Kindred Souls #2

Animal Attraction

Rate this book
Detective Ethan Grainger is horrified when a public official is found dead in the park, killed by an animal. He immediately fears it’s a shifter kill and heads for The Ark, where he seeks out Nuala Lazare, a Kindred pregnant by Ethan’s late partner Shade. He’d come to terms with Chicago’s supernatural underground, but because Nuala holds him responsible for Shade’s death—and because he is attracted to her—he’s avoided her until now.

Ethan is the last man Nuala wants to see, and she has enough to deal with being near term and realizing her fatherless child will be a half-breed like her brother Luc, who experienced tremendous prejudice and guilt while growing up. She plans to move from The Ark to live like a human for her daughter.

Ethan must keep Shade’s child from being corrupted by the criminal element of the Kindred Lazare clan. Which means he must get close to Nuala—not an easy task. As they get to know each other, their attraction becomes unbearable. Will Ethan keep his loyalty to his murdered partner or succumb to the irresistible temptation of his chemistry with Nuala?

Another stunning read in the fascinating Kindred Souls series. Ethan and Nuala are strong, bold characters that easily draw readers into their story and readers can’t help but become enthralled as navigate their somewhat shaky relationship. Lots of emotional turmoil due to the events that took place in the previous book and both Ethan and Nuala have to comes to terms with the attraction that burns between them while sorting through their issues. Nuala has the loss of her baby’s daddy and the issue of where and how to raise a baby and Ethan has a major issue with what Nuala and her family are.

The plot is fast paced and keeps readers glued to their seats with lots of thrilling suspense, exciting danger and surprising twists. Ethan is not only determined to help Nuala but he is also searching for a killer only this murder pretty complicated and tied in with the Kindred. During the investigation, Ethan has several more surprises in store for him and Nuala isn’t letting him face it alone which puts her in the crosshairs of a powerful Kindred with some serious ambitions. The author has created a wonderfully surprising world with unique elements that make these shifters way more than ordinary shifters and readers can’t help but turn the pages as they become caught up in this thrilling read.

Rating: 4.5/5

This is the second book in this series and I hadn't read the first so it came as something of a surprise when I started reading it - a very pleasant surprise as I really enjoyed this paranormal romantic suspense! I found it relatively easy to understand the situation as the author's world building quickly immersed me in the suspense filled scenarios.

The Ark is the home to members of the Kindred Lazare Clan, Chicago's supernatural underworld. Most people know little or nothing of their existence, only those invited to visit the casino there are usually welcome to lose much more than their money but Detective Ethan Grainger has met members of the Clan because his partner, Shade, was in a relationship with one of them, Nuala Lazare, before he was killed. When a mutilated body is discovered in the park, Ethan is called in to investigate and he suspects the perpetrator could be someone from the Ark. His investigation reconnects him with the now very pregnant Nuala, who has always blamed Ethan for not protecting Shade and really doesn't want to see him again. This is a fast paced, intriguing investigation with paranormal dangers lurking, politics, secrets and romance as well as a baby on the way!

I found this to be a real page turner, with a very different take on shifters and their relationships with each other and humans. There are plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing as the murderer and their motives are slowly uncovered. I enjoyed discovering about the Nuala's family and will be looking to read the first book in the series, Animal Instincts, and any further additions to the series in future. I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys paranormal romantic suspense!

I requested and was gifted a copy of this book via NetGalley and this is my honest review after choosing to read it.

I love trying new authors or ones that I haven't read in a very long time. I know I've read Rosemoor before just not what. This story sounded good so I thought I'd give it a try.

I was so excited to read it but sadly it was just so-so. Not really great but also not horrible either.

I just really had trouble caring about the characters, something that's a must for my books. If you can't connect with the characters you won't be able to enjoy the story. The book can be a well written story but if you don't get into the characters your not in the story.

There are parts of the story that were enjoyable and I saw flashes of what I would have liked in characters but they had trouble keeping me there.

The story is well written and because there are parts I liked I kept reading it. The idea of the story is good too. I really liked that part of it. Maybe I should have started from book one and then I would have been more invested by the time I read this books. Food for thought.

Will I try another book by her? I can't say yes or no for sure. Time will tell.

The cover of the story is catchy and I wanted to love this story since it was set in the Chicago paranormal underground. I liked Ethan well enough, but didn't like Nuala. If you don't like the main characters... Since this is the second story, which I didn't know, it's probably important to read in order. I've read this author before, but I found this one disappointing.

Detective Ethan Grainger gave his new partner a distinctive stare. Isabelle was his new partner after losing the best partner he ever had- Shade. Ethan recognized the murdered victim- Alderman DeAndre Booker.from the West side, Ethan wondered what Booker was doing so far from home. The man wasn’t dressed for a night out at one of the clubs. Booker was also elected Vice Mayor by the city council. Booker had spent the last couple years working on getting jobs for inter city kids instead of them turning to gangs. Ethan was anxious to leave so that he could find Luc and get the man’s thoughts on the new but familiar murder. Ethan took some photos at the scene . especially of the body, of the dead mans face and ripped out throat. Than he pulled out his notebook and took notes. He got everything he could from the forensic findings, everything the officers on duty had gathered from the crowd or the other side of the crime scene tapes. Isabelle said she would call the Lakeside Zoo and see if any wolves or big animals were missing. Coyotes were not the only thing that worked for Cezar Lazare he had plenty of big cats including his family which were panther shifters. No one in Chicago PD new about the Kindred which were animal shifters. Or the true nature of their casino. Not unless you were invited to the lower deck where you could lose your soul to Lazare. The lower deck was cloaked by magic to the unsuspecting . As much as he hated the Ark he needed to go. Lazare did influence local politicians. Ethan had been avoiding shape shifting Kindred. Avoiding direct contact with Lazare’s daughter who had been Shade’s woman and was carrying Shade’s child now. Despite his vow to Shade he would make sure she and the baby were alright but Nuala blamed Ethan for Shades death. Ethan would like to forget her kind. Yet Ethan found himself attracted to Nuala. He’d checked on her through Shade;s twin Skye. Luc was Nuala’s half brother. Luc had help find the monster who had killed Shade as he was protecting Luc’s mom Elizabeth who had raised Luc human. There were shifter fights still going on even after Lazarre had promised Skye he would stop them? Skye was all about stopping the fights and taking care of the injured animals. Nuala time with Shade had been life altering . He’d shown her there was a different way to live. Ethan loved Shade like a brother. Him being murdered like Ethan’s real brother a decade ago losing SHade the same way had torn open wounds that never healed. Ethan had unresolved and highly inappropriate feelings for Nuala. Luc was the head of security for The Ark. Luc said he would put out feelers for anyone who had a problem with Alderman Booker. Ethan didn’t like Kindred or the operation at The Ark. Ethan’s failure to find his brother Mike’s killer still haunts him ten years later. Nuala decided to to move to Shade’s apartment after talking with Ethan about a different way of Maeve being raised and in a different place. Shade had been killed when he went to Elizabeth to ask some questions- Luc’s mom- and is killed saving her life. Nuala was very attracted to Ethan and when he kissed her she kissed him back during that kiss he ingested some of Nuala’s blood and could w hear Kindred’s thoughts. Than when he pulled back Nuala hit him.
I loved this book What a different take on shifters giving up their souls and taking human souls. But I do like the old shifter books but till loved this one as it was a great story. I loved how Nic was basically surly and quiet but he loved his sister Nuala and would do anything to keep her safe. I loved Nuala and Ethan together and how they interacted together. I also loved how Cezar was the loving parent this time and the mother could basically care less about her children and was all about hre things/ That was a change. I loved the pace and plot of this book. I loved Ethan was willing to do anything to save Nuala and Maeve. I loved the characters and the ins and outs of this story and I highly recommend it.

Definitely one of the most ridiculous books I have ever read. Top 25 for sure. Good gracious, I am sooo glad I did not pay for this.

Let’s start. Nuala has a 3 week relationship with Shade. He dies , she’s pregnant. Three months later, she realizes that oh, maybe it wasn’t really love, and that maybe, what they had wouldn’t go the distance. Why ? Oh, because of Shade’s partner. Convenient much ? How fickle are her feelings ? I mean, she seemed awfully quick to downplay her feelings for Shade if you ask me. So no, I didn’t really like that character at all. I didn’t get a connection between her and Ethan either.

As far as Ethan goes, he seems to just be there, running from one side to the other. The whole conflict of the book was just so predictable and quite frankly, lame. He didn’t give me much to work with.

The writing style is a hard no for me. This author was just trying to do TOO much. Not only are they shifters, but they are part Nephilim , do magic, can control people with their thoughts, are telepathic, can change their own physical appearance, but they can also “think” themselves from location to location. And the book of power that is filled with all the secrets and spells from the ancient ones? Like how could I not want to just bang my head on a wall while trying to read this ? There is an incessant need to constantly repeat Kindred or the fact that the could be ..... something else ..... no joke, she literally writes that. As far as the story goes, it actually seems to all take place in a span of a week, tops. Good gracious.

It seems like I’m the minority when it comes to this book. I found it boring. I skimmed through a solid chunk, thinking maybe it would pick up and get better. All I know is that NetGalley and the publisher wanted an honest review and well - that’s what they’re getting from me.

This is the second book in the Kindred Souls series but it can be read as a stand alone book. Our author gives you enough info so you are not lost but let me share you really do want to read Animal Instincts to get the full effect of this book. This series reads like a full blown movie. It is not like normal "paranormal shifter" books that you read. Author Patricia Rosemoor gives us a totally different slant on shifters that one scratching there heads and considering the possibility of the reality of shifters being out in the real world today...in light of all the mess going on. Okay that being said let me say that this book was even better than Animal Instincts book 1. This book is a 5 star read and it earned every single star and more. We open the book as if book one just ended... move on movie set I swear its movie ready fans.
Detective Ethan Grainger knows what is going on for real on the Ark...that it's not just a place to gamble but is in fact a home for shifters. (wink) It's a place that Ethan's partner' Shade's girl lives with her family who runs it. I said partner well passed partner as Shade passed in book 1 and Nuala blames Ethan for Shades death. So in this book we get all the nitty gritty about that and also we know Shade asked Ethan to watch after his woman and their child which is due any day.
This book is good... really good and had my husband flipping pages as he read it outloud to me. I had eye surgery and could not read to myself. So I had him read to me until I was released to read to myself.
Like I said earlier this series is another take on shifters that has you wondering and thinking deeply on how this could really work in the real world. It is not just a paranormal book but a romance and mystery as well. A trifecta of the best kind.

Nuala Lazare is Kindred whose pregnant with half-human and half-kindred baby. Nuala can't stop blaming Detective Ethan Grainger for his partner's Shade Cross's death. Nuala doesn't know the first thing about raising a child with a unique heritage. She knows that she can't turn to her own mother. Detective Ethan Grainger's life is marked by the tragedy of his younger brother's Matthew's death. Ten years later, the pain of not knowing who killed his brother haunts him still. A series of murders that could involve Kindred cross Ethan's path along with a new partner. Ethan knows there's a common link but unsure how to go about finding his answers. Ethan is also haunted by Nuala Lazare. Will Nuala allow Ethan to help her? Can Nuala admit her attraction to Ethan? Can Ethan escape his attraction to Nuala? Your answers await you in Animal Attraction.

This book picks up right where Animal Instincts left off. The characters and story are unique, complicated, compelling, complex, mysterious, and hopeful too. I like the combination of biblical elements with a mixture of fantasy. I look forward to more from this series and author.

Nuala is a panther shifter, a Kindred, and pregnant. She wants her daughter to live a normal life, even though she’ll be half and half. Ethan is a detective and wants nothing to do with Kindred. His partner, Shade, was killed a couple of months ago and Nuala blames him. Shade is the father of Nuala’s baby and Ethan promised to take care of them. When Ethan investigates the murder of an alderman, he believes it was by a Kindred. While investigating, two more people are killed and Ethan must hurry and find the killer or killers. But also go after the man who took Nuala and her daughter. He is powerful and it’ll take Ethan gaining powers to help defeat him.

A pretty good story, though I was totally confused at the beginning. I think you have to read the first book to know what’s going on. Then Nuala absolutely despised Ethan and then all of a sudden she liked him. Then she was acting hurt because Ethan was not spending more time with her but she didn’t explain that she no longer disliked him. Action, secrets, and sexual tension.

This is the second book in this fun series about the Kindred Lazare Clan who live in The Arc a supernatural world that most humans don't know exists. Detective Ethan Grainger is a human who knows all about this world as his partner Shade was a member of the clan before he was killed Nuala Lazar is the very pregnant partner of Ethan's ex work partner and is due to give birth at any time he hasn't seen much of her since his Shade's death as she blame him for it. When a mutilated body turns up in a park it is no longer an option for Ethan to stay away as this murder has links to The Arc. Nuala is the half sister of Luc who stars in the first book in this series and with his encouragement she decides to move to Shades old home and try to raise her child away from the Arc like Luc's mother did for him This leads to Ethan stepping up to protect Nuala and as they spend more time and attraction grows between them making Nuala question whether she was really in love with Shade. As danger circles Ethan will put his life and soul on the line to keep Nuala and her child safe

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley and I am voluntarily reviewing it.

Let me just say that I don't normally read fantasy romance but there was something that attracted me to the first novel "Animal Instinct". After reading that, I was hooked on this series.

I didn't shed a tear(s) on this story like I did on the first one but this one kept me glued to my e-reader. I had to know how Ethan Grainger (a detective with the Chicago PD) and Nuala Lazare (a Kindred who is pregnant by Ethan's former partner, who is now deceased) would possibly get together! This book did not disappoint.

Like I mentioned earlier, I can't comprehend fantasy romance but here the story takes place in Chicago. It was easy to picture the scenes. I would loved to see this series in a movie!

There was a sexy scene so I would only recommend this to someone over the age of 18. While this could be a stand-alone, I would highly recommend to read the books in order to fully understand the Kindred.

This book was a mixed bag for me. I love the authors' work and have her on my must read authors' list, however, this novel fell a bit flat to me. It took me until I was halfway through the book until I even felt I understood the characters or what was going on.

The author has created a complicated world on the Ark and with the Kindred that I found very confusing. However, this is the second book in the series and I did not read the first book in the series. I'm sure if I had read Animal Instincts, it would have made a bit more sense.

At it's heart, this is a romance between a detective and a Kindred, with far more complications than a normal relationship and plenty of guilt and angst to go around. On that part, it delivers.

This novel is a paranormal and quite a bit more fantasy than I was expecting. If you enjoy that blend of genres, you will want to read this book, however, I'd recommend starting with book one, Animal Instincts.

I didn’t read the previous story, but the author did a wonderful job in bringing readers up to date on what’s going on without having to read the previous story. The romance between Ethan and Nuala was interesting but took a while for her to come around because she believes Ethan had something to do with Slade’s death, who is also the father of her unborn child. However, once she opens up to him, her abilities allow her to clearly see that her projection of anger was wrongly directed.

As Ethan and Nuala mend their relationship, a killer is closely watching them. Waiting for the best opportunity to strike.

The story was enjoyable and I loved how protective Ethan got with Nuala and her unborn child. He was a wonderful protected and gentleman. The writing had an easy flow and certainly kept me engaged. But what really got me was the suspense of who the killer and how she created an intriguing romance suspense. - Julianna

Animal Attraction by Patricia Rosemoor is part of the Kindred Souls Series. The author has created a complex society in which the Ark and those of the Kindred exist. This makes for a complicated story at times. However, the longer I stick with the series the more I am enjoying it.

There are many elements to this story besides the paranormal and the suspense. It deals with relationships past and present, prejudice and preconceived beliefs. Then there is also conflict, guilt, and resistant to attraction. It is a lot for Detective Ethan Grainger to handle while also investigating a murder. This is a series that it would help the reader to read in order starting with Animal Instincts.

An ARC of the book was given to me by the publisher through Net Galley which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Detective Ethan Grainger is investigating the death of a public official. It appears that this is an animal attack. He thinks he may have been a killed by the Kindred, shifters who are hidden from most of the world. Nuala is the mother of Ethan's deceased partner, Shade. She and her family own The Ark, a casino where you can lose more than your money. Ethan goes there hopefully to get answers to who or what the murderer is. Although feeling guilty, Ethan and Nuala have a great attraction. After a second death, everyone is in danger. Who will be next? When Nuala and her baby are kidnapped, will they be saved in time? What can Ethan do when he is only human? Will they survive long enough to explore these feelings? I loved this book. Different take on shifters. Loved Ethan. I received this book from Net Galley and Tule Publishing for a honest review. The opinions are my own.

I didn’t read book one but this can be read as a stand alone because the author gets you up to speed right in the beginning. Ethan lost his partner Slade in the police force when someone killed him but he left behind a very pregnant girlfriend. Nuala blames Ethan for Slades death but being a Kindred she can hear his thoughts and knows it wasn’t his fault. Someone is killing off people with a wolf shifter and they are after Nuala and her soon to be born child but Ethan is becoming very attached to them. If Ethan can stay alive to find the killer maybe he could tell Nuala how he feels if she will have a human. This story dealt with shifters, magic and some old fashioned police work.

While the author does a wonderful job in bringing readers up to date on events from Animal Instincts (book one in the series) I would still recommend reading this series from the beginning. Ethan and Nuala are a wonderful couple, even though their romance takes some time to evolve due to Nuala’s belief that Ethan was complicit in her previous lover’s death. The growth of their relationship is intriguing and the suspense of an unknown killer definitely adds heightened impact.

The story has and easy ebb and flow, and readers of paranormal and fantasy romance will thoroughly enjoy the well-developed plot, with mystery and suspense that only add to the reader experience. I can definitely recommend reading Animal Attraction but do advise to start with book one.

This is the first book I have read by this author. This is an interesting world. Ethan is a human and a cop riddled with guilt about his brother and his partner. If he had just paid more attention, maybe he could have prevented their deaths. Nuala is Kindred and was his partner's woman. She is having his baby and can't stand the sight of Ethan. She is sure that he could have prevented the death. She has to blame someone. As Ethan and Nuala spend more time together, they both realize they were wrong about a lot of things. When faced with losing Nuala, Ethan has to become something else to save her and her baby. Will it change everything?

This is such a different view of shifters or Kindred, of good, bad and just evil. The second book is about Nuala the daughter of the high ranking Kindred and Ethan a good cop. Both were in the first book of the series and now it continues with Nuala that is pregnant with Shades baby. Shade was a police officer and part "Powers" that died in the first book where his twin sister was one of the main characters. We still see Luc and Skye in this book but not as much. I really feel.that they should have more Skye and Luc in the story as Skye is the keeper of the Book of Powers and is supposed to keep evil in check. Still a great book all in all.

Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for a free e-book to review.

I tried to enjoy this book, but couldn't quite get into it, I struggled to feel any empathy for the characters. I don't feel they were written very well, they felt a bit soulless and empty. I can forgive a lot of things like writing or plot if I love the characters, so I think that's where I couldn't connect with this book. The story and writing wasn't bad but I had no interest in the characters and so didn't care what happened to them at all. Sorry to say due to this it was not for me.

Ethan is aware of the Kindred- shapeshifters that corrupt others and take souls. As a cop, he sees the dark present in humans and the paranormal. Readers get the opportunity to see him grow in his personal and professional life. This book offers a new take on legends of shapeshifters and paranormal beings. The characters are interesting and multidimensional. There’s room for growth into other books with the many characters introduced.

I received this ARC for an honest review.

I'd recommend reading Book 1 so you can understand some things. But later on the plot became intriguing that I can't stop reading it.

The few of the highlights is the growth of the character(s), the relationship between Ethan and Nuala, the suspense of who the killer, and the lore.

As a lover of paranormal and fantasy I'd recommend reading this. But start with book 1 first.

I loved this story! What a different concept of the ARK…..totally loved! I loved this, and the Kindred and the relationships they have with the humans. Nuala and her family have a tight relationship except with her mother. Ready to expand her family Nuala is dealing with loss as well. Ethan is an acquaintance of hers whom she isn’t all that fond of.

The relationship between Nuala and Ethan, grows into something very special. Although short this story was very good. I hope there is to come….

This is the 2nd book of this series, and i like this better than the 1st one.

Maybe because the characters were already introduce and at the same time, the love story was slow to build. I mean, for me it was slow, but there were rare moments that i was giddy with feelings this book invokes.

Some things were a bit clear on this part. The explanation of some rituals were better.

I do hope on the 3rd book we will get more.

I voluntarily read a advanced reader's copy of this book.

Book two in the Kindred Souls series. Animal Attraction by Patricia Rosemoor. A fantasy set in the Chicago's supernatural underground world. If you enjoy fantasy with shifeshifters mixed with humans this book is for you. The author knows how to bring a story together. Not my usual type of book but still good.
