Geoff Johns originally hails from Detroit, Michigan. He attended Michigan State University, where he earned a degree in Media Arts and Film. He moved to Los Angeles in the late 1990s in search of work within the film industry. Through perseverance, Geoff ended up as the assistant to Richard Donner, working on Conspiracy Theory and Lethal Weapon 4. During that time, he also began his comics career writing Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E. and JSA (co-written with David S. Goyer) for DC Comics. He worked with Richard Donner for four years, leaving the company to pursue writing full-time.
His first comics assignments led to a critically acclaimed five-year run on the The Flash. Since then, he has quickly become one of the most popular and prolific comics writers today, working on such titles including a highly successful re-imagining of Green Lantern, Action Comics (co-written with Richard Donner), Teen Titans, Justice Society of America, Infinite Crisis and the experimental breakout hit series 52 for DC with Grant Morrison, Greg Rucka and Mark Waid. Geoff received the Wizard Fan Award for Breakout Talent of 2002 and Writer of the Year for 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008 as well as the CBG Writer of the Year 2003 thru 2005, 2007 and CBG Best Comic Book Series for JSA 2001 thru 2005. Geoff also developed BLADE: THE SERIES with David S. Goyer, as well as penned the acclaimed “Legion” episode of SMALLVILLE. He also served as staff writer for the fourth season of ROBOT CHICKEN.
Geoff recently became a New York Times Bestselling author with the graphic novel Superman: Brainiac with art by Gary Frank.
I felt like this was a little of a step down from the previous issue. Felt like more of a setup for future issues. At times it felt very YAish in nature.
An interesting, if slightly meandering follow up to the first issue that mostly just feels like set up for stuff that's going to make up the rest of the arc. I was also a kinda upset to find that the Mary Marvel back up didn't keep going as it was my favorite part of the first issue and felt like it was setting up for something of it's own.
After reading the first two issues, I think I'll pass on this series! I was excited about this series with Shazam's new movie coming up and Geoff Johns writing it! But I was overall disappointed with this one, the writing and story just honestly were pretty boring, and I usually like Johns's books. I think many others may enjoy this series, but it's just not for me!
NON-SPOILER REVIEW: I enjoyed it but got bored. The characters and their interactions were, once again, fun to read and the plot id interesting enough for me to keep reading, but quite slow.
There were a lot of things to like in this. The outline on the Mind encyclopedia page was really clever. The full-page introduction of Funland was gorgeous. Mary being the "mom" of the group. And especially Rosa's phone-call/concerns regarding Billy's father. I think Rosa called out everything I had been thinking, which avoided some serious plot-holes.
Johns juggles a lot of characters and each has their own voice, and the dialogue is crowded but never feels forced. I liked this. I never came about to *loving* this, but there's enough neat moments that I caught myself smiling.

I think this issue tried to handle a bit too much-jumping around three storylines in ~15 pages. My favorite storyline in this one was actually not the one with the kids, but the one with the adults, though I truly enjoyed more the concept because nothing much happened except Rosa getting (rightfully) mad.
The kids storyline was also just a lot of build-up, as was Dr. Sivana's, but because the kids' storyline was the longest it felt like more should have happened (I mean, stuff did happen in Dr. Sivana's line so good for that.)
I'll continue reading because I love Billy but I wasn't happy with this issue.
Many interesting things in so little pages. In one hand we get to see again Dr. Sivana, the villian we discover in the movie, and with the worm that appears in the postcredit scene. They appear in this book but not much, just enought to catch our attention. And in the other hand we follow the Shazam Family through their travel into the Funlands, where everything seems too good to be true... And we meet King Kid. I'm dying for the next one!
Once again the author has pulled me into this magical place, Funland . It reads very fast, and before you know it, the story is over, until the next issue. I can't wait to read more. Thank you to Geoff and the entire Shazam team.

Thoughts after reading this issue: - Could this art be any more beautiful?? Case in point: - You get to see so much more of the characters. The kids really start to develop and they are all unique. Also, Rosa has so much passion and love for the kids! I love the inclusion of the scene where she is on the phone and afterwards where - I am so curious about what is going on with the whole back at home. - Enter the villain! - That train scene was so thrilling! So beautiful, just look at it! - Mary is hella annoying. I hate her. She needs to lighten up! She ruins the fun of the adventure aspect. - I want the Shazam origin story already! And I think it might be coming soon... - WHO ON EARTH IS ? That ending left me wanting the next issue straight away.
All in all, a great issue that was fun, creative, exploratory, and miles better than the first in my opinion. Check out my review for issue #1! Check out my review for issue #3!["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
I've really enjoyed the first two issues of this series. The story is typical Johns; pretty good. The art by Marco Santucci and Mike Atiyeh is terrific!
Mr. Mind one of the leader (I suppose) finally came in with Dr. Sivana which being controlled by Mr. Mind. This issue focus on the first stop that Billy and his brothers and sisters visit, named Funland, where they thought the land is the safest among the other six lands.
