An interesting short biography of General of the Armies John Pershing. I did not know that he was promoted from Captain to Brigadier General, skipping the ranks of Major, Lt. Colonel, and Colonel, by the urging of Teddy Roosevelt. Born before the Civil War, Pershing lived to see the Atomic Age.
I was also not aware that there were Navajo code talkers in WWI.
My 119th read of Landmark’s American history books series. Only three more to go!
Henry Castor published this nonfiction biography of General John Joseph Pershing in 1957. It was the exact book I was looking for in 2019. I was curious about Pershing’s military experiences during WWI and wanted more information on his history as an officer in the United States. Many photographs are included in the book which add to the reading experience.
I've been doing a lot of reading about the world wars, mostly the first one right now so I chose this Landmark book to include and found it very interesting and very informative. It's written for middle readers so a quick read and not so much a history of the entire war but a biography of General Pershing and how he was part of several American conflicts and ultimately his military leadership with the American involvement in WWI. Made me wish for more General Pershings!
This was a really good read. It taught me a little more about an era not often discussed in any detail in school. Also, it really sparked my interest in World War One history. However, for a number of reasons, I feel it was written more for kids, and that's why I only give it 3 stars.
