Ilyana Rasputin dying was a huge turning point not only for Colossus, but for the X-Men in general. It seemed that, for a time, it was a permanent stain on the legacy of the X-Men to lose someone so heroic and young such as Ilyana. This huge book tells the full story of how she comes back.
First off, there is so much material in this volume! And while some books like this usually have some filler, I actually found each part of this book if not essential, then at least informative towards the story of how and why Magik comes back. There is the story of Colossus in general, and how he still grieves. There's the story of X-23 and how her past catches up with her, and more importantly the team. We see them go through hell (literally) in order to get their teammate back.
Then we see the main story and how twisted and demonic Ilyana has become. But the team does find out that she is still in there, no matter how corrupted she is now. Eventually, Magik joins the team again, but the story of how she got there was riveting and entertaining.
If you're a fan of the X-Men and know about the fate of Ilyana, definitely check this out.
Liked most of the artwork except for one guy who made the characters look somewhat thin, stretched out and made Pixie looked deformed, especially in profile. Big turn off. Anyway, I've been a fan of Magik since the beginning and I enjoyed this book. Not all of the issues were about Magik and this was disappointing and jolting, made the whole seem disjointed. I don't see why they were in there. But this book is for all Magik fans or Magik curious fans. Worth adding to your collection. You could get the complete set of 4 X-Infernus comics and get the issues that were Magic centric without the extra stuff. However, this graphic novel tells Illyana's story at the end in summary using artwork from the original comics. That alone is worth getting this graphic novel for.
Just to be clear, there was a four part Magik comic in the 80's or so and it might have been subtitled something like Storm and Illyana. That tells how Illyana becomes Magik. Then there's X-Fernus and that is the other mini series one must have if you're a Magik fan. Everything else is cool but not necessary in my opinion.
So I’ve got all three graphic novels for the new X-men. And the ink and colors for them were amazing. Except for most of the issues in this one. The characters looked like poorly drawn cartoons. But once you get past those few issues then the art work gets way better again.

I have Divided We Stand and Infernus in separate volumes, so I’ll review those stories there.
This draws New X-Men to a close. What a great series. I loved the whole thing. These characters are so incredibly well fleshed out, and throughout the series, we’ve really gotten to enjoy understanding different facets of their personalities by observing them in a huge variety of situations. Relationships have formed, others have been broken... these kids have transformed into adults before our eyes, and they depart this series hardened by life, while still maintaining their youthful energy.
There are 3 major arcs, and all of them are spectacular. Right out the gate, we’re hit with “Mercury Falling.” It’s a truly badass story with a great (evil as fuck) villain, some awesome action courtesy of X-23, and a very satisfying conclusion delivered, surprisingly, by our very own White Queen of the Hellfire Club. After that, it’s The Quest for Magik (which ends up being kind of a sequel to the original Magik miniseries, as well as Inferno.) If you like that demonic shit, and I do, than you’ll really like that arc. Finally, the last arc seems to mainly center around the emotional turmoil these other stories have left in their wake. It’s a great setup for Messiah CompleX, and it leaves us on a bittersweet note, because we want to spend forever with these teenage mutants.
This series really has been something special. The Kyle/Yost writing team really brings it home.
That’s not to say I didn’t love the Nunzio DeFilippes run as well. I think the two runs, as different as they are, really complimented each other rather well.
This is a very bright and exciting moment in X history, and it’s a collection I will surely celebrate for years to come. Happy reading!
My least favorite volume of the "New Mutants/New X-Men" run. It was a decent action book and I really liked all the characters but, after Kyle and Yost took over, it just wasn't much fun anymore. The X-Infernus story included here was better than it had any right to be.
