Skye MacKinnon is a USA Today & International Bestselling Author whose books are filled with strong heroines who don't have to choose.

She embraces her Scottishness with fantastical Scottish settings and a dash of mythology, no matter if she's writing about Celtic gods, cat shifters, or the streets of Edinburgh.

When she's not typing away at her favourite cafe, Skye loves dried mango, as much exotic tea as she can squeeze into her cupboards, and being covered in pet hair by her tiny black cat (who's secretly a demon).

My new favourite audiobook. I absolutely loved this book. It’s cat-women/batman meets cozy mystery. Melody narrators this beautifully and I felt connected to the feminine world. Kat is a cat shifter. She would do anything to get rid of her collar but like most cats she’s very self involved. When a mystery man offer her the freedom she craves she must solve a case. She usually works as an assassin but as this new mystery unfolds she can see the advantages of asking questions first. The story is gritty and needs the help of Kats friends.

This is a lengthy read but offers the promise of more.

ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Ooh 😮 what did I just read ?? Baby I am hooked, line and sinker !!

This was enjoyable and I am happy I invested in this story. It made me giggle 🤭 like a school girl because the puns were adorable 🥰!!

The Story

Kat is a shapeshifter assassin who works for the Pact. She hates her captivity but enjoys the life of being an assassin because it’s all she knows. The world is a sad place in the world Kat lives in. Kat goes to do a job and she is given the opportunity of a lifetime. She can work on her own but she can’t just kill people anymore she finally has to do something a bit different.

When a sweet shop owner is killed suddenly Kat is now on a mission to find out why. The only problem is she doesn’t know why she’s involved in finding out about the murders instead of committing it. The world 🌎 is a dangerous crazy place if people are killing the candy man 👨🏼 🍭.

My thoughts

This was a great first book for a series that seems like it will be lots of fun. This is not my first book by this author but as always I really enjoy the writing style and that I can always read two of her books in a day. They are just long enough to be enjoyable but they don’t drag. Also, who is Kat going to choose to be her man. She has soo many options !!! I vote for Lennox 😍😘!!

Happy reading everyone 💕💕

Moralvorstellungen:
Kat und ihre Mitarbeiter ihrer Auftragsmordagentur namens M.I.A.U.

Hier kommt Annette Kurz dran.

Kat, unser Feminist Icon:

Seriously? And this Skye MacKinnon is a bestselling USA today author? Again, seriously? I can only say based upon the plethora of average reads of late how overvalued and questionable this honour is since every author going appears to be making the same (lame) claim.

I was just so bored. I stopped at the 62% because I just no longer cared. Not about the characters or the answer to who killed the sweet shop owner. The writing; the world building tried to be grim but had little substance to ground it and the author steadily added groups and rules that made little sense to us the reader as we didn't interact with those groups, only heard about them third hand.
Kat, our lead character.... KAT? She's a panther shifter, so get it? Yes, I shall knock you over the head with this two by four because it is just so twee.
Kat's POV is repetitive. I like to kill. But I'm a good (?) kind of killer. Maybe I could get into this investigation biz, no, I would miss killing. Oh, look, a small furry cat that might give me intel and be useful. AND REPEAT two hundred times those exact thoughts and you get to 62%
Except the author at the 50% mark introduces Kat's long lost best friend - and suddenly she is thinking the occasional inappropriate naughty thought about him. And boy, was his escape and years away from the Pack just down right nonsensical. I had no sense of him. And this supposed attraction was beyond ridiculous and stilted.

This was unwieldy story telling at its worst. Bad world building. Worse characters. And a plodding plot that unfolded in excruciating fits and starts.

Kat is a cat shifter assassin who opens her own agency called MEOW. MEOW will be an acronym as soon as Kat figures out what the letters stand for. Her company motto is, "We kill so you don't have to." In addition to three employees, she has a growing collection of neighborhood cats who spy for her in exchange for food.

She's usually the one causing someone to become dead, but when she's offered a gig to investigate the murder of a candy store owner, the money is too good to turn down. But Kat soon discovers there is something much more sinister going on than a simple murder.

MEOW is a humorous, fun, quirky urban fantasy. My favorite line in the book is, "Just because I'm an assassin doesn't mean I can't have morals...I'm basically a nice assassin."

The blurb calls Meow a "slow-burn reverse harem," and the seeds for that romance(s) are sown in this book, but while Kat meets the men with whom she'll have a future relationship, the romances don't occur yet in Meow, and the HFA closure evolves from the candy shop mystery.

I really enjoyed this book, and I'm looking forward to reading the next one in the series, Scratch.

I am a crazy cat lady with a passion for UF. It still wasn't enough for me to like this book. Yes, there's something that could have been. Unfortunately it never developed.
And again I am somewhat disappointed to say that to use a first person Pov you need to be a damn strong writer, and I am even sorrier to say this author isn't.

The NA feeling and fake jaunt was bad in my opinion. You are depicting a very dark world and in it quivering hormones aren't supposed to exist. Or at least they sound pretty bad, even if they are a small thread. And the same I can say for a wit that is very far from the intelligence and cruelty that separates it from its brothers and sisters.

Pity. The potential is there

Hoopla Audiobook.

I didn't like this one.
For starters, the narrator was annoying. Everything was said in a breathy, dramatic voice.

The pacing was weird. It starts with Cat getting caught, and then being given her freedom, a business, and funds by a mysterious mark. The main events of the story happen six months later. By which time she's up and running and has three employees consisting of two other assassins and a thief. It made me wonder how many assassins were in that town.

The story itself was interesting, but I was never really sucked in. I heard a lot about the nature of cats, but I didn't really learn much about Cat herself. For all of her self aggrandizing, we don't actually see that in action. She's sloppy at best, and she gets caught off guard ALL THE TIME. So yeah, it's hard to believe she's a hardcore assassin. Also, the blushing awkwardness around Lennox and Griffin didn't make any sense. Are you an assassin, or are you Maryanne?

I won't be continuing this series.

Meow is the newest book by Skye MacKinnon, and an absolute purr-tastic, meow-larious and claw-ver read.

Kat is a strong badass panther shifter, who’s an assassin and PI. Her team aka Pride, is made up of a team of outcast assassins and ragtag thieves, who work for Kat’s business M.E.O.W.

The banter between and Lily is hilarious and helps so show the depth of friendship early on in the story.

This urban fantasy reverse harem is filled with action, crime, secrets and of course cats, cats and more cats. There’s so many quotes and one liners in this book, that I felt like I was highlighting half the book.

I highly recommend the first book in the Catnip Assassins series and can’t wait for the future books - Scratch and Purrr.

Side note: I love the reader input that has occurred with some of the names of characters and items 💖

*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.

Skye has really created an interesting world in this introduction to a new assassin series. Kat is an assassin that wears a collar that forces her to follow the rules. At least until she is sent on a job where a mysterious man sets her free with the stipulation that she start her own business and take occasional jobs from him. Flash forward six months ans he doing somewhat well when a new case forces her to reevaluate how she does things as well as who she works with. Fantastic world building with lots of twists that will really keep you guessing. If you like cats then you will love this but if not you may want to make a different choice as they play a huge role in this story. I really liked it so I give it 4/5 stars.

Poor world building, initial set up made zero sense, characters were unlikable. Just really not well done. Urban fantasy takes a lot more writing skill than this imo.

I love the paranormal genre, I love shifters and I adore cats and this book here has everything included, so I had high expectations for it and certainly was not disappointed.

The concept of it was thought out well and the storyline was packing. It has a satisfying ending for the first part but also gives hints at what will come in the next books and it definitely sounds promising. It had some surprising plot twists in it and certainly does not back away from darker themes either so this is nothing for weak hearted people (although the fact that she is an assassin already gives some warnings as well of course).

Kat is a great protagonist. She has confidence and I like it a lot that she does her own thing. The best thing for me though, are the scenes in which she talks with the cats. It was certainly a cool idea of the author to get inspiration from real life cats because I could clearly see my own two kittens within some of them (actually practically all of them, when it came to the food discussion). But the discussions themselves were thought out greatly as well because I can imagine that would be the exact way cats would think if they could speak.

Another big plus is the fact that the romance(s) will take their time. We get the two guys already (if my guess about the second one is right) but since this is a series, nothing much has happened yet and this is honestly great. The focus lies on the storyline and the introduction of the characters so far and nothing seems rushed that way. I’m looking forward to how these stories will play out though.

In conclusion, I can say, that the book is a clear recommendation from my side. It has everything I like in a paranormal book and it was thought out implemented really well. I will definitely read more of this series. Therefore, this book gets well deserved five stars from my side.

Skye MacKinnon’s Meow (Catnip Assassins #1) is purrfect. In this story cat shifter/assassin, Kat starts her own business. A client asks her to take on a murder investigation (verses an assassination) with the option to kill the culprit. This contemporary urban fantasy is suitable for adult readers.

I really enjoyed this story. It was unique and entertaining. Skye MacKinnon does a nice job creating the foundation for this series by explaining politics and history in this novel. The characters are likable with a lot of dimensions. I love that Kat has the neighborhood cats working for her. Skye MacKinnon does a great job describing the cats’ attitude. Or is it catitude?

This is the first book that I have read by Skye MacKinnon. I enjoyed her writing style and humor. The book was skillfully written and entertaining throughout. The collard aspect of the story reminded me of Jennifer Ashley’s Shifters Unbound series. I recommend this book to people who enjoy shifter urban fantasies. I’m looking forward to following this series. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.

Not a bad start

This isn’t a terrible start to a new to me series. I kinda like Kat even if she’s an assassin and for someone who is turning into a PI she did fairly well for her first time even if the names were sort of dropped in her lap. Or addresses rather. Still I’m intrigued, it went pretty quickly to read so it must be a shorter book too.

Kat is strong, likable, and a leader. I knew Ryker was suspect, and of course with that cliffhanger I’m wanting to know what happens next. The author also does a fantastic job of showing and not telling, she lives in the now and it’s nice.

There was a spelling error excepted was used in place of expected I believe. Which I did highlight and will be on my goodreads.

I loved loved loved all the cats and kittens. I think that’s my favorite part of this whole thing.

killing for money, human head in the fridge and a friend who enjoys playing with her victims before killing them. Are the characters in this story killers and psychopaths?

This takes the cake:

"She likes to play with her prey when she gets the chance. Sometimes, that involves taking random body parts home to later send them to her marks' families. That may sound evil, but actually, Lily is a really nice girl. She just has a bit of a violent streak."

Wait there's more.

"She's a predator playing with her prey before killing it. She loves to make men go crazy for her, then kills them right when they realise that they've been fooled. Break their hearts before stabbing them. She's evil in a fun way. Just like all of us."

I may need some holy water after reading this particular gem. It feels like I'm rooting for the bad guys so I'll pass.

If I could give this book a negative star review, I would.

It was horrible. I read 25% of it and gave up - and that's saying something. I don't give up on books very easily, and I am typically able to at least complete them before judging. This book is the exception. It's poorly written, (very) poorly edited, makes no sense, and is just plain bad. I received the book free and even that didn't convince me to make it through to the end. Do yourself a favour, read something worthy of your time. This isn't it.

I loved this book

This is the first time I have read a book by this author and I am so glad I took a gamble and purchased Meow. I love the idea of cat and dog shifter assassins and the way the author portrays the heroine is masterful - it's easy to imagine a cat reacting in just such a way if magically given the ability to shift to human. I am now eagerly awaiting the next book in the series

So many delicious supernaturals abound in this purrfectly exciting, sexy tale of cats, kitties, wolves, and humans, and Meow Investigations tackles many problems that exist in the human world, murder, poisoning children, slavery, making Kat, an assassin, change from working alone to gathering a team that will do whatever is necessary to stop The Pack and I can hardly wait to read more of their adventures.

Wow what a wonderful story. There is no way that you are going to put this one down once you start. An assassin that is also a private investigator when her real work is kind of slow. An assassin, sociopath, and catnip addict, Kat, finds herself from going lone panther to surrounded by friends and a team she can trust. This is one life turned upside down, and she has no way of knowing if this is better for her or not. I absolutely fell in love with this novel and if possible, I hope to be able to read the entire series. Now I am one gigantic cat lover, but this novel l is much more than that. Sometimes you just can’t express it all in words, but set aside some time, get yourself some tea or hot chocolate and curl up in the corner and plan for a good old fashioned read. I highly recommend this author and I plan to read more by this author.

2019 bk 388. A decent enough plot and an intriguing idea. It needed an editor who would have repeatedly said - more character development/background for everyone in the group, more details and descriptions. It says it is an alternate universe where the pc / internet havn't been developed, but there are phones and televisions. It read like a cross between victorian London and mid-century America. I didn't get the feeling that it was an alternate universe. I will probably look for the second - just wish there had been more of the first.

Oh, murder did you ask? Yes right up Kay’s alley. She is a panther shifter that has been raised as a assassin. The Pack owns her. She get lucky one day and now has her own assassin business. When she gets a strange job what will she learn? Who will show up to help her? You might just be surprised. This story is a good read for teens on up.

Shifters, assassins and murder

Kat is a trained assassin who is also a panther shifter. Given the chance to operate freely, she hires others to help her, but money is tight, so when offered a job investigating a death, she accepts it but it leads to so much more.
As charming as a story about killers can be, with the cutest associates joining Kat's group. Great fun.

This was just all around really bad.
I have a hard time to even motivate myself to address some of the major issues.

The book tries to be dark and gritty but instead only manages to sound like a self-insert fantasy of a 14-year-old edgelord.
The protagonists have the same issue but additionally, they are somehow supposed to be the good guys and display morals while leading a professional hitmen company? It's all incredibly contrived and unbelievable.
Furthermore, they all constantly pat each other on the back telling each other how badass and edgy they all are which is incredibly cringeworthy. The author is basically smashing the reader's face in with a sledgehammer but a gentle nudge with a feather would've been enough. This... *smash* world... *smash* is... *smash* dark.... *smash* and... *smash* gritty... *smash*.
That issue is compounded by the audiobook narrator who emphasizes every even slightly edgy statement in this wannabe badass way. See the word "death" anywhere, regardless of context? It's not pronounced "death" but "DeaTHHH". It basically throws the biggest flaw of the book in your face constantly. It's so extreme that I have the suspicion that the narrator did this to make fun of the book while appearing to try hard. It sounds much more like a caricature than an honest attempt at engaging narration.

The next big issue is that the author never stops to consider the consequences of all the differences to our world she introduces. Cats with human-level intelligence would never live as strays on the streets. They would inevitably end up as part of society in some way and that is just one example of many.

And there are plot holes. A lot of plot holes. I've read up to roughly 70% before dropping it so I don't know the full extent but it can only have gotten worse from there.

Why this is tagged as RH I couldn't tell. The only love interest appeared very late in the book. It's probably a case of one guy a book or something.
