Cabin Fever

I was a damsel in distress.

I was trapped in a Porsche during a blizzard. No food. No cell service. Not even a curling iron.

And then a shadowy figure emerged from the depths of the blindingly white snow. My handsome prince--except, well, my dashing hero on a mighty steed turned out to be a beast with an eyepatch and a beard, driving a dented pickup truck.

Yes, he saved my life.

But does he have to be such a grouch about it?

4 Princess and the caveman Stars

Cabin Fever was my first time reading anything by Annabelle Costa. I really enjoyed it. I felt like for a short book it had good world, character, and relationship development. I did feel there was a bit too much name brand dropping in this book. But with the fact that Nat and Chase were both really rich I could overlook it. Natalie was completely believable as a character. She was rich spoiled but had a good heart, was a hard worker, and didn't look down on others. I like Nat I did feel she was a bit dizzy at times. Now Jake I loved. I would have climb that rough backwoods sexy lumberjack man like a cat on a tree. He was intriguing from the moment he showed up. There was just something about him that really stood out to me. I loved Nat and Jake together. I think my only problem with this book was I felt it was too short. I wanted more of Nat and Jake. I need that HEA not just a HFN. I hope the author writes more books for Nat and Jake!

It was supposed to be a romantic weekend getaway in a remote cabin, or so Natalie thought. Apparently, the blizzard didn’t get the memo that two privileged and wealthy young adults were coming. That is when Jake appeared, a mountain of man, grizzly and scruffy and their savior. But could he be trusted?

And that is when Natalie learned there is more to a REAL man than the labels in his clothes, that evil can lurk anywhere and lies can fall from lips like diamonds from a Tiffany's bag.

Annabelle Costa’s CABIN FEVER is about waking up to what is truly important and discovering there is more to life than the things money can buy.

I can honestly say I struggled with the shallowness that Natalie projected. I didn’t like her, but as the story progressed, she grew and became more “human.” Chase was another story, the little rich boy who had no concept of most of the world sees as reality.

Jake made this story for me! Rugged, hardworking, honorable and dealing with the cruel hand life had dealt him, yet a hero at heart.

On to the tension that grew between Natalie and Jake, a slow burn created through simple things uncovered more of each character and gave Natalie a depth even she didn’t’ know she could possess.

A quick read, where one could definitely feel the frigid snow and the warmth of a spark of an emotional bond growing!

I received a complimentary copy from Annabelle Costa! This is my honest and voluntary review.

Fazit

Mrs Annabelle Costa is an auto-buy’s author for me.
And today with this new release, she did not disappoint.
As usual, her heroine is far from flawless, why she was so real, I liked and dislike her as it arrives in real life, nobody is perfect, she is from the good side of the fence and even if she created her own business by herself, it is easier when you have a good name.
I confess I quite struggled with Nathalie, sure her spoiled side brought quite the humour here, she is a dictionary for expensive brands, but she can also enjoy more simple things even if she could not save her life in the wild.
She did a lot of growing up during the short span of time of the action, her main problem is she seems unable to see past people’s mask and trust the wrong persons and make mistakes. I was upset at her for never voicing her own needs or envies, letting others take the decisions for her.
Jake is a protector in the soul, he went to a great deal out of his wait to help Nathalie and her dumbass of boyfriend, or ex-boyfriend. Sure, why is he living all alone, with less than the basic of necessities in nowhere’s land.
Nathalie will have to learn where lies her trust as when masks will fall she will find herself in quite a complicated situation.
Funny how this story took me by surprise, I thought I was going one way then unexpectedly Mrs Costa reversed the brake and turned it upside down.
A five stars rate for this surprising read.

I absolutely loved this story!

The book starts out with Natalie and her boyfriend, Chase, heading out to a remote, luxury cabin in the woods for a romantic weekend together. Disaster strikes when a blizzard hits and they become trapped in their vehicle with no way out.

Enter Jake—a shadowy figure emerges out of the snowy haze and rescues them, giving them food and shelter in his cabin.

Is Jake the bad guy or good guy? That is the question that looms in Natalie’s mind as the days pass in the cabin with this gruff, mysterious stranger. It’s obvious that Jake is not who he claims to be.

The twists and turns in this book will keep you guessing until the very end.

I absolutely love anything that Annabelle writes but I seriously swooned over Jake in this story! He’s just the kind of dark, brooding, mysterious character that I love.

Amazing story, engaging characters, wonderful dialogue and lots of intrigue. I loved it.

This mystery was a little different from a lot of Costa's books but no less compelling. I loved that the hero was this big, mysterious, gruff woodsman. I also loved that the heroine had Costa's trademark dry, subtle wit.

If you like a good mystery with a yummy hero, give this one a try!

Kept me smiling throughout the book!!

Another great book from Annabelle Costa. Fun, quirky and romantic with lots of pent up sexual chemistry. Natalie and her boyfriend Chase are stranded in the middle of nowhere in a heavy snow storm and are rescued by a tall, grizzly, scary giant of a man. He takes them back to his cabin, while they must wait until the roads are passable. Initially Natalie is terrified of Jake, with his huge,, shaggy mountain man appearance and his battle scars, but her fear gradually changes to respect and then to desire. The changing relationship between Natalie and Jake is beautifully told with both humour and sensitivity. Loved it!

Always love Annabelle's characters but Natalie took me a while to warm up to. So clueless. Jake was more to my liking right off the bat. Nice intrigue, funny and touching. Writing and editing great. All in all, enjoyable story.

Chase will Hilfe holen und lässt Natalie zurück.

I don't read a lot of suspense stories so this is something a little different for me—a romance hero who is a wounded/disfigured woodsman living in a remote cabin in the forests of Vermont. It was another compelling read by Annabelle Costa that made me forget all about my RL responsibilities until I turned the last page.

Our heroine Natalie is rich, smart, talented and entrepreneurial, but she's never dated a guy she could like. She thought she enjoyed the finer things in life, until she met Jake. Stuck in a snowstorm with her douchy boyfriend Chase who she just broke up with, they are in dire straights until Jake rescues Natalie from the car and Chase out in the cold suffering from hypothermia. They're snowbound in Jake's cabin for the weekend with no electricity, no phone service, no internet, no hot water—totally off the grid. While Chase recovers from his hypothermia, Natalie learns to live on less and to appreciate Jake's simplicity, at the same time understanding that he has a complicated past. Despite Jake's limp, missing digits, scars and an eye patch, she finds him fascinating and attractive, and when Chase awakens she feels tugged in both directions between the two men—wanting to return to her familiar life in Boston, but at the same time wanting to explore a relationship with Jake. But Jake has secrets and a history that make that impossible, no matter how much he wants Natalie to stay.

Natalie's right on the cusp of really discovering herself when this whole scenario takes place. We see her dumping her sh*tty boyfriend as the story begins, then as it continues we see her shifting back and forth, drawn to Jake's decency while still easily swayed by Chase's deceit. This is the story of Natalie's epiphany, discovering what she should value in life and learning to think for herself. She looks inside and sees Jake's true essence and worth, as well as his rugged appeal, and finally knows what she's been missing in her past relationships. Interestingly, in the end she finds a balance. She still enjoys her old way of life and the perks of being rich, but she shares her money and her talents with Jake's mom.

Despite being left with a few question marks about Jake and a desire for more closure this was a good read. It's strictly an HFN with no promises being made, but if you're interested in suspense, intrigue, twists and turns, and self-discovery in your romance stories you won't be disappointed. It starts out a little creepy but stick with it, you'll be pulling for Jake and Natalie and wanting them to have each other by their sides forever after.

CABIN FEVER is a stand-alone, contemporary, suspense romance.

Natalie and Chase were a pair of rich snobs and I wondered at first why we were even presented with two such shallow people and why they were in a car together. It was obvious they didn’t know or like one another.

When reality strikes in the form of a blizzard, Chase’s true colors come out in full force and that ends a long-term relationship just in time for the real prince to sweep into Natalie’s life… except Jake can’t be seen or known.

I loved how honorable Jake was. He was a real man, not a sniveling weenie. He had a great sense of humor, but also fairness, protection, and gallantry that were important to him.

I didn’t like spoiled little rich girl, Natalie, for most of the book, but as she grew as a person I grew to like her. Her growth was in direct correlation with her exposure to the morality she saw in Jake.

There was light suspense at the beginning, but true suspense came later in the book and was a surprise. It was one of those “what just happened” moments that took the book from a three to a four star experience.

Note: While I received this book as a gifted ARC via Author’s XP, my opinions are my own and are given freely.

Different Spin on Common Trope

This is the first book that I have read by this author, and I find myself very surprised by it. I read a lot, and I don't get surprised often. I read a lot of romance and thrillers, so I'm accustomed to the “stuck in the cabin with someone” trope. Several things make this book unique. For one, the heroine—who is the viewpoint character—has a strongly defined character and voice. The author has pulled off a very deep viewpoint here. She is at turns quite a funny—not that she would say that herself—and sometimes serious. Rather, she, especially at the beginning, is so self-absorbed and judgmental that it is just simply fun to read what is going on in her head. Jake is right when he nicknames her “Princess.” The two men in this book, Jake and Chase, are as different as they can be in just about every way. The heroine learns and grows over this story; I love that in a book—there was a lot of room for improvement! There's a big twist at the end I didn't foresee, changing the book into something wholly different from I thought it was. There are also a few more little surprises at the end. In all, this book was a real treat because it was such a fun and different ride. I recommend it wholeheartedly.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Snowed in.........now what?

Cabin Fever is the first book I have read by Annabelle Costa and I enjoyed it. The story is about Natalie and Jake. She is a materialistic and self-centered young woman who can basically recite the names of "expensive brands". She has a successful catering business but is super shallow. She finds herself stranded and her savior is Jake. He is the opposite and her and lives a simple life in the mountains. When he takes her back to his cabin to ride out the snow storm it is an interesting mix between these two. Jake is handsome, big, is damaged and does not like having this woman invading his space.
There are funny moments where I laughed out loud and loved the banter between the two. What I really wanted to do for a long time was cuff Natalie upside her head because she was just so dang unlikable. Her idea of expensive was more "flashy wealth" so that everyone can know just how rich you are supposed to be. She ends up learning what substance is and that there is more to life than "keeping up with the Jones's".

So this was supposed to be funny.

I am 30% in and can report, no fun whatsoever. And rather insulting towards rich people...who are obviously all dense and superficial. And TSTL.

I don't have any interest in the heroine, whose brave decision to start a business whilst being a millionaire heiress, is probably supposed to make her relatable...like all the other super-rich people who play at real life whilst clutching their Birkin bags and walking around through snowy mountains in cute Laboutin boots...

She was off-putting enough, her Porsche-driving ex-boyfriend who didn't think that he would need a warm jacket or warm shoes on a February weekend in Vermont, was just a nuissance at this point.

I don't know what's supposed to be funny about "Princess" and the Cabin guy, but probably he has a great back-story that will make him suddenly attractive like losing the beard revealed his handsome face in a first step.

I am tired of the story with roughly two thirds to go, so another DNF for me here.

I admit I wanted to kick Chase in the butt at first. The story starts out that Chase and Natalie are on their way to stay in a fancy log cabin, when a snow storm hits and they lose GPS and phone service. Natalie was the classic rich girl, out with the wealthy boy friend - neither are prepared for a winter storm. Jake rescues the two city slickers and takes them back to his cabin, to wait out the storm. Well neither Natalie or Chase are used to roughing it. At times, to me it was funny but other times the situation was quite serious. I really enjoyed this story. This is the first book by Annabelle Costa that I've read. I enjoyed the sparks between Jake and Natalie. I was given a copy of this book, thru the author and this is my voluntary review. I live in a rural area and this was a believable story to me. This might be my first book by Annabelle Costa but it won't be my last.

Smut: a very short inexplicit one toward the end.
POV: 1st person

This book is funny and the premise is intriguing. The way the MC uses food to describe humans is quite interesting.
However, the fact that she's very dumb, tried very hard to not be a spoiled rich girl act annoyed me so much. And I don't like her as a doormat character who always lets her boyfriend walked all over, I will break up with anyone who refuses to let me eat whatever I want, period. There were many times I want to slap her face to wake her up.
The reason I don't give a 4 star, maybe because of the lack of Jake's POV. And the ending is quite rush and I wish we could learn more about the afterwards.

Unexpected!

I’ve read a bunch for Annabelle Costa’s books and I like them - they’re different from the usual. But this one was unexpected even for her - and I really enjoyed that! The characters have their flaws, of course, but that’s what life is - working through the hard stuff. Admittedly, characters in Annabelle Costa’s books seem to struggle more than most. But reading these books makes me feel like we’re all struggling together, even if it’s at different levels.

In my opinion, this work is a great example of how Costa’s books seem to be developing greater depth and texture, and I’m really liking it!
