One of the things that has drawn Rich to the post-apocalyptic genre is how it resets everything.
"The rules of society get turned on their head. What's important immediately becomes very Maslowian. In the case of the zombie plague, safety even takes precedence over the physiological needs. How people would react to that situation is fascinating to me. I try to weave many different perspectives into my writing because no two people, or two groups of people, will have the same reaction. It makes for some interesting scenarios and unlimited causes of conflict."
The novella The Gathering Horde and the follow up novel Roads Less Traveled explore just such a universe of events. The third book in the Zed's World series is almost done, so now is a great time to get caught up on what happened so far...
These are part of a series and while individual characters’ story arcs diverge after the 1st book, Five Roads to Texas - they also start to come back together in some ways. Definitely best to listen to them in order (and all of them!). Also, this review may contain spoilers to previous books.
I’m really into this series. It continues to be a great mix of emotions, action, and thriller. The last we heard about Sarah & Charlie Washburn, they were escaping the collapsing Beaumont Medical Center with a few others. Little do they know that Leonard’s decision to grab a souvenir is going to lead to the fight of their lives.
A lot less Zombie fighting and more Good v Evil. No complaints. I liked all the perspectives in this one - especially the Iranian soldiers. It adds so much depth to the story and provides a lot of insight into many “combat” scenes.
As always, I’m crushed by those that are lost. There are no “red shirts” in these stories. Never know who is going to survive.
I’m looking forward to catching up with Sydney in book 6, The Road to Hell.
Narration: Andrew B Wehrlen continues to do a great job with the narration. Lots of voices, accents, emotions to work with. Consistent and smooth transition between characters. He makes these so easy to binge.
Sarah Washburn made it to El Paso and Ft. Bliss with her husband who was infected and her father-in-law only to have to go on the run again. Leaving her husband behind, she and her FIL seek refuge with the Ute tribe in Colorado. During the escape from Beaumont Medical Center, a member of her group takes a package left by Dr. Sanjay. Now, her entire group, as well as the inhabitants near Chimney Rock, are in grave danger from those that seek to recover the package.
Baker’s novel, Showdown At Chimney Rock, Sarah’s Run, is the fifth book in the Five Roads To Texas series. It wasn’t until I started writing this review and went to Amazon to get the complete title that I realized this was Sarah’s story. I felt the book was evenly divided among the characters at first. But, now that I think about it I can see that Sarah had a more defined story.
This is a very sad book in that so many good characters die and not by the hands of the zombies. In fact, the zombie role is almost a comical relief. The last chapter totally made the book and had me cheering.
Disclaimer. I had requested and received audible version of this book for free from the narrator, in exchange for an unbiased review.
What I liked about the book - I started listening to this fifth of the series immediately after finishing the fourth - "Convergence: The Far Side of Hell." This fifth book further builds the engrossing world of the series. Another set of great characters that are "real" and make you root for them. The story is tight and moves at a comfortable pace. It kept me entertained throughout.
What I disliked about the book - Nothing specific that I can think of.
Narration - Narration by Andrew B. Wehrlen was perfect. When is it not?
Andrew B Wehrlen is such an amazing narrator. I am so glad he is doing this series. This story has so many angles, so many twists & turns and many characters. I am glad the series is done in installments focusing on different groups and plots. I mixed them up and read book six before this one but it didn’t spoil anything for me. If you like zombie books that don’t necessarily focus in just the zombies then you will love this one. I highly recommend this series & the audio books!
I was voluntarily provided this review copy at no charge by the author, publisher and or narrator.
I'm the first Five Roads book, I really took a liking to Sarah and the gang she ran with to get to El Paso. It was great to finally get to read Rich Baker's continuation of her story.
I enjoyed following both the good guys AND the bad guys in this one. It gave us an insight into what the baddies were thinking and their goals and objectives. Really made the book have a different feel than the previous stories, which I liked.
I look forward to more of this story by Rich Baker as he continues unveiling more of this weird new world.
I am completely hooked on this series. Great characters in Showdown At Chimney Rock. The action is fast paced and the story is well written. If you haven't read any of the Five Roads to Texas novels yet you are missing out on a great zombie apocalypse series. I highly recommend this book and the entire series from multiple authors.
Audible:Another fun listen into the world of the five roads to texas world. Dr Sanjay, the betrayer, is betrayed, but by who?Things go to heck when the 'badder' guys try to find information they believe was stolen from Sanjays office.Andrew B Wehrlen does a nice job narrating this series.I was given this book by the narrator, author or publisher free for an honest review.
Excellent, excellent, excellent! That is how I feel about this book as well as the entire series. This series is written by various authors who have written their own stories to keep up with the theme of the story. I give them all five stars!
Sarah is a bad ass, I enjoyed this story very much. I look forward to reading more about Sarah & her companions. This group of stories is very well written with interesting characters that you want to know more about.
Rich Baker keeps you on the edge with his storytelling. Sarah has to be one of my favorite characters, she is strong and determined. The USA has been devastated by hordes of zombies, Showdown takes a stand against the hordes and crazy merchs out to take. The gore is insane, be prepared to love this book
This is a very exciting story. It has great characters and tons of action. It was especially fun for me as it takes place in areas near me. Super fun to read.
Once again, the infected are on a rampage and their mean streak is showing. Virologist, Dr. Sanjay assembles some of his testing materials into a package to be delivered upstream to his peers for review. Unfortunately for everyone, a curious young man snatches the package, thus commencing a whole new account of murder and mayhem. Whatever was in that package, others wanted it, and wanted it badly. In the midst of a deadly epidemic, now our survivors had this to deal with. Good story with great characters. Showdown at Chimney Rock: Sarah's Run A Five Roads To Texas Novel, Book 5 : Rich Baker
This is a fast paced, action packed continuation of this series. I was a little leery that this would be the standard post apocalyptic book. I was glad to find a "what if?" book. Good enough I listened in one setting.
The narration was well done. The characters were well portrayed. Andrew B. Wehrlen brought the book to life!
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
I really enjoyed reading this book. The characters are interesting and hilarious. There was a lot of intense action and some humour thrown in the mix. I am off to read the next book.
