Experiences in translation
In this book Umberto Eco argues that translation is not about comparing two languages, but about the interpretation of a text in two different languages, thus involving a shift between cultures. An author whose works have appeared in many languages, Eco is also the translator of G?rard de Nerval's Sylvie and Raymond Queneau's Exercices de style from French into Italian. In Experiences in Translation he draws on his substantial practical experience to identify and discuss some central problems of translation. As he convincingly demonstrates, a translation can express an evident deep sense of a text even when violating both lexical and referential faithfulness. Depicting translation as a semiotic task, he uses a wide range of source materials as illustration: the translations of his own and other novels, translations of the dialogue of American films into Italian, and various versions of the Bible. In the second part of his study he deals with translation theories proposed by Jakobson, Steiner, Peirce, and others.
Overall, Eco identifies the different types of interpretive acts that count as translation. An enticing new typology emerges, based on his insistence on a common-sense approach and the necessity of taking a critical stance.

In English, he is best known for his popular 1980 novel The Name of the Rose, a historical mystery combining semiotics in fiction with biblical analysis, medieval studies and literary theory, as well as Foucault's Pendulum, his 1988 novel which touches on similar themes.
Eco wrote prolifically throughout his life, with his output including children's books, translations from French and English, in addition to a twice-monthly newspaper column "La Bustina di Minerva" (Minerva's Matchbook) in the magazine L'Espresso beginning in 1985, with his last column (a critical appraisal of the Romantic paintings of Francesco Hayez) appearing 27 January 2016. “Дори в най-добрия случай един превод казва почти същото нещо.”
Спомням си, че всеки път, когато се сещах какво учи една от съквартирантките ми в Лондон – а именно, магистратура по “езици”, отказвах да възприема, че такава програма наистина съществува. И не, не говорим за изучаване на конкретен език в рамките на филологическа специалност, а (вероятно) за изучаване на езика като феномен. “Да кажеш почти същото” отново ме върна към този спомен, защото проблемите, които поставя езика като средство за общуване и в частност, обмена на послания от един език на друг, не са малко.
И наистина, отвъд баналното общуване, което не създава кой знае колко проблеми за добрия преводач, всеки език съдържа специфики, които ни поставят пред неразрешими ситуации. Как например да преведем френската дума “flâner” (която дължим на Бодлер), шведската “lagom”, немската “Vorfreude”. На ниво индивидуален опит, винаги ме е затруднявало намирането на директен еквивалент на думите “infer” и “insight” на български език.
И за да съм докрай честна, книгата на Еко не предоставя отговори, поне не директни, на проблемните ситуации в превода. Тя не е практическо ръководство за гасене на лингвистични пожари. Нищо чудно заради сложната терминология и пространните философски разсъждения след нея да се чувствате още по-объркани.
Но понякога се случва все още да нямаме решение, само защото не сме си формулирали проблема, пред който ни изправя някаква езикова ситуация. “Да кажеш почти същото” маркира проблемите, или поне някои от тях, дава изобилие от примери за успешното им или не дотам преодоляване, което никак не е малко. Възможно е да заинтересува и запалени лингвисти, които просто се вълнуват от проблемите на езика. Така или иначе, трябва да предупредя, че книгата не е за неподготвени читатели, сред които причислявам и себе си. Да, ерудицията на Еко е титанична и доста мощно заявена в тази книга, като се долавя и авторовата презумпция, че читателят би трябвало да е възприемчив към тази ерудиция.
И все пак, кое отличава добрият превод от посредствения? Може ли да се жертва верността към оригинала за сметка на други аспекти и ако да, кои, и, най-вече – докъде? Къде свършва промяната и започва подмяната? От гледна точка на преводача (още по-голям поклон и респект след прочитането на книгата) тези въпроси едва ли имат отговор, поне не и извън контекста. От читателската камбанария обаче добрият превод винаги се усеща, разпознава и оценява като такъв. Особено когато въпросният читател е на “ти” с родния си език.

الترجمة بالنسبة لإيكو هي "أن تقول الشيء نفسه تقريباً"، تبدو عبارة جميلة لتعريف الترجمة، لكن .. مالمقصود بتقريباً؟ هذا الكتاب هو شرح للمقصود بـ"الشيء" و "تقريباً" في عملية الترجمة. المؤلف لم يرد تقديم نظرية جديدة في الترجمة، بل قدم طرحاً عملياً مليئاً بالأمثلة بمختلف اللغات (الإنجليزية والإيطالية و الفرنسية والأسبانية) -التي لم أفهمها كلها بطبيعة الحال- مُستمدة من تجارب إيكو الشخصية في الترجمة غالباً، عن قضايا وعقبات وقفت أمام ترجماته لكتب كلاسيكية، وترجمات رواياته ("اسم الوردة" و "بندول فوكو" إلخ) حيث نرى هذه المشاكل بزوايا مُختلفة مع تنقيدات وحلول عملية مُقترحة عوضاً عن حلول نظرية. بالطبع لايعني هذا بأن الكتاب خالٍ من التنظير، أو أن إيكو لا ينطلق من منهجية نظرية معينة، (بل حتى أن الجزء الثاني من الكتاب فيه مناقشات فلسفية بحتة حول أمور عديدة من أهمها التأويل) لكن خطة إمبرتو في الكتاب عملية أكثر منها نظرية. يمكن أن أُلخص فكرة الكتاب الرئيسية -باختصار مُخل- بالقول: أن الترجمة عملية أخص من التأويل؛ فالتأويل مرحلة -ولابد- تسبق الترجمة. كل ترجمة هي عملية تأويلية بالضرورة، لكن ليس كل تأويل هو ترجمة. وتُوصف الترجمة -حسب إيكو- على أنها عملية تفاوض، وكأي عملية تفاوض فأنت ستخسر شيئاً، وتربح أخرا، ستجد حلولاً مُفضلة في ترجمة نص معين، وحلولاً مُفضلة في نص مُختلف، وهكذا. إذن، لاتوجد قاعدة عامة لكل نص، بل يوجد تفاوض.

I came across this recently, and reading up on it, it got me thinking of the essays of Roland Barthes, of whom I am a big fan. This was a thought-provoking read, and Eco writes with much vigour on the theory of translation. Based on a series of lectures Eco gave back in 1998, he covers many of the most significant issues in the field of translation, providing examples, mostly from his own experiences, both as a translator and as an author whose books have been translated by others.
Divided into two parts, he first looks at his personal experiences, and then later it becomes more theoretical in nature, which I admit, did go over my head at times. He details his translation of Queneau's Exercices de style, looks at the French and Italian translations of Joyce's Finnegans Wake, and talks of the clear differences between translating a text and having ones texts translated. This is more of a scholarly work for those with a serious interest in translation, so it's not really a book aimed at the casual reader. Experiences in Translation does not offer an complete in-depth consideration of the subject, but it's a deftly intelligent starting point.

L'ABC DELLA TRADUZIONE
Libro per certi versi pionieristico, saggio sulla traduzione e non solo, provoca e spiega nello stesso momento, racconta l'esperienza di traduzione di Eco e paragona le varie traduzioni che nelle diverse lingue si sono fatte dei suoi libri, identificando problemi e proponendo soluzioni opportune.
Il discorso è impostato sulla forza dell'esempio. Presente una ampia bibliografia, che spazia dalla teoria della traduzione agli studi sui colori, dal libro di letteratura al cinema e alla musica. Completo e molto chiaro nell'esposizione, il libro di Eco va letto almeno una volta da tutti coloro che si interessano alla traduzione.
Libro per certi versi pionieristico, saggio sulla traduzione e non solo, provoca e spiega nello stesso momento, racconta l'esperienza di traduzione di Eco e paragona le varie traduzioni che nelle diverse lingue si sono fatte dei suoi libri, identificando problemi e proponendo soluzioni opportune.

January 27, 2018Here’s a first for me. A possibly great book that I have to abandon. Pity. I simply cannot appreciate it the way it should be. Note to myself: A book about translating literary texts should be read in the original! Or at least the reader should be well versed in the languages in which the examples are written. Alas, almost all of the numerous and long examples have Italian as either the source or the target language (the other one is often French, and occasionally some other language). The text between refers to the examples and left me quite clueless. It’s like listening to the world’s best jokes told in a language you don’t know. Everyone’s laughing, but you. It’s not fun, believe me. After a while it gets tiresome and you find yourself looking for the exit door. Well, I found it. I won’t give this book a star rating - how could I? - but if I knew Italian and French well enough it would probably be a four or five.

Voortreffelijk boek, interessant geschreven, ik hou van hem, wel heel veel Italiaans (logisch natuurlijk) dus als je Italiaans kent zelfs nóg interessanter! Voortreffelijk hij schrijft zo mooi en interessant

و الترجمة كما يقول أحد المفكرين العرب هي نوع من النقد المُتولّد ذاتياً، لأنها حسب فلسفة شلايرماخر الهرمينوطقيه تمّر بمقاربتيّن هما ( جلب القارىء نحو المؤلف )، و ( جلب المؤلف نحو القارىء ) ، فمن يوصل المعنى بالطريقه التي يراها مناسبه بشكل عام هو لم يخّل بروح الترجمه، هو مُترجّم كما يزعّم هيدجر ..
-(هل يجب أن تقود الترجمة القارئ الى فهم العالم اللغوي والثقافي للنص الأصلي، أم أن تحول النص الأصلي لتجعله مقبولاً لدى القارئ في لغة وثقافة النص الهدف؟ على سبيل المثال والشرح لو أخذنا ترجمة هوميروس، هل ينبغي على المترجم أن يحول قراءه إلى قراء يونانيين من زمن هوميروس، أم أن يجبر هوميروس على الكتابة كما لو كان مؤلفاً من زمننا الحاضر؟) وغيرها من التساؤلات الأخرى التي تشغل بال المترجم و القارئ والناقد على حدٍ سواء، يجيب عنها أمبرتو ايكو في مقتبل بحثه حول فنيَات الترجمة بنظرياتها الحرفية بين الالتباس والازدواج ، والتغريب والتأنيس، والتحديث والتعتيق.

يقول هلمسليف : اللغة تتكون من مستوى للتعبير ومستوى للمضمون، تمثل عالم المفاهيم القابلة للتعبير في تلك اللغة. كل المستويين يتكون من شكل وجوهر وكلاهما نتيجة تجزئة للمسترسل
( مادة المضمون ). التي تشكل الجوهر اللغوي والمادي للترجمة.
- من المشاكل التي تواجه المترجم أثناء الترجمة هي المترادفات داخل اللغة الواحدة مما يجعل عملية القبض على المعنى مهمة شائكة. كما أن المعجم والنحو يختلف من لغة الى أخرى، والأصوات التي تعتبر ذات أهمية في لغة ما لا تلقى نفس الصدى في لغة أخرى. كما أن كل لغة تجمع أشكال مختلفة للتعبير مع أشكال مختلفة للمضمون. وهذه الفوارق الجوهرية من لغة إلى أخرى تشكل تحدي للمترجم.
حقيقةً على المترجم أن يكون جريئاً في كثير من الأحيان، ليهمل المدلول الحرفي للفظ الموجود في النص الأصلي، ذلك في سبيل الحفاظ على المعنى العميق الذي استشفه . فالترجمة الحرفية غير ناجعة في كل الأحوال. لا بد من الإحالة في كثير من الأحيان و التي تعد ضرورة من ضرورات الإيحاء الأدبيّ. كما أن هناك "معايير لغوية فقهية" وجب على المترجم عدم الاستخفاف بها أو تجاوزها حتى لا يقع في هفوات لغوية قاتلة .
من كل ذلك نستنج بأنه لا توجد صورة أو و ضعية نمطية محددة للترجمة بل طرق نمطية مختلفة ومفتوحة على أكثر من شكل، وذلك لأسباب تتعلق في مادة اللغة عينها( النظام اللغوي)، منها لأسباب تركيبية، فبعض اللغات تستعمل كلمات مركبة أكثر من غيرها، وبعضها غنية بكلمات أحادية المقطع أكثر من اللغات الأخرى . ناهيك عن النسيج اللحني (الفونيم - العلامة) المتمايزة داخل النظام السيميائي نفسه من لغة لأخرى.
-من الإشكاليات الفلسفية في الترجمة هي التفريق أو إيجاد الرابط الظاهر بين الألوغرافية (متغايرة الشكل) و الأوتوغرافية (ذاتية الشكل) في النظام اللغوي .
الكتاب جداً رائع للمهتمين ب-فنيات وأسس الترجمة .

Много любопитно изследване за проблемите на превода. За мен, като дългогодишен обикновен любител преводач, беше много успокояващо да имам доказателство в защита на тезата, че един превод никога не би могъл да е буквален, ако искаме да сме верни на текста първоизточник. Пък и това далеч не е единствената тематика на книгата, проблемите на превода са толкова подробно разгледани, че на практика е като съвсем нова наука. Аз лично не бих се занимавала с изучаването на такава теория, но за специалистите книгата би била много полезна. Скромният ми съвет е читателите ѝ да са по-добре запознати с френския и италианския език, тъй като по голямата част от примерите са на тези езици, по-малко са на английски и немски, което може да се окаже спънка.

141214: just a note: i am glad there are translators, i have read over a third books from languages other than english, if i had wanted to read anything like that in the original language i would need to know... french, japanese, portuguese, italian, spanish, german, russian, dutch, chinese, indian, egyptian, austrian, polish, swedish, finn, hungarian, czech, vietnamese, belgian, israeli, arabic, sinhala... so i am glad there are translators. first half of this book is personal, about his own work being translated. second half is more technical and theoretical...

وصلت في الكتاب لصفحة 227 ، أي تقريبا نصفه، وقررت ألا أُنهيه

وطبعا الكتاب مُترجَم للعربية فالنص الأصلي هو المُترجم والمكتوب بالعربية ولكن في الكتاب العديد من الامثلة التي يشرح من خلالها الكاتب فتكون بإحدى هذه اللغات، فأنت لو تعرف هذه اللغات الاربع او عالأقل اثنان منهم فستفهم بصورة أفضل في كثير من المواضع ما يود الكاتب توضيحه من خلال هذه الأمثله ❤️

Книга про базові речі, що цілком вибудована на практичних прикладах перекладів трьома різними мовами, дві з яких я не знаю. Звісно, якби я мав ту базу, робота Еко стала б для мене чудовою хрестоматією у довісок. Звісно, але.
Та, я чимало із книги дізнався, але був би я студентом першого-другого курсу на відділку перекладу, чи якби хоч коли отримував вищу освіту за близьким фахом, вона б, може, мала від мене значно вищу оцінку.

Umberto Eco says that, if one wants to write about translation, one should either have translated, or have been translated. (There might have been a third option, but I loaned my copy of the book and I can neither recall it, nor look it up.) It's not enough to have studied the phenomenon.
I'm actually in agreement with Eco about this, as well as a number of other things. We had a class on translations while I was studying for my Master's Degree and it was quite removed from reality - not only didn't it teach anything regarding technology (to be fair, neither does Eco), but it seemed to be unaware of things such as audiences or levels of transcreation. We were told even that some things "cannot be translated", thus ignoring the fact that they very much are, in practice.
Umberto Eco manages to explain the actual challenges and workarounds, though - mostly on texts he worked on. It can seem very self-centered, I suppose, until you realize the alternative would be for him to talk of situations he doesn't have direct knowledge of (can you explain the thought process of translators you've never talked to with the same accuracy with which you can explain thought processes of translators who explained them to you?).
A downside of the book is that Umberto Eco was a renowned author and scholar, which placed him in a position of privilege: he could afford to spend years translating a book; he was in contact with people who wanted things to go well, above all else; and he could pick and choose his projects. That means his interaction with translation was in the best case scenario - and with only one type of works. So, he speaks of very referential and stylistically challenging translations.
In a sense, that's one peak of difficulty, so we get to see a lot of creativity and transcreation at work, which is great. But we don't get to see the negotiations a translator does around bad literature, for example, or around non-fiction. There are some bits that can be applied to translating copy or marketing, but that's an inference for readers to make, rather than something in the book itself.
What we get instead is a discussion of translation vs. interpretation, which is great, but, in practice, it might feel intuitive to most readers.
It's still a great introduction to the field and to what one does when translating (as opposed to just replacing one word in a language with another word in another language). And despite the fact that the only language I have in common with Umberto Eco is English, so I couldn't understand the various excerpts in all their variations across languages and cultures, he does a great job explaining their stronger and weaker points, how choices were made, what was sacrificed in translation and what was gained.
All in all, good volume - good enough that I'm recommending it to someone who's starting out in the field.

I rate the book four stars. Yet I did not like it. I did not like it because it is exhaustive. And it is, ironically, credible because of that only!
I don't like Eco's almost egoistic claim at the beginning of the book - only those who translate and have been translated can write on translation. Hello?! What about the rest of 99.99% of people who want to write about translation? But then I like his personal account of each book that he translated or got translated. That was good. But was I the only one who felt it was just too personal? His work. His translators. His words. His solutions.
I don't know. If one can get over such trivialities, maybe one would enjoy this very informative book. I? I was unfortunately stuck, and how!

Utilissimo per la tesi, purtroppo non arrotondo a quattro stelle perché la parte che mi avrebbe permesso di evitare di leggermi un altro manuale di 400 pagine era troppo sintetica... Eco non si smentisce mai però, fantastico come sia stato un romanziere a volte anche un po' prolisso nelle descrizioni, ma al tempo stesso un saggista dotato del dono della sintesi.

Interessantissimo, forse perché tratta principalmente delle traduzioni in lingue che conosco e quindi gli esempi sono stati, per una volta finalmente (per quanto riguarda Eco almeno) chiarificatori e non "complicatori". Alcuni degli esempi mi erano noti, altri no, ma tutti sono serviti a darmi una chiara idea di quanto ci sia dietro ad un processo accurato di traduzine e soprattutto a gioire del fatto che non sia uno dei miei lavori :)

The first part: "Translating and being translated" is just plain fun; I love the pragmatic tone of Eco in this part. This is how translation should be taught. And let's not forget that Eco the novelist, with his support for creative translations, is a godsend for his translators. He is genuinely intrigued by the solutions people come up with for his stylistic devices rather than being protective of his "original text".
The second part "Translation and Interpretation" is a bit more academic. It touches on Eco's profession as a semiotician, so it would only be interesting for those who are into that discipline.
Some of the first chapters must be read by translation students, especially in their first year or so, if only to introduce them to real-life applications of translation theory.

Эко не виноват, конечно, в том, что эта книжка устарела с одной стороны, а с другой лично я ее слишком поздно прочел. На третьем курсе цены бы ей, наверное, не было, но когда я учился на третьем курсе, ее не существовало. Сейчас же как-то прям жалко тратить время на бородатые анекдоты про "вавилонскую рыбку" и туманные рассуждения о семантических схемах в голове сферической проекции переводчика в вакууме, излагаемые человеком, который сам перевел примерно пару книжек. Ничего нового.

Sicuramente testo imprescindibile per gli studiosi di traduzione, ergo... avrei dovuto leggerlo prima o poi. Alcuni saggi sono meno interessanti di altri, ma in sostanza è un validissimo materiale di approfondimento linguistico.

I finally found the time to read a whole book. Damn. I missed this feeling.
So, to keep this review short and simple... this book is boring, too descriptive and it has no essence whatsoever. As someone who works as a translator, there is barely any helpful information, more than half of the book is rambling and talking off the subject and I was extremely disappointed and unsatisfied. I regret spending my money.

الغريب بالرغم من أن الكتاب يتحدث عن الترجمة إلا أن المترجم السيد أحمد لم يترجم كثير من أمثلة إيكو... أعلم أن الكثير من هذه الأمثلة بعدة لغات ولكن هنالك أيضا الكثير من الأمثلة بالايطالية التي من الواضح أن ايكو قصد بها القارئ الايطالي لفهم التعدد في الاسلوب داخل اللغة الواحدة... لا شك أن هكذا ترجمة تحتاج لجهد ووقت لكن السيد الصمعي لم يترجم سوا الاقتباسات من اسم الوردة وجزيرة اليوم السابق اللذان ترجمهما سابقا مما يوحي بقليل من التكاسل!

Эко жонглирует итальянским, французским, английским, немецким, испанским языками (бедняга переводчик: ему пришлось переводить не только книгу, но и бесчисленные переводы на язык родных осин); предстаёт и читателем, и редактором, и переводчиком, и жертвой переводчика; пытается (заведомо безуспешно, разумеется), найти ту точку, в которой перевод сможет наконец балансировать между красотой и верностью...
К сожалению (о горе мне, горе!) жертвами кризисных сокращений в российских издательствах, даже великолепного Corpus, очевидно, стали редакторы и корректоры. Чем же ещё объяснить, что сложно устроенный, с целой системой ссылок, комментариев и автокомментариев, текст на полудюжине языков, который, казалось бы, просто кричит: "Редактируйте меня внимательнее! Вычитайте меня полностью!" — этот самый сложнейший текст кишит опечатками самого нелепого рода.
Я говорю об опечатках, возникающих при сканировании — когда программа, распознающая текст, принимает символы одного алфавита за другие. И вот испанское oro превращается в ого, pienė — в p1enė, eryan — в егуап. ЕГУАП, КАРЛ!
(есть и прочие нелепости вроде jamp вместо jump или изредка путающейся нумерации примечаний, но это уже мелочи)

I started to read this book several years ago and, without knowing why, set it aside. My copy ended up in the wrong country for a while, and recently I had an itch to get it back and finish it, so I did. Well, I got it back. I didn't finish it.
Eco is just too clever for me. Or, rather, he spends too much time making sure he comes across as clever.
I found the part of _Decir casi lo mismo_ that I read to be quite empty, useless, and -- as usual -- more about Eco than about the purported subject matter. He takes ages and pages to make a pedantic point which isn't worth making and whose conclusion, generally, can anyway be reached by simply glancing at the accompanying examples or tables. Commentary full of annoyingly overdone cleverness.
Not worth going on through all 500 pages.

Асилил наконец-то))))) Правда, признаюсь, что последние четыре главы — с большим трудом. Отсутствие постоянного контакта с теорией, безусловно, сказывается. Зато первая половина зашла на ура, позволив — пусть совсем чуть-чуть и весьма поверхностно, — но все же соприкоснуться с теми проблемами, с которыми приходится иметь дело литпереводчикам. И разумеется, отдельное chapeau Андрею Ковалю, который _это_ умудрился перевести.
Ну а главная мысль оказалась там, где ей и положено быть, — в самом конце: «Если вы посмотрите в любой словарь, то увидите, что среди синонимов слова fedeltà («верность») ��ет слова esattezza («точность»). Зато там есть такие слова, как lealtà («честность»), onestà («порядочность»), rispetto («уважение») и pietà («преданность, почтение»)». (Eco. Dire Quasi La Stessa Cosa)

Non è un libro di teoria della traduzione, ma sulla traduzione.
Ebbene, chiarito questo, cosa che peraltro fa subito anche l'autore nell'introduzione, è un bel libro di narrativa. È uno di quei libri che consiglierei a chi vuole capire come funziona il mondo della traduzione partendo da zero; per chi sia curioso di identificare quali siano i problemi che deve affrontare un traduttore e in generale per guardare al libro dal suo punto di vista.
Per questo non direi sia un libro "per traduttori", in quanto spesso non vengono tratte regole generali, ma sono solo elencati esempi di problemi specifici e loro soluzioni. Il vero e forse unico capitolo teorico è il settimo.
