NOTE: THIS IS NOT ACTUALLY INCEST, I SWEAR IT'S NOT, DON'T JUDGE ME.

That aside...I'm not really sure why the author chose to call it Brother X Brother. It's that odd almost-incest trope that comes up a lot in manga, where step-siblings who are not actually blood-related fall in love. Only, this is even less taboo than that, because the father of the main character is dead, and the other two are his step-sons that he acquired much later in their lives from relationships from different women (who are also both dead). So not only are these three all adults, they weren't remotely raised together, and none of them share parentage. Even if they had, the parents in question are mostly dead. There's nothing really that taboo about the relationships they have (oh, and it's not a threesome either, so not even taboo there). Even the fact that "th-they're both guys" is not an issue here, or even brought up barely at all, as this takes place in yaoi fantasy land, where most people are gay, and this isn't really a problem as far as anyone's concerned.

So if the author went so out of her way to make this as least taboo as possible...WHY CALL IT BROTHER X BROTHER?? I mean, wouldn't that title scare off people who expected an incest story, while at the same time disappoint people who were looking for an incest story? It just seems alienating to me. And baffling. I just don't get it. (I only read it on recommendation from someone who assured me it wasn't incest, for example.) And I know they call each other "brother" in the story, but since it is a manga, even basic weaboo 101 will tell you that people that aren't necessarily related can refer to each other like that in Japan.

Anyway, besides that whole baffling naming issue and the fact that I simply do not understand almost-incest stories...I liked this. It was an insanely cute story with insanely pretty men. It was very emotional at points, sweet at other points, and just all-around cute. I guess it's not technically over yet, but the main plot issues have been resolved, so now the manga has just sort of spiraled into side stories. I finished five volumes in a day. It wasn't the most absolutely amazing thing I've ever read, but I've plowed through some very odd yaoi lately, so it was nice to read one that didn't make me want to bang my head against a wall.

Except for the title. But other than that.

Souichirou, newbie actor, recently discovered he has two older brothers. His father died and in his will left Souichirou's childhood home to whoever stays in the house the longest. Family issues, secret lovers and lonely Shouichirou wanting a family make this an interesting read. Masato, the oldest, is gruff and protective of Kaname. Kaname, middle, is kind and fragile, suffering from nightmares. Souichirou, the youngest, is lonely and desperate for a family. I liked the family dynamic and the art is lovely.

This manga depicts the story of three step-brothers who have to live together in one house for a month to inherit it. And it only goes from bad to worse when the youngest one finds out that his two older brothers are in a sexual relationship. This manga is beautifully, gorgeously drawn. I would say that it's Kisaragi's best work as of yet. The story is full of angst, secrets and hot sex. Just awesome!

I was happy upon learning that the "brothers" weren't. I'm not too crazy on the incest thing. Well anyway around the middle of the book all I could think about was Kaname!! Nuuu!!! It broke my heart a bit learning about his difficult past. But all three brothers together in that house and all that drama is awakening the huge fangirl within me! I also love the sex scenes because thier not too graphic but still not too annoyingly conservative. And the artwork. Gotta love that too!!

A good manga. Not too much sex-with-no-reason, a good storyline, real motives behind people's actions. I only find a bit disturbing the absence of realism: there are only boys everywhere and everyone of them is gay. That's a bit strage for someone used to Slice-of-Life, but well, this is not actually slice of life.
I liked it, but I would have liked it more if Soichiro didnt change his (wonderful) charachter anytime it comes to sexual matters, suddenly becoming a seme when he's actually not.

I love the series! The plot is perfect and not too exaggerated. I've already read up to the fourth volume and absolutely enjoyed it. The characters are relatable and the topic is great! It shows how much a family (not even blood related) can do so much together and sacrifice the most important things for each other!

This Manga has lots of interesting plot lines. The characters are interesting and engaging. Each character is very different from one another. I found myself completely in love with Kaname and the brothers complicated relationships. The art is absolutely beautiful and relfects the character's emotions astoundingly well.

After reading Kisaragi’s Hanger series (please let there be a Hanger, volume 4!), I was interested in his other works. Stylistically, Brother X Brother, an incest-but-not-really themed BL, has the feel of his more polished and detailed work in Hanger, albeit the Brother artwork still retains the look of old school manga drawing. The biggest difference between Kisaragi’s recent work and the Brother series is the quality of the narrative. In Brother X Brother, the story feels more disjointed and awkward. Moreover, the characters and their feelings aren’t as clearly defined as in the Hanger series.

Brother X Brother, to my knowledge, is not available in an official English edition. I bought a French edition, instead, though English scanlations are available (please, buy a book if you read it online, to make sure the mangaka is compensated for their work). This is one of those manga that really suffers when digitized; the soft, warm gray tone of the paper used in the paperback version together with the double page layouts you see each time you turn the page give the art a unitary, wholistic feel that improves the overall reading experience. The smaller scale of the printed pages, as contrasted with the enlarged, single page image available on scanlation sites, also helps unify the verbal and visual narrative.

Finally, alas, we come yet again to the incest theme. In Brother, the siblings aren’t blood relations and we’re raised separately - which helps. One sibling had sexual and romantic feelings for his stepfather, which were unconsummated. One of these days I’ll find either a valid and robust theoretical framework (BESIDES the idiotic Freudian framework that is still sometimes employed in BL scholarship), and, ideally, maybe even some empirical, experimental research (there’s one interesting article on the incest theme in Chinese BL, but it conflicts somewhat with another study so In not yet sure what to make of it. In any case, given the birth of BL in Japan, I’d like to understand it in the Japanese context).

I will say right away that while at first glance this looks like a series about fraternal incest, there is clearly something deeper going on than that. I began it due to the gorgeous artwork and a few pages in I was hooked. There is a lot of intrigue going around and suspicious characters saying suspicious things. I’m not sure where this is going and I’m a little confused by the whole volume – it brought up a lot of questions – but I’m interested in finding out more.

This kept popping up on lists to read but I didn’t really want to. Then several reviews said it’s not really about brothers, read it, it’s great. Maybe it gets better after the first volume. It’s interesting enough to keep me reading another volume to see if it gets better.

I put this on my TBR pile, started reading the scanlation and realized I had already read this some time back. Lots of smut but a decent read.

I started reading this more out of idle curiosity than because of anything else-that's what happens when you can't sleep and start browsing Manga at 1 am. I'm not entirely sure where this is going, but it's intriguing enough for me to keep reading for now just so I can find out what everybody's problem is. And the art is definitely gorgeous.

This is definitely a drama, but it didn't feel as heavy as it could have, because the main character has a strong heart and will. You just feel like in the end it will work out. There was no incest involved and the homosexuality wasn't even an issue. I don't know what it was that made me hold back and only give three (point five) stars, because this story is a very good one.

Bir yaoi'ye sıkıcı diyeceğim aklıma gelmezdi amaa.... Sıkıcıydı yaa. O siyah saçlı kardeşin -adını unuttum- geçirdiği bunalım beni bunalttı. Az daha komik olsaymış yalnız tadından yenmezmiş.
