The Pinkerton Matchmaker #5

An Agent for Audrey

Rate this book
When heiress Audrey Hardwick is given the opportunity to become a Pinkerton Agent, she wholeheartedly leaves her life in Cincinnati behind and sets out for a new adventure. But her mission turns into mayhem when she meets Agent Warren Rockwell, a former gunslinger, who is too stubborn – and handsome – for his own good. Will she succeed in proving her worth as an agent, and as a woman, or will Warren always view her as his reluctant partner?

As one of Pinkerton’s top agents, Warren must marry the hard-headed Hardwick due to a new rule that has been implemented at the Denver office: Newly hired female agents must marry an agent for their first case assignment. Audrey’s beauty and her pampered background has him so frustrated that he doesn’t know whether to scold her… or just kiss her good and hard. Can he learn to trust her enough to change his independent nature?

Falling in love just isn’t that easy.

4 Stars!

I really like these Pinkerton Matchmaker books! They can be read in any order, and are by a number bet of different authors, so it’s nice to get differing writing styles and perspectives. I loved the strong female lead, Audrey, in this one, and Warren was a rough-around-the-edges kind of hero. The mystery kept me interested and guessing, with some surprising twists towards the end. Excited to read more by this author in this series!

MY TAKE
I've been seeing these around and finally decided to read one. I've read Beers before and enjoyed her books but none of the Pinkerton Matchmakers, so I decided to start with this one.

It's a novella, so the story is short and uncomplicated. There's insta-love which isn't uncommon in a novella, but I found the attraction believable. Since my parents had a case of insta-love, I know it can really happen.

Warren was arrogant and irritating at first. It was almost like he wanted to drive her off. Also not a surprise, since he'd always been a loner. But she's also an enigma. In some ways her life's experiences fit his assumption of a pampered background, but then she showed that she had good instincts, asked great questions, and could shoot with deadly accuracy. What's not to love about that?

Thanks to an unusual rainy Spring day, I finished this book easily in one afternoon. It’s only 200 pages but the font is large, and the editing is really stretched out. (Some of the editing is really goofy!) Whatever, the story was good.

Wealthy Audrey Hardwick fills her time helping to solve cases in the Cincinnati Police Department. It’s not an acceptable job for females in the 1870s, but Audrey’s interest and skills while volunteering become better and better.

Audrey has the opportunity to become a Pinkerton agent as the renowned Pinkerton Agency is beginning to recognize the asset that female agents can bring to certain cases. She is assigned to partner with former bounty hunter Warren Rockwell. The catch is, they must be married to pull off the partnership, so they marry in name only. (An annulment will happen after their assigned case is completed.)

Their case is to find the person(s) responsible for printing and passing counterfeit bills. Off they go to Hickory Creek in the Wyoming Territory to investigate and solve. I really liked the clever banter the two have while learning to adjust to their “partnership”.

The plot is interesting and creative. It reads more as a novella as a few times the story jumps leaving me to assume details. Audrey and Warren’s attraction seemed way too fast, like instant. All in all, I thought it was good, not fantastic. Not sure if I’ll read any other of the Pinkerton series. (Seems they are written by different authors which can be interesting…) I really prefer Beer’s Beckett Files Series.

I enjoyed listening to An Agent for Audrey as I sewed on a cold, icy fall morning. This book is well suited to just such a day, but would be equally well suited for a light vacation read in warmer climes. It was a sweet, quick read, reminiscent of The Pinkertons television series.

Audrey Hardwick was not drawn to her parents' high society lifestyle. Her love of science, mathematics and solving puzzles lead her to volunteer with the Cincinnati Police Department, and then to training as a Pinkerton agent. Due to society's norms at the time, Audrey actually had to wed the male agent with whom she traveled, even if it was in name only. Their first case took them to the Wyoming Territory to investigate counterfeiters purported to be working in the area of Hickory Creek. The mystery will hold the reader's interest, and the romance is along the lines of what would be expected. An Agent for Audrey is a clean read, and I would try other books in this series which has multiple authors, as well as other books by this author.

I was provided with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest opinion. I was under no obligation to provide a positive review and received no monetary compensation.

Audrey and Warren

Audrey is a young heiress whose parents were murdered during a robbery. She has been helping the Cincinnati Police Department in an unofficial capacity and has helped solve several crimes. However, when she learns that the Pinkerton Detective Agency is hiring women, she quickly heads for the Denver office. Upon arrival, she learns that she and her male companion have to marry.

Warren Rockwell is a seasoned agent and an ex-bounty hunter. He is definitely not happy to get married he needs to obey orders. He also thinks his wife is willful, doesn't listen to orders and acts like she knows more than he does.

They are assigned to break up a countering ring in Hickory Creek , Wyoming. Will they be able to solve this case without killing each other or will they choose to become partners and actually decide to stay married?

This book is filled with humor, excitement, and action with a surprise twist. ENJOY!!

An Agent for Audrey is the fifth book in the Pinkerton Matchmaker series, but it can definitely stand alone as a historical romance with suspense. Laura Beers has superbly written the story of a Pinkerton Agent who was a former bounty hunter and a wannabe Pinkerton Agent who is an Heiress who are forced to marry to work together to find counterfeiters. I was rooting for Audrey and Warren as they learned to trust each other as work partners and eventually love each other as life partners. This story grabbed my attention attention from the first sentence and kept it until the last sentence. I would highly recommend An Agent for Audrey! I received an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest opinion.

Will she fall in love with her husband?

Oh! Warren really does underestimate Audrey and her skills, he has no experience with women and leads a solitary life, will he ever stop offending her and learn to say what he really means? His awkwardness has you chuckling but is quite endearing.
Audrey may be good at solving puzzles but she has lead a very sheltered life, a life which doesn't prepare her for marriage or for life in the West. Her reactions to Warren, western men and unexpected situations may be humorous to us, but they may cost her her life. Will she learn to control her facial expressions? And can she keep her heart?
A great addition to the series which I read on Kindle Unlimited.

I really enjoyed this story in the series. Audrey has been working for the police department, but secretly - there will never be an official female working for that police department! But, her father was a friend of the chief... Audrey wants to be recognized for the work she does and jumps at the chance to join the Pinkerton's, a dream she's had. Unfortunately she ends up with a rather boorish man who has no idea how to treat or act around a lady. But of course, that animosity doesn't hold and they find themselves relying on one another and needing one another as their case goes on. When danger comes, they realize what they feel for one another as they face losing each other.

Book 5 of The Pinkerton Matchmaker series follows Audrey, a new female agent in training, and her partner Warren, a seasoned Pinkerton agent. Forced into a marriage of convenience to protect Audrey’s reputation while they travel and train together, the two are tasked with investigating a counterfeit money laundering ring and the disappearance of the previous Pinkerton agent who was investigating. Warren is rude and has little experience interacting with women. Audrey is a wealthy heiress who has experience closing cases for the police department back home. It’s a fun story as they get to know each other and work together.

Laura and Warren, the most unlikely couple, are forced to work together. But can Warren learn his independent, stubborn wife what she needs to keep herself safe. Wife, yes wife coz to solve crimes together it is only decent to get married but an annulment will follow soon enough, or not?
Will working together connect them so that they don`t want that annulment?
This book is fun to read, it will make you smile or even laugh out loud.
This is the first time I`ve read a story by this author but not the last.
I discovered this series and it`s totally worth your time.

Excellent writing! I love the concept behind this series. Ms. Beers added the perfect amount of wit, charm, sass, romance and adventure to make this story very hard to put down. Great character development!

I received this book as an ARC for review! This was yet another great read in the Pinkerton Matchmaker series!

Audrey was working as a volunteer officer at her local police station. But things were coming to an end for her and she was recommended to the Pinkerton Agency by her good family friend, because of her work! She was an heiress, whose parents were of high society, that she did not enjoy one bit. She gladly leaves her life behind in Cincinnati, only to discover when she arrives at the Pinkerton agency that she is to marry one of the agents for the case. This is when she meets Warren Rockwell. Neither are thrilled about this arrangement and at first are very cold towards one another! They are given a case that involves the disappearance of an agent and money counterfeiting. They arrive to the town where it’s suspected to be happening and already things are off to a rough start for the two. But as the story goes and develops, they both find themselves starting to care for one another. This story involved suspected murders and a reform school wealthy girls that is run very strictly compared to what Audrey knew. As the story continues, they both discover more and more that leads to the truth and capture of a local officer and teacher of the reform school! And in the end, Audrey and Warren learn that they don’t want to be without each other!

This was a really good read and very well written! It keeps your attention from page 1!! I loved it!

This is a fun story between an heiress and a bounty hunter turned Pinkerton. There really is a lot of differences and many of them stand in the way of their relationship as partners. But along the way, they discover that a lot of those differences are what make them great partners. There seems to be a lot of assuming on both parts, like today, but how they get resolved is truly funny. Looking forward to book 6

I love a good suspense book and then add the historical element from this author, a female character that is strong and formidable in her own way, and a budding romance all the while trying to solve a case involving murder, counterfeiters, and the wild west, now you have a great read. I thoroughly enjoyed this book from Laura Beers and can't wait to read more from her.

Audrey and Warren

Warren was seasoned Pinkerton agent and Audry was a Pinkerton Agent in training. For women to be Pinkerton Agents they were required to marry their trainers for proprieties sake. Warren and Audrey were assignment was to find a counterfeiting ring. This assignment and working together was much more difficult than they imagined

Enjoyable

Right from the beginning, the story drew me into its inner workings. This installment or the Pinkerton Matchmaker books was funny. The characters were interesting and the case Audrey and Warren were involved in was plausible and their sleuthing skills believable. I highly reccomend this book.

Mystery and romance in one!

I liked Warren’s initial thoughts on having a female partner. A personal secretary! LOL It was great to see how Warren and Audrey learn to work together, respect and trust in each other, and eventually stop the counterfeiting ring. This was a clean action/adventure romance. I’m loving this series! So much fun to read.

I really enjoyed this Pinkerton matchmaker story. The story of a woman well ahead of her time and a man used to working alone who believes men should always be in charge. It was fun to watch the sparks fly!

Fast Moving Fun!

Laura Beers' fast- moving plot is delightful. Warren and Audrey are great characters. Warren, a former bounty hunter, doesn't quite no what to do with his stubborn, sassy wife. His bumbling confusion is so sweet.

This is why I buy Laura’s books. This is a short, sweet read and I enjoyed reading about Audrey and Warren in this novella. Although it is part of a series from different authors, it can be read as a stand alone.
