Казки роботів
Написані й опубліковані у 1964 році, «Казки роботів» видатного польського фантаста Станіслава Лема вже давно стали класикою НФ. За своїми жанрово-стильовими особливостями – це потішна мішанка традиційної казки і фантастичної літератури. Йдеться тут про мудрий і впорядкований світ роботів, у який прийшли жадібні, жорстокі і владні королі. Так само як і в нас, там також живуть-поживають наївні спасителі світу, котрі переконані в тому, що можна самими лише помислами вибавити людство від зла. У світі оботів із тих благих помислів нічого не виходить. Як лукаво зауважує письменник, «подібне було би і в нас, оскільки зло, як і (на щастя) добро, не хоче викорінюватися зі світу». Тому людство завжди втішатиметься казками. Навіть якщо це казки роботів, а не людей.

In 1957 he published his first non-fiction, philosophical book, Dialogi (Dialogues), one of his two most famous philosophical texts along with Summa Technologiae (1964). The Summa is notable for being a unique analysis of prospective social, cybernetic, and biological advances. In this work, Lem discusses philosophical implications of technologies that were completely in the realm of science fiction then, but are gaining importance today—like, for instance, virtual reality and nanotechnology. Over the next few decades, he published many books, both science fiction and philosophical/futurological, although from the 1980s onwards he tended to concentrate on philosophical texts and essays.
He gained international fame for The Cyberiad, a series of humorous short stories from a mechanical universe ruled by robots, first published in English in 1974. His best-known novels include Solaris (1961), His Master's Voice (Głos pana, 1968), and the late Fiasco (Fiasko, 1987), expressing most strongly his major theme of the futility of mankind's attempts to comprehend the truly alien. Urodziłem się na Ukrainie. Mieszkam w Polsce prawie rok. Na początku miałem pełne wątpliwośći do języka polskiego. Wtedy myślałem, że nie zmogę polubić ten język. Minęło kilka miesięcy i ja zrozumiałem, że nie jest ten język tak zły, jak ja myślałem. Ale kilka tygodni temu mój ojciec poradził mi przeczytać powieści Stanisława Lema. Ojciec dla mnie to najlepszy kolega, z którym ja zawsze mogę porozmawiać, i który nigdy nie poradzi czegoś złego. Więc odrazu poszedłem do biblioteki, gdzie dostałem tą książkę. I teraz, po przeczytaniu "Bajek Robotów", ja chcę podziękować Lemowi za to, że pokazał mi, jaki ten język może być piękny. Myślę, że tłumaczenia nie mogą dać takiej satysfakcji. Połączenie dwóch różnych gatunków literackich, science-fiction i baśnia, w wykonaniu Lema, daje nowy, dla mnie egzotyczny do tej pory styl. Imaginacja Lema poprostu zaskoczyła mnie. Chociaż to nie jest dziwne, bo jestem chyba jeszcze nie zbyt doświadcznym czytelnikiem, więc na mnie czeka jeszcze wiele zaskoczeń.

Another fascinating book by Lem. I generally have little interest in short stories. I prefer longer narratives that I can really invest in. And when I realized these were short science fiction stories, I was skeptical that he would pull it off. Science fiction requires world building (as does fantasy) and integrating character into an unfamiliar universe takes time, which short stories don't afford. Lem solved that issue by writing short stories that are far more like fables or parables. Most provide social critique and commentary and sometimes humor. There were two slightly longer stories toward the end that were not quite novellas, and these were more traditional in style. Still very respectable stories that defy expectations.
What impressed me the most is his incredible creativity. His concepts are rich with imagination and break boundaries. He's incredibly inventive and smashes through traditional techniques. Lem is a true original.

As a long-time fan of Lem's Cyberiad, I knew I had to work my way through all of his short fiction. Mortal Engines works as a theme machine focusing almost entirely on fairy tales for machine-life sentience, and I found most of them DELICIOUSLY funny.
It's hard to do humor right, but Stanislaw Lem has the knack. Just mix real wit and wonderfully skewed perspectives and then shine a bright light on our own idiocy. Give it two shakes and perhaps a short song and voila!
People should really not blow off this old Polish master of SF. They are tight, interesting stories that often bridge the inanity of humanity with philosophy, myth, hardcore satire, and the fundamental awesomeness of speculative fiction.
I may not have fallen in love with all of these stories, but way more than half of them will remain with me for a long time, bringing a smile to my platinum-lined face.

Esta reseña va a ser sencilla y breve.
Libro leído para la lectura conjunta del grupo Ciencia ficción en español, me apetecía un libro de relatos cortos, además de catar así al autor antes de ir a por Solaris. Como todo libro de relatos, tiene algunos buenos, otros menos. Salvo los 3 últimos son todos independientes, y como indica el título, son fábulas con robots como protagonistas. En alguna historia se mencionan los paliduchos, una representación de ser humano, pero muy anecdótico.
Me ha gustado el estilo de escritura, tiene mucha imaginación y hay cosas que realmente habrían dado mucho más de sí. Aunque también hay que decir que las ideas de los relatos no son demasiado originales, la mayoría son historias que podrían tener humanos de protagonistas.
Para primera toma de contacto, ha salido bien parada.

Book read for the joint reading of the Science Fiction group in Spanish, I wanted a book of short stories, as well as tasting the author before going for Solaris. Like any book of short stories, it has some good ones, others less so. Except for the last 3, they are all independent, and as the title indicates, they are fables with robots as protagonists. In some story the pale beings ¿? (sorry, I do not recall the name as it is a translated edition) are mentioned, a representation of a human being, but very anecdotal. I liked the writing style, it has a lot of imagination and there are things that really would have given much more of themselves. Although it must also be said that the ideas of the stories are not very original, most are stories that could have humans as protagonists. For a first contact, it has turned out well.

Powtórzę, co pisałem wcześniej jako update – do teraz zastanawiam się, co by było, gdybym w podstawówce po przerobieniu "Trzech elektrycerzy" na polskim sięgnął po resztę "Bajek"?
+ Lem bywa pomysłowy, trzeba mu to przyznać
+ naukowe uzasadnienie niektórych zjawisk, ciężko żeby nie chwyciły za serce inżyniera
+ komentarze do realnego świata, chociaż mogłoby być ich więcej
- nie każde opowiadanie do mnie trafiło, niektóre mnie męczyły, a w kilku nie widziałem sensu
Lem nie będzie moim ulubionym autorem, to już chyba wiemy. Za jakiś czas przygotuję się do ostatniego, trzeciego podejścia do jego książek, jakim będzie "Niezwyciężony"!

Ehrlich gesagt hatte ich etwas mehr von diesem hochgerühmten Buch erwartet. Lems kreativer Umgang mit der polnischen Sprache hat mit begeistert, als Zweitsprachler aber auch im Lesefluss beschränkt. Vielleicht sollte ich es noch einmal mit einer guten deutschen Übersetzung versuchen? Allerdings haben mich auch die Geschichten an sich nicht wirklich begeistert. Da habe ich an die Erzählungen von Pilot Pirx ganz andere Erinnerungen. Ein herausragende Ausnahme stellt das Märchen "Wie die Welt gerettet wurde" (Jak ocalał świat) dar: Der Konstrukteur Trurl hatte eine Maschine gebaut, die alles mit "N" erschaffen konnte. Als aber sein eifersüchtiger Freud Klapaucius ihr nämlich den Auftrag gab, das "Nichts" zu machen, ließ sie alle Dinge um sie herum verschwinden. Trurl konnte sich gerade noch aufhalten, aber da waren Kambuzeln, Grysmaken, Pćmy und Mrucken schon verschwunden, und wir werde nie mehr erfahren, wie sie ausgesehen haben.

I tried to like this, I tried real hard, and even though it seemed like the stories were getting better closer to the end, the best I can say about this is that it was okay in the end.
The first thing to remember as starting with this book is that these short-stories are just stories, stories and tales, which, by nature, are passed on from one person and generation and culture to another, which transform and change as they are told. This works as both an excuse and a reason to make the stories weird, at parts imprecise, to add information and Stuff that doesn't quite seem to fit. This, again, may result in rich yet heterogenous, simple yet detailed tales that are easy enough to remember and tightly sewn to the culture in which they have born, tales with memorably-named characters, morale and teachings. Hero-tales both work as examples for their hearers, but also point out what doesn't give good results, what is not to be done (because it's been done before and didn't end well even then).
These points considered, I think Mr. Lem managed to stay loyal to the style he chose through the whole book, and this is a great accomplishment in itself. Just this particular style didn't work too well with making the book interesting, seeing the text was without surprises in itself, without interesting quirks or beautiful expressions, standard and dull, and the storylines repeated themselves soon making the contents predictable. So yeah, I was bored with the book right from the beginning, given that some of the clever names of the characters made me giggle at times, and some of the last stories of the book actually managed to differ and be funny, such as About Prince Ferricius and Princess Crystal, and How the World Survived. The White Death and AutoMatthew's Friend were probaby my favourites though.

It's impossible to rate this one, I really enjoyed most of the stories. They are not like Asimov or Dick's work, and in some parts they reminded me of (space) 1001 arabian nights, as weird as it sounds! My favorite story was Automatthews friend 🤭

I found this a difficult read. I'm not a huge fan of the robot fairy tales (which most of the stories in this collection are), and I think it's actually kind of a disservice to those stories to put them all together, as they start to blend together.

December 19, 2021Well now, I loved Lemmy's 'The Futurological Congress' but, 24 pages in, I'm putting this short story collection to one side, at least for now. I should point out that I'm not averse to tales about robots and enjoyed the two collections I read by Asimov. In the introduction, the compiler/translator explains the title's Shakespearean allusion, congratulating himself on his erudition as he does so. Surely, the whole point of such a reference is to allow the reader to work out the associations for her/himself - you know, as in 'Brave New World' or 'The Sound and the Fury'. It set the tone, I'm afraid.
The first story is a kind of fairy tale, featuring robots. It was an entertaining distraction. Ditto, the second tale. Lemmy had obviously been consulting the periodic table as buckets full of obscure chemical elements were chucked into the narrative. When the third such tale made its entrance, I bailed. Life seemed too short. Frigyes Karinthy did the Grimm's robots thing so much better and many years before in 'Voyage to Faremido'.
Can I star rate a book I didn't finish reading? I would suggest not. Sad to say, it was running below two stars when I pressed the ejector seat...

Skaitydamas Lemo „Robotų pasakas“ vis prisimindavau šitą fantastikos klasiko citatą. Ir iš tiesų – pasakos tarsi tokios pačios, kokias girdėdavome/skaitydavome vaikystėje, tik magija čia apsimeta gerai užsimaskavęs mokslas. O gal ir ne taip jau gerai.
Lemo pasakos tuo pat metu paprastos ir sudėtingos. Atpažįstami pasakų archetipai. Ir net nepasakytum, kad labai jau išversti kita puse. Bet Lemas dar prideda savo liūdnokos ironijos, o vietomis nepagaili ir atviros satyros.
Skaityti, žinoma, reikėjo vaikystėje. Bet ir dabar buvo pakankamai įdomu.
Vertinti net kažkaip sudėtinga. Tegul bus keturi iš penkių. Bet turėkit omeny, kad tikslinė auditorija – anaiptol ne žili dėdės, nors paskaito ir tie.

Nisam nikad pročitala išta slično ovom. Lem ima nevjerojatnu maštu, sve frca! Roboti i planeti i ostali kerefeki, ali u formi starinskih bajki. Ipak, nisu mi sve priče bile na istoj razini, na nekima Lem kao da ne zna kontrolirati tu svoju prekrasnu maštu i zaustaviti se kad treba, pa s vremenom zbirka ponešto uspori i krene se vući, unatoč činjenici da je s nekim pričama zaista prekrasno zaokružio ideju.

July 29, 2022Дуже важко писати відгук на цю збірку. З одного боку, вона не викликала в мене емоційного відгуку. Як це було в шкільні часи, коли я вперше спробував прочитати "Казки", так і чверть століття потому, коли я сподівався, що тепер краще зрозумію натяки, іронію та сатиру. На жаль, ці оповідання дуже вкорінені в контекст. І тут як не скористатися цитатою Минуле - чужа країна. Адже контекстом "Казок" є ПНР, тобто соціалістична Польща. І не всього періоду існування (бо про 1980-і маємо Наша маленька ПНР), а наймоторошніших часів - 1950-х. Власне, що я приблизно орієнтуюся, як тоді жилося в СРСР, але ПНР відрізнялася - і то дуже суттєво. В чомусь ситуація була кращою, в чомусь іншою. Але тепер - мені! - достеменно незрозуміло, з кого чи чого сміється Лем. Він висміює конкретні політичні, літературні чи наукові твори? Чи просто робить алюзії на суспільний та політичний лад ПНР?
З іншого боку, відчувається, що це важливий твір для фантастики. В ньому Лем вперше поєднує філософію та фантастику разом. Він іронізує з наукового (сцієнтистського!) світогляду, він висміює тоталітаризми, показуючи, що вони дуже нестабільні в часі. Він висміює тропи наукової фантастики. Втім... Тут я занадто пізно підійшов до цієї збірки. Я вже встиг прочитати частину Апокрифи, де Лем робить те ж саме: поєднує фантастику та філософію. Навіть деякі ідеї подібні, хоча і не дослівно. Я вже встиг прочитати Фіаско, щоб побачити, як Лем висміює стандартні сюжетні ходи фантастики про прибульців. Ясна річ, що "Казки" були першими. Але я до них прийшов з Лемівського "майбутнього", а тому вона для мене вже вторинна.
Мова, спосіб письма з перспективи Іншого - це в Лема виходить просто геніально та шикарно. Стилізації під казки чи легенди європейського середньовіччя та Відродження - просто чудова.
Тому в історії фантастики це важливий твір. Але в моїй особистій колекції Лема залишиться лише одне оповідання - "Біла смерть". Якщо початок там в стилі інших казок - роботи контактують з розбитим кораблем землян, то фінал...

This can be first seen as a collection of sci-fi stories but each story also addresses a philosophical point: from the trial of socrates and absurdism etc. When you notice such references, the stories become even better. I could not get them all, hence 4 stars for me.

Ovo je bilo drugačije. Većinom zabavno i zanimljivo. Kao da čitam bajke, sa svim onim pravilima koje bajke imaju (značenje broja tri, kušnje koje glavni lik/likovi moraju ispuniti da bi dobili kraljevstvo i oženili princezu, pouka priče, nadmudrivanje umišljenih, zlih, pohlepnih vladara i sl.), ALI likovi nisu ljudi, već roboti. Svi su roboti: kraljevi, vitezovi, prinčevi, princeze, mudraci, junaci... i oni imaju/izrađuju robote, bore se s drugim robotima (primjerice zmaj robot). Baš fora.
Ali, nisu mi se sve priče svidjele. One u kojima bi Lem zabrazdio u filozofiranje o ništavilu i inoj problematici, su me prilično smorile i moram priznati nakon što bih završila s čitanjem takve priče, ne bih znala ponoviti što sam pročitala.
Čitala sam paralelno hrvatsko i englesko izdanje i više sam uživala u hrvatskom prijevodu, vjerojatno zbog mnogih tehničkih izraza iz kemije, fizike, matematike, mehanike... s kojima sam na engleskom slabo upoznata. Što se tiče stila pisanja, Lem divno piše. Napisano je baš zvučalo kao bajka, s onim „Jednom davno živio je...“ i drugim bajkovitim konstrukcijama. Koristio je jako zanimljive usporedbe, opisi djeluju kao da priča o stvarnim likovima i događajima. Zle, umišljenje vladare (a i druge likove) je baš zabavno predstavio. Svidjelo mi se kako je odlično opisao robote, s ljudskim karakteristikama, manama i vrlinama.
Pred kraj sam ustanovila da se hrvatski i engleski prijevod razlikuju, tri zadnje priče su drugačije, a u hrvatskom izdanju je bila jedna priča više. Moram reći da su me priče u engleskom izdanju ugodno iznenadile, iako su u nekim trenucima krenule prema dosadi, rasplet je bio neočekivan i sasvim zadovoljavajući.

Oryginalna! To na pewno. Co prawda w opowiadaniach - jak na mój gust - pojawia się zbyt dużo skomplikowanych nazw, imion, określeń. Ale fabularnie na plus. Ciekawy punkt widzenia, coś nietypowego!

Aš nesu didelė literatūrinių pasakų gerbėja - dažniausiai man jose kliūna paties jų autoriaus patirtis (visai nekliūnanti apysakose, apsakymuose ir romanuose), kuri, mano manymu, padaro pasaką nebe pasaka (tai iš esmės aš kabinėjuosi prie sąvokų). Tad nebuvo lengva ir šias skaityti - aš humanitarė, paskutinėse mokyklos klasėse nebesimokiusi chemijos, o su fizika turėjusi grynai matematinį santykį (uždavinį pagal formulę išspręst galiu, su praktiniu pritaikymu reikalai liūdnesni), todėl visai tikiu, kad dalies sluoksnio net nenuskaičiau.
Kas įstrigo - Justino Žilinsko frazė pratarmėje, kad po visko, kas per karą įvyko, Stanislaw nusivylė Dievu. Skaitydama aš tai irgi jutau - kad nors ir smagios, ir su pajuokavimais bei visai gerom pabaigom, jos yra nusivylimo pasakos.

On some level, something must have gotten lost in translation from Polish to German, Lem being a hailed SciFi author and all. The significantly higher ratings in Eastern European seem to indicate that possibility. While the first story was still kind of whimsical, the ones after grew increasingly bland and formulaic. They read like run-of-the-mill fairy tales for toddlers with the added twist that most of the nouns are either replaced or prefixed with a term from chemistry, metallurgy or pre-IC computers and robotics.
I freely admit that expectations definitely contribute to my disappointment, but when I read "robot", Asimov's depictions come to mind, which have no relation to the beings depicted in this book.

Zwlekałam długo z recenzją tej króciutkiej książeczki, bo tak naprawdę nie wiem, co mam o niej powiedzieć, a im więcej czasu upływa, tym mniej mam do powiedzenia. Co więcej zbiór opowiadań traktujących o jednym temacie sprawił, że kompletnie zlały się w mojej głowie i po ledwie dwóch tygodniach od ich przesłuchania praktycznie nic nie pamiętam...
Nie jest to książka zła - niektóre opowiadania naprawdę mnie zaangażowały, ale im bliżej końca, tym bardziej byłam znużona i formą i powtarzającą się tematyką. Na pierwsze spotkanie z Lemem - okay, na zainteresowanie tematem - umiarkowane, ale mam ochotę przeczytać coś jeszcze tego autora. Ale na pewno ani nie zostanie mi w pamięci, ani ni będę jej rozpamiętywać po czasie.
Nie jest to książka zła - niektóre opowiadania naprawdę mnie zaangażowały, ale im bliżej końca, tym bardziej byłam znużona i formą i powtarzającą się tematyką. Na pierwsze spotkanie z Lemem - okay, na zainteresowanie tematem - umiarkowane, ale mam ochotę przeczytać coś jeszcze tego autora. Ale na pewno ani nie zostanie mi w pamięci, ani ni będę jej rozpamiętywać po czasie.

I had fond memories of the The Cyberiad, but I still did not expect to love this as much as I did. The fairy tales for robots that make up the bulk of the collection are charming and hilarious (and occasionally heartbreaking), but it's the final novella"The Mask," with its fascinating exploration of gender and self-determination told in lush prose, that really makes the collection for me. (The other novella, "The Hunt," was the one low point for me--it's not bad, but the writing is clunkier than anything else in the collection. Oh well. No one hits a home run every time.)

Stanislaw Lemin "Konekansan satuja ja tarinoita" sisältää tulevaisuuden faabeleita, opettavaisia "robottitarinoita". Suurin osa tarinoista perustuu teknisillä nimikkeillä kikkailuun ollen valitettavan köyhiä sisällöltään tai juoneltaan. Onneksi joukkoon on kuitenkin osunut muutama oivallinenkin tarina. "Automatiaksen ystävä" on ehdottomasti kirjan paras hetki. Tämän vajaan 30 sivun takia kirja kannattaa hankkia käsiinsä. Muut voikin sitten jättää lukematta.
