air was made of. Yet, the only word that they didn’t understand was “angel.” I found it even stranger that they referred to themselves as "people." Or when the tribunal alien states that "No from the female still means no."
I'd like to know what all they had on the ship regarding their food sources. For whatever reason, it sounded weird that they'd be eating lobster.
Alina (Keria's grandmother) is supposed to be "all that" since she's a scribe, so why has the world slowly been going to sh*t and they (the tribunal/scribes) haven't come forward prior? Her grandfather states they were distracted or caught up in their work, but considering the planet has been going to crap for thousands of years…yeah…
I can't imagine there will ever be a time when discrimination against those that are different would stop. So, what was the deal with there being witch hunters on the ships and those in charge questioning that as though it couldn't possibly be true? Or specifically referring to themselves as witch hunters? What year was this story taking place in?
Was it strange that there seemed to be tons of people on Earth (now on the ships) who were telepathic? I know some of the people became telepathic while on the ship, but there seemed to be a good amount that already had the talent prior.
I thought it strange that Keria’s grandfather felt there was nothing to be ashamed of when they were barely clothed in their ceremonial wear. That’s such a human thing to say. What did they normally wear? Or when he said that the humans would appreciate the view or when he told the captain that he shouldn’t be surprised if the two species got together as in having relationships with each other. Why would the captain have been surprised by that, especially considering the alien had already said that the human females could get with the male aliens, but not vice versa?
What about the fact that neither species really knew anything about the other, yet they were both so trusting and assumed everything was going to be great?
Or when they leave the ship once the dome is down. How did the aliens get inside the dome?
Lastly, regarding my questions about the story, having just arrived on the new planet, meeting “aliens,” and knowing that they’ll be landing near dangerous water, why would Tyler have had the opportunity to wonder off?
Narrator: Overall, the narrator had a good speaking voice regarding the female and males voices he used throughout the story. My main issue with this narrator was the robotic talk. This was very obvious when he provided the voices for the Tribunal members. He was more than likely saying exactly what he was reading, so that would be a fault with the author since he/she didn’t provide the dialogue with a natural flow to it. I don't know about anyone else, but it came across as very unnatural and stuck out like a sore thumb. Usually (at least when I read something), no matter what the writing says, for example, "I am going upstairs," this would be read (whether in my head or aloud) as "I'm going upstairs." Maybe the narrator is a newbie, I don't know. But the majority of narrators I’ve listened to are sure to provide natural-flowing dialogue, whether the author helped them in that area or not.
I can understand how it might be difficult coming up with a good variety of speaking voices for the variety of males in a story. When it came to Tormac (the father of the guy originally betrothed to Keria?), the narrator spoke as though his mouth were full of spit. I don't know about anyone else, but that grossed me out hearing him speak.
The best part about this book was the narration, the story required a lot of different character voices and this was done very well, with many distinct and recognizable voices. The overall delivery was also good, it flowed well and sounded natural.
The story had promise and there are parts of it that are good, but there are so many issues that get in the way of it. This is going to contain spoilers (something I don't normally do) so move to another review if you don't want to know what happens.
1 - The humans are technologically advanced enough to colonize Mars but cannot tell the ships navigation has been mis-programed. I cannot buy this, we can already calculate the path required to read plants far away with the tech now, this will be even easier when tech is good enough for Mars colonization. This idea does not work for me.
2 - Apparently the only thing between Mars and Saturn is an asteroid belt, in this story it seems Jupiter has disappeared, surprising considering how huge that plant is.
3 - The so called dark planet gets light from the sun, therefore it must be visible from Earth at some times, and considering how closely we've studied the solar system it would have to have been found, even if considered uninhabitable.
Other things are over exaggerated like Karia's betrothed who's bad guy behavior is so extreme that it's unbelievable. In fact there is drama everywhere and while this could have made the book exciting, it was overdone and felt forced and unbelievable.
A little research into the solar system and a more realistic reason for missing Mars would have made huge improvements to this story. Overall disappointing.
I received a free copy of this book from the author and/or narrator and/or publisher and I voluntarily wrote this honest review.
5 out of 5 stars.. U have done it again.. I freaking love this book could not put it down.. It was like nothing I have ever read before.. Can't wait to read the next one.. Thank you so much for righting these AWSOME books..
First Contact, the first book in the Tantalus series is a sci-fi romance with a rich plot and captivating characters. The storyline is refreshing, takes a different approach to the introduction of humans to an alien society, advanced winged humanoids with good morals and values. M.A. Abraham is an exceptional sci-fi romance author, with the talent to build a sophisticated and advanced alien culture.
A colonizing human ship heading to Mars inadvertently veers off to the path towards an unknown planet, Tantalus. The two species will now have to learn to share a world. The question is, will old prejudices and discord allow for a peaceful co-existence?
The characters are well developed with depth to make them unique and interesting. The romance element of the story is very well written, tastefully-done, sensual, and engaging. The storyline and the characters are fascinating, and the worldbuilding is phenomenally done.
Brian Callahan's performance is utterly marvelous. He literally sucks you in and wholly absorbs you in the story. His inflections are perfectly timed, and with the ability to perform a wide range of tones, he is able to portray various characters and personalities. He is a genuine voice artist, and I absolutely relish his performances.
Overall, First Contact is a compelling story with wonderful characters, both violence and profanity are also limited. This was an enjoyable audiobook, and I highly recommend it.
Tantalus is an exciting new world from one of my fave author, filled with suspense, space travel, witch hunters, landing on an unknown planet and meeting the indigenous species, add a dash or ten of romance. Loved this scifi story, Michael and Karia are well matched and their joining is explosive. Again, I am amazed of the easy way Ms. Abraham pulled me into the story and kept my attention, the way the parallel story of the Earth spaceship's journey on the way to Mars is woven with the happenings on Tantalus! - 5 stars
Mr. Callanan really brought the story to life with passion, giving the many characters their own voice and making this an excellent listening experience. He is becoming one of my fave voices to listen to. Looking forward to listening to the next one. - 5 stars
Audio review Have it in Audio This is book 1 in the series. It’s a Sci Fi story. This is about ships leaving Earth trying to land on Mars. Somehow the ship with Cara and her children is Mars . When the earth people land they see others that look like earth people but they don’t life on the plant. They life in the clouds
This story has it all fantasy, $ex fantasy and imagination .
Brian Callanan was great as a narrator. He’s voice knew no bounds . He know how to do many characters
I loved the narration of Brian Callanan, who brings out the action, angst, suspense and the romance. Perfect.
A space ship traveling from earth to colonise Mars. A problem arises putting them off course. While on board, some members start to physic powers. So not only have they find another plant, but other members of the ships are witch hunters, looking to harm those with the new power. Find a new plant and friendly aliens. The aliens are having to fight their own battles. There is plenty of mystery and suspense, with great world building of the new planet is great, and all the character human and aliens.
WOW~~ <3 I loved this book. It was interesting, thought provoking and at the same time it was a lot of fun. I laughed, I cried, and I was excited to have a new series to get into. I also really enjoyed the narration. He definitely brought life to the story. I cant wait to start the next book.
This book was given to me at my request.(Thanx so much!! I LOVE these) I am providing a honest and voluntary review.
Oh nooo.... I just checked my audible library and while I still have book 3 and 4, I'm panicking about not having the rest. Now Im on a mission to find em!!
I love this book! I don't normally read sci-fi but am glad I gave it a chance. First Contact was well-written, has a great storyline and is very descriptive. I could easily picture the spaceship, world, and it's inhabitants in my head. Brian Callanan did an excellent job at narration. He has a great voice, was easily understood, and kept my attention. Overall a perfect for this book. I can't wait for the next to come our on audible!
I listened to this book at 1.70x Author: M.A. ABRAHAM Plot. ⭐⭐⭐ stars Story. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ stars & why I found the first 2 books to be very Star Trek like. It was like reading the first couple episodes of a Star trek show. (The next generation Or Voyager ) very Gene Roddenberry ish.
Just can't get it to book 3 right now. Tried for 2 days, just not in the mood. Maybe I'll try later to do the rest of the series.
If it were a movie it would be PG13. Heat. 🔥flames
Narrator.: BRIAN CALLAHAN
Betrayal of the story. 🥈 SILVER why: He was able to bring characters to live. Many many voices to do.
I have never read any books from M.A. Abraham and I cannot believe that I have not. This opening book to this series was very good. There are a couple of mixed reviews when it comes to this book and I do not understand why. The book keeps getting better the more you get into it. This book takes place on a ship, Noah's Arch, and on a planet, Tantalus. In the beginning there are only a few points of view but the more in-depth you get into the story the more characters points of view that you get.
When you are on the ship there are some many conflicts occurring. It seems not matter where humans tend to go they always bring their bullshit with them. There were moments where all I wanted was for the humans to crash because it seems that bigotry and the fear of the unknown will also dictate humans no matter where they go. I know that this is supposed to be fiction but this book as well as many others, shows that if humans decide to contact other worlds war and fear is the only thing that will occur. Let me got back on topic which it this story.
Tantalus is not without drama or conflict however there is a certain way things are handled on the planet that I am 100% for. The main character, Karia, is the one that first made contact with the humans and is the one that will be bringing about change. For the first part of the book when it takes place on Tantalus there are some people who are not okay with a change in status quo. They like the way things are and refuse to lose power. As the story progresses you see what happens when power and greed is the only thing that is important.
Both, Noah's Arch and Tantalus, are not perfect by any means however I do feel that they will be able to coexist in some time. This is the first Brian Callanan book that I have listened to and I have to say that I am loving it. I have certain narrators that I enjoy for Sci-Fi, Ian Gordon and David Brenin, and I have to say that Brian is on this list now. He did so well distinguishing between characters that I was super impressed by that. I cannot wait to move on to Integration to wee what happens when another ship lands.
This series has me intrigued. It’s a fresh look at humans encountering alien life. These other “people” are intelligent, have a well ordered society and good values. Oh, and they have wings! One of them telepathically warns the humans traveling on a Colony ship that they are going to miss their intended destination- Mars. We learn there is a connection between the two species and I look forward to reading more about this development. I enjoyed that the people who live on Tantalus are so welcoming to the newcomers. The humans bring old prejudices long though overcome. The people on Tantalus are not free from their own discord. What will happen as the two species attempt to share this world? The book ends with a definite lead up to the next book.
A bit more time is spent describing the sex scenes than I’d prefer, kinda along the lines of a tastefully done romance novel but not overly erotic (and I do not like romance novels). Its easy to skip these parts and move on to real story if you choose. There is no excessive violence or swearing.
I have listened to Brian Callanan read the series “The Adventures of Jason Lex” and he again puts forth an excellent narration here. He brings the correct amount of expression to the story, portrays males and females well, and brings out their personalities. I would happily listen to another story read by him.
I have not read/ listened to a book by this author before, but would gladly do so again.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and voluntarily left this unbiased review.
Have it in Audio This is book 1 in the series. It’s a Sci Fi story. This is about ships leaving Earth trying to land on Mars. Somehow the ship with Cara and her children is Mars . They don’t know what to do , where are they going to land . Cara picks up a signal (her psychic abilities have progressed hers and her children ) where there is another plant , not far from Mars. . When the earth people land they see others that look like earth people but they don’t life on the plant. They life in the clouds
This story has it all fantasy, $ex fantasy and imagination .
Brian Callanan was great as a narrator. He’s voice knew no bounds . He know how to do many characters
Great series. Loved the conflict of the people embarking on a mission to Mars. Even tho they did not land there the people adapted and evolved waiting for the next book.
"Sci fi with heavy romance/passion tones." This book was given to me free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.
This book is a good story with plenty of character development and progression. You feel connected and involved with the characters. The story moves along well without any slow sections. Even has a few twists you don't expect.
The narration is immersive and well defined with each character being unique enough that you can always distinguish between them.
However in my opinion it has heavy romance/passion that is integral to the story. This neither detracts from the story nor the experience however it was a little more than I was expecting.
Overall a good story but for me it was more romance than science fiction. I am sure that the series will be as well developed and executed as the first book.
