Beastars #3

BEASTARS, Vol. 3

Rate this book
At this high school, instead of jocks and nerds, the students are divided into predators and prey.

At a high school where the students are literally divided into predators and prey, it’s personal relationships that maintain the fragile peace. Who among them is a Beastar—an academic and social role model destined to become a leader in a society naturally rife with mistrust?

It’s time for the Festival of the Meteor, a time when the animals honor their extinct dinosaur ancestors. Wolf Legoshi is still inexorably attracted to dwarf rabbit Haru. Is it a crush or bloodlust? Is it her or any small animal? Relationships are complicated for carnivores. Their bird friends lay and sell the eggs they eat, and some desperate herbivores even sell their body parts on the black market. Tiger Bill is tempted to buy a piece and invites Legoshi to indulge with him. But eating meat is highly addictive...

This continues to be emotionally intense (poor Legoshi!) and grapples with some tough issues relating to depression, self-esteem, bullying, peer pressure, toxic *masculinity, romantic and sexual relations and how people treat each other in those relationships, poverty, addiction... This isn't even a full list, probably, and it's not a long book!

I find it especially useful how using animal characters allows the author to explore issues of racism without having to map those concerns directly onto any ethnic group or specific real-world context. Kudos for not being simple-minded with the predator/prey divide (here we get larger prey animals expressing indifference to smaller ones being eaten).
Although now I'm wondering about animals that are not obligate carnivores?

Also, some students finally leave campus. I was picturing them as in the middle of nowhere, but apparently the Academy is in a large city, which looks a bit like Shibuyu and has a seriously sketch red light district.

*It's not labeled as such, and is presented as predator vs prey animals, but I notice that so far no female predators seem to have trouble restraining their violent urges.

3.5 rounded up to 4 because I was dying laughing at this page for a longer time than I care to admit:

😂

Such a strange series ... but quite entertaining. This isn't even really a funny series, it's quite serious in tone, but something about that anthropomorphized chicken just cracked me up.

This series is really hitting home for me now.

Legoshi and Haru make an interesting couple and with the rules of the world established there are great moments for side-characters to shine, specifically here the show is stolen by a Legom, a hen who is (alphabetically) seated next to Legoshi, bringing comic relief from more serious, darker events.

Having gone overboard on the teen angst in the first two volumes, there is some world building this go round. As summer begins and the students begin prepping for the town festival, we have a fascinating/repelling side story about where eggs come from in a world inhabited by anthropomorphized animals. Then the students actually go into town, and we get a glimpse of a black market that caters to carnivores' base needs and a strange vigilante who polices the place.

But for those of us here for the romance, there are plenty of developments there too as a love rectangle starts to form with the introduction of a new wolf in town.

The drama club’s shocking improvised performance has surprisingly gain them a lot of high praise. Meanwhile, summer is here and as the school prepares for it’s annual festival, we meet a couple new characters. They’re a hen who takes great pride in her egg-laying and a female wolf who meets Legoshi. Later he and his peers head to the city’s black market and after nearly giving in to his instincts, he end up in the hands of an unorthodox panda doctor. A (100%/Outstanding)

At a high school where the students are literally divided into predators and prey, it’s personal relationships that maintain the fragile peace. Who among them is a Beastar—an academic and social role model destined to become a leader in a society naturally rife with mistrust? Is it Legoshi, the scary looking but soft hearted wolf? And what is up with this murder?!

Legoshi is in a bit of a mess! Not only does he have to deal with fallout from his very intense “realistic” performance but he figures out what he’s feeling for the rabbit girl. What I’m loving is how Legoshi is shown coming to this revelation. It’s awkward but relatable but not necessarily typical because he’s a predator lusting after a prey animal.

Things get really disturbing though when he goes out on the town with the carnivore production crew! We meet a new horrific character, a panda bear, with a neat twist. I really was totally on Legoshi’s side for the entire black market plot. I’d have reacted exactly the way he did too. You aren’t your nature! But now I’m curious if he’s going to test himself.

We also have a bit of a love triangle going on when Legoshi meets a grey wolf girl who is being bullied. I actually really love her for Legoshi, she’s sweet. And Legoshi has a surprising lunch with you know who! It’s a bit awkward and made especially so when we learn this other girl is in a hidden relationship with another powerful figure in the animal world.

My favorite chapter in this series so far is one to do with a hen, her eggs and Legoshi’s lunch. It really proved to me how this series is just getting better and better. Beastars vol 3 is not one to miss, you’re sure to get hooked on this most unusual series.

Beastars vol 3
5/5 stars

This series just keeps getting better and better with each volume. I think Legoshis crush and processing of feelings for Haru is just precious and he’s so smol I can’t. Their lunch date was so cute. I hate the twist that Haru is sleeping with Louis though. Why was that needed.

I love the lore of them worshiping dinosaurs and doing the meteor festival to honor them. Every time I learn more about this world I am more and more fascinated. The black market was disturbing and such an interesting question of morals and “humanity”.

Dude the thing with the hen and her knowing that Legoshi eats her eggs was so bizarre and ridiculous but I absolutely loved it it was so fun. I would die for Juno and I’m intrigued about how her and Legoshis relationship is going to grow and how that might conflict with him and Haru.

Slave Legoshi after he gets captured… did things to me. I’m intrigued by the therapy panda man, not su ur e if I like him or not yet.

Excited to pick up next one.

How can this keep getting more and more interesting, when it keeps straying away from the murder scene from volume one?

Well, it doesn't matter how, this is just an awesome addition to the series, and the way the author depicts the carnivores' fights against their instincts (or their surrender to them) is just mesmerizing.

Loving Legoshi more and more with every passing volume, and his confusion over his feelings for Haru, the bunny, is just so promising for what's to come...

Special mention to the side story starring Legom, the egg laying hen. What a fun way to add some more layers to the story, the academy and the whole Beastars world.

Legoshi starts to come out of his shell more and more, only there seems to be an incident in the city where a herbivore is killed and eaten and witnesses place a gray wolf at the scene.

Haru is also growing a backbone with the people that bully her,and she seems to be close to Louis, the red deer from the drama club.
