1° Lettura: Scans (data non identificata)
2° Lettura: 28 maggio 2019
3° Lettura: 5 luglio 2020

Le scans non le calcolo come lettura nella cronologia. Oltre a non ricordarmi la data al suo tempo erano illegali. Ora con i volumi italiani posso tenerle senza problemi ma comunque non mi pare giusto lo stesso. 😉

After reading Kisaragi’s Hanger series (please let there be a Hanger, volume 4!), I was interested in his other works. Stylistically, Brother X Brother, an incest-but-not-really themed BL, has the feel of his more polished and detailed work in Hanger, albeit the Brother artwork still retains the look of old school manga drawing. The biggest difference between Kisaragi’s recent work and the Brother series is the quality of the narrative. In Brother X Brother, the story feels more disjointed and awkward. Moreover, the characters and their feelings aren’t as clearly defined as in the Hanger series.

Brother X Brother, to my knowledge, is not available in an official English edition. I bought a French edition, instead, though English scanlations are available (please, buy a book if you read it online, to make sure the mangaka is compensated for their work). This is one of those manga that really suffers when digitized; the soft, warm gray tone of the paper used in the paperback version together with the double page layouts you see each time you turn the page give the art a unitary, wholistic feel that improves the overall reading experience. The smaller scale of the printed pages, as contrasted with the enlarged, single page image available on scanlation sites, also helps unify the verbal and visual narrative.

Finally, alas, we come yet again to the incest theme. In Brother, the siblings aren’t blood relations and we’re raised separately - which helps. One sibling had sexual and romantic feelings for his stepfather, which were unconsummated. One of these days I’ll find either a valid and robust theoretical framework (BESIDES the idiotic Freudian framework that is still sometimes employed in BL scholarship), and, ideally, maybe even some empirical, experimental research (there’s one interesting article on the incest theme in Chinese BL, but it conflicts somewhat with another study so In not yet sure what to make of it. In any case, given the birth of BL in Japan, I’d like to understand it in the Japanese context).

Die Rezension bezieht sich auf die deutsche Ausgabe. (This review is about the German edition)

KAname leaves home & MAsato tells Souichirou KAname’s past: his mother the actress had all her lovers & they sexually abused & raped KAname & he’s had PTSD since then —he & Kaname just have sex b/c that’s how Masato thought they could deal with Kaname’s PTSD-they don’t love each other or anything- Kaname goes back to the old house & runs into one of the old asshole lovers who tries to attack him but Souichirou & Masato show up & save Kaname in time & Souichirou just shows Kaname love & kindness aww & says he really likes KAname & to come home. Things go back to normal.
Back to the past - we see MAsato living with their father & what it was like when Kaname moved in & how Masato found out about KAname’s past with his mothers’ fucked up lovers & how his dad wanted him to take care of Kaname & that he was dying from a disease - Kaname overhears them & leaves - Masato goes & finds him & rescues him from his stepfather douchebag & they agree to be ‘brothers’ for their father so he can die in peace so it’s really a contract between them - anyway back to the present: Masato realizes that their father only ever wanted them to heal Kaname & he knew about Masato’s real feelings for him; that he loved & wanted him like a man & not a father.

Well, the series still has a … interesting… premise. But! It’s still got me hooked. The beginning of this book has a family tree diagram and I have finally figured out how these three brothers relate. Masato is not related by blood to either Souichirou or Kaname, but was just raised by their father. It’s a very complicated situation for the three of them. The majority of this volume focused on the past and why Masato and Kaname ended up sleeping together. I’d not be surprised to see something like this in real life happen. Knowing the full story makes the book more real, more relatable now. And when I found out Masato was not related to Kaname I lost most of my hesitation about this series. I’m not very conservative and I don’t like to judge, but incest still hits on some ingrained dogmas. But, hey, no incest. FANTASTIC artwork. Intriguing storyline. That’s a four star and enough to keep me reading.

I'm not going to lose to many words on this one, especially since I'm still pretty angry.
Let's mention one positive thing: the drawing style is not bad.
What really put me off about this manga is the way sexual abuse is dealt with.
Like, everyone thinking that Kaname was suddenly saved, just because Soichiro told him that he liked him? Seriously? Did the other brother not have this glorious idea in the last FIVE YEARS?
To be fair, there is some mention of therapy later on, but it really is only mentioned.
Furthermore I found most of the character's reactions not quite fitting...but that's another subject.

Not my cup of tea.

4.5. Kaname and Masato's tragic past is revealed. Kaname is so horribly broken, looking for love and acceptance in the wrong places. Masato's complicated feelings for his adopted father pushes him into a symbiotic relationship with Kaname. Art is still lovely and the relationships between the characyyers keeps getting more complex.

The second book is just as angsty and hot as the first one. This volume shows more of a background of the three main characters, how they met and started living together. Kaname is such an uke :)
