A little more advanced than the other two in this series. No matter how bright my 4-yr-old nephew is, he just doesn’t yet have the life experience for this, whereas the Idea book and the Problem book excite and inspire him. Me, on the other hand? It really spoke to me.
Another great story to add to the collection of "What do you do with" books that began with "What Do You Do with an Idea?" and "What Do You Do with a Problem?"
Another wonderful book. A very positive story about a boy and what do you when a chance comes. This is a great series of books. Wonderfully illustrated.
What an incredible book. Pretty much anybody who has accomplished anything in life has had to take chances. This book follows a child who is afraid at first to take a chance, but in the end the child reaches out and takes a chance. I've never seen a book that speaks so loudly to adults from a child's perspective. A lot of times we don't take chances because we fear failure, but some of the times we succeed when we take chances. All of life is risky so take a chance and laugh in the face of fate. I honestly think this book could turn out to be a classic. Happy Reading!
Author Kobi Yamada and illustrator Mae Besom, who previously collaborated on What Do You Do with an Idea? and What Do You Do with a Problem?, return with this third picture-book exploration of the emotional challenges facing young (and old) people. The boy-narrator here reflects on some of the chances, depicted as golden birds/paper planes, that have come his way, and how he has neglected to seize them, due to fear. Eventually he finds that the more he ignores his chances, the fewer there seem to be. Deciding that he must conquer his fear, he resolves to seize the next chance that comes his way...
Like its predecessors, What Do You Do With a Chance pairs a simple but perceptive text exploring some of the stumbling blocks people experience, in realizing their full intellectual and creative potential, with gorgeous artwork that perfectly captures the ideas presented in the narrative. I enjoy Mae Besom's illustrations in their own right - they are always lovely - and I appreciate the way they use color to depict the changing reality around the main character. Recommended to anyone who has read and enjoyed the previous two books, or who is looking for picture-books addressing opportunity, and the courage necessary to grab onto it.
Yes this is a kid’s book but it is so applicable to adults. For those adults who can’t make the time to read and always second guess themselves, read this one!
I love these books, but this one came veered into what seemed like a random collection of Instagram captions, and while I think some adults might like that, I don't think kids will.
A perfect choice to read when starting a new teaching unit that might require stretching skills. Love, love, love this book - message, simple words and illustrations are all spot on!
i was forced to listen to this during the grade 12 graduation, and let me tell you i 10/10 do recommend. this really lifted my spirits and woke me up while i was falling asleep on grace’s shoulder.
Kobi Yamada’s What Do You Do With a Chance? is a beautifully crafted picture book that delivers an inspiring message about courage, resilience, and the importance of seizing opportunities. As the third installment in Yamada’s series (What Do You Do With an Idea? and What Do You Do With a Problem?), this book continues to use metaphorical storytelling to engage young readers and encourage personal growth.
The story follows a young protagonist who encounters chances but hesitates to take them due to fear of failure and self-doubt. Over time, the child learns that missed chances can lead to regret, but taking a risk—despite fear—can open up exciting possibilities. The narrative is simple yet profound, making it accessible for children while carrying a message that resonates with readers of all ages.
Mae Besom’s illustrations are stunning, using soft, dreamlike watercolor tones that perfectly capture the book’s themes of uncertainty, hope, and triumph. The visual storytelling enhances the emotional depth of the book, making it an immersive and impactful read.
Overall, What Do You Do With a Chance? is an uplifting and empowering book that encourages children to embrace new opportunities with confidence. It’s an excellent choice for parents, teachers, and caregivers looking to spark discussions about bravery, growth, and learning from experiences.
