A thief is targeting the Dark Nebula comic book shop where Esther works, and it’s up to Susan to put her amateur detective skills to work… emphasis on amateur.
This is my first review of 2020 and while technically I finished this book in 2019, I did not have time like I wanted to get this post written ahead of time (I also did not get the chance to finish the last 50 pages of Girls with Sharp Sticks but I have been sick so...). Anyhow as many of you already know I am in love with the Giant Days series and I am deeply sad and in denial that the series is ending soon. (Also still always awaiting the come back of Saga). On Christmas Eve Eve my husband and I were puppy sitting for his parents while they were driving back from the airport with his sister and once the puppy finally decided to take settle down a little bit (after several hours of playing) I got the chance to read this volume of Giant Days (which was the perfect size because the puppy did not rest for long) and let me just say I absolutely adored this volume!
SPOILERS AHEAD (but not too many because we are very far into the series)
The Dark Nebula comic book shop where Esther has been working for a little while now has been experiencing theft! This theft is hurting the business greatly and none other than Susan is on the case. She is going to figure out who is stealing from the store and help them recover from these thefts. In this volume we watch Susan put on her L.A. Noire detective hat while our other ladies follow her on the journey to catch the thief and get the merchandise back to the store.
I already said it above but I will say it again! I adore this volume! It was just what I needed and it was perfect. Getting to watch detective Susan and the other two girls following her as she uncovers who is stealing from the shop and why is such a cute little mystery. I know this is not essential to the main plotline but it was by far one of my favorite little side journeys we have been on with our trio. I am giving this volume all the stars on Goodreads and I supremely look forward to reading it again soon. It is definitely in my top five volumes of this series.
A perfect issue of Giant Days. The plot was entirely contained within this one book, and I'm enjoying the little random, cryptic scenes they've had at the end of each issue following Daisy's driver's ed classes and ending with a random cliffhanger that may or may not get paid off. It's hilarious and wonderfully weird. The entire first page was also a masterpiece. All the cameos of other books (Nimona, Prince & the Dressmaker, By Night, Backstagers, Lumberjanes, Steven Universe, Adventure Time, Over the Garden Wall, Blankets, Tank Girl, Spider-Gwen... just to name a few) were entertaining and felt like a treasure hunt trying to identify. I don't know if so many cameos have appeared in the other comic shop scenes, but if they have, I certainly haven't seen them. The black-and-white segments with Susan were amazing, mixing the feelings of John Mulaney's Street Smarts and Spider-Man Noir in my mind. Anytime McGraw appears on page I get excited since literally all of his lines are perfectly funny. His two small sections in this issue were well deserved. This issue mainly reminded me why I love Giant Days, and why it's one of the best comic series out there. It's funnier than a sitcom, better drawn than most comics, and has more hearts than a milion Grinches.
A weird little bottle issue with Susan playing detective. Didn't have any real surprises or fun asides. Plus, spending so much time watching Magnum, P.I. lately, you really have to be on your A Game to beat that show for funny Noir-parody voice over work...
Not an amazing issue but self-contained and fun. Susan P.I. didn’t blow me away but mixing up the color scheme was fun enough. Have a feeling I’ll enjoy the next issue more, with Daisy’s impending driving test...
I am constantly amazed by the sheer amount of adventures these girls can get into. You’d think at some point they’d run out of ideas, but not yet! This is a Suzie heavy issue, but Daisy and Esther both play parts as well. On the whole it’s probably the closest to a balanced grouping we’ve seen in a while. This was a pretty funny issue on the whole. A lot of detective noir humor, and a couple comic books and figure references (most of the latter of which Suzie didn’t understand, naturally). The baffled father was probably the funniest point in the plot, at least in my opinion. I can’t shake this feeling that there’s something happening behind the scenes. Maybe that just means that I’ve been reading too many thrillers lately. Or maybe something really is up, I’m not sure. I adore McGraw so I’m sincerely not looking for anything nefarious on his part. I think he’s just planning a surprise or something. He’s totally the type to play the long game when it comes to surprises, even if it means that Suzie will kick his butt.
Oh Susan! This single issue was more on Susan and I for one was happy to read about her. Susan as a sleuth was pretty funny to read and I loved how it showed more of her character and her love of things noire.
I loved the black and white panels among the color ones as it propelled the story just beautifully among the theme and plot of this single issue while hinting at where Daisy and Esther are both in Susan's sleuthing but also in their own lives and the few McGraw cameos were golden!
Looooved it. This series is always enjoyable for me because the characters are just so kooky and fun to follow. I loved Susan's detective skills and the callback to a past issue where her sleuthing also led to crazy shenanigans. Plus calling McGraw to find out what pipe on a house was best for shimming up sneakily was great.
This series always puts a smile on my face and I just love it.
Susan darl, if you're listening (or any of your cosplay fans), I could really use £700 right now so hand me the blue flame Vegeta and set your task. Tenacity is my middle name! Well, hifinated right after 'money-hungry' of course haha!
> Readers have been saying this series is taking a turn for the worst which had me nervous but I truly love the direction this is heading in. Subtle changes to keep the story and it's charecters remaining fresh. The influx of new pop culture references makes me feel like this is literally being written for me; to me. I feel like I'm part of the gang! (hence the opening statement to the review ;p)
The L.A Noire art in this issue had me CACKLING. Sure this wasn't much of a follow on for the story but overall it was just fun. My heart remains warm.
