Rethinking Fate

Rate this book
Now what? Dr. Miles Sheppard has been focusing one goal for so long nothing else mattered, including his personal life. Unfortunately, now that he’s crossed the finish line, he’s lost. Gaining his doctorate should have been the hard part of his career, but figuring out what to do next might drive him crazy.

Now what? Sean’s been watching the sexy doctor for months. But when the quiet cutie dozes off in the middle of the crowded bar, it might be time to step in and actually talk to him. Sean’s not shy, but he knows he’s not the most traditional man. It will take more than a sweet temperament and an understanding smile to accept the unconventional relationship Sean is looking for.

When an exhausted doctor meets a bartender who’s more than meets the eye, they’re set for a match made in heaven…as long as heaven includes binkies and bedtime stories.

Still one of my favorite age play books.

I absolutely loved how Miles as a psychologist was trying to find the things in life he was very passionate about, instead of doing what everyone expected of him.

-----------------------------------

I really love the sweetness of M.A. Innes's books. Her books always put a smile on my face.

I thought the first 30% was a bit slow because psychologist Miles needed to analyze everything before he started to real age play (that wasn't a bad thing, it just slowed things down a bit). But once Sean took charge and just showed Miles what age-play was really about, it got way better. Miles finally got out of his head and just enjoyed being little. And that’s what made this book go from good to great! I finally felt some emotion once these guys stopped talking and started doing.

Miles was the cutest little and I was so happy he had Sean as his daddy to make him relax and forget about his problems for a while.

M.A. Innes’ Rethinking Fate is the most romantic courtship I’ve read in a very long time and I enjoyed every single minute of it. Once these two men fully embrace how well they work together, it’s sexy on so many levels. For an author who writes spectacular age-play romances, this one is perfect.

The alternating pov’s works so well in Rethinking Fate. Getting inside these guys’ heads as they process everything that happens add a layer of intimacy, and while the attraction builds so does their comfort level. They are free and open with their communication, and it’s beautiful.

Miles is a man so worthy of love, ready for something wonderful in his life, but with no idea what it might be. His honest reactions as he tentatively dips his toes into the age-play waters, and then how he revels in letting Sean care for him in every way, took my breath away.

Having just turned 40, Sean still hasn’t found that special person who can be what he needs. At this point in his life he’s feeling the hole where his partner should be. When he crosses paths with Miles and recognizes how special he is, and Sean knows he’ll do whatever he can to make it work.

Sean gradually introduces Miles to the different aspects of age-play, and gauges his reactions to keep it good for both of them. Miles’ reaction to letting go, how good it feels for him, as well as how it affects his Daddy, is incredibly moving.

Once these two embrace their roles, and embark on the sexual side of their relationship? Well M.A. Innes always writes a smokin’ love scene, but with the connection Miles and Sean have, this one goes to eleven. Absolutely. Steaming. HOT. Plus the all-time-best Dirty Daddy Talk I’ve ever read *shivers*. It’s wonderful.

I went into reading this book knowing that I've never before read a daddy kink an age play book and that I might not like reading about it. I don't get the kink at all - not in the way I get most of the kinks I've read about in books so far, even though I probably wouldn't practice them. And this book didn't really help with understanding daddy kink age play - that is not its job so that's fair, but it was also the only reason I was forcing myself to continue reading the book past the first time I felt really uncomfortable.

The book is sweet, the writing is good, the Age Play kink is a favorite. First quarter of the book was lovely but as soon as one of the MCs started analyzing their possible relationship in clinical terms, it just ruined it for me. It felt like he was trying to make himself like it more than he normally would. He is a psychologist, and the words "What would I tell my patient in this situation?" made it sound cold and uninviting. After that no matter how I tried to get back into the story, I just couldn't. I didn't even get to any steamy bits. Bummer, it was my first time reading this author!

Reread 8/2/2021 I love Miles and Sean more each time I read their book. I’m still waiting on Aubrey’s book. I want it so much.

New decade 1/25/2020 what a difference more exposure to a genre can change your perspective. I like several books involving littles (admittedly they’re mostly written by this author). This book has become a comfort reread. Now if only Aubrey could finally get his own book.

*****original review 4/27/2019*****

I don't think I could even remotely review this coherently, so I'm not going to even try. I'm just going to put down my thoughts while reading this.

First, no kink shaming. If ANYTHING I say comes across that way, please let me know.

I'm truly not sure how I feel. This is my first foray into a book containing age play. I can say at first blush that this isn't a kink I think I'm interested in. That could change as I read more. I don't know. I like Daddy/boy kink, but I've never delved into actual age play. I liked the beginning of the book. I liked how Sean took care of Miles. I liked how Sean was as a Daddy (minus the bottle but surprisingly ok with the binkie for some reason). I started getting uncomfortable when a things of a sexual nature were introduced. I liked that this seemed to keep Miles as a little kind of separate from the sexual nature of his relationship with Sean, but I don't think I could have continued had that been different. I know, mentally, that these are adult men having consensual sex with each other, but my brain has a difficult time separating the childlike nature of a little to them actually having sex. Again, I know that this isn't ACTUALLY a child. But his time as a little READS as a child. The thought of that turning someone on is difficult for me to grasp. Again, not kink shaming just way out of my comfort zone. Just my first thoughts as a new reader of this type of lifestyle. I probably felt that way the first time I read any type of BDSM element in a book (which I really enjoy now), so my feelings may change about this too.

I'm sure I will try another book with this as a subject. I want to give it a fair shot, and I really want to understand. I may never understand, but I sure as hell won't begrudge anyone that does.

Re-read 12/25/20: still amazing!

Re-read 11/6/19: Yup, still happy heart goo puddle on floor. Miles and Sean...Beauty and Daddy. Perfect! I might have to re-read this one twice a year, just to keep me smiling.

Perfection, utterly sweet and heart-melty perfection! I've been waiting ever so long for the wonderful Dr. Sheppard's story, and this was worth every second of that wait. Seeing Dr. Sheppard 10 years ago, when he was still figuring out where his talents would help the most patients is simply wonderful. Now I feel like I need to go back and read the Beautiful Shame books to see if I can spot Sean at the bar...and, why not, now I really want to go back and read EVERYTHING M.A./Shaw has ever written! Gah, I'm a puddle of happy heart goo on the floor! Thank you for all the sweetly kinky happiness!

Gateway book for age play

I totally didn’t understand the appeal of age play before I read this book. The purpose, the benefits, the logistics... Other books I’ve read, touched on the subject. In particular Maddox and Bryan from M.A. Innes ‘Loving’ series. That series gave me the push to read this book. Miles is the psychologist of Jeremy and Kevin. ‘Rethinking Fate’ is the story of Miles and his partner Sean. I view it as a spinoff prequel to the ‘Loving’ series.

I loved how the story addressed multiple aspects of the age play kink. I feel like I finally understand it enough to seek out more romances that incorporate it. In Rethinking Fate, age play was shown as part of the BDSM lifestyle. Whips and chains always seem too dark for my reading preferences. Age play trades darkness for light while keeping the domination and submission aspects. Think leather teddy bears, soft cotton, and an oral fixation. The joy of nurturing and being nurtured. Diapers not required.

The only negative is that I now want an adult sized rocking horse. Maybe the author could have included a supplier directory as an appendix?

I've been looking forward to Dr Shepherd's book and it didn't disappoint. His relationship with Daddy Sean had a great beginning and the sweet, caring undertones we've come to expect from this author.
The strength of the relationship between them grows as does the love..

"it felt like every moment since we'd first met was one form of foreplay or another. Sometimes it had been sweet and tender, sometimes hot and slow, but there had always been a layer of love and desire."

I also enjoyed the cameo appearances from a few past favorites.
Overall a great read that I'd happily recommend.

This sweet story just changed my idea of daddy kink being a bit too weird for my bdsm tastes. Perhaps that has something to do with diapers often being mentioned - icky. No diapers here though. There is however, a teddy bear, a binky, story books and lots of love and caring including great sex allowing the overworked Doctor Miles to roll play being a child with a daddy, to help him relax and de-stress. This roll play helps the doctor to think more clearly about his future and find the kind of work that will be fulfilling for him. Nice HEA conclusion. Great read!

This was actually done really well and I loved the non-angsty plot line. I was honestly waiting for something to go wrong, but it never did!

Strong characters and lots of dialogue helped make the short intimacy period seem honest and real.

Totally recommend!

I am constantly amazed at the ability of M.A Innes , to create so many
varied characters and different storylines.
Each and every one capturing my heart along the way...

Sweet Miles is a talented young man, he is very astute when it comes to human behaviour.
He likes to watch people and analyse their thoughts and moves.
Trying to keep up with his studies and putting in extra hours at various
clinics has left him totally exhausted and vulnerable.
Miles may be a doctor much in demand but he is pretty lonely in his personal life.
Occasionally going for a drink at the same bar to relax is not working.
Not when he ends up falling asleep each time.
Somebody needs to look out for the cute young doctor.

Keeping the bar running smoothly is not an easy task when Sean
can't keep his eyes away from Sleeping Beauty.
Something about the young man tugs at his heart strings, and pulls
at his need to protect, Miles looks like such a vulnerable boy, sitting all alone.
Calling a cab, Sean gently walks Miles to the taxi, and he tucks him in tight,
with strict instructions to the driver.

Miles has never had anyone look out for him before, not like Sean.
Why did he want to curl in to the warm embrace?
How is it he could feel so cherished ?
Trying to control the Daddy Dom in him is difficult when all Sean wants
to do is take Miles home and look after him, in every way possible.

As Sean and Miles meet up and get to know each other slowly all the
pieces of the puzzle fall into place. Miles knew he was a submissive,
but what he didn't realise was, what kind of lifestyle suited him.
As Sean looks at Miles, he decides that he needs to help his boy to relax.
With bubble baths, bedtime stories, binkies, bottles and Bobb the bear.

Yes, daddies always know best....

I have wanted Dr. Sheppard's story from the moment we first met him. Each time he was in one of the books I wanted it more. I knew it would be great but this is beyond that. So much so that I'm struggling to describe how without giving spoilers. For those of you who are familiar with M. A. Innes and Shaw Montgomery And know me, you will find this is what I love about her work amped up 100 times. Part of that is because of whose story it is. I also think Miles needed to have his story told so he gave her so many emotions to work with. His passion and self discovery come out strong. And the bits of other characters... I'm screaming right now. I love how Bryan and Kevin were completely themselves. I want to know more about the others. Avery needs a story. I need to know how Aubrey and Lincoln are doing. Those of you who haven't read any of her work, you need to get to it. You just don't know how much you are missing. Seriously!!! I drop everything for her books. Eating, sleeping, housework, forget about it. I had to fight myself to not read the epilogue until after work. I re-read all the books all the time and this one is going to the top of that list. I just have one little problem. I want more lol! The wait for the next begins. Follow M. A. Innes and Shaw Montgomery on Amazon. Follow Shaw Montgomery on Facebook and join her reader's group. The best at teasing us and always has us begging for more. What’s even better than reading hers books? Listening to them afterwards. Her books with Kenneth Obi narrating them are the best.

4 stars. This was so cute and fluffy. I loved it so much. Miles and Sean are a great couple and both are incredibly smart. Especially Miles which isn't surprising since he's psychologist. They took their time and really got to know each other and what they wanted out of their relationship. It was the perfect buildup because when they did become a couple it was beautiful. I loved all of the side characters and their stories and I think this is one of my new favorites by this author. It was all just so delightful and sweet.

As brilliant as expected - couldn’t put it down!

This is only the second or third book I’ve ever preordered on kindle, but I knew it would be good. And it totally delivers.
We’ve met Dr Sheppard in multiple M A Innes books but here we get to hear his story. This overworked, exhausted grad student who needs to relax and unwind....and the hobby-bartender who rescues him. It’s so nice to meet the doc as a younger man, see his struggles to figure out what he wants to do with that v intelligent brain and truckload of empathy he has. Sean, our lovely Daddy, is sweet, caring and gorgeously written and the relationship evolution is fast and slow enough; we can see the changes but it’s not too drawn out so we do get to the good bits!! The interactions between the two remind me why I love the Daddy concept so much (they’re adorable!!). And the additional characters - Jake, Andrew, Aubrey and others - are just involved enough to be interesting personalities, without taking away from the cosiness of being part of the two MCs’ very intimate-feeling journey. Rereading after I go back to the Pieces series!!

Dr. Sheppard has an important roll in both the Pieces and Loving series, where he is an awesome psychologist working with people involved in the BDSM lifestyle. The doctor helps Bryan, and he basically saves Kevin and Jeremy. It's obvious that he is in the lifestyle; and now we get to see how sweet Miles became the kink doctor, and we find out what kind of relationship he is involved in.
I love Miles, who is playful and adorable when he is away from the office. Sean, who becomes Miles' very doting Daddy Dom, is wonderful. This is another couple for me to fall for in the sweet and kinky world this author makes me wish I could live in. Miles and Sean have no real angst in this story, and they never even disagree, but their support and care for each other always rings true. I love how characters from various stories make cameo appearances in the author's books. That certainly happens here, but I believe this book would work just fine as a standalone for someone looking for a sweet and sexy age play romance. I love and recommend this fun story!

I have to admit I'm obsessed with M.A. Innes men & their stories. I've read every M.A. Innes book. While I enjoyed & love them all, this one is a stand out & was just absolutely incredible. Both MC's are adorable. I couldn't get enough. I could have literally sat here and read another 200 pages of nothing but Sean thinking how cute "B" was at doing something or even how much "B" loved that damn binkie. Seriously I kind of want a binkie now. It's not often I experience "real life" type of emotions for or towards a character I read, so it surprised me a bit when I actually felt really proud of Miles. Whilst I enjoy Shaw Montgomery books, I utterly love M.A. Innes ones. So even tho this book just came out today, I really hope there's going to be a new one very soon.

Beautiful love story

Sweet kink is one of my favorite types of books, so I love Shaw Montgomery! This is hands down...one of her best! Miles Sheppard is a tired, grad student that has just finished his Doctorate when he meets Sean, bartender and innate caretaker. This is an excellent Daddy/boy story with the hottest, sweetest kink for which one could ask. This book is not part of a series but to fully appreciate it...I recommend reading everything else written by this author! ;)

Dr. S

Yet another fantastic story by this author! If you’ve read this author before, we’ve met Dr. Sheppard in prior books as a peripheral character. I’m so glad we got Dr. Sheppard’s story! I just loved his relationship with Daddy Sean and their story grabbed me from the start! They were so sweet with a slow burn that kept me turning the pages. I also really enjoyed catching up with past characters, making me want to re-read all their books! This is a story not to be missed!

Dr. Sheppard has helped some of our favorite couples throughout other series by MA Innes and it seems very appropriate for us to know where he is coming from!

What happens when a sweet sleepy sub walks into a bar and catches the eye of the very protective bartender? Magic.

Set ten years prior to when we first meet Miles Sheppard, we learn the story of how Sleeping Beauty met his Prince Charming and how sometimes it isn’t easy to get everything you want.

Loved every second of this read! Perfect way to spend the afternoon!

I really loved seeing Dr. Sheppard's introduction to BDSM, but this did not stand on its own as a great book, which was disappointing as all hell. It was more like an easter egg for fervent fans -- which was great if that's what you were expecting!!

IT'S SO PERFECT!!

God, where do I even begin? I guess I'll start by saying that if there is one author whom I know will deliver everything my little heart desires in a daddy/ boy story it is M.A. Innes. Her stories are sweet, heartwarming, witty, and oh so hot. I love how the characters feel like actual tangible people that could exist (and probably do) in real life. And I also really adore how while the romance is at the forefront of the story, we still get to see what else is going on in the characters' lives and how it all comes together. That's what catapults a good romance to a great romance for me. It's the line between good smut and an amazing story. Life doesn't begin and end when you meet someone new. There has to be more to a book than just that for me. And this did it! It was so good I can't gush about it enough. Also, the call back to other characters in her stories, many of which I have read, was noticed and well received.

Now I'm never going to sit here and do my normal spiel of why you should read and whom I think will like it because this book deserves more than what I can provide. I know the story is not going to be everyone's cup of tea (daddy stories with ABDL rarely are) but if you've never read a daddy/ little story before, give this one a chance. And if you are not a novice to daddy/ little romances such as myself, definitely pick it up because it is just so gooey and sweet and it'll really make you smile. So with that said five solid stars.

This was a sweet look into Sean & Miles and their romance / story over time. Whilst I’m not hugely big on age play, I really like this author and the genuine and caring approach towards kink & taboo. I know it’s not for most, but I could see a sweetness to the book.

Dr. Miles Sheppard & Sean

After being bookended with scenes with Bryan & Kevin at Dr. Sheppard’s office — the prologue is delightful — most of the book takes place 10 years prior when Miles was finishing up his doctorate. When we first meet Miles he’s out as gay and has general interest in BDSM — both professionally & personally — but he has yet to find his specific kink.

He’s drawn to a forty year old bartender named Sean, who looks after him when he falls asleep at the bar. The next time Miles comes in, Sean grabs beers and joins Miles at his favorite booth. They talk and flirt. Sean admits he’s a Daddy Dom and Miles tries the idea of being a little on for size.

For their third date, Miles comes over to Sean’s house for dinner. Sean has a nursery full of books and handmade toys, just waiting till he found a little boy to call his own. Sean is an artist who does leather and woodworking. Most of the toys are his creations. Miles is especially drawn to a leather bear Sean made after sending his Sleeping Beauty home that first night.

(Before the Sleeping Beauty appellation, Miles was known as Mr. Rogers in the bar. He always sat alone in a booth, nursing a beer while people-watching.)

Along with school, Miles is splitting his time between interning at a private practice and a clinic. He is floundering a bit as to where he sees his career going. Unfortunately, the private practice gives him a heads up that they are ready to offer him a permanent position and he has a week to make his decision.

Sean convinces Miles to take the week off — at least from the private practice internship — and stay with Sean so he has the peace & quiet to make his decision. (Miles is living in a house with a bunch of other graduate students. No peace & quiet to be had.)

Being a little and shutting off his mind so he can make a thoughtful decision go hand-in-hand. Sean takes it slow with him, dinner with divided plates & sippy cups, dressing in shorts & t-shirts, watching cartoons, playing with toys, reading together, cuddling, a bottle. (They both decide diapers are off the table.) While he starts out in the guest room, it’s not long till Miles is sleeping in Daddy’s bed.

Daddy giving Miles a bath is their first intimacy. And a spanking leads to their first sexual contact. A bath together precedes intercourse. By the week’s end they are a Daddy & his boy as well as lovers. Sean is ready to ask Miles to move in, to wear his collar, to marry.

In the meantime, Miles meets a patient at the clinic that he’s drawn to professionally. He’s not Aubrey’s doctor, but they sit and watch tv together and connect. Because he’s not Aubrey’s doctor, Miles allows himself to share more about himself than he would otherwise. Miles realizes that Aubrey is a sub. He had been hospitalized when he fell apart upon the death of his lover, but no one else realized Aubrey lost his Master, and that’s a whole different level of loss.

Going home after a long day, Miles realizes that’s what he wants. To be there for the BDSM community and others who feel marginalized. He plans to open his own practice, knowing he’ll have to find a new line in the sand as to how much he should share with his patients. Just enough so they know they have a sympathetic ear.

We also meet Avery in this book. He and Sean are friends. As Miles is building his kink friendly practice, Avery is in the police department beginning to build a similar support structure. (In the afterward, the author says Avery is probably going to get his own book. Yay!)

We also have a brief mention of Finn and Beckett in the “present” timeline. Miles & Sean are meeting them for dinner.

No kinks other than the age play and spanking. Plenty of little boy toys, but no adult toys make an appearance.
