THE STORY
The shores of Gharn are vibrant with life… apart from one spot, where even the native insects fear to tread. It is there that Thalinoth of Charr ventures, the sorcerer drawn to the mysterious Claw of Mermedus by portents and visions sent by Tzeentch. Something lurks in the waters beneath that benighted spot, something that could provide great power to Thalinoth and his warband… or spell their doom.

The Tzeentchian sorcerer Thalinosh of Charr has led his warband to the shores of Gharn in search of a lost artefact of great power, which he intends to reclaim and exploit. Putting his magics to good use, Thalinosh ventures deep beneath the water despite the threat of a horror that even the wild creatures fear.

This feels like vintage Werner – a story that could almost have been plucked from the World-That-Was, populated by horrifying monsters and devious, backstabbing characters. There’s not a great deal of subtlety at play, in either the prose or the plot, but that’s not really the point.

The Deeper Shade is a little slow to start but soon picks up and becomes quite entertaining. The story is as well written as most others by C.L. Werner with some good action and evocative descriptions of the marine setting. Another thing I quite liked about the story was that it was basically a small Chaos force fighting a wild monster rather than one of the other factions in the game, something I haven’t read much of. With an entirely Tzeentchian cast some elements of the plot were a little predictable, but it was still entertaining to see the inevitable play out.

The version of the short story I had also included a preview of Black Pyramid, which seemed quite interesting.
