This book is such a treat. It's the first in Mortina series and has a Halloween theme with the Addams Family-like characters. The MC, Ghoulia is a zombie girl who wants to make friends, while Auntie Departed is nervous and thinks it's best to not mingle.
The illustration is sooo cute. This is an interactive book with matching games, step by step how to dress up as Ghoulia for Halloween, and recipes.
Both audio and printed are amazing, but if I have to choose one, it's definitely the book for the stunning illustrations. Source:Amazon
Sometimes a book comes along at the right time for me and my 7-year-old.
We both found we were instantly into the story of a little girl (who happens to be a zombie) and her desire to make new friends. I think the illustrations were the ticket to instant involvement and the story (both familiar and quirky) was full of surprises from Ghoulia’s weird family to her dog who loves retrieving Ghoulia’s body parts and helping her with her hair dressing.
There are plenty of details to delight from Ghoulia’s detailed plans to make friends with the “normal” town kids, to the treats to serve at a party.
My 7-year-old was able to read most of it herself, but she loved the fact we were doing it (and laughing) together. Cantini nicely addresses the topic: “Making New Friends can be Scary”
I just discovered the Ghoulia series by Barbara Cantini, and it is adorable. Ghoulia is a zombie girl who lives with deceased family members in Crumbling Manor. The books focus on friendship, helping others, and being yourself. The illustrations are so cute and will keep young readers engaged. Ghoulia’s name in the original Italian series is Mortina, which I absolutely love as well!
Ghoulia is a typical little girl ...who happens to be a zombie. She lives in Crumbling Manor with her Auntie Departed and albino greyhound named Tragedy. She loves her home and family but she wishes she could play with the kids in the nearby neighborhood. That seems to be Auntie Departed's only rule: avoid town so the people there don't find out their family secret and drive them out in fear. When Ghoulia learns about Halloween, she hatches a plan to join the neighborhood kids for an evening of trick or treat. An excellent children's book about friendship and acceptance, Ghoulia is a fun book filled with the excitement of Halloween night and the courage to be who you are. I love the message here and the excellent illustrations add an extra level of fun to the overall story. This is a highly promising beginning to a new children's series and I'm already looking forward to Ghoulia's next adventure! Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

This is a wonderful children's book about friendship and acceptance. The story is filled with emotions, great illustrations and courage. The fun of Hallowe'en is also part of the story that children will love. This is a wonderful start to a new children's series and I'm already looking forward to Ghoulia's next adventure! This book would be a great addition to any family, classroom, school or public library. With all the television shows and books about zombies, it is wonderful to see this one for children to enjoy. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book via Netgalley.
Man labai patinka knygos, kurios neša žinutę.
4.5* ... cute, cute, cute! Ghoulia was a star here! She is a little zombie girl who lives in a spooky-sweet manor with her quirky assortment of dead family members. The illustrations here are sooo cute. Very Tim Burton-esque with Addams Family-like characters. This book was so fun for what it is. Ideal for Halloween!
Yesterday, whilst ill in bed, I turned to this little book as a way to occupy some time (if I stop reading completely when I'm ill, you need to be worried, as I am really bad), and it was such a delightful companion to have. Ghoulia is just your run of the mill zombie girl. She enjoys her 'life' but desperately wants to have friends to play with. Fearing that the children from the local town won't accept her, she usually hides away. Until, that is, she comes up with a plan on Halloween. Her plan will mean that she will be able to spend time with the other children, without her unusual appearance drawing too much attention from them. What could possibly go wrong?
I really liked this little tale. Ghoulia is a pretty cute character. I loved how the book was set out - the illustrations cover the whole of the pages, with the text appearing on the edges. This makes this book such a colourful story. As a young reader, I would have loved this book. Hell, as an adult, I loved this book. It would make a wonderful Halloween read.
