From the creator of Hellsing comes the manga fantasy epic that inspired the hit Drifters anime!
In a farflung mystic realm, the army of the Black King--an overwhelming horde of goblins, giants, and dragons--descends upon the fortifications of humanity, led by Earth warriors Oda Nobunaga and Shimazu Toyohiso. Dug in deep, and with the superior strategic acumen and weaponry provided by the warlord Nobunaga, the human races have a chance for victory against the Black King's superior numbers, but the most dangerous enemy may come from within!
Kohta Hirano (平野 耕太 Hirano Kōta) is a Japanese mangaka most famous for his manga Hellsing. Starting his career first as a mangaka's assistant (self-described as "horrible" and "lazy" in said assistant position), and later an H manga artist, he went on to enjoy somewhat limited success with other relatively unknown manga titles such as Angel Dust, Coyote, Gun Mania and Hi-Tension. His first major success came with his manga series Hellsing, which got its start and was subsequently serialized in a monthly manga magazine, Young King OURs, towards the latter half of 1997.
So far, this was the best volume in the series. Finally there is a huge battle. All the scenes with Toyohisa were amazing on one hand, but on the other that boy really should have some character development because if it goes on like this he will die pretty soon. Thank you to Edelweiss + for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
There's the Hirano charm I was missing. The hot headed overconfident protagonist, throwing himself into a offensive he thinks he won't come back from. A calculated tactician laughing at his foes, only to be outplayed for drama. A large scale offensive of two armies clashing! All those trademarks from the back half of Hellsing came back to play in this volume, and I missed them so.
While I am disappointed we don't have vol 7 out in English at the time of writing this, this was the action payoff I've been waiting for. It didn't touch everything I was hoping for, but I hope it's only the beginning of the end.
I love seeing characters getting under each other's skin in conflict. I love heroic last stands/final charges. I love characters being frustrated seeing the ghosts of their past haunt them. I love big dramatic swings in war, just when you feel the tide shifting. This is the really fun drama Hirano gets when he goes for it.
