Will is the hot shot pilot and second in command on the Arillia, a pretty little cargo ship making runs just this side of legal. When they lose their engineer, Will goes on the hunt in spacedock for a new one. What he finds is Tab, a gruff, scarred man who can get the job done. For Tab, the Arillia is a job, a good one at that, and if the pilot makes him growl and want more than he should, well it sure beats starving. The sparks fly between them and they begin to care, whether they want to or not. If they can survive their pasts, space pirates and nearly being blasted out of space, they just might be able to survive each other.
Drew Zachary is the pen-name of co-authors Chris Owen and Vic Winter.
"Born in the wilds of Canada, Drew grew up with an axe in one hand and a book in the other. Drew's love of writing is outshone only by his love of men. Lucky for him, he can combine the two.
From his father, Drew learned how to wield that axe, fix a carburetor and bake a mean can of beans using fire, gas or electricity. From his mother, he learned how to rotate the tires, turn apples into just about anything from cider to pie to a meatless lasagna, and how to swim. At twelve Drew ran away to join the circus, only to run away from it when he realized just how badly elephant poop stinks.
When Drew ran out of books to read he started writing his own and never looked back. His home is filled with books, unfinished manuscripts and his grandmother's knick knacks. His best friend is a dog named Barney and his pet fish keep him entertained for hours.
Drew writes about love because he still believes in it. Even though he's never found that special man himself, he's never given up hope. Well, never on a permanent basis, anyway."
Oh um..this book surprised me. It's a Drew Zachary story, so I knew there would be a lot of sex. I also knew it would be steamy and a little kinky. No surprises there, but there was some real serious issues in this book. . It was dealt with well, I though and made Tab more likeable with how he dealt with the aftermath. The beginning is a little difficult Tab and Will are snipping, arguing, fighting and provoking each other, it got a little tiresome, but they eventually found their footing with each other and although it never turned sweet, it did become a lot more peaceful and I really liked this couple.
I just wished this had a different cover, because I really don't think or want Tab to look like that guy on the cover.
Hot-shot pilot Will is sent out by the Captain of the spaceship Arillia to find an engineer for their ship. When he meets Tab and hires him neither of them has an idea of the adventures that await them. Will is a young man who has been mistreated and sexually abused and those experiences have affected him deeply. Tab is a mature strong-willed man and while they are almost immediately attracted to each other they are like oil and water, and are continually butting heads. Their conflicts continue until Tab is able to convince Will that he is not out to hurt him.
Once they get together, they are explosively hot. While Will has not had good experiences with sex Tab is determined to show him that it's not all about pain and being used. Just as things start to get good for them and Will is starting to enjoy their encounters the ship is attacked by pirates. The Arillia and her crew lose the battle with the pirates resulting in the Captain's death, the crew members including Tab are injured and Will is taken and once again sexually assaulted. Will and Tab along with the other crew members manage to get the ship in working order again. It's much harder for Will to recover from the attack but eventually Tab is able to once again demonstrate to him that a sexual relationship is something that can be good for both of the people involved and doesn't have to be about pain and degradation.
This was a great book, it grabbed me from beginning to end. Both Will and Tab are wonderfully written characters and what I loved is that they are so different yet compliment each other beautifully. The pain and suffering that Will has gone through in the past and then once again when they are attacked is dealt with in a very realistic way, there is no quick overnight cure rather Will and Tab both have to work hard to overcome their problems. It's not always easy, and they do have many arguments and fights, but in the end manage to find a way to get through and find their own happy ending.
Just enough plot to connect the sex scenes, enough characterization so I know the characters, and of course Zachary's trademark sizzling sex. I have a big soft spot for Zachary stories, though not all will work for me, and I definitely enjoyed Frighter Flights. I've already bought the sequel and will read it soon.
Will is the pilot of Arillia and she is his baby, and she needs a good doctor, someone who is willing to join them. He finds Tab, a big man with great skills in his hands both for a mechanical engine than a human body. And now the only body he wants to play with his Will's.
Will and Tab have strong will and no one of them wants to leave the command, but, this time Tab will understand that say the "no" word could win him the way to Will's body and trough that to his heart.
Will has a past of no good experiences with sex, he sees it only like a way to relief stress. Tab instead sees sex like an enjoyable exercise, to do when he is free and wants to play. Together they will learn that having sex with someone you care could be a wonderful experience.
I really like Tab's characters, he is, at the same time, strong and gentle, he knows when to push and when to pull (pun not intended)
Story was okay and everything started out great. Looked like the typical sci-fi romance I enjoy so I don't quite know how it went downhill but it did for me when Will, the sexy pilot, turned into a girly character. Tab, the engineer Will hired on, was alright but even he lost his attractiveness because I couldn't get past his attraction for Will which was superficial, to say the least.
The MM romances that I like always have that emotional intensity as well as tension between the protagonists. In Freighter Flights, the tension was missing and the two guys were just squabbling like adolescents, one of them a girl.
I'm going to read James Buchanan's Twice the Cowboy, Twice the Ride and see how it compares. Never read him before but I do have a few of his titles on my TBR list.
Drew Zachary has a knack for creating amazing characters who in their struggles to survive are able to find goodness in others. Though Tab and Will both have emotional issues to work through, they need each other to find the love and be whole again. The sex is graphic and definitely male / male, and there are a couple of very rough scenes, but these all add to the depth of these men and give us an understanding of where these two are emotionally. If you enjoy gay erotica, you'll enjoy this one.
OGM! This was smokin' hot! I loved the fighting between Tam, our engineer and Will, our flyboy. The stubborn pride, every little thing setting their teeth on edge. I enjoyed watching them fumble towards a relationship, figuring things out the hard way sometimes. Add in getting chased by pirates and getting drunk at port...made me a happy girl. I am soooo looking forward to reading book two.
Hot, incredibly witty and a fantastic story - everything you could ask for from a book, and even better a sequel to read next!! All I've come to expect from Drew Zachary, this story was just brilliant.
I just love Zachary Drew's characters. Period! I have a soft spot for age-gap and I loved how protective Tab was. And Will's also a tough guy if maybe a little cranky sometimes xD And sex is smokin' as always!
So I love a good enemies to lovers story and Drew Zachary definitely gives us two men who are at odds with each other right from the start. Neither really means to, but somehow they are constantly setting each other off. There is a grudging respect for the other’s skills, but their tempers just flare when they are together. So I enjoyed seeing these guys progress over the course of the book, to soften and stop taking such easy offense, and to slowly come to really care about each other.
The problem here is that this story is pretty much two modes: fight and fuck. The first part of the book is mostly the two of them fighting as they get to know each other and work together. Most of the time I wasn’t even clear on what these guys were mad about or why. We don’t get enough understanding of their characters to see why their hackles rise so easily. So we mostly have a lot of temper flares, storming around, and angry sex. Then there is a traumatic event that happens and that brings these guys closer emotionally. After that, it is pretty much all sex all the time. Now you know I am not a girl who usually complains about too much sex in my books. But virtually nothing else happens for the entire rest of the book other than these guys having sex over and over. And over. For pages. One scene ends and another starts with no plot in between. I think Zachary can write hot sex and I have enjoyed previous stories by this author, but I just needed more to hold this story together.
I find books need either a strong plot or strong character development (or both) to really carry them along. In this case, we have only the barest framework of plot. The two guys meet, they fight, something happens that shakes them up emotionally, and then they begin having sex and more of an emotional attachment. And that is it. But we also don’t get much in the way of character development either. I never really felt that I understood Will. We know he has been used and carelessly treated by men in his past, but we don’t learn any specifics, nor do we learn much about why he was so willing to accept guys who treat him like crap. It is just the vaguest back story with no development. Beyond that, we learn virtually nothing about their backgrounds or really about them at all other than both men are stubborn, a bit arrogant, and tough. Tab clearly has a tender side, and I did enjoy seeing how much he cares for Will in the aftermath of the attack. And I did like these guys together and find them entertaining and kind of sweet together. I just don’t feel like I walked away really knowing much about them.
I've had this for a while but haven't felt up to reading it. I didn't like On Fire and have stayed clear of Drew Zachary ever since but I needed a spaceman for my whips and kisses challenge and since I already had this I thought what a heck, gotta read it sometime. I really liked it! I loved both Will and Tab and how they acted. I loved how Tab cared for Will and wanted to treat him right. And this is not good, I have soo much to read but now I've got to check out what else Zachary has written.
I enjoyed this pure sci-fi novel. Tab and Will are one of the most awkward couples that I have read about. They aren't in touch with their feelings at all, if they can possibly avoid it. They are touchy, prickly and bad tempered. They can't have a conversation without arguing. And the l-word should only apply to a good brew or top-of-the-range meal. Despite all that they do manage to build a relationship that fits them well.
One cranky mechanic plus one equaly cranky pilot makes a romance full of fun. I loved all the headbutting they indulged in. Overall it was a funny and sweet love story. It didn't dwell on angsty bits, all bad things that happened were mostly left to imagination.
Fun and sexy space romp featuring an oil-and-water pairing. The MCs’ reluctance to trust each other became a bit exasperating, but the “fight, fight, fuck” progress of their friendship was readably entertaining.
