服不服 is a breath of fresh air in the world of Chinese novels. Countless stories label themselves featuring a “strong” female lead, or being about the “growth” of the female lead only to be able how she relies on the male lead to save her or to reveal her identity as a Mary Sue and have everything go her way.
In contrast, 楚千淼 fails at things multiple times. She has to learn how the 职场 works, sometime the hard way, and how to stop being just blindly nice to everyone she meets. Yes, she is smart, but she is not all-knowing. She is just very, very hard-working.
Similarly, 任炎is portrayed as a person, with his own strengths and weaknesses. He is not just some stereotype whose only function is to save the female lead and send out subliminal misogynistic messages (looking at you, 杉杉來吃). He is not perfect, but there’s a reason for his imperfection, and he works to overcome them when he realizes that this is a problem.
And both characters from the beginning to the end act logically.
So many stories are ruined by the characters doing something completely irrational so that there can be a 分手, then a 复合, and then a happy ending (or a 再分手 and 再复合 if the author wants to drag it out). It is so, so gratifying to finally read a book where both characters are just doing everything they can achieve the goals they want to achieve.
Overall, I really liked this book. I would definitely recommend you read this book, especially if you want a story with genuine character development, and if you’re interested in a story about finance/investment banking.
